Car Situation Getting Bad

We've been getting a lot of e-mails about the lack of regular vehicles and pool vehicles due to cold weather breakdowns. Not only are cars being doubled up, they're being tripled up or riding four deep. VRI can't even field enough cars most nights for the amount of bodies that are showing up for work.

This vehicle went out in 007 recently:

Now we know that it's winter, that cars aren't exactly clean. But the recently discovered design flaw in the new Explorers (heater burns out) and the continuing problems with other platforms, this is what we're reduced to driving.

How about the dumb ass that decided to buy the tahoes. Fucking terrible in the snow! Very dangerous to drive and very slow moving and constantly slipping sliding and getting stuck all winter. They have everything bad in them and none of the good things. Mainly 4 wheel drive. Stupid!

"Car Situation Getting Bad"

A trip down memory lane...

Remember when HQ was at 11th & State and how some of the bosses would blow a gasket and threaten to write Coppers up for driving dirty raggedy-assed, rattle-trap, rusted out squads?

"Failure To Properly Maintain Department Property" or some bullshit...

"Can you explain to me why you failed to take this car for a wash Officer?"

Cuz the dirt and rust are what's holding this raggedy, leaks like a seive muthafuckah together... Sir...

Or remember the silliness of Coppers hitting a bump then having to chase the rolling hubcap that popped off because the Inspectors had a hair across their asses about missing hubcaps?

...Design flaw but that didn't stop silly men with gold stars from using that to aggravate Patrolmen trying to survive the silly shit on the streets.

Fun was swiping THEIR hubcaps whenever we could! Special cases got a loosened lug nut and a super-glued hub cap...

More fun was watching them drive a block, pull over and look at the offending wheel(s).

"WTF? o_O?"

It's not going to change until bosses start getting hurt/majorly inconvenienced.

Running CPD on the cheap like this is going to be one of Rahm's CPD "efficiencies" he's going to crow like a bantam rooster about when he runs for national office.

Speaking of such?

Whatever happened regarding the crash that resulted in the death of Sgt. Haymaker? (R.I.P)

Lots of chit-chat about that car being a "993" that was hit/badly damaged in a prior accident but pressed into service to save money.

As one of the supervisors attempting to maintain the fleet on the district level. You would be surprised at how many of the problems with the vehicles are caused by misuse or neglect. Cars being used as garbage cans, being driven over things or into things that they shouldn't be. That being said fleet sucks also. Worst thing was when we went to the 9 hour day and you were given a different car each day. It seems they were taken Carr of better when you were in the same car everyday.

Main issue in explorers are passenger seat is cramped as shit. I'm 6'0 and it is not too comfortable sitting in the front passenger. The next issue is there is absolutely no drainage. Pools of melted snow form a mini squad car pond.

We should not be subjected to these poor working conditions. Could you imagine if someone from corporate Ametican came in to their office and there was no heat and the computer wasent working?

Fop canidate Kilmer had an interesting story at my roll call about the car he was driving in catching on fire being downed 2 days before for trans fumes. Mentioned fop safety committee at Fop being nonexistent. Who is in charge of that anyways? He wouldn't say.

No car has drainage holes on the interior floor, nless you are accustomed to driving one of those Ducks from Wisconsin Dells, of course. I generally use one of the cups of coffee left from the previous watch to literally bail out the pool of water on the floor.

But the poster who stated the problem has been exacerbated since the onset of the 4-2 schedule and no assigned vehicle is DEAD-ON correct: No one feels any sense of consistency or ownership over the vehicles, since he is unlikely to ride in it again the next day. Consequently, few people wash it, check the oil/washer fluid, call the R-man, take it for maintenance, etc. Though it is obvious the fleet is being kept in service WAAAAY longer than it was years ago, we are simply our own worst enemies.

It's only going to get worst if this weather continues. Remember with FLEET MANAGEMENT the priority is NOT police vehicles. The priority is SNOW REMOVAL and their support vehicles. When the police department was in control of their own rolling stock the priority was the police and only the police. Not so with FLEET MANAGEMENT. Big mistake was made when the police fleet was turned over to FLEET MANAGEMENT, big mistake!

This is where the Times and Tribune become valuable. Keep a few on the floor and throw them away and replace they as they get soaked through. I grab a cheap rubber floor mat and keep the newspapers under the mat. They absorb water, they get replaced, floor doesn't turn into lake michigan. Reader also works, as does Red Eye etc.

Shame on any of you fucks for driving something like this. You don't have to. Down these pieces of shit and keep downing them until they are fixed properly. Guess what? Eventually we will get cars that work. And please don't insult me with there aren't any pool cars. I'll gladly sit and read a book and get paid if they won't give me the proper equipment to do my job. Don't continue to be a part of the problem. Be a part of the solution.

Everyday I get a car I play "what's wrong with this one" and "how will this car likely kill me tonight?" I can't remember the last time I took out a car with less than 100K miles or at least one I felt safe taking over 40 MPH. I crashed one not long ago with well over 110K miles because the suspension was gone, tires were bald and steering wheel was mostly just to hold on while we crashed.

Tell your family member that GOD FORBID you are involved in a serious accident to call an lawyer ASAP and get their hands on the car you were driving. Most of the fleet are not fit for a pizza driver let alone 24/7 emergency vehicle operation. Call the R man and get all that crap on record. It may seem petty and most likely won't get fixed, but CYA!

Please BE SAFE and don't take risks that the city won't back you up on anyway. Unless it's an officer calling for help, it's just not worth it.

This car situation is a result of not purchasing vehicles once a year. The Tahoes have lived out their life expectancy we have vehicles pushing 200,000 miles and those are hard city miles. They have should have been placed in the pool fleet a long time ago. I like the smoke and mirrors pony show with the small allotment purchase of Explorers. Fleet doesn't out fit the vehicles installing equipment. It is out sourced by a company that I'm sure has some political clout. What I have been told is that they are shorting out the computers in the Explorers causing the climate control system to malfunction. Can this City do anything right the first time.

We're told at staff meeting othe r day that 2014 is gonna be real bad regarding work conditions, lack of vehicles, lack of manpower and restricted time due. We're told that these conditions were well above and beyond the commanders level to get the appropriate resources. So we were told we have to suck it up, no cars for the relieving watches, call in the beat cars to give up cars, no new PDTs, basically operating without the minimum, do the best with the least basically. So this is what we got, the Detroit-A-zation do the CPD well under way. Thanks Rahm.......

The pool cars are being used/reassigned as VRI and Operation Impact regular cars. The new ford Taurus' are downed because the seat belt connector breaks from you gun belt/holster. (It's cheap plastic, not metal).
And good luck getting a pdt.

It's great to hear cars go into the district because they need to finish their report. The amount of wasted time increases everyday.

But there is good news. If you are a gold star, you will always have a new car and it will get no more than 10,000 miles on it before you get a new one.

i have been in 007 awhile and this is typical especially in the snow. there are coppers who leave all their newspapers and garbage all over and then there are officers who leave their chicken bones in the cup holders. there should be accountability. if the bosses care so much about saving money then come down on the lazy slob officers who treat it like their garbage can. suggestion: all sgts are required to inspect all vehicles at the end of the shift. if squad is not clean the sgt will order slob officer to clean it or spar them. it is quite simple. as for the safety of some of these squad cars, there is a bunch of them that have exposed wires. sometimes forcing us to maneuver our legs uncomfortably just to avoid getting caught in exposed wires.

Ok so in this picture some cop put cardboard in the floor board to absorb snow. That is a terrible idea and looks worse as it gets wet. Totally irrelevant.
As for the exposed wires, that is bad and looks like shit.
However most of the bad car situation are the cop's own fault. How many guys/girls do absolutely nothing to take care of a car??? The god damn food, drinks, cigarettes, and other bullshit brought into and left in cars is disgusting. Nothing worse then finding some dog ass's chicken bone dinner under the damn seat. Can someone explain how a steering wheel is picked apart??? Mechanical issues are one thing and that is on the city, however the general day to day slob bullshit is on the P.O.'s that drive them.
If you are missing a PDT that sucks too, however it sucks worse when some asshole is hording it in their locker. Another fun experience is going to change a tire and not having any of the equipment and or a flat spare.

Stop being buddy fuckers.

For the only two people on the Department that believe McCarthy is a good supt., a leader or even an effective manager does not just give out edicts and expect them to be followed without providing support for the troops that to carry out the edicts. One of the leader's most critical responsibilities is to provide the troops with the tools to carry out those edicts.

On this, McCarthy has failed miserably. He either doesn't care or he is grossly incompetent. He has been informed numerous times about the critical lack of vehicles and the condition of existing vehicles, yet he ignores the information and does nothing about it. He doesn't even respond by acknowledging what the troops are contending with. To say that he has any leadership skills whatsoever is clearly laughable.

Design flaw in all Ford Explorers was told to me by R Man yesterday....apparently, the Fords all have some sort of electronic "brain box" module (as he called it---I'm not good with that stuff) that is located at the lowest point of the floorboard underneath the driver's feet. The water that collects on the plastic from snow melting from your shoes permeated through the plastic or gets in through the edges near the door jam, and cannot evaporate once underneath. Eventually, enough water collects to short out this module, and a lot of the electronic equpt in the car, including the blower motor for the heat (which we kinda need in this weather). Fleet is pressing Ford for a fix, as Area South has 23 Fords down for electrical issued caused by this.

Of course it would cost $109.95 (retail from the manufacturer) per Explorer, so the city isn't interested, but how about those WeatherTech floor mats that actually go UP the floorpan about 2 inches or so. Those you could empty out at least a couple times during your tour.

But more cost effective to have the inspector gig you for a super salty pants leg....

This problem really started blowing up when the Tahoes started stacking up for electrical problems...

Reason?

The 3rd party monkeys jerry-rigging all the silly and unnecesaary "cpd spec" shit.

Ford designed these vehicles with an up & down integrated electrical suite to run with THEIR plug-in add-ons... Not for some 3rd party monkeys dicking around under the dashboard/in the firewall for the first hot wire to split & splice.

Every L.E. demo we saw with the Explorers and Tauruses, Ford was running THEIR stuff designed from the ground up to be compatable.

Chicago is running a bunch of fly-by-night, second rate, home made bullshit from defunct companies that imploded because the City refused to pay them in a timely manner

Rumors of ongoing warranty beefs/issues and Ford is telling P.D. Fleet managers "If you fuck with the electric in spite of us telling you not to then Y.O.Y.O."

Is Ford still standing firm on that?

That might be another reason why Explorers are stacking up at the Areas...

Anyone from Fleet want to chime in?

P.S.
How the entire fuck DOES one pick the steering wheel in a Police car down to the fucking rim??

Must be the same m/fer who uses the pdt keyboard as as a serving tray for boogers...

i have been in 007 awhile and this is typical especially in the snow. there are coppers who leave all their newspapers and garbage all over and then there are officers who leave their chicken bones in the cup holders. there should be accountability. if the bosses care so much about saving money then come down on the lazy slob officers who treat it like their garbage can. suggestion: all sgts are required to inspect all vehicles at the end of the shift. if squad is not clean the sgt will order slob officer to clean it or spar them. it is quite simple. as for the safety of some of these squad cars, there is a bunch of them that have exposed wires. sometimes forcing us to maneuver our legs uncomfortably just to avoid getting caught in exposed wires.

--------------------------------------------------------

How is it the sgts job to ensure you have a clean car. Man up and drop paper on the slobs before you. Better yet why not go ask the secretary who had the car before you, find them and bitch them out. Sgts aren't there to hol you hand and did were thing for you. Sac the f up and take action and responsibility.

Stop bitching and buy some rubber mats from Costco for $15. Or would you rather sit in wet moldy filth while your pants soak up that sewage?

Why are squads this filthy? filthy inconsiderate assholes who have zero pride. The same ones that make fun of the filthy ghetto homes we sometimes find.

who said the officer was bitching? im sure you enjoy getting into a car that not only smells like ass but is chock full of garbage up to your elbows and has exposed wires sitting in or near a puddle of water. how is it that officers fault what his/her "co-workers" do with the explorers. keep on trolling the blog you miserable crusty fuck

The explorer issue is not a result of add on equipment. It's a design flaw. Being slobs only makes it worse. Floors are wet screwing up wiring. This is why the mechanics warmed the fleetards to never buy the first year of anything. But what do we know

Years ago, we used to but from 300 to 500 cars, not I believe we are getting about 100 or so a year.

I agree with the above post.spend a few bucks and buy some mats for the squad! Also I'm sick of being the only one taking the car to the wash.I love seeing officers own cars so clean you could eat off them but leave the squads like s**t!I agree, find the slobs who last used the squad and tear them a new one!

When you were assigned to a regular beat and used the same car it was different. Every time we rotated to days I would get a car wash and every day was the same, chicken bones under the seat, bee's wax on the window, mumbo sauce on the steering wheel and garbage on the floor. But since that was my office for the day I got it washed and cleaned every day. But then again it was the same vehicle. And another thing if it was really filthy I would find out who drove it las t and confronted them about it. You see back then we the po's would handle these things without getting the sgt. involved. Now you got one sgt. Working the street and he's doing TRR 's with one car and a iod with another car etc..... So it just gets left by the wayside to where no one gives a shot anymore.

"Of course it would cost $109.95 (retail from the manufacturer) per Explorer, so the city isn't interested, but how about those WeatherTech floor mats that actually go UP the floorpan about 2 inches or so. Those you could empty out at least a couple times during your tour."

Vanecko Bros Floor Mats gets 'em for $309.95. Problem solved for all of us, right?

Drain the floor of slush and water. You can get a shock to put you doen.
Go get the vacumm cleaner from the station and use it to suck up the water. It might ruin it, but who cares. Daley old clan (Duffy) will get paid for it Can do at least 3 cars before it shorts out.

Ever since Daley and the 40 thieves started Fleet Maint, it's been bad.
Sure we have had problems before, but at least we got decent parts so the cars would not break down from the original problems again.

During the Harold Washington administration a minority preferred contractor provided rebuilt auto electrical parts like alternators and starter motors. They were so bad that they would have to be replaced twice in a week and would tear themselves apart. The Electrical Mechanics would write the date or installed on these parts with felt-tipped markers. One mechanic said they got a look inside the factory and said there were nothing but kids working there.

Screw the It's My Friday Mentality, you all get paid good money to do a job, come into work, stay for the time and go home. Stop making coppers look like overpaid fat slobs who do nothing for their pay, I can't wait for the Swiping to begin, then the Police Dept. will see just how much money and manpower has been wasted over the years. And don't blame the younger cops for this, all you old timers have been taking early ducks for years, especially foot men and traffic cars in the districts.

Let's remember that we(police officers) are using these cars. For all of the complaining, everytime I get in a car at VRI it is filthy. Cups, water bottles, food, all left in the car. No gas in the car either. If you go in and tell someone your're a rat. If you know your fellow officer will be using the cars, clean your mess out at the end of the tour. I know they're junk but take care of what we do have.
