Really Pushing the Camera Thing

Both papers had articles Friday:
  • [Sun Times] - When Chicago Police Officer Michael Edens began his career 12 years ago, the only high-tech device he had on his uniform was his radio.

But for the past three weeks, he’s been wearing a body camera on his chest in a pilot program in the Shakespeare District. He still is getting used to activating it every time he makes a traffic stop or in other encounters with the public.

“It’s not second-nature yet,” he said.

  • [Tribune] - The body camera being tested by Chicago police Officer Michael Edens can easily be mistaken for a small garage opener.

Once he clicks on a small button in the middle of the camera and hears two beeps, its tiny lens and speakers capture the views and sounds in front of Edens' vest.

During his patrols in recent weeks in the Logan Square neighborhood, Edens has noticed subtle changes in the public's behavior when he shows up to service calls and announces he's recording video and audio.
Amusingly, the justification for all this electronic media is the Ferguson and New York cases, neither of which involved police misconduct, but you know - racism and brutality and all that bull.

When are the bangers and the brass and the ball-less politicians going to be wearing these things anyway?

Here's the real story:

"He still is getting used to activating it every time he makes a traffic stop or in other encounters with the public."

“It’s not second-nature yet,” he said.

See where this is going? Copper will take action to protect himself before activating the camera and the libtards will explode with cover-up and conspiracy stories because it was not on video.

Transparency doesn't mean the public has the right see every single interaction... maybe the white shirts should lead by example and record 24/7. Are the white shirts not the ones who make all of the important policy decisions that the rest of the department is required to follow? Their decisions and the reasoning, both written and unwritten, should be public.

Fat chance of that. I remember when GPS devices were being installed in the squad cars. Fleet Management called in Mayor Daley's limousines for installation of hizzoner's GPS; his security detail wanted tracking devices for his safety.

Daley said no fucking way, don't ask again. Daley refused to allow his own cars to be equipped with GPS. What's good for you is not good for the crooked bastards.

My take on this? Won't matter to the real problems who will still be shooting at you down the gangway or pouring boiling water on babydaddy. Decent people will tend to draw away, avoid, not stop and chat, laugh, casually give neighborhood goings-on info like they used to.

Reminds me of -- When a bigger organization gobbled up my smaller health care provider, I had to sign a form "waiving doctor-patient confidentiality." My doc is hip, works against the system to get you what you need and snickers at it, but as for the rest of them, one learns to lie, omit, and consider very carefully what little one does say. This lack of trust naturally leads to better care, right?

Kind of the same thing with these camera rigs, I think. Two-edged sword. Be good to have it for proof in a hot situation, but will lower the "quality of day-to-day interaction" overall, create an effect opposite to the one desired by "community policing" advocates.

My two cents...

The Government at all levels has spent billions of dollars attempting to build trust between the Public and Police. The camera will cause us to lose that respect and relationship. Many people who would have sought the police to solve problems may now take the law into their own hands to address those issues. And as with everything else, where is the accountability at the highest levels of government? Put those cameras on legislators when they cut deals with Contractors. Instead of just giving polygraph exams to applicants for low level jobs, how about giving them to EVERYONE IN GOVERNMENT? Once again, the Cop is the lab rat for Social Justice Experimentation. "G"

The smoldering wrecks of what were once thriving newspapers are hoping the Department will release some juicy video clips of cops beating unarmed (fill-in-the-blank) youths.

Of course they will edit out anything where the whatever posed a deadly threat to the officer as that wouldn't be right and might bring an extortion plan from Jesse J or Al Not-so-Sharpton.

Get the Illinois law changed on eavesdropping and make Illinois a one party state. I seriously doubt that many backroom political deals would be made if one party had the ability to record the conversation. Can you imagine if the mayor called the super into his office and told him to promote so and so to commander? And this was secretly recorded? A game changer for sure. That is why they do not want this.

If police are required to wear them so should people released for home confinement.

Isn't that right legal affairs? The law would work the same way for people confined at home by the state.

Next make teachers wear body cameras because "it's for the children". The same issues apply to teachers at schools.

Maybe the CTU would oppose this because Karen Lewis has more testosterone than Dr. Dean Sr. PhD

I think folks on our side should use videos to show the truth. The Lying lib media will always use outdated photos of Black criminals to make them look like sweet kids, instead of the live, in our face swearing thugs they are at the time of criminal mayhem. The video of (not so gentle giant) Michael Brown manhandling a small Asian shop keeper made the difference in breaking the media's racist cop narrative.

Speaking of lying libs, the new head of the FBI is apparently a typical pandering liberal who thinks police pick on Black males for no other reason except RACISM.

The British press (Daily Mail) does a much better job of covering American crime and law enforcement than our pathetic MSM:

Body cameras will be the death of proactive policing for the patrol officer. If you encourage body cameras you are not the working police….PERIOD. Now if I do traffic all day: write TVB’s, work 99, write parkers, do a few accident reports, in a slow district, then cameras probably wouldn’t affect me as much. But on the flipside if I deal with the lawless animal barbarians on the street, day in and day out, you can take that camera and shove it up you’re A$$. To the pro-camera fools - an officer can NEVER make a simple mistake or minor lapse of judgment because you are now recorded. The liberal will call this accountability….I call it foolishness. These liberal far left clowns have no idea what we deal with. The criminal element is not held to any standard of law, but we can’t even use a swear word in any dealings with them? And if an expletive is caught on camera to control a situation you think IPRA will be ok with that. “Have fun serving yo time fool, I have an associate degree from Daley college in criminable justice and you should not have swore at that 9 time convicted felon.” If you are content with living a mistake free life than cheer on these garbage cameras. They are a waste of resources and not needed. It’s a shame to say this but these body cameras will cause a loss of life for police officers because its forcing us to be less hands on and less confrontational in fear of receiving a beef. Take all the money that is set toward these pointless cameras and hire more police. That is the only thing that keeps the public and police officers safe. Lastly, you think for one second that the 1,000,000 hours of perfect lawful police camera footage is going to be shown to the public? Of course not, the one incident where a cop screws up is the only thing that the far left media will focus on. Cameras do not help us.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City, once notorious for high crime, broke a record on Thursday with no murders reported for 10 straight days, police said.

The historic calm achieved at 12:01 a.m. Thursday comes on the heels of a notable year - murders in New York City in 2014 fell to an all-time low of 328, the fewest since the New York Police Department started keeping reliable records in 1963.
