Off Duty Robbed

  • Armed robbers stole a gun from an off-duty Chicago police officer Saturday night in the Lakeview neighborhood, Chicago police said.

The off-duty officer and another victim were in the 3100-block of North Ravenswood Avenue at about 9:25 p.m. when they were approached by three people armed with handguns.

The robbers, described as males in their teens or early 20s, stole the officer's .38 caliber handgun and the wallets from both victims. They fled the scene in a dark-colored SUV.
Be careful ladies and gentlemen.

I'm just glad the Officer is a live. There have been cases where they rob an officer and during the robbery realize the victim is the police and shoot them on the spot. I remember them talking about it in the academy. This stuff is going on everywhere. Stay safe.

I'm afraid that in the near future officers will be hesitant in using their weapons when faced with a deadly situations. Thank you Rahm and Eddie "the stripper" Johnson for creating this. This is what happens when you neutralized your police department. Last week you stripped officers for shooting thugs and this next week officers are being fired upon by thugs. This department is sinking. Geesh, throwing McCarthy under the bus and firing him was a great solution. The city is up for grabs.

Not quite a coin flip as to what to do. Even if you've got your finger on the trigger of the gun in your jacket pocket, do you put yourself and companion at risk when there are THREE guns pointed at you? We were always told, never give up your gun. Not armchair quarterbacking here. I don't know what I would have done.

I'm off the job for a number of years, but I can still hear those words, never ever give up your gun. We were told over and over to never give up a gun for a number of reasons. It can be use against you, another police officer, or used to kill someone else. I'm sure its still the same with coppers, most are not gun people and barely pass qualification. Its time for police officers to practice and become much more proficient with their weapons. If you are driving in a vehicle, ask yourself this question, how quick can I get to my weapon. When you are parking your vehicle in a garage, back it into the structure and give yourself an advantage if someone enters while you are parking. Sit in a restaurant or bar with you back to the wall. When stopped in traffic, leave enough space between the vehicle in front of you to maneuver out of an attack. Think about how you can use your vehicle as a weapon, running over an armed suspect, ramming another vehicle, and more. When walking in a parking lot, pretend someone is going to jump out between parked vehicles or someone in a vehicle is going to do you harm. All of the above are preparations to get your mind right in case you have to defend yourself or family. Being the police now a days, you have become the hunted. Think about a home invasion of your residence and how you would defend yourself. Beef-up your home with security as an early warning system. I'm sure there are others who can add to preparing yourself to fend off an assailant and please do.

So let me get this straight, your motto is to 'stay fetal' and then you yourselves are robbed and hunted like animals on the very streets you choose to take a passive approach to. How many more officers or family members of officers have to get robbed or shot for you to realize that you are the product of your own work, which is an idea that the residency requirement was built upon. Reevaluate your strategy and perhaps do the job you swore to do, as best you can, even considering the circumstances.

Its getting worse then we have a 10 year old case coppers being fired:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-off-duty-chicago-police-beating-met-20160904-story.html

You can read the story think closer to truth would be everyone drinking, drunk :gangbanging" thug pos comes into restaurant to start shit, coppers yell at jagoff to leave he refuses mutherf&&ks coppers, the arrest history on thug gangbanger is this and show it. You read the story and the dishonest media as usual makes the police look terrible as they always do. Then it sounds like the copper that wrote report found it "Strange" that he/she could not interview anyone before completing report.

If your a working copper please wake up, it is not getting any better at all going to the bottom of the ocean rapidly. stay fetal protect Blue let the thugs have at it, write paper stay safe leave and repeat.

Lastly was at range recently on the line we had a pistol malfunction, jam officer ddi not know how to clear it, opened it up and looked inside completely dry, rust, the clip springs were jammed, you have to cycle ammo out occasionally to let the springs open, its your weapon if could save the life of you and your family you take care of your family take care of what protects them your weapon! May God bless the police everywhere!

I'm curious if other witnesses were nearby.
If all three thugs were pointing guns at the officer, more than likely the officer would have been shot, if he attempted reaching for his own weapon.
On the other hand, if one thug held the gun, and the officer was quick, he could have taken the POS off the face of the earth.

Stay fetal, unless a thug is trying to harm you, family, friends, fellow-officers, and your partner.

And yet another "I have a bigger gun so I'm going to win."
If you read the story The P.O. did not draw because they had him so it would have been a bigger gun they got away with.
It's called situational awareness in the real world,if you carry you need to be aware what is going on around you every second, you do your best to avoid or respond to what doesn't look right.
Yes it is a pain in the a** to constantly be in a condition of readiness where you have to watch every movement going on around you and appear to the average person to be a bit paranoid but you choose to carry didn't you?
If you don't want to take the time and energy to practice, stay constantly ready and in some ways change your life style because you are armed then leave it at home.
I have seen the elephant and also trained for many years, when you start to explain this most students including Coppers don't want to hear it.
If you know your going to a gun fight..don't go, if you have no choice bring a rifle/shotgun and all your friends with rifles/shotguns.In the real world carry a handgun that is in the biggest caliber YOU can handle but is comfortable enough to be concealed on your person at all times (yes this is a conflict and you will have to give and take on both ends). Be aware and practiced.
The firearm is a tool and a head shot from a two inch .38 beats a miss or no shot from a tactical tefflon laser equipped special forces issued pistol loaded with rhino stopper hollow points.
Stop reading the internet stories written by idiots who were never there and get some proper training,go to the range often and get your head out of you a** when your out and about.
This isn't what you want to hear but it will keep you alive. God bless and be safe and aware.

In the high crime areas, you see cops every block or two. The criminals are not geniuses, but they are quick to learn how to cause problems for those that they hate. We have rules, they don't. I can't count the number of times some other race person has accused me of racism. You don't like what I did about your infraction or crime, it must be because I am a racist. You "regularly chuckled about how Chicago police would get robbed?" That's interesting, considering the fact that Chicago police are very rarely robbed. Funny you forgot to include this other department you worked for. Embarrassed? I don't think you realize that it doesn't matter if you really are a bad motherfucker. Someone can always get the drop on you, even when you're paying attention. Hopefully you're the next victim so you can show us all how it's done. You can use your x-ray vision to see through walls, your eyes in the back of your head to see behind you, and your super fast reflexes to shoot the attackers before they even know what's going on. Make sure you're walking alone though so you only get yourself hurt. After you tell us which department you worked for, I'm sure we'll all get to chuckle along with you.

Anything short of seeing these assholes walking down the street with guns in their hands is an illegal stop. Even then, you get into a shootout with them, and you're on trial for murder with no job. You're blaming the police for the actions of criminals. Typical liberal point of view. We didn't choose a passive approach. It was forced upon us. As for the residency requirement, it may have started as a way to get the police to have the investment in the neighborhood so that they were more motivated to police more effectively and aggressively. However, it is now nothing more than a way to force the police to keep paying taxes to the city, because the vast majority of us would be in the suburbs tomorrow if the residency requirement was lifted. It's all about money now. If you're looking for someone to blame for the "fetal" movement, start with the president, Eric Holder, Rahm, the ACLU, Anita Alvarez, Preckwinkle, the "community activists," father Faker, Eddie Johnson, Garry Mccarthy, the media, and all the liberal morons perpetuating the BLM "movement" and the "racist police" false narrative. We're doing the job we swore to do, as best we can, considering the circumstances. Unfortunately for everyone, that means doing the bare minimum and stopping as few people as possible. If you think you can do better without ending up dead, unemployed, imprisoned, or sued, by all means sign on up and join us out there. Didn't think so. You can keep your advice about how to do a job you're too afraid to do yourself, and we'll do our best to protect your dumb ass, despite your lack of appreciation and awareness. In closing, criminals are responsible for crime, dumbfuck. Stay safe!

This is it in a nutshell. I had that line beat into my skull at the Police Academy I went to in the 90's at a different department

I know Some other Large departments do shooting competitions and the annual Champ gets a cheap plaque and a paper certificate and bragging rights for the next year.

I hope the only reason the ODPO gave it up was because the other person with them Wasn't armed.

Staying fetal on the job is for our own protection from prosecution and suits. You, if your not the police have caused this staying fetal by going alone with BLM and the progressives you support. Having some punks jumping out of a vehicle and robbing you has nothing to do with staying fetal while working. The punks should have been shot and killed, however, you are confusing the issue. I walk around this City armed and ready and will never give up my gun to anyone. Hey asshole, walk a mile in our shoes first before making some bullshit judgement.

Truly a nightmare situation!
Canot/willnot second guess this situation!
Seems to me the outcome was positive given
The odds, but I certainly dont have the details.

My personal situational awareness is hyper, so an SUV slow rolling close to me would
have personally forced my hand on steel (mostly plastic in my case).

If I was able to identify anyone coming at me armed, at least at "some" distance, there is
A really good chance I would have gotten the leader!

The rest scatter into the dark, the vehicle speeds off...
But that is just me. Ive never had three come at me, only
One at a time, and every time Ive gotten out of the
situation unscathed, gun in hand, and never had to shoot!

Arm chair quarterback? Yea, probably. Preparedness, 12,000 rounds
down range annually, that helps!

Every police involved shooting I can find on the web?

Don't hurt!!

Please watch out for one another, stay safe, go home,
And know that a shit ton of motherfuckers like
me belive blue lives matter and will always have
your 6.

Just sayin..

For our younger colleagues, take the time to either read the book or see the movie "The Onion Field" written by former LAPD Sgt. Joe Wambaugh. Based on a real incident which shows the horror of being disarmed & losing your partner. And the typical bureaucratic response by the brass, IAD,the courts, the press, and correctional system.
If you are working a 2 man unit, it will provide some crucial conversation. If you work solo, you'll want to confer with your colleagues on your shift. If you like bag pipe music, it will bring a tear to the eye.

assumption is the mother of all bullshit, never assume, personally being a trained martial artist 5th degree black belt vs weapon in ready position 3 attackers, tough situation. Don't forget the officer had someone with him another life to think about,I would of removed my wallet nervously and said here it is yours, and threw if to the side, at that point human reaction could be they go after wallet, and you have a chance to draw as long as they are turned, your weapon is ready,1 in chamber and you know your weapon is clean and will work possibly you have a shot.

Now not quarterbacking was not there, but the officer is safe, his friend is safe unharmed ego bruised but both went home safe. this situation takes courage to decide "what would you do" the officer was correct. To the cowboys here be careful what you say you could be the next contestant on the game show "I was robbed in chiraq!"

I remember that shootout. The cooper was in his watering hole and before he started having a few drinks, gives his snub to the bartender for safe keeping. The bartender knows the copper and if drunk holds the gun for him like someone would keep your keys so you wouldn't drive while drunk. It was a ritual they've been doing for awhile. So when the robbers came into the bar he didn't have his gun on this person. The bartender during the holdup slipped him the gun and the copper took action killing the motherfuckers. And he did it with a 38 special snub. Not all, but the computer police are very worry some of late. Putting yourself in a position and giving up your gun to some punks is very troubling to me and many others.

Guess what dumbazz? The CPD is doing exactly what it's supposed to do. There have been many court rulings(ie precedent) that PO have no special duty to put themselves at risk before the fact to prevent a crime or protect any person not under immediate threat, and not even then if there might be a larger risk to greater society. The CPD, in being "fetal", as they say, or "passive", as you say, are doing exactly what they're required to do, no more, no less. And guess what else? That's exactly what the people (and folks) have said, in no uncertain terms, that they want. That's what they're getting. The people (and folks) are getting exactly what they screamed for, loud and long. I think a lot of you don't even really give a good damn how the police operate, no matter what they do, you just like using them as a convenient whipping boy for deflecting from your own eternal dysfunction. Because no matter what they do and how they do it, you bitch about it. The so-called "silent majority" who may support the CPD are just as bad, for remaining silent. Silent, unseen and unfelt support is as good as no support at all, to the pandering politicians.

On the night of March 9, 1963, LAPD officers Ian Campbell (age 31) and Karl Hettinger (age 28), both former Marines, were riding in an unmarked "felony" car. They pulled over a 1946 Ford coupe containing two suspicious-looking men at the corner of Carlos Avenue and Gower Street in Hollywood.[2][3] The two men, Gregory Ulas Powell (age 30) and Jimmy Lee Smith (a.k.a. "Jimmy Youngblood", age 32), had recently committed a string of robberies, and "each had a pistol tucked into his trousers."[2] Powell, the driver, pulled a gun on Campbell, who "calmly told his partner, 'He has a gun in my back. Give him your gun.'" The two officers were then forced into Powell's car and, within 30 seconds after the traffic stop began, were driven north from Los Angeles on Route 99, to an onion field near Bakersfield, where Campbell was fatally shot.[2] Hettinger was able to escape, running nearly four miles to reach a farmhouse.[3]

I also leave my seatbelt on because I realize I'm much more likely to be in a crash than a shootout. What is it that makes you think you'll need your gun within one block of your house more than you'll need it anywhere else? The closer I get to home, the safer I feel. Do you live in the ghetto or is this just part of your irrational, possibly delusional thought process? People are getting shot on the expressways. Maybe you should unbuckle on the expressway and roll up your pants while driving. Makes about as much sense as the rest of your idiotic ideas. You morons think you're tactical geniuses or something. Are you the "bend the robber's fingers back" guy? Maybe you're the "civilian shootist" who can figure out if someone is left-handed and that they're using a .40 cal Glock based on holes in a windshield that you saw on the news. I agree with both, but if you are that close to me and trying to get my gun and I have a knife, you my friend are dead before your able to pull the trigger. A point, in the 12th dist. on 18th st. , during a fight over a pool game, four Mex were killed by a guy with a knife. The four were armed with handguns, granted the dude with the knife took a round in the hip and survived. During the investigation it was noted, everyone in this fight were right on top of each other. ---------------------------------------------------------------------

A few points:

My guess is that the victims 1) didn't have their guns drawn when the offender attacked, and 2) he took them by surprise, i.e. they were all getting in his face and he started stabbing.

That's a different situation than 4 guys targeting you and approaching you with weapons drawn. In that situation, a knife-wielding attacker would almost surely be killed and you'd be lucky to kill any of them. Context is important.

To that point, the 21 foot rule is that a young male can cover that distance in 1.5 seconds. The reason this is important is that most gunman can't unholster and fire in that time. So, the message is to have your weapon ready. In tests, if the gunman has his weapon at the ready the knifeman is generally shot down and cannot harm the gunman.

I was the second car on the scene that night and we found four Mex stabbed to death. There were at least ten shots fired in the bar during that fight. The guy with the knife was shot and another patron took a round in the back as he was fleeing. The Mex with the knife was a butcher at a local grocery store located near ashland and 18th. The knife he used was a boning knife he used at work. I don't know a lot about knife fighting, but that guy cut the fuck out of those four who had guns and lived to talk about it.

Hey point boy, I don't know were the fuck you work but in the 12th dist when that occurred the call was muti shots fired in that bar. There were at least 8-10 shots with four dead due to being stabbed and two shot. One of the shot victims was allegedly running for the door and the guy with the knife was shot once or a couple of times. This type of thing with a knife and a gun happens a lot in the 12th dist. If I was keep score, I'd say knife wins half the time and gun the other half. And point boy, if you ever have a person with a knife close to you, my advise run; that's right, run and make some distance between you and that knife. But WTF do I know point boy. If you try to pull a gun in close with someone welding a knife, your the biggest fool on this planet or you have a major death wish.

Worked the 11th dist for ten years, and eight years in 10. In those years like a lot of other police officer, I've seen a lot. Believe me, the experience of working those two districts is an education in the total lack of humanity of the people living in those communities. Reading 12:46 PM reminded me of the movie Unforgiven. After the bar shootout the writer asked Clint Eastwood who he shot first. Because he said, you always go for the most experience gunfighter. Clint told this guy he was always lucky in the order of shooting and killing folks. Your WILL to live is the key and the knowledge to use anything at hand to survive comes with a mind set to do it without hesitation. To the Point Boy 12:46, if I have a pencil in my hand and you try to draw your gun when I'm at arms reach, I will kill you by running that pencil through your eye and into the brain. I hope you got the point.

The stupidity has gotten out of control in this one. Looks like it's mostly one guy though. Settle down, little fella. Calling people point boy isn't the insult you think it is. You sound like a 5 year old.

Wasn't there, but I still wouldn't go down without a fight. Once your gun and badge is taken, you should assume they are going to execute you. Might as well put up a fight at that point.

that assumption was proven wrong

Just read there was an arrest in the police giving up his gun during a robbery. The story, he and his wife were walking down the street to get ice cream. A vehicle loaded with teen blacks looked him up and down and stop. The doors fly open and three or four teenagers get out and cover some ground to get to the officers location. The teens put a gun to his wife head and another teen puts a gun to the officers stomach. The teen arrested said he took the gun from the officer because they did want to get shot. Reading the report tells me this officer was not paying attention to his surroundings. A vehicle loaded with black teens eying you up and down would have put a normal person on alert. The vehicle stopping near you and doors opening with a group jumping out should have given you time to react due to the distance. I'm glad he and his wife are alright, but being armed and not paying attention is a recipe too getting you ass killed.

The fact that you mention talking about it at roll call as some sort of validation for your opinion tells me everything I need to know about how dumb you are. Your atrocious spelling and grammar are the icing on the cake. We know one thing from this incident: The cop gave up his gun, and he and his companion lived. That's really all there is to it. If he had chosen to shoot it out with these assholes, they could both be dead. If you are facing 3 guns, you're with your significant other, and you have a .380, the probability one or both of you gets shot and/or killed trying to play Billy Badass is pretty damn high. Sometimes giving up your gun is the smart/safe play AS WAS PROVEN IN THIS CASE. Any other Monday morning quarterback shit you idiots want to present is just worthless. I hope this never happens to you, so we don't have to go to your funeral when you pretend you're invincible supercop. YOU CAN'T SHOOT 3 PEOPLE AT THE SAME TIME. You damn sure can't win a 1 vs. 3 firefight with the capacity and caliber of a piddly ass .380. You can't just bend all their fingers back and flash your badge. You, and all your little friends at roll call, are fucking assholes and morons. I know you'll tell us that your super cool sergeant even agreed with you when you discussed it at roll call. That also means nothing.

Excuse me, if I may get into this conversation with Mr. grammar 5:41. You made an interesting assumption, "YOU CAN'T SHOOT 3 PEOPLE AT THE SAME TIME." This is true if you define at the same time as being impossible. Now, if you were trying to articulate from that statement, you can't shoot it out with three people; then you Sir are wrong. There has been Police Officer gunfights were multiple offenders were involved and the officer survived. Sir, a lot of us take range time very seriously and practice on more then one target. We play a game when we are able to get range time. Targets are placed at different distances and one of the targets is marked with a bullseye. The bullseye represents a bad guy with a shotgun. You have to shot the guy with the shotgun first and the others in any order you feel will give you the best time. In a life and death situation similar to the officer who gave up his gun, I and others believe there should be one or more robbers shot. I noticed you keep referring to the officers weapon as a .380 type weapon. If I may correct you he was packing a 38cal weapon on that not so auspicious night. You also appear to be defending this officer, so you are either a friend of this officer or just another empty holster. Lastly, you may know more information then most of us about this incident, however, the gun being 380 or 38cal would not make a difference if you are proficient in its' use.

I'll be a witness here: 5:41 appears to be the typical do nothing copper who can't shoot his gun without any proficiently. He's the one that tells other younger police officers, if you use your weapon you will be fired or you're going to jail. Like someone on this blog stated, selfdefense trumps everything. You can see what this guy is all about, atrocious spelling and grammar village idiot. That's a sign of an old inside asshole connected to a political boss and concerned about grammar instead of real police work. Come out of you're hiding spot and feel our pain you whining jagoff. Oh, I will never give up my gun without resistance.

Just another witness:

There was always three things a police officer was best at doing. He was good at sex, the best high speed pursuit driver, and best combat shooter. This guy keeps talking about it is impossible to shoot it out with three stick-up guys. The statement tells me this guy has no confidence in his weapon. The question someone should pose to 5:41, how fast can you shot three armed teens that are five feet and one of them almost on top of you. The answer 5:41, three seconds or less. I believe the guy who had his weapon taken, had no clue what to do. And I'm sure, he like a lot of other police officers never think about a situations where they might have to use their weapon. There I feel better now, thank you.

The stupidity continues, but he's pretending to be three different people now. Read what I posted instead of attempting to interpret it as something else. You're not smart enough to read into it or analyze it in any way. So, just read the words I posted and take them literally. Better yet, have someone who isn't a complete moron read the posts to you and explain them. I honestly hope you get put in the exact situation this officer was put in, and I hope you try it your way. I didn't feel that way before, but your stupidity and arrogance have made me change my mind. As for your assumptions about me, they're all wrong. You're no psychic, sir. Your psychic abilities are about on par with your reading comprehension and tactical awareness. Get a few of your friends together with some paintball guns and play out this scenario exactly as it happened. See how many rounds you and your significant other take before it's over. I guarantee you it will be more than the ones the officer in the actual incident took, which was ZERO! The way he handled it had the best possible outcome for the innocents involved. You simply can't argue against that. Well, you can, because you lack a logical thought process, and the ability to comprehend what you read, but a rational person with common sense can't argue against it. I anxiously await your three responses to this so that you can keep pretending to be more than one person.
