- After another violent holiday weekend, Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said Tuesday his department is doing all it can to combat violence rooted in "impoverished neighborhoods" where "people without hope do these kinds of things."
"It's not a police issue, it's a society issue," Johnson told reporters outside police headquarters after a long weekend that saw 65 people shot, 13 of them fatally.
"Impoverished neighborhoods, people without hope do these kinds of things," he said. "You show me a man that doesn't have hope, I'll show you one that's willing to pick up a gun and do anything with it.
"Those are the issues that's driving this violence. CPD is doing its job," he continued.
Now, how about Jesse, Mike, Al, Rahm, Louis, Bobby and all the rest of the assholes who have been blaming the police for every little life-failure start saying the same thing.

Within a decade, homicides had dropped by over 50%.
This in a city that numbers under 250,000 residents. There's no reason to think that Chicago couldn't experience similar drops instead of being embarrassed by having a body count higher than New York and Los Angeles combined.

The democrats in Illinois on the state and local levels could care less about holding criminals to true sentences for their crimes.
The democrats fail to jail people therefore keeping their voting bases higher.
The democrats keep the prison population down and save money on that end only to spend it on some bs frivolous project that no one really cares about.

You'll see parenting go up 1000% if Entitlements are CUT 50% for anyone's family who gets caught using a gun.

If they did they'd have to admit that society's problems are not for the police to solve, nor should the police be blamed for these issues. Bangers hate federal charges. Get sent out of state AND no parole. If you get five years in the federal system you're gone for four years and three months. Perhaps a few months less if you end up in a halfway house on the near West side.
POTUS needs to keep commuting federal sentences so we can open up some room for a new crop of chicago bangers. Keep letting the older idiots out so we can send the younger more violent idiots away.

All I can say is keep going, we have problems over here but nowhere near the size of your problem. Project Exile is in part funded by the NRA as I recall. It has a track record of success which you can read about by googling the subject. It is something that the Democratic strongholds around the country that would benefit from the project will never go for. Can you imagine the Prewinkle allowing something like that in Cook County Courts? It will lock her constituency up in federal prison and it partners with the NRA.

From the standpoint of understanding the problem this is not a move forward, it is at best a lateral move. The person who wrote this is projecting his viewpoint onto what is euphemistically called the community. What he means is how he would feel if he were in their circumstance. That is, he would feel without "hope" because he would not be able to do anything that would satisfy his level of ambition. And rather than argue it, for brevity I will sum it up. The opinion is rubbish.
And then there is the "it's a society issue." This is shifting from dealing with the behavior to seeing it as a moral issue and apportioning blame. It is all very fine but in the short run it is the behavior that has to be dealt with. And in the long run it is still the behavior that has to be dealt with because not holding criminals to blame for their behavior gives it an element of permission on a social level, thus aggravating the situation on a social level as well.

I just came back from a remote and impoverished area of central missouri that i know very well. Lots of poverty and lots of guns.....
yet, the poor folks down there don't shoot and kill one another. they don't beg and steal from one another and they don't destroy their communities.
The progressives like to blame poverty for all of the violent crime. While, it certainly contributes to the level of violent crime, poverty has never been identified as a root cause of violent crime. There are plenty of very poor sections of this country, sections that are well armed, that do not have these high levels of robbery, shootings and homicides. And, that goes for other sections of the world. They should be honest with themselves for a change.
The saddest thing is this is something they could do TODAY if they were motivated to do such, with existing laws. Compare and contrast that to the editorial Anita wrote where a felon with a gun gets an average of 12 months, then is 4X more likely to go murder someone when out.
Culling the bad members of society gives the rest of society an opportunity to grow and do the right thing.

I represented a guy in federal court on a possession of a weapon by a felon. He originally was charged in state court and there was a 402 conference and the offer was 3 years. The guy was such an asshole that the SAO referred it to the Feds.. He got ten years. Btw, the gun was inoperable. There's a lesson there - don't be an asshole.

I saw the BBC News story and the BBC Magazine version on-line, regarding Chicago homicides. The News story was more revealing when the reporter embedded with the gangs and got their version of ghetto life. They are all armed all the time. They're scared of getting shot by the younger bucks. They hate it and want out because they know it's a fucked up to live/die. But, it's turned into a relentless cycle. As an observation, because they expect to be hunted everywhere they go, by the rival gangs, they are motoring around town, armed, and getting into engagements everywhere; suburbs, highways, theme parks, beaches, downtown, etc.... To break this cycle we must have a State of Emergency declared (for a week or two) for specific areas, with the National Guard deployed. Their mission would be vehicle checkpoints, street stops, holding fixed positions, as an augment to CPD. The goal would not be enforcement or arrests, but to shock the community; this may break the cycle enough, for the shootings to slow down. The other answer is one offered by a rapper who was interviewed, that some people need to be killed to stop all the shooting they do; In other words, attrition by public service homicide. Overall, the BBC story leaves one with a very hopeless view of being Black in Chicago, and that's the tragedy....

It is not a lack of parenting when the parent is the leader of stealing, robbing, vandalizing, extortion and murder.. I could go and on. The reason why these punks commit crime is not the problem, just arrest and prosecute them. That is the answer. When they know they will get arrested and prosecuted, crime will go down!
It seems really elitist for anyone to blame being POOR for being a common thug and criminal. There are plenty of impoverished areas in this country - can you say "Appalachia"? Or "Navajo reservation"? Yet, you don't have the wholesale feral behavior in those areas that you do in the inner cities. And it's not for lack of opportunity to commit crimes, or a lack of weaponry. So it has to be (wait for it) the criminal culture that breeds in places like Detroit or Englewood.
