Design Flaw?

This is as good an explanation as anything we've seen in recent weeks:
  • ...apparently, the Fords all have some sort of electronic "brain box" module (as he called it---I'm not good with that stuff) that is located at the lowest point of the floorboard underneath the driver's feet. The water that collects on the plastic from snow melting from your shoes permeated through the plastic or gets in through the edges near the door jam, and cannot evaporate once underneath. Eventually, enough water collects to short out this module, and a lot of the electronic equpt in the car, including the blower motor for the heat (which we kinda need in this weather). Fleet is pressing Ford for a fix, as Area South has 23 Fords down for electrical issued caused by this.
As we've personally downed a couple of newer Fords for exactly this reason, it appears to that this could be exactly the case. But we aren't mechanics, so maybe not.

From my mechanic...

If you park on the street or anywhere there are a lot of trees and leaves and tree seeds collect on the air intakes by your windshield wipers clean them off.

If the leaves and seeds collect at the bottom of the intakes they can block the drain holes at the bottom.

If that happens then rain water will overflow and flood into the passenger compartment. That's when you get permanently wet floors in the car and can rust out the floorboards and any electronics down there.

Ford old adage fix or repair daily, it's still true, getting headaches my brother is a ford mechanic he told me another flaw is that carbon monoxide leaks into interior, don't believe it put a Co detector in explorer keep windows up as we do in winter turn on heater (if it works) run it for awhile see if Co detector alarm goes off!

Sounds like it would take some care and preventive maintenance to prevent this. Instead, these vehicles are being beat like a rented mule. If you are going to treat vehicles like the CPD is treating them, you need military grade, not civilian. Humvees would be more appropriate.

Solution: Order 23 new "brain boxes and install." Put the cars back on the street immediately. Request reimbursement from Ford. There is a value that can be assessed for idle cars and idle police officers per day that far outweighs the chance of not being reimbursed by Ford. If that becomes the case, new orders do not have to come form Ford. I like Fords....prefer crown vics or F450s if you like wagons. Not a big fan of cell vans, any make, for numerous reasons. Start thinking about the squad car as safety equipment. Your life and the lives of your fellow officers and citizens depend on it. So handle accordingly. I went to Costco and spent 16 bucks on rubber mats. If nothing else my feet are dryer, warmer and my pants are dry. I'm not going to bitch about how the city should provide mats etc etc. It's never going to happen. To throw a piece a cardboard on the floor and pretend that's acceptable is bull shit. Its disgusting, dangerous, and unhealthy (mold) for you and your fellow officers. I know most drive different cars so I'm putting this on the supervisors also. Collect $5 from your guys and buy mats for all the cars your people drive. Better yet, spend some of that Xmas money. Sometimes we just have to take care of some things ourselves. This seems like a no brainer.

I had the opportunity to listen to Dean Angelo and his crew at my roll call. He really didn't enlighten any of us with much of what he planned on accomplishing if he were elected. He spent a good portion of his time explaining how he was forced onto disability by the Medical Section. I will admit that I am not an expert on disability issues, but I do know a few coppers who were injured and applied for disability. You notice that I used the word applied. They had to fight their asses off in front of our pension board to be awarded disability. It would only be logical to assume Dean had to do likewise.

He was asked if he was going to be a full-time President if elected. He stated that he was. He was then asked how he would be able to work a full-time job at FOP when he was unable to work a full-time job at the Department. Guess what? No real answer. While I believe that this is a major issue, what bothers me even more are some of the claims on a palm card Dean handed out.

He claims he will reduce the President's salary from D-8 to D-6. The FOP By-laws state otherwise. Dean had the opportunity to submit a by-law proposal to accomplish this goal last year when he knew he was running for FOP President, but he chose not to. Any change he proposes to make during his term, if elected, will only affect a future President not him.

He claims he is going to save FOP members $1+Million in his first three-year term by eliminating the FOP in-house attorneys. This would mean that the current in-house FOP attorneys are earning somewhere in the neighborhood of $350 thousand between them. They both work full-time 40-hour weeks or 80-hours between them meaning they work a total of 4160 hours in a year. Their hourly salary comes out to be $84.14 which appears to be quite a bargain.

Dean intends to eliminate the attorneys, but that doesn't mean he is going to be able to eliminate the work. Somebody is going to have to do it. The elimination of in-house attorneys means farming out the work to an outside legal firm. An outside legal firm will conservatively bill somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 per hour. That number would equate to $832 thousand a year or $2.5 million over the same three-year period.

Let's see. He will spend $2.5 million to save FOP members $1+Million? Am I missing something here? No, I'm not.

Finally, he claims he will begin a permanent FOP Health Care Fund by using all of the dues money he claims he will have saved. It has already been pointed out that the savings just don't exist. Even if they did, I wonder why anyone would want to take the burden of health care off of the City and place it onto FOP members via their dues. The FOP has been successfully fighting the City over the health care issue and hasn't seen a rate increase for years. It appears Dean is giving up the fight even before he is elected. This isn't a trait I want to see in any candidate who is asking for my vote.

Why can't American car companies make a vehicle that is not full of flaws? Ford recalled all the new escape models for fuel leakage problems, who are the engineers? They need to be held accountable, rahm touted how ford was made in Chicago from the Torrence ave plant, now look at this expensive junk! To make matters worse many of the so called techs in our garages are hacks that really don't know what to do, that is why whenever a vehicle is "repaired" by them it comes back half assed with things broken, like trim items, amnd always grease all over interior and on body! Majority of times if dealer services car it is done properly, and car is not destroyed when it comes back.

Whatever happened to personal pride also, inspections on Sundays, not leaving food and garbage in cars, not driving vehicles like you stole it and just driving over everything, slamming into potholes etc? Boys and girls what about taking cars to car wash? Filling with fuel? Checking oil and washer solvent? Making sure air is in tires? Is this how you live? I work in 008 and make sure my vehicle is taken card of, even if it's not same car, I take it to car wash also, beside making it look good personal pride I can stop get a cup of coffee, a personal.

Many younger coppers bitch more than ever, about this job, if you don't like it here and want things like residency eliminated no problem easy just lateral to that suburb you talk about so much. On CPD you don't like the district, bosses, coppers no problem you can bid somewhere else same job different faces, but in the burbs that's it your stuck on that dept like the people or not!

This is a common problem on various cars manufactured by the Ford company, including the now discontinued medium line of cars from Mercury. The lighting control module was assembled by Motorola and they went cheap with electrical resistors on the circuit board. The lighting control module routinely conks out after about 90,000 miles. I mention this because so many of the "Police Interceptors" in use in Chicago are modified Mercurys.

I never understood why the cars were not recalled due to this common defect, but the lighting control module is a core component, so there is a whole after market for rebuilt parts that replaced the cheap resistors with better ones. It is a pain in the neck to remove because the part is alongside the steering column and right above the accelerator pedal. If you can find the replacement module online, the fix is about $125.00, provided you return the damaged module (which will be rebuilt and sold again) and you have a socket set and a screwdriver. Take it to a Ford dealer and the cost is going to be over $1,000.00.

The module is wedged in tightly and removing it and disconnecting the wiring plugs will be a headache. A neighbor saw me twisting and turning with my legs outside of the car door while my head was under the dashboard and assumed that I had fallen and had a heart attack!

The module does act as brain for the electrical system and the car will not run once it is removed, so it has to be replaced. Most people learn that it is out of order when the headlights begin to work intermittently.

In all my years I've owned one Ford, a new 1970 Torino -- and that was enough!

The std warranty back then was 12 months / 12,000 miles. And at about 11 months, 12,300+ miles my 'new car' stared falling apart -- literally!

First the gas pedal broke from the floor, I had to use the metal rod the pedal pressed to accelerate. Then shortly after that, one Saturday afternoon my cousin and I were sitting in my 'new Ford' listening to the radio and he went to raise the volume for a song and -- the knob broke off in his hand -- that was fucking hilarious -- he was laughing so hard he went to roll the window down, to get air, or spit. You got it!..the fucking crank handle came off in his goddamn hand!!

Was that all, you may wonder....hell no. Not with that piece of shit. The next thing that broke was the hinge for the back of the front seat -- ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. I had to drive with the back at an angle of about 30 degrees, not exactly cool in 1971. But as they say, the worst was yet to come.

When it rained or was damp outside, I had to start the car with a Propane Torch! I had to heat/dry out the plug wires or the car wouldn't start!! Ford used carbon core plug wires not copper wire, and cheap low grade rubber that would easily crack. The carbon core would get damp and the car wouldn't start. So until I got rid of that pos in '73 for a new Toyota Celica ST I had to carry a propane torch with me. Not that it was DANGEROUS or anything taking a fucking torch to the top of a V-8, like where the carburetor & gasoline was, being close to the distributor. Great design Ford Motor Co!

That was my one and only Ford. I still can't even walk onto a Ford dealer car lot. Not even for another brand of car. Screw them. I don't even like riding in them.

Why not demand heavy duty front seat material, which they do make for big trucks, but the politics involved overtake common sense. why don't our unions demand and put together a safety team, I know we have research and development but these goofs have no common sense. We need to get pro active and now with the new generation BIG MOUTH kids coming on this job, they need to use this to their advantage. but then gain they are ball less punks who don't take care of anything, just look at their own cars or apartments, the college mentality rules. Q: What goes on pages 4-5 of the Ford's user's manual? A: The train & bus schedule.

Q: Why do the new FORD Explorers have larger bumpers? A: To make it easier on the tow trucks.

Q: Why are FORD dealers giving away a dog with each FORD sold? A: So the owner has a companion to walk home with.

Q: What is the aim of a Ford project car? A: An attempt to keep their car running.

Why do people name their kids Mercedes, Lexus, Porsche when they look like buicks & Fords.

Henry Ford Goes to Heaven Henry Ford dies and goes to Heaven. At the gate, St Peter tells Henry Ford: "Well, you've been such a good guy, invented the car, changed the world. As a reward you can hang out with anybody in Heaven of your choice." So Henry Ford thinks about it and says: "I would like to hang out with God himself?" So St Peter takes him directly to God's thrown and Henry Ford starts by saying: "God, I don't want to sound biased, but you have some major design flaws in Your invention, the Woman. 1. There's too much front end protrusion 2. It chatters at high speeds 3. The rear end wobbles too much 4. The intake is too close to the exhaust." "HMMMM" says God and goes over to the Celestial Super Computer, types in a few key strokes, and waits for the results. He then turns to Henry Ford and says; "It may be that My invention is flawed, but according to the stellar computer more men are riding My invention then your's".

To the officer from 012, you must be a new guy. You see back in the day most squad cars got taken out of service at around 85-90,000 miles on them. So when a new car came into the district the field lt. Got it then handed down that squad to be used by the sgt.s and they would rotate their cars down to the PO' s to use. So basically new and newer cars were getting rotated in for use. But now it ain't so since they took motor maintenance away from the dept and made it fleet mgmt.

Drill holes in the floor? How much does the stealership squeal with joy when you show up to have your wiper blades changed? Drill the holes, now enters moisture, dirt, salt, etc. Salt+rust+holes in floors= bigger holes in floors and eventually no floors.

Take care of your toys, children. Preventive maintenance, and regular maintenance can only do so much.

I almost did that. Bought the Deluxe mats for my own car but took the old but perfectly serviceable mats from my car and put them in my squad car. I hate this stupid car rotation business as it seems like I am the only one who ever checks the oil and windshield wiper fluid.

I even put a shot of the special deep freeze -35 degrees wiper fluid in the mix. But had to be careful as the mechanics one time thought someone had put radiator coolant in there and put the car down to drain the system.

Another good thing to throw in the trunk is a square scrape carpet. If you have to change a tire it's something to kneel on rather than cold wet concrete.

A quick spray of white lithium grease on the hinges and some WD40 in the locks when I did that for my car kept things running smoothly.

Stay Safe. But back then I considered both cars as mine.

That was my one and only Ford. I still can't even walk onto a Ford dealer car lot. Not even for another brand of car. Screw them. I don't even like riding in them.

Similar story here. My one Ford product was an 83 Mercury Grand Marquis. Lemme see...Brakes went out. Timing chain broke. Electrical system went out. I swore I'd never fuck with another Ford product in life. 25 years later, I still haven't. And I won't ever.

As p/o's in 012 we don't have to worry about this issue because the sergeants took all the new cars for themselves.

1/31/2014 01:00:00 AM

That's because the monkeys you work with cut the steering wheels, use the dashboard as a pin cushion, throw your food in the glove box and in general treat your cars like garbage.

The cars filter through the ranks to draw out the shelf life. Tell your co-workers to grow up and treat taxpayers property as their own, kid.

Not the original poster, obviously your experience with rank is confined to this job. In the military a leader doesn't feel entitled to anything because of their rank. In the military you always look out for those that you lead before you look out for your own comfort. Unfortunately on this job we have a lot of supervisors and not enough leaders.

None of you guys have a clue as to the issue with these vehicles. We have been fixing these explorers, and to set the record straight any RMAN that thinks he knows what he is talking about and says the BRAIN BOX is shorting out is a idiot. There's a reason why he is a r man. The true issue speaking from a past dealer certified technician is that ford uses the same interior wiring hardness on all there explorers. So there are two what in dealer language is called a buss connectors under the front seats. So on civilian explorers those suv have more modules in the vehicle so those connectors are used. In case of the police interceptor suvs the connectors Are just taped up. Now in the tahoes and crown vic the weather mat inside the vehicle is all one piece So What Stays On Top And Doesn't Really Get Under Carpet mat. for what ever reason why ford would use a two piece weather carpet is stupid in my opinion cause you allow salty water to fill the floor board . remember that unused connector well they corrod and turn green, Causing loss of communication with several various modules. Funny thing is when key fob stops to work and tire light is flashing its first sign that water is corroding that connetor but vehicles won't get downed for that. Salt water does a number on the buss communication connector. So I guess it a perfect case of bad design and total carelessness.brain box!!! Lmfao!!! There are no brain boxs shorting out!!!! Fix the connector, clean and dry interior and relocate connectors and we'll see it back next winter with cardboard inside again.........

In district I work those mats would take a walk out of the car.

talked to a friend who is a Ford engineer, and he told me the big problem with CPD explorers is that the police versions have everything done per Ford spec, the vehicle can be sold to CPD with all equipment installed basically plug and play with Ford spec! But the city uses equipment that is so old and not compatible that this happens, the suburban departments that buy this same vehicle have few if any problems.

Our so called techs are majority parts changers who really have no clue how to properly repair a vehicle. How many times have you taken vehicle in for simple oil change, get it back grease on fenders, worse that when it was brought in,and sometimes smoke pouring from the engine area from oil being spilled on hot engine? How about getting anything repaired you get back in vehicle and wires are dangling, electrical tape everywhere? How about changing a flat but you cannot loosen the nuts as the garage guy never used required torque wrench to tighten them but just turned air impact gun full speed and tightened wheel, and besides that the brakes start to vibrate and car shakes because wheels are to tight and brake rotors warp?

You are so right second poster. The idiots that think they are entitled because of rank, or because, the classic moron chicago way worker... "that's the way we USED to do it..." are the same type of IDIOTS that are elected and run this crap hole city. People that think that way are just mindless minions. Good leaders lead. The others who want and are proud of their ghetto entitlements are just plain supervisors.

"...some WD40 in the locks..."

1/31/2014 11:27:00 AM

A squeeze bottle of graphite powder is the classic lock lube. Give it a shot in the keyhole, work the key around, lock/unlock repeatedly, then wipe the key off and wash your hands. (grin)

Graphite is dry, won't freeze up. Oils like WD-40 tend to collect dirt and eventually make things worse.

...but can't fault a guy for trying! Stay safe.

LOL right. My "leaders" have had the rank and the pay but needed me to do the "leading". Ever seen troops not issued cold weather gear but sent to cold weather climates...and then brass blames the squad leaders who supply ignored as they begged for the gear for their troops? Those are my recent memories. If I was a real leader I woulda went in my pocket and spent hundreds of dollars buying their gear myself.

You're the no brainer. Just what the city wants spend YOUR MONEY to solve THIER problem. Let it rust out. Let it sit at the area. Find a new piece of cardboard everyday.
Whatever. You got a spare $600 ? because our desk printer craps out about 2x a week and we just keep getting the same 'refurbished' ones from Unisys. Hey, its only ~$2 each officer assigned to my district. Bring your xmas money on over....

You're obviously a new boot on the job who hasilitary expirience of some sort and wants to be a big boy and post on the blog. Your stupid rediculous comment tells me how lost and new you really are. Not only to the job but life. If you're really that young and naive to believe the military has "real" leaders you're a goof. Your comment pretty much sums up all the new recruits on the job now. Arrogant mindless entitled children who really believe they deserve it. Now stay off the blog and go back to your foot post asshole.

Ford Explorer P.I.'s are leaking at the Spot Light column. Look at the pillar above the spotlight. Ours are loose direct from manufacturer due to spot light being overtightened. All the water is sitting in the insulation on drivers side and I bet if you have passenger side spot lights same problem is occurring. Step up Ford and fix the problem . 2013 and newer all leak.
