"6:28PM - Officer makes a street stop, determines that the man should be taken into custody. He requests a "wagon."
6:40PM - Dispatcher asks for a regular patrol car that has a protective cage around the back seat to go pick up the arrestee. Officer on scene says, no, the arrestee is VERY large and he must have a normal, old-school paddy wagon.
6:42PM - Dispatcher says one of the 19th district "wagons" today is actually just a Chevy Tahoe patrol car. The other one will come.
6:43 - Wait. The other one is a van, not a squadrol. Will the guy fit in a van?
6:45PM - Officer repeats, "We can’t transport him in a Tahoe" or a van. "If [the 19th district doesn't have a] squadrol, get one from another district."
6:48PM - The 18th district will send one of their squadrols.
7:09PM - The 18th district shows up. It's a van, not a squadrol.
7:10PM - Dispatchers have checked with all North Side districts. None has a squadrol.
7:14PM - Dispatcher is getting permission from her supervisor to ask a South Side district to provide a squadrol.
7:14PM - A sergeant arrives at Irving Park. Says to hold off on the South Side request while he analyzes the situation.
[Analysis ensues.]
7:15PM - Sergeant tells the dispatcher to send an ambulance because, while the arrestee is not injured, he will at least fit inside of an ambulance.
7:49PM - Ambulance takes the arrestee away."

When I came on we had THREE full sized squadrols in each district, some had more, I believe 018 had 4 or 5. In my district we had a 71, 72 and 73. But of course we hauled the living and the dead and had other misc duties as would come up from time to time.
My personal best was 19 arrestees in the wagon at one time. All teenaged gangbangers, little punks, 5'6" 140 pound bastards. They wanted them taken in and were trying to call for more wagons, I said fuck it, these little jagoffs would fit and they did. 19 of them. Tact guys got a kick out of that as they piled out. Better than stuffing a load of college kids in a Volkswagon.

Sure. All night it was "Taking one to the detox, taking one to the Read," etc. Now you use big expensive rolling intensive care units for this kind of dirty work, while someone has a heart attack and has to wait for an ambulance.

Looking at a pic of a wagon in 1950. Equipment laid out along side -- first aid kit, extinguisher, fire ax, lantern, 2 Halligans, rope, body bag, 10-pound sledge, stretcher, blanket. Maybe someone borrowed the bolt cutters, and there had to be a shotgun and a couple boxes of shells around somewhere. Basic stuff to help out, to at least get a start on everyday situations and maybe even resolve some.
We don't need wagons!!!!! McCarthy doesn't want arrests. He wants ANOVs and contact cards. You don't need wagons for that.
When I worked in 007 (1977,78,79) We had five. One for each sector. And if they were not all manned we were told we could not get time due, manpower shortage. Some things never change.
We backed each other up though and even though we could only carry 56 hours on the books and were told we had to work on election day for 16 hours with no additional pay( no additional PAY for any reason then or time due) because we were told, "it was our civic duty". These and many more reasons are why we have a Union today.
