Retiree Crime Fighter

  • A man was critically injured trying to chase down a teenage boy who police say stole his car Saturday morning in Hyde Park, and a retired Chicago homicide detective and his son went after and caught the suspected car thief.

“I told myself, ‘I’m retired, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to let this kid get away,” said Gerald Hamilton, the retired homicide detective.

“So I became unretired for a few minutes.”
We doubt that Rahm is going to pay him though. Very good job regardless Detective.

Is it really worth it? Is it worth risking you and your son's life for some asshole that the SA's office probably won't even charge with a felony? And what if the victim doesn't cooperate or sign complaints? And what if the jag off turns and gets a lucky shot off and kills you? All for what?!!

Hope the victim survives. Take the keys out of your car when you're gassing up; not just to keep thieves from grabbing the car, but it's a fire hazard to gas the car while it's running.

Sad story see it often. People leave their car with the keys in it, engine running, and the door unlocked. . . .

After they charge the teen, maybe the car owner should get a ticket for leaving a motor vehicle unattended with the motor running.

Nice job Gerald!

You've figured it out. The only cool job on this department is homicide detective! Were Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh FTO's and Evidence Techs? Hell no. The cops with those jobs are depicted in great cop movies like Lethal Weapon as bumbling morons. Was Dirty Harry a traffic specialist??? That wouldn't have made for a very exciting Dirty Harry... They would have had to name the movie Boring Traffic instead. You need to watch more cop movies!

You are not a cop. HE was the victim, you coward. And HE decided to take action against a criminal to stop a crime. That's what cops do. The lawyers and the judges let them go, but on the street, COPS stop them and their barbaric behavior.

To the idiot in 25 who won't let things settle down and wants to air dirty laundry on here, two things for you:

1. He's a good lieutenant who helps everyone and is not an asshole. Go somewhere else if you think you have it bad. 15 or 10 may be the perfect districts for you.

2. A boss asking you to show up to work when roll call starts isn't a bad boss. A boss telling you that you can't go 2 districts away for a 90 minute lunch isn't a bad boss. A boss telling you to stop fucking around on the radio isn't a bad boss.

Boo hoo, he won't let you do whatever you want! Shut up and
stop acting like a whiny bitch. Go work for a company and see what happens after you pull that shit twice. He's always bended over backwards for many people and that's the thanks he gets?

5/10/2014 06:47:00 PM

No he has not. He is a micromanager that creates more work than necessary for everyone. that is why he is a bad boss.

Stay in the office and approve reports. that is your job. Don't start riding around on the street after 15 years inside and think you know what the hell is going on.

don't think it is the same police department and that everything is legit.

Good job GH & Son.

Aside from this, some time before I retired I had to testify in a "Cold Case", DNA match found offender after ten years later case in court.

I was still on the job so I got paid but the Detectives who worked the original case and were retired did not get paid for their testimony and time in court did not.

It's a minor issue I know for FOP and PBPA but if officially called back by subpoena officers should be compensated.

If a retired officer got a subpoena from a defense attorney with a check for $25 could he send it back and say it isn't enough.

Per 1983 if a person acts in good faith without acting in a reckless manner they are immune from civil proceedings and monetary damages. They can sue, but after a motion is filed it will get immediately pitched in court when the defendants show that this was clearly done in good faith.. which any intelligent and reasonable person can see. If you don't know this or even know what "1983" means or refers too then do some reading before you post.. thanks.

How about this, stop being a pussy! Everybody should have a moral compass to live by, which yours seems to only point to yourself. When is enough, enough? Where do YOU draw the line in the sand?
Will you put on your police hat if you see a rape or a murder or a child being abducted? I realize that they are not the same, but the principle stands.
Go hide under a rock and then start complaining when nobody did anything when something happens to you.

Everyone prepare for about a dozen comments by disgruntled people like this.

Believe it or not the silent majority of police officers would have reacted immediately and done the exact same thing. The majority of officers took this job to help people and will continue to do so at great risk to themselves. It is the loud mouth dogs that comment the most when they should be congratulating the officer on doing something they would never have done.

The people leaving the "is it worth it" comments never had the mentality to be the police to begin with, they saw a steady pay check with benefits. Yes, I am a veteran who has been injured, sued, in multiple shootings, yet I still do the job I love and try to help the citizens that need the police. I do it because I want to. Now go back to your hole watching Netflix while pretending you used to be the police in front of the PPOs.

Is it really worth it? Is it worth risking you and your son's life for some asshole that the SA's office probably won't even charge with a felony? And what if the victim doesn't cooperate or sign complaints? And what if the jag off turns and gets a lucky shot off and kills you? All for what?!!

I say all in the name of being a man not a coward. To maintain courage in the face of danger-especially in front of his son- even if he is 28. If you think the proper action would be to look the other way and not get involved, then quit the police dept. and become a Lincoln Park Chad who would stand behind the nearest trixie with a dumb look on his face.

Yes it is. Sorry you don't enjoy being a police officer anymore. What he did was what he signed up to do as a cop. This job is risky. If you can't handle that risk, go do something else. Heck of a job for a retired guy.

He gets paid on the 30th along with the rest of the retirees. He wants to play Police, that's on him. He should remind himself there is No IOD when your retired.

Nice job GH. About the sheep business.

Some time ago I had a conversation with one of our CPD Chaplains about doing things to keep up the morale of the officers on the watch.

He commented that, "You take very good care of you flock."

"Well I could never think of them as a flock of sheep, more like a pack."

"As in wolves." he replied.

"No, Cub Scouts."

O.T. but should be of interest. Received this from Attorney who successfully defended myself and partner in multi-million dollar lawsuit several years ago. Perhaps you could post the info about the screening to anyone interested..... "I'm reaching out to you as a former client of Andrew M. Hale & Associates. As you know, we are very passionate about defending CPD in civil lawsuits.

I wanted to let you know that I have co-produced a documentary movie about the Anthony Porter CPD case. Porter was arrested for a double murder that took place in Washington Park back in 1982. Several witnesses, who knew Porter, identified him as the shooter. Porter was convicted and sentenced to death. Fast forward to 1998 when Porter was getting close to being executed. David Protess and some journalism students from Northwestern began "investigating" Porter's case. Shortly thereafter, a private investigator working with Protess coerced another guy (Alstory Simon) to confess to the murder. As a result, Porter was released from prison, Simon was put in prison (where he remains today), and the CPD was highly criticized. Porter wound up suing the City of Chicago and several CPD detectives. At trial Porter claimed, for the first time, that he had been tortured and asked the jury to award him $24M. The jury rejected Porter's claims and ruled for the City and CPD. We believe that Alstory Simon is innocent. We also believe CPD did a great job in investigating the case. The State's Attorney's Office is currently re-investigating the case. This Chicago Tribune editorial provides some background.

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2013-10-29/opinion/porter-ct-edit-1029-20131029_1_medill-innocence-project-paul-ciolino-jerry-hillard

We are having a screening of the documentary movie on May 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Pickwick Theatre in Park Ridge. A formal invitation is attached. Since our movie has a pro-CPD message, we are trying to have a strong CPD turnout at our screening. We would love to see you there. Please pass this invitation on to your CPD colleagues. Feel free to invite family/friends, as the Theatre is huge. Please RSVP to the email address aporterrsvp@gmail.com and indicate how many tickets (it's free) that you would like. Looking forward to it!"

I do agree but it is a diiferent era out there. Its real easy for media to spin stuff how they see fit to help a politician get a vote, especially off duty. I would not want to lose my house over it. I am a firm believer in
concealed carry for citizens as well. But I am waiting for the first citizen to have to use justified deadly force against a shitbird only to have a lawyer sue on behalf of estate of shitbird. Good job retired Det. G. Hamilton. Some exempt should bring up the idea to the mayor and superintendent to hire Gerald Hamilton as a special consultant to instruct newly promoted detectives and recruits in the police academy. They could benefit from Hamilton's instruction and make more quality felony arrest.I am certain with Hamilton's instructions the homicide rate in the detective division would increase.

Yet another good citizen steps up to the plate...

Bystander pulls boy from crashed SUV after driver flees

6:51 a.m. CDT, May 12, 2014

"A 3-year-old boy left alone in a crashed SUV was pulled to safety by a bystander moments before the car caught fire...

"The SUV struck an abandoned building in the 2000 block of West 59h Street about 11:45 p.m. Sunday...

"When a police sergeant arrived on the scene, a bystander was performing CPR on the boy and the driver had fled...The SUV was in flames.

"...the bystander had spotted the unresponsive boy inside the SUV and pulled him out...The sergeant and the bystander continued CPR until paramedics arrived The boy was taken to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

"Police have located the boy's mother but are still searching for the driver of the vehicle...The relationship between the boy's mother and the driver was not immediately clear."

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-police-bystander-pulls-boy-from-crashed-suv-after-driver-flees-20140512,0,6104624.story

Could be another iteration of The Deadly Live-In Boyfriend With Warrants, or maybe babymama left the kid in the car and it got stolen...who knows these days.

Anyway -- super job by the rescuer. The good Lord saw what you did that night, even if we don't know your name.

I would like to address the retiree that complains about officers not visiting or calling after they retire. Don't you understand that we are still struggling to get through the job on a daily basis and are busy trying to deal with family life, work second jobs, etc.? I wish I had the luxury of time like the retirees have to do whatever the heck I wanted to, instead of trying to live in the past. I respect all retirees for the job they did, but I think after a while, they forget what it's like to be in this environment day after day just trying to survive. I hope that when I retire, I can write a new chapter and stop thinking of myself purely as an ex-cop, and not expect too much when I get stopped for a traffic offense.

Don't feel bad, I did the same thing. I think back often to my early days on the department, each day filled with adventure and new experiences. Glad I did it. Some people may give him a ration of shit but are they really the type that would get involved in an off duty arrest? I doubt it. This is exactly what H.R. 218 was passed to do. If the politikritters hadn't figured that Retirees would intervene in violent crimes at no cost to taxpayers, they wouldn't have passed the law giving Retired LEO's carry privileges across the entire Country and not let us live in Limbo as Retired LEO's with no legal status to carry concealed for all these years until the Illinois Legislature could pass a CCW bill in Illinois, one I might add has more places where you cannot carry than places that you can. That law also exempts us from restrictions placed on Illinois CCW Holders, Another reason to get your IROCC Carry rather than the cheaper Illinois CCW Permit. Criticize him for intervening? Nope! I applaud him for his actions as he is still a Sheepdog. That is something that was bred into him and trained to do. That does not stop after you retire. All you nay sayers, imagine if the victim was your grandmother. Wouldn't you want somebody, anybody intervening to protect her instead of being a good sheeple?

Retirement? It's okay but not all that it's cracked up to be. Not always the luxury you may think...and not about living in the past.

However the past working conditions were certainly better than they are now. Thats where life long friends are made. Thats where some make a difference.

You won't know what that feeling the retired P/O felt in his post above, that is until the day you cross that line to retirement.
Careful what you wish for...
It will be here sooner than you think and then you can wonder where all the time went!

You need to get on with your life and enjoy retirement.Sorry we don't have time out of are busy day to call you every day and tell you how great you were and talk about the old times.Maybe you should get off that lazy boy chair and try enjoying the good new days that are coming instead of being pissed still about being forced out at 63.It is what it is so move on.

I am certain with Hamilton's instructions the homicide rate in the detective division would increase.

I did not write the above.

But I would interpret what is written as meaning the this Detective would investigate deaths by shooting, stabbing and so on honestly and with integrity and classify them as HOMICIDES and not try to hide them as NON-CRIMINAL DEATH INVESTIGATIONS.

The Union League Club of Chicago will hold their Spring Luncheon this Wednesday. Their guest speaker will be the new Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Chicago Field Division, Robert J. Holley. "Mr. Holley will discuss the strategies needed to challenge Chicago’s gang and violent crime problems that currently plague the city."

May I suggest that the first thing they do is review the case reporting. Find out who ordered that not just violent crimes but property crimes be downgraded to give a "crime is down" picture.

Then do a Manpower Audit. Find out which areas of the city have become POLICE SERVICE DESERTS because Rahm has not been hiring police and McCarthy has been pulling them away from a lot of neighborhoods.

Remember Rahm and McCarthy, it is a crime in itself to lie to an FBI Agent.

To the posters who are banging the retired Sgt. that said the ept. does not care about you after you retire, your reply was that you are too busy to call anyone due to you having many things to do during your busy day with your part time jobs, kids, house etc. well what about when you get to work, yep, I'm really sure young ass is so so busy deciding where to eat and who gives you a deal, what chrome you are going to put on your Harley, or what new tattoo to get, Fuck off and have some respect for the retirees who spent much more time on this job then you will probably do. I don't think the retired Sgt. is just sitting on his lazyboy and doing nothing, and I'm sure he is not thinking to harm himself. all he wrote was the truth , nobody gives a fuck about you when you retire especially people that you took care of, they forget what you did for them, they will just shop for another Sgt. to suck up to and sign his or her slips. And finally, if your young ass stops me for some Bullshit Traffic offense, you had better treat me with respect or your ass will be taken to the woodshed, tatoos and all.
