Well Lookie Here
- Part of a shipment of semiautomatic assault rifles was stolen this week from a freight train container at a rail yard in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, federal authorities and a railroad spokesman said.
The 13 Smith and Wesson M and P15 Sport rifles were stolen from a yard located in the 6100 block of South Lafayette Avenue sometime between Sunday and Tuesday, a spokesman with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said.
"We're hoping to recover them before they're … used in any type of crime," said Special Agent Thomas Ahern, spokesman for the ATF's Chicago field office.
We imagining that somehow, this is the fault of Concealed Carry owners and Chicago ought to ban "assault" weapons because guns are evil and people (and folks) shouldn't have guns. Because it couldn't possibly be the fault of the jagoffs who broke into a parked boxcar in Englewood.
We certainly hope that the ATFE people are looking into the possibility of an inside job. Even 10 G's wouldn't bet on the odds of a parked train in with a bunch of guns on board just happening to get hit while parked in Englewood.

True as always SCC, looks like another inside job, wonder if this is another of the "fast n furious" recreations that was created by Eric holder?
Guns? Who cares?
The real problem is "semi-automatic" knives with "extended" "assault" blades:

Nothing that pious homilies from Shifty Emanuel and ( -- insert name of sanctimonious north shore liberal here) can't solve.
We need to call these guys in:

Case would be solved.
Another reason to bring in the Federal Government Law to restore trust for the honest residents.
My Minnesota Wild won 4-2. Does that mean 10G won his bet?
Uh, someone already posted about this on the blog a couple days ago.
Maybe this should have been mentioned in roll call. ..ya know.. officer safety. I guess uniform inspection is more important
Wtf!!!!!! With all these rail companies having their own police force Gee, you think someone would mandate that perhaps In this case Norfolk and Southern RR police would have been mandated to keep a police unit on the trailer while it was delayed here?????
I don't know. ....13 is an unlucky number.
Maybe ATFE took them so they could walk them into Mexico, reinforcing an ally while gaining traction against the 2nd amendment.
Why is Holder not in prison ?
The problem was there were none of those gun decals with the red circle and the line through them.
Heard about this on WGN-TV you think they hit an armory and drove off with 13 Tanks.
They made a huge deal they were shipped with 30-round clips and used a NATO round bullets. Geez, did the reporter ever shoot a gun in his life??
Big deal, they ran off with some standard, semi-automatic sporting rifles. Let's all shake in our boots.
And then they paraded all the South Side "git rid of guns" crowd who have yet to have any influence in their neighborhood.
"We need to keep these types of guns off the street".
Yeah - we need to keep them in our homes to protect us from all this crime.
Talk about over-blowing a story. WGN gets the "Chicken Little Award" for broadcasting with a "sky-is-falling, everybody-panic" mentality.
I dunno, depending on the line I'd consider that bet! I thought the same thing at first, that it's gotta be an inside job.
But there were more than 13 in there. If it were truly an inside job they would have known how many would be in there, and brought a vehicle big enough to transport more than a small fraction of them.
I want to chalk this up to hitting the 'hood lottery. We all know they roll the dice and hit those boxcars all the time. Sometimes the whole 'hood gets the same new shoes at the same time, sometimes they all have the same winter jackets, sometimes they all get the same TV's.
I think a blind squirrel found his proverbial nut.
I don't get why they let any trains sit on that part of track for an extended period of time.
The train companies have been cutting back their security for years too. Money is on the inside job theory
Article says the weapons were "stolen this week."
Basic journalism 101 says you report the when. Most articles are more specific than just "this week xyz happened."
Why did the ATF wait so long to release a press release on this one?
Or, why did the media wait so long to report this to the public?
Just curious. . .
What a coincidence that out of all the freight cars on the railroad tracks and these mind reading robbers happen to find the one carrying them rifles. Pretty mind boggling I say. What baffles me is that it occurred in the worst crime area in the city as the freight train suddenly came to rest there giving these criminals enough time to steal the only freight car that really matters to the criminals. Amazing, or is someone in the freight distribution business tipping off the criminals...
Operation Fast and Furious Pt. II?
Feds observing guns walking across the border into Englehood to see where they end up?
>Snicker!<
They must have a great spy make up.Don't get me wrong the weapons are above grade military type's.
Since when is an assault rifle a semiautomatic? Either they were assault rifles, or semiautomatic rifles.
Was the train car up on milk crates and the wheels gone?
anyone shipping assault rifles, knowing how much our government wants them banned, and lets a box car load unattended in ENGLEWOOD? Nope I dont buy this for 1 minute... I call bullshit , I call inside JOB ..
Chicago is the last stop on banning these damn evil weapons...
Chicago will show the rest of the states just how bad they are dammit...
VERY SAD what this has come to
Read over Citywides yesterday that shell casings from assault rifle found in 8200 Block of South Cottage in alley, so that was the demonstration for the buyer.
Didn't report how many boxcars were broken into before they hit the jackpot? Given enough time and they can shop til they drop! Who is going to call about all the pounding noise in that area?
These cargo thefts have been taking place for years in these freight yards both from the trucks and parked trains. Nothing has changed.
Inside job is right. Do you know how many bangers work for the railroad? And in trucking for that matter.
Guns are ALWAYS stolen from box cars out south.
I remember this happened a few times before. Why in the world would you travel through englewood with this of fire power? Sounds like another inside job!
01:55:00
WGN did the same thing when that retail theft offender decided to commit a crime, get caught, resist arrest and then slam his face into a light pole. Rahms whores.
I wonder what happened to all of the bertetta neos from last year? About 230 of them.
Fast and furious moves to Chicago
Didnt the feds learn from fast and furious...
You know what would've prevented this? Place some red-light cameras which now have the ability to pan, at all RR crossings! They're sure to keep the public safe, just like the cameras on the CTA!!!
Now, who would wants to buy some land in the FL Everglades?!?!
Now the Bud Biliken parade gonna be on high alert!
It's stolen rifles, so it's gotta to be Holders fault.
Perhaps you feeble minded morons can put the bullshit theories aside & talk to Railway Police sometime. Years back they boosted a shitload of S&W 9MMs.. When firearms are shipped by freight train, sometimes the miscreants hit the jackpot
"a parked train in with a bunch of guns on board."
rail is terribly inefficient and overpriced for such few, small items being shipped. that was a light weight, partial pallet....shipped railcar?
something stinks way high here.....
How about not buying into the anti's "assault rifle" blather? These were semiauto rifles, period. No more, no less.
Its not the first time this happens
I have a million dollar solution for the train companies. Wait for it... Here it comes... DON'T BE IN, AROUND, NEAR THE GHETTO!
Are we sure that they are not part of a DOJ/ATF plan to arm Mexican Drug Cartels?
They stopped at Englewood. And they are wondering why it was burglarized? I haven't met one resident in Englewood who I'd want to be neighbors with. Just saying. I'm not racist. Just like it quiet and peaceful.
I love the last few paragraph in the story. 97% of of the firearms used in crimes are handguns so Da Rahmfather wants to ban Modern Sporting Rifles - AKA "assault weapons"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
City leaders have often denounced the presence of such weapons in Chicago, pointing to incidents such as last September's shooting at Cornell Square Park in the Back of the Yards neighborhood that wounded 13 people.
The scene around the park's bloodied basketball court was littered with 7.62x39 shell casings, rounds consistent with witnesses' descriptions of a gunman wielding an AK-47 assault rifle. The type of weapon used in that shooting remains relatively rare for street violence. Federal data show 97 percent of shooting deaths involve handguns.
But Mayor Rahm Emanuel has called for a nationwide assault weapon ban and sought to tighten the city's ban after the state legislature approved concealed-carry laws.
There must have been "guns in here" written on the side of the container car in spray paint.
Or maybe it was the notation of "Smith and Wesson Small Arms Company" in the computer and waybill listing. The shipments from McGraw-Hill Textbook Publishing Company never get touched in Englewood.
Wtf!!!!!! With all these rail companies having their own police force Gee, you think someone would mandate that perhaps In this case Norfolk and Southern RR police would have been mandated to keep a police unit on the trailer while it was delayed here?????
In the 70's and the 80's when I worked the westside, when the trains around Madsion and Rockwell slowed down, the ghetto rats would come flying out and break into all the cars. It looked like a relief truck bringing food to Etheopia. Didn't know where they all came from.
These firearms would not have been shipped in a "boxcar." Boxcars are used for one bulk shipment of a large amount of a commodity; ten thousand cases of nuts and bolts, say.
Today, "LCL" -- "Less Than Carload" -- freight, the "package trade," moves in truck trailers or containers on open flatcars or "well cars", the kind that take four containers -- "double-stacks."
Shippers like UPS, FedEx, etc. collect small shipments and get them into a trailer headed for the right point. At arrival, the trailer goes off the train, onto rubber again, and goes to a distribution center where the contents are sorted onto smaller delivery trucks for local delivery.
There is anything and everything you can think of in there -- and you aren't going to find it by breaking into 12,000 feet of trailers and containers, one after another, and sorting through it all by the tracks.
My money is on inside knowledge; someone made a phone call giving container/trailer number, RR car number, train number...with all those employees in these huge facilities, there's at least one banger?
But then --
"I thought the same thing at first, that it's gotta be an inside job.
5/10/2014 02:51:00 AM
"But there were more than 13 in there.
Yes, at least 13 ARs out of a total of 50 "guns."
"If it were truly an inside job they would have known how many would be in there, and brought a vehicle big enough to transport more than a small fraction of them."
Yeah, hard to see them stopping at just 13...
"I want to chalk this up to hitting the 'hood lottery. We all know they roll the dice and hit those boxcars all the time. Sometimes the whole 'hood gets the same new shoes at the same time, sometimes they all have the same winter jackets, sometimes they all get the same TV's."
One time everybody got binoculars at the same time. Standing all over the street looking at each other through them. Lasted one day.
"I think a blind squirrel found his proverbial nut."
That could be too...
"I don't get why they let any trains sit on that part of track for an extended period of time."
They try real hard not to, but there is always an unavoidable period while they're putting the train together, or a wait for signals to "go." They try to keep them rolling, even 2 MPH, to keep the slack tight so goblins can't uncouple cars, etc. RR police do roll along with spotlights, etc.
Englewood has been a bad spot for this for at least forty years -- crews keep the windows shut and doors locked going through, and when they had cabooses they never went out on the platform without a lighted red flare in their hand or they'd be robbed/assaulted.
We can hope that they'll brag, show them up and down the block, and today even put up a "we bad" video on the Tube for us, wavin em around...
...and this story came out on SCC first.
"...they ran off with some standard, semi-automatic sporting rifles."
One time it was some Win. #94 .30-30s, lever actions ca. 1898.
All the deer ran and hid.
As Chicago magazine says, there are about 100,000 crazy people out there working day and night to keep zones backlogged, Morgue full up, ERs on bypass, etc. This won't make much difference one way or the other.
Good to know about the theft, though.
I don't know why people are so surprised. I often find "assault rifles" when I go around the city. Things like that just happen.
Sport rifles, but wonder who gave the heads up what train cars they were in? There is a leak somewhere the size of the titanic, the railroad has cut coppers to save money so the top 1% can get more. Rolls Royce announced recently that never in their history have they ever had such back orders on $500,000+ custom vehicles! the rich getting richer by cutting out the middle class!
You guys need to know you elected thieves you take our hard earned pension there will be serious problems, your not Robin Hood you don't take from the rich that pay you off you take from the middle class and give to he rich backwards isn't it?
Inside job, I would take that one to the bank ! The employee' that dispatch know what is in those trailers !
Hope ATF and CPD get those weapons back. Now the patrol guys have to have their stress level jump up higher. Viva the district people of this city. Treated like shit and do the job well under shit bosses and a public that hates them.
I would't put it beyond A.G. Eric Holder to pull a "Fast & Furious" operation here with Chicago Gangs.
These thugs that work in these rail yards are total assholes, I go into the yards with my part time job and I see a whole lot, Back in the day we recovered about 10 Winchester rifles taken from a UPS trailer transported into Chicago from Indiana. the problem is that they were not impressed when we notified the railroad police of the recovery, They usually put a big bolt thru the trailer door lock and bend it over but big bolt cutters do the job, they need to use case hardened steel and park these loads up near the front offices.
Ride around the RR tracks off of Congress at the once a upon a time ROCKWELL Gardens Projects. The RR constructed a steel wall 20 feet high arounf the tracks with raxor bard wirw. It still looks like the Berlin Wall. The rats still breeched it and one time a trailers that contained NIKE' shoes were all goen.
HEY! Let's be honest-include a small CPD percentage there too...sad but true.
Just sayin'
Listening to WBBM radio this evening, it may have been a statement by an ATF spokesperson. He stated the thieves didn't get any ammo. This is how dumb they think the public is. Golly gee, guess it's not so bad then.
Retired
What's interesting is how did this make the news? The stuff I saw on the AMFN was LES-FOUO now it's not?
What happened???
Instead of Operation Fast and Furious Part II,
call it Operation Slow and Flustered...
There semi-auto rifles not assault weapons just the same they are a lot more powerful than what we carry still I don't want to be hit by either.
Why did ATFE wait to notify the public? Should Ch.5 Investigative reporter Mary Ann Ahern interview ATFE spokesman Tom Ahern about this? Probably not since they're married. Ch. 5 "fighting for you."
I am mortified, I cant believe this is going on in Swindlehood.
Has anybody asked California State Senator Lee or Shrimp boy yet ?
I really hope it's the good guys that took them.
Same thing has happened in Louisville
http://www.wdrb.com/story/25205191/fbi-louisville-police-to-address-youth-gang-memo
YNO members are "armed in a major way." There is apparently a "gun train" that comes through the West End (specific location unknown) and stops for a couple hours every Sunday night (the reason for this stop is unknown). This train is legitimately transporting firearms from suppliers to retailers to be sold. The train is apparently heavily guarded by armed individuals, but YNO members have figured out how to sneak onto the train and steal guns.
No idea how much of that is true but that is what the FBI says
