Hospital Staff v Police?

Christian charity?
  • On a side note. The head nurse at Little Company of Mary Hospital where the injured Officer went to be treated told a Sgt. that the days of preferential treatment for police and fire are over. Even going so far as yelling at the injured Officers family. Most of the staff at the hospital was extremely confrontational and wouldn't let other Officers that came to lend their support in to see the injured Officer, telling some to get back on the street and do your job. The head nurse and "security guard" should be fired immediately.
We've had a couple of officers offer to take this up through channels with LCM Hospital as there are a number of professional and personal connections with the Order that runs the hospital. This less than professional behavior should be nipped in the bud.

She should be fired. There must be some kind of level of professionalism that the hospital holds its employees to, let alone impolite and confrontational behavior toward people in the hospital. She can act like a bitch in her own living room but not as an employee and representative of LCM.

Not to play devil's advocate, but I went to Little Company on duty for an injury and they were nothing but first class.

Got me right through and everyone there from the triage nurse to the X-ray tech to the attending dr were complete professionals and from what I could see pro-police.

Let's face it...there's haters everywhere. For gods sake, we hate each other! But as far as LCM, I think this incident with this nurse doesn't speak for them all

SCC, I am one of the officer's supervisors. I got back in to work and emailed the CEO of the hospital. His representative got back to me within an hour. She is from a south side family with many police and fire connections. She was extremely apologetic and was appalled at the behavior of the staff at LCM. She also reached out to the officer's sergeant and was going to call the officer directly. I believe this woman's sincerity and believe that this problem will be rectified. I was informed that she called me back today, but I am RDO. This hospital is usually pretty good to us and I believe that the message has already reached the top of their chain. Let's give the hospital administration a chance to atone for their abysmal treatment of TS and his colleagues before we call in a Broken Arrow.

Think about this for a second - AND - I am NOT siding with the LCM staff at all, just making an observation.

There is a LOT of pressure on these people - just like it is on you, so before saying they are "unprofessional", some police have to look in the mirror.

At some hospitals, they are shorthanded. They have to put up with idiot bosses. The people they serve can be demanding, cranky and just plain rude. Some staff do the minimal on the job and slack off on their whole shift so others have to work even harder on their job.

See any parallel to YOUR job environment???

Just like police suffer from burnout on the job - so do nurses at some of these hospitals.

Maybe it is just part of the times we are living in now, but many people are not poster children for professionalism - in MANY areas - not just cops and nurses.

You can call them on it (being professional) but remember - call your own on it as well!!!

Not a LEO, JAFO

The nursing supervisor at LCM is married to a SGT from evergreen park, the ER EMS coordinator is a Oak lawn FF who's brother is a cop somewhere. Many of the ER staff are married or related to CPD of CFD. I find this report hard to believe, as I'm there on a regular basis, and go there with my family, have been inpatient there for extended periods recently.

We pick LCM for injured members from CPD and CFD because of how well the accomidate our needs and the assistance provided by the villages fire and PD.

That being said, there are a few recent hires that are had apples, "I can't breathe" tshirt types, but those people are already on their way out. The church doesn't tolerate that type of behavior. any comments made were made by an individual, not the hospital as a whole.

Sounds like someone there got a great big dose of self-righteous Ferguson-style "hate the police" up their behind. Probably all wound up about a "murder" that never occurred.

So let their "security guard" handle the next bug-eyed crazy doper tearing up the ER. Hell of an attitude to throw when attacks on hospital staff have been increasing.

Putting it in perspective -- they should see how hospitals in the Middle East have to operate. Whole ER slick with blood and jammed with shouting, hysterical young men waving AKs until you can't hardly squeeze past. "You fix him first! You fix him first!" Seems like we are only inches from that here sometimes.

Count your blessings over there, huh?

I work in 022 and have been there countless times due to the fact 022 is the closest CPD district bordering the hospital. We get every "walk-in", traffic accident or doa transported by CFD no matter where it occurs in Chicago so we're there several times a day.
I've also been there many times for injured officers.
At least in my experiences, the staff was very polite & helpful. Sure, some of the staff can get ornery but walk through that waiting room sometime. It's like a chucky cheese. Little rats running around screaming, no parental control whatsoever. It's turned into a roseland west due to all the ghetto mutts that go there.
Just as we do, others can get worn down by dealing with ignorant asses all day long.
It's not an excuse as I don't know any of the parties involved but i can definitely see why this played out the way it did.
Be safe!!!!!!

" We've had a couple of officers offer to take this up through channels with LCM Hospital as there are a number of professional and personal connections with the Order that runs the hospital. This less than professional behavior should be nipped in the bud."

It should be handled on an 'individual case' basis, through channels, and not fall into the liberal, Communist present-day leanings.(Blame/punish everyone)
What next? Marching, and chanting 'What do we want, dead ER staff, when do we want it, now!?"

If true, I agree it needs to be properly addressed AND rectified.

Remember also that when you respond to a hospital or a mental care facility and they request that you disarm your self, give up your gun, before going in to the psych ward or building where the mentals are housed , don't do it. Nowhere are we allowed to,or supposed to comply with such a request. Tell the person in charge that you will not relinquish your weapon and ask that the parties involved be brought out to YOU. Hey my wife is a long time nurse at LCM. They have recently had a turnover with retirements and the death of a executive. The outside hired replacements are not exactly the right fit for the once tight knit family oriented community hospital. Their finances are a bit thin since the good sisters opened a clinic in the Gresham area. The newer management is trying to make up the lost funds by putting the screws to their employees by making them work longer hours with less support staff all while they are getting more demanding "self pay" patients. I had noticed the changes when I used to go there to have tests done. I felt like a stranger at cook county hospital.
Bottom line is, like the Police, not all nurses are assholes.

We need to bring back the Officer Friendly program. The head nurse needs mandatory cultural law enforcement awareness classes, police appreciation/police sensitivity/police diversity training and corrective procedural social interaction justice with peace officers. This will correct her intolerance, her ignorance, her bias, her bigotry practiced by that giving head nurse. Hey Miss Lady Head nurse, your about to get a dose of your own medicine from your hospital's white shirts. You put the case on yourself all by yourself. Why would you act up and create all this drama? Certainly, no reflection on the other medical professionals at this hospital.

Nurses & Drs get BIG X play when it comes to routine traffic stops, party's, and most everything else. This could be a QOL event for them. A warning or a "hey, yea, I know her/him" and they bounce from the stop w/out so much as a harsh tone. That can be stopped.
An injured on duty PO is serious business. How some1 can understand the intricacies of the human body & not understand a Peace Officer injured situation is something I'll certainly never comprehend.
Anyway, by all means, a most speedy recovery to the PO.
BTW, stay out of Christ. They can't handle their normal influx.

The Little Company of Mary staff should move forward and wear blue ribbons showing a grass roots support for police. Blue bows should be affixed in and around the hospital grounds promoting awareness. Hospital administrators should hold a police appreciation themed celebration complete with pastries and gourmet coffee. Community relations officers can take pictures of uniformed police officers wearing white lab coats and stethoscopes while the doctors can adorn crown caps with those polished shiny shields. Hospital faculty and police can bond forming a civil lasting partnership between the two professions who serve and protect to the betterment of our society.

Is this a prelude to obamacare? Has social engineering infected the medical staffs like a herpes virus? President obama warned us that doctors choose amputation instead of treating a diabetic infections when he was selling his disastrous health care mandate on America. You may go to the E.R. for an on duty hangnail and walk out a double amputee eligible for S.S.I. disability. Moral of the story, doctors were under assault not that long ago and now police are the bad guys under assault. Some goof in an E.R.room with an agenda does not call for a battle with those who have the power of healing that which is ailing. Respect those doctors and respect those nurses. Don't turn them to the dark side. And officers are reminded not play doctor unless in the privacy of their home with their spouse/domestic partner.

I cant tell you how many times I have seen coppers cursing at the top of their lungs in front of the public including children!!!!!!!

A couple of greedy or stupid cops can screw up any good thing for all the other cops on the job. I've seen it many time.

The same is true with the staff of any hospital. Could the Commander there have a chat with the Chief of that hospital.

I remember the hospitals in the 10th District hold First Responder picnics and golf outings. Someone with some rank needs to speak up for the cops in that district.

According to LCM website, Dennis Reilly is president and
CEO. Let's all send him an email to let him know this is not the proper behavior of healthcare professional.
Also Sister Sharon Anne Walsh heads up board of directors. They also need to know what's going on at their
hospital.
It's a shame, I've always heard good things about LCM.

I was there... Blow Me!

Can't get much worse than what they pulled. They told the injured P.O. (who was transported by ambulance, and lapsing in and out of semi consciousness), to go sit in triage with all the public awaiting service. P.O. who was loopy, and not even sure where he was, did so in full uniform. Sergeant comes in, finds out whats going on, and absolutely does the right thing! Thats when he's told that police and fire no longer have special privleges. It went downhill from there.

You're either a nurse, or married to one and worried, as you should be... If i stop one, from LCM, after witnessing this, its on!

It was a nurse, and the two security guards as well!

Nurses and the hospital have to worry about laws governing confidentiality. Until they get proper clearance, all bets are off and those who are not approved family or friends have to leave. All it takes is one PO to sue for breach of privacy, and the hospital pays out and gets fined by the government.

As a wife of a Chicago Police Officer and as an employee of Little Company of Mary's ER. This whole situation is unprofessional and unfortunate. But one bad egg should not spoil the whole bunch. The question is is it us or them. Who and what started this rift? Maybe it's us that need to look in the mirror.
I recently had to take my grandson to a hospital in Burlington Wisconsin for a minor problem. When I mentioned to the nurse that I was a retired CPD Officer, it was like Moses parting the Red Sea. They couldn't have been more polite or nicer. They sped the entire process along, made sure my grandson was treated quickly and properly and that we were not delayed any more than what was required. So I guess my question is, why would I be treated like a king in Wisconsin and like a POS in Chicago.

Do not do anything that will make things worse.

I knew this one copper who was a miserable S.O.B. to everyone everywhere. So he spends a few days in a hospital and shows his ugly side to all the staff.

On the day he was supposed to be discharged a nurse comes in a tells him he doctor wants an accurate body temperature taken and it must be done with a rectal thermometer. He grips abut it but he is not going to get out if it doesn't get done. So he turns over and zip it goes it and the nurse steps out of the room.

A couple of minutes go by and the copper's partner walks in to drive him home. "What the heck is going on?" he asks.

"Can't you see, I'm getting my temperature taken."

"With a chrysanthemum?"

We needed a laugh.

Every big hospital in Chicago area is so overwhelmed with ER CRAP that it is almost impossible to get treated with an IOD in a timely manner, Christ, Northwestern, Illinois Masonic are all tasked as level 1 Trauma units, when people get transported from 5,6,7 to a downtown hospital something stinks, the southeast side needs a trauma center, what ever happen to the University of Chicago Hospital as a trauma center. I was IOD a few years ago during Loolapalooza and had spent about 7 hrs, in the ER. they are overwhelmed, but some ER's do have people with attitudes. just because they are RN's don't mean they are lovers of the police.

This is not an isolated case. Here's why. Several years ago there was a crazy guy who help us off with a large butcher knife. (016th)
This guy went back inside the residence, and cut off his manhood!
Moments later he was tased and taken control of. CFD paramedics had placed a blanket over his former manhood area and transported to Northwestern Hospital. With and officer in the ambulance to accompany this goof, the ER doctor's first question to the goof was, "did the police do this to you)?
Be careful when your at jobs at these hospitals. Personally, the bond the police, fire, nurses and doctors have drifted miles apart over the years.

I worked in A/2 districts on mids for over twenty years. We used to have a great rapport with the staff from LCM and Christ. We used to party after work all the time. They called us the "breakfast club". We had a blast! I still know a couple nurses from LCM ER, and pray that they weren't involved in this regretful incident.
But because of the constant negative attack by this liberal media, people have become brainwashed and believe their BS lies!
Best wishes for a speedy recovery to the officer that had to deal with an asshole hater that has now started some BS between the police and the LCM staff. But remember this, just like on this job, we have many idiots that get all cops painted in a bad light. So let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.
I hope the supervisors contact with the administrative staff at LCM will deal with the couple assholes that caused this unfortunate situation.
