There Go the Arson Numbers

  • When Turhan Ice woke up at his South Side home early this morning, he was jolted when he looked out to find his 1999 GMC Yukon SUV in flames.

The man was getting ready for his job as a plumber and when he called firefighters he was told they were already on the way. His next thought was wondering what he possibly could have done to make someone so angry they would destroy his work truck.

"It was engulfed in flames," said Ice, 46.

It turned out his vehicle was only one of 14 vehicles that were torched as they sat parked on streets in the Englewood and West Englewood neighborhoods on the South Side overnight, officials said.
We seem to recall some other stories about cars being torched for general amusement. Where was that again? Oh yeah, the banlieue riots across France. The worst of it was in autumn 2005 when 9,000 cars were burned. But on New Years Eve of 2014, "only" 1067 cars were burned by un-assimilated minority youths - Algerian muslims mostly.

Thankfully, CompStat had already migrated across the Atlantic and this was touted as a 10% reduction over New Years Eve 2013.

14 cars were torched, but, thru the Compstat statistical counting method, it was just 1 incident. Poof!!! Killing crime.

This morning the news said 18, then the paper said 9, but it could be as high as 12. How do you state 9 but say "could be". I think journalism requirements for this city's media must have never included a math class. See, that's why crime statistics are so screwed up. The media, and the mayor keep running out of fingers for counting! I only believe SCC's numbers.

You did notice that the rioters were only referred to as youths? Not muslim youths. Calling them by their true moniker might rile up the natives and we can't have that in a pc world.

Cars and trucks manufactured by GMC have a history of spontaneous combustion. Are we sure all of these vehicle fires are arson?

Ha according to con Stat this only counts as one arson.

I'd certainly hope not, as the Field Reporting Guide calls for separate RD #s for each car broken into, vandalized, etcetera when multiple incidents happen on the street. Multiple arsons should be be exception. Had several vehicles been torched in a private parking lot or garage, then it'd be a single RD#.

Moral of the story? Don't let the asshole number crunching magicians at Fort Fellatio tell you anything different. Each car = one incident of arson.

According to the Chicago Mag story Comp(Thermo)Stat doesn't count arsons, so these never happened.

I'll bet it's part of a re-election campaign stimulus program designed to create much needed jobs.

The victims have to buy replacements, right?

'Oh My Jesus!': Gun Violence Interview Gets Up-Close Example

In the middle of the interview as an Englewood resident says that in spite of the hoods reputation that this is one of the safe blocks in Englewood..

Two seconds later BANG-BANG-BANG caught on tape as a man w/rifle is shooting a van...

Video taping gun purchases is gonna fix it. Limits of one gun purchase a month is gonna fix it don't worry.

Well thank god we have 9 street detectives assigned to the Arson Section. For a minute I thought we would not be able to complete a thorough investigation regarding car fires, house fires, bomb threats, post blast investigations, or fires with injuries to civilian and public employees.

Maybe they are trying to remake the old Chicago song, kinda of a prelude to killing crime compstat style, 25 or 6 to 4.
Compstat song sung as they reduce crime!

If a store wants to sell you a cigarette lighter or matches there should be a permit process with a background check...and the sales should be video taped - allow only one a purchase a month.

In fact why not a city ban?

On the other hand an excise tax could be placed on things like BBQ's and fireplaces and that money could help the children.

This is completely off topic: on 30 may (friday). I will be sitting on top of the dunkin donuts store at foster and nagle from 0500 to 1400.
Special Olympics is collecting money for the athletes. If you are in the neighborhood, please come by and throw some money in my bucket. Most dunkin donuts in Illinois are participating with law enforcement to help these athletes.
If you have ever seen these athletes compete you would gladly support it.
Thank-you,

But according to the cry babies on here there are no tax payers in that area. That man wasn't getting ready for a plumbing job, he must of been one of 14 people targeted in a elaborate drug- dealer-scare-off and he was really on his way to drop off a few ounces and after that pick up his new link card.

*sarcasm off*

Watchoo doin workin?

Nobody here work. Nobody get off this block alive.

This has happened before. Guy sitting on his front porch yelled at kids to stop throwing rocks at his work truck, and some character from miles away came back with a pistol and killed him for it.

So the hood devours itself, like a gut-shot hyena twisting, struggling, snapping at its own dangling insides...

When daylight comes, "reverends" shout into bullhorns. Fat ladies in T-shirts bearing slogans march in circles. The crowd grins, makes hand signs, talks into smartphones, and chants "Stop The Violence."

The camera trucks fold up their gear and are gone.

An ominous rustling starts in the bushes. The pack is stirring again.
