Well Lookie Here

  • Part of a shipment of semiautomatic assault rifles was stolen this week from a freight train container at a rail yard in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, federal authorities and a railroad spokesman said.

    The 13 Smith and Wesson M and P15 Sport rifles were stolen from a yard located in the 6100 block of South Lafayette Avenue sometime between Sunday and Tuesday, a spokesman with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said.

    "We're hoping to recover them before they're … used in any type of crime," said Special Agent Thomas Ahern, spokesman for the ATF's Chicago field office.
We imagining that somehow, this is the fault of Concealed Carry owners and Chicago ought to ban "assault" weapons because guns are evil and people (and folks) shouldn't have guns. Because it couldn't possibly be the fault of the jagoffs who broke into a parked boxcar in Englewood.

We certainly hope that the ATFE people are looking into the possibility of an inside job. Even 10 G's wouldn't bet on the odds of a parked train in with a bunch of guns on board just happening to get hit while parked in Englewood.

True as always SCC, looks like another inside job, wonder if this is another of the "fast n furious" recreations that was created by Eric holder?

Guns? Who cares?

The real problem is "semi-automatic" knives with "extended" "assault" blades:

Heard about this on WGN-TV you think they hit an armory and drove off with 13 Tanks.

They made a huge deal they were shipped with 30-round clips and used a NATO round bullets. Geez, did the reporter ever shoot a gun in his life??

Big deal, they ran off with some standard, semi-automatic sporting rifles. Let's all shake in our boots.

And then they paraded all the South Side "git rid of guns" crowd who have yet to have any influence in their neighborhood.

"We need to keep these types of guns off the street".

Yeah - we need to keep them in our homes to protect us from all this crime.

Talk about over-blowing a story. WGN gets the "Chicken Little Award" for broadcasting with a "sky-is-falling, everybody-panic" mentality.

I dunno, depending on the line I'd consider that bet! I thought the same thing at first, that it's gotta be an inside job.

But there were more than 13 in there. If it were truly an inside job they would have known how many would be in there, and brought a vehicle big enough to transport more than a small fraction of them.

I want to chalk this up to hitting the 'hood lottery. We all know they roll the dice and hit those boxcars all the time. Sometimes the whole 'hood gets the same new shoes at the same time, sometimes they all have the same winter jackets, sometimes they all get the same TV's.

I think a blind squirrel found his proverbial nut.
I don't get why they let any trains sit on that part of track for an extended period of time.

Article says the weapons were "stolen this week."

Basic journalism 101 says you report the when. Most articles are more specific than just "this week xyz happened."

Why did the ATF wait so long to release a press release on this one?

Or, why did the media wait so long to report this to the public?

Just curious. . .

What a coincidence that out of all the freight cars on the railroad tracks and these mind reading robbers happen to find the one carrying them rifles. Pretty mind boggling I say. What baffles me is that it occurred in the worst crime area in the city as the freight train suddenly came to rest there giving these criminals enough time to steal the only freight car that really matters to the criminals. Amazing, or is someone in the freight distribution business tipping off the criminals...

I love the last few paragraph in the story. 97% of of the firearms used in crimes are handguns so Da Rahmfather wants to ban Modern Sporting Rifles - AKA "assault weapons"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
City leaders have often denounced the presence of such weapons in Chicago, pointing to incidents such as last September's shooting at Cornell Square Park in the Back of the Yards neighborhood that wounded 13 people.
The scene around the park's bloodied basketball court was littered with 7.62x39 shell casings, rounds consistent with witnesses' descriptions of a gunman wielding an AK-47 assault rifle. The type of weapon used in that shooting remains relatively rare for street violence. Federal data show 97 percent of shooting deaths involve handguns.
But Mayor Rahm Emanuel has called for a nationwide assault weapon ban and sought to tighten the city's ban after the state legislature approved concealed-carry laws.
There must have been "guns in here" written on the side of the container car in spray paint.
Or maybe it was the notation of "Smith and Wesson Small Arms Company" in the computer and waybill listing. The shipments from McGraw-Hill Textbook Publishing Company never get touched in Englewood.
In the 70's and the 80's when I worked the westside, when the trains around Madsion and Rockwell slowed down, the ghetto rats would come flying out and break into all the cars. It looked like a relief truck bringing food to Etheopia. Didn't know where they all came from.
These firearms would not have been shipped in a "boxcar." Boxcars are used for one bulk shipment of a large amount of a commodity; ten thousand cases of nuts and bolts, say.
Today, "LCL" -- "Less Than Carload" -- freight, the "package trade," moves in truck trailers or containers on open flatcars or "well cars", the kind that take four containers -- "double-stacks."
Shippers like UPS, FedEx, etc. collect small shipments and get them into a trailer headed for the right point. At arrival, the trailer goes off the train, onto rubber again, and goes to a distribution center where the contents are sorted onto smaller delivery trucks for local delivery.
There is anything and everything you can think of in there -- and you aren't going to find it by breaking into 12,000 feet of trailers and containers, one after another, and sorting through it all by the tracks.
My money is on inside knowledge; someone made a phone call giving container/trailer number, RR car number, train number...with all those employees in these huge facilities, there's at least one banger?
But then --
"I thought the same thing at first, that it's gotta be an inside job.
5/10/2014 02:51:00 AM
"But there were more than 13 in there.
Yes, at least 13 ARs out of a total of 50 "guns."
"If it were truly an inside job they would have known how many would be in there, and brought a vehicle big enough to transport more than a small fraction of them."
Yeah, hard to see them stopping at just 13...
"I want to chalk this up to hitting the 'hood lottery. We all know they roll the dice and hit those boxcars all the time. Sometimes the whole 'hood gets the same new shoes at the same time, sometimes they all have the same winter jackets, sometimes they all get the same TV's."
One time everybody got binoculars at the same time. Standing all over the street looking at each other through them. Lasted one day.
"I think a blind squirrel found his proverbial nut."
That could be too...
"I don't get why they let any trains sit on that part of track for an extended period of time."
They try real hard not to, but there is always an unavoidable period while they're putting the train together, or a wait for signals to "go." They try to keep them rolling, even 2 MPH, to keep the slack tight so goblins can't uncouple cars, etc. RR police do roll along with spotlights, etc.
Englewood has been a bad spot for this for at least forty years -- crews keep the windows shut and doors locked going through, and when they had cabooses they never went out on the platform without a lighted red flare in their hand or they'd be robbed/assaulted.
We can hope that they'll brag, show them up and down the block, and today even put up a "we bad" video on the Tube for us, wavin em around...
...and this story came out on SCC first.
All the deer ran and hid.
As Chicago magazine says, there are about 100,000 crazy people out there working day and night to keep zones backlogged, Morgue full up, ERs on bypass, etc. This won't make much difference one way or the other.
Good to know about the theft, though.
These thugs that work in these rail yards are total assholes, I go into the yards with my part time job and I see a whole lot, Back in the day we recovered about 10 Winchester rifles taken from a UPS trailer transported into Chicago from Indiana. the problem is that they were not impressed when we notified the railroad police of the recovery, They usually put a big bolt thru the trailer door lock and bend it over but big bolt cutters do the job, they need to use case hardened steel and park these loads up near the front offices.
Same thing has happened in Louisville
http://www.wdrb.com/story/25205191/fbi-louisville-police-to-address-youth-gang-memo
YNO members are "armed in a major way." There is apparently a "gun train" that comes through the West End (specific location unknown) and stops for a couple hours every Sunday night (the reason for this stop is unknown). This train is legitimately transporting firearms from suppliers to retailers to be sold. The train is apparently heavily guarded by armed individuals, but YNO members have figured out how to sneak onto the train and steal guns.
No idea how much of that is true but that is what the FBI says
