Twice Decorated

We didn't see this one the other day - we don't even recall it being on the front page of the Tribune website:
  • It wasn’t the first time Chicago Police Officer Jameka Sherrod had a gun pointed at her head.

The first time she was answering a call about a domestic dispute and shot the gunman dead.  The second time, three years later, she wrestled with a gunman who wounded a partner.

On Tuesday, the 8 ½-year veteran was honored with the department’s highest honor for the second time in her career – the first time that has happened in the more than the half century that the Police Medal has been handed out.
Very well done to Officer Sherrod and all of the other honorees at the Annual Police Recognition Ceremony this past Tuesday.

It's refreshing to know that in a dept. that produces and promotes worthless political hacks like the "Burger Queen", "Henny Penny", West, Rozelle, Maher and Pena, a female officer actually gets involved in real police work?

Kudos to Officer Jameka Sherrod.

I know several officers who've been in similar situations more than once and have gotten s@$t for their efforts and bravery thanx to their moron supervisors who can't or won't write up the attaboy paperwork the correct way. I know coppers that have caught killer(s) of policemen. I know a copper that killed the piece of shit that killed his partner. None of these guys and/or gals were offered shit. That's why there should be a 10 year otj minimum for sergeant and 20 minimum for Lt. That way what you lack in real hands on police work and experience may have found its way into your head by seeing what others do and how they handle things, good , bad or indifferent. That said, congrats officer, glad you came out on top.

Youre right Officer Pickert deserves credit too as well as the 3rd officer who shot the guy The only things are

1 Pickert is on disability and cant get promoted until he returns to active duty. He did receive the Police Medal as did the 3rd Officer whose name I cant recall without re reading the article

2 Sherrod got the Police Medal once before , which is rare...

But Hey I say give them all exempt spots. They did more police work by accident than most of the current Exempts did on purpose

I agree with the response above. I know a lot of great coppers who made unbelievable pinches who's sergeants were too lazy to put them in for a DC or higher. I also agree with the 10 years for a sergeant. That would usually put the person in their mid-late 30's and they're better equipped to deal with patrol officers ... more mature although there's ALWAYS exceptions. With that being said, great job by all the officers involved in this.

Same district, district secretary saw to it her son got awards for anything imaginable. He is Sgt now, surprisingly. So is his wife. Earned, not given.

I agree with you 100%, but it will never happen. The people who want to be supervisors so early in their career, don't understand the importance of putting time in to learn the job. They are so power hungry and self centered they believe in their own mind that they know everything there is to know about the job. They have low self esteem and need to succeed early, often and at any cost to prove their self worth or they consider themselves a failure. These people usually always think they are always right, never admit wrong or not knowing and are usually very vindictive when proven wrong. That's my professional psychological profile, sounds like a lot of our bosses doesn't it?

The most important thing is that no Officers were killed. It's just strange how some get awards and others get ignored. Officer Hummons killed the bad guy at her first shooting, and then Mark Pickert gets shot in his hand saving her a second time. Where are the awards, accolades, articles, or promotions for those two Officers? Some supervisors just push hard for their favorites when it comes to award nominations and snub others. Thank you for your service Officers Pickert and Hummons. Everyone stay safe.

A couple of my teammate's and myself rescued a hostage on archer just west of Ashland in the 009th district in Dec of 2012. It was a robbery gone bad that turned into a HBT job at a massage parlor. Offender was behind a closed door with the hostage, weapons unknown. We could hear the offender was about to rape the victim. The door was breached, hostage rescued and offender taken into custody. Never even given a honorable mention, was told it was part of the job. It's not about the awards, it's about knowing that the supervisors and the department acknowledge that we forfeited our life to save the life of a innocent person. It takes less than 15 minutes to write officers up for an award, but it is still not being done.

Lazy supervision likes to hide behind "why should we put you in for an award for doing your job."

Well if that's the case, there are an awful lot of taken care of supervisors walking around with a chest full of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, croutons and bacon bits...

"Hooray for us but fuck the blue shirts" who do AMAZING Police work day in and day out but aren't recognized for it.

The most notorious was the tossing of xerox boxes full of honorables, awards and other commendations that were found in the 011th commander's bathroom after Starks took over when Ervin retired...

There were several years when nobody on the watches got a damned thing.

But certain tact teams?
"Shhhhhh!"

It was what it is and HQ KNEW that shit was going on...

"Can't have those guys in Patrol gettin' all this here recognition... They might fuck around and get some notion of what their real street value is and we can't have that."

Glad the Blue Suits came out on top.
Sorry the one copper was injured.

Close proximity to a mind-locked asshole with a gun is ALWAYS unpredictable...

You all forget that after the supervisor puts you in for an award, it gets vetted up the chain of command. After getting all your submissions rejected, you might get the message that no one in your hell-hole district is worthy and succumb to the inevitable. Most of the supervisors in the hell hole districts will and do put their guys and gals in for awards. It's the Chief of Patrol (or his minion) that usually pushes them back. They either forgot or just don't give a damn any more.
