Wellness Not Healthy

The FOP fought long and hard to be pretty much the sole holdout on Rahm's "Wellness" program. We don't recall all the circumstances or details, but it involved so-called "health coaching" and phone calls and such. It was supposed to save the city millions by encouraging a more fit and healthy workforce. It was more likely an Obamacare offshoot, designed to enrich connected individuals and companies.

Word has filtered out from a couple other unions who like to write to us that the city is canceling the Wellness program next contract because it didn't actually do any of the things promised and certainly didn't save any money. If true, a hat tip to the FOP for keeping everyone the hell out of this disaster-in-progress.

Be prepared to pay a price at the table next year for being right. Rahm doesn't like being wrong.

If Rahm was smart (snicer, snicker), he would just ignore the whole issue.
So expect him at his passive aggressive worst.

I wish as much attention would be given to the pension crisis or other more important issues besides this wellness plan. Other then 1 phone call every 4 months that was all you had to do. During the call they would offer you some advice about living healthier. Focus on important issues at contract time not a non issue like this one.

Rahm's brother is a medical doctor who advised on Obamacare, and is an expert on wellness.

It would have been a big waste on the CPD too. There are some very unhealthy cops that smoke all day, only drink pop or coffee never water, eat burgers and burritos every day and can barely walk up the stairs. This program wouldn't have done a thing for them. They have to make major lifestyle changes themselves and fast. This is a difficult job to maintain a strict healthy lifestyle. Someone calling you once a month isn't going to do a damm thing

We were kept out of wellness because the Fop fought against it in a prior arbitration. The arbitrator ruled that the city couldn't force us into that bullshit. It was nothing Deano did. As a matter of fact Dean gave away Northwestern and Advocate hospitals starting in Jan 2017. Read your contract ladies and gentlemen. Going to cost you a lot more starting in Jan.

It's such a joke. Far as I can tell, and my family is in it, they threaten to charge each individual who doesn't participate with a $50 fine (100 per couple). Participation is: getting a very basic health screenjng, Blood pressure, cholesterol, bmi, etc, you also have to earn points performing different actions on a website. What actions? Well, all I ever do is make "journal" entries of a letter or 2 each.

Stupid...

I questioned the background of the "coach" who was advising me of my health. No, not a RN, LPN or nutritionist, but a finance major. Just reading off a script. What a bunch of crap. I can get my own health tips off the Internet or a magazine. I would like to know who owns this company or has stakes I it, I'm betting a cronie of Rahmmor his brother. How much did they contribute to his campaign?

Just axin

Its been a disaster for Fire who were stupid enough to include it in their contract out of greed. Even stupider because they opened the door to separate contracts from the "me to" days. Basically its some Jezebel trying to get you to say your "sad" more then 3 times a week so they can bench you and hopefully get rid of you. Same thing with all the tests.

Even worse they expected the program to pay for itself due to the ones paying fines for forgetting to do it on computer. I had some bitch call me once asking me if I wanted to participate on the phone on a volunteer basis. ON THE PHONE with a total fucking stranger! When I told her "no" she told me in a real snotty voice "well your all gonna HAVE TO after your next contract".

Unbelievable the attitude on this MF'er.

I'm a CFD firefighter who gets the "coaching" calls. I always tell them that the main reasons for my health problems is the stress form poor management, corrupt promotions and bad working conditions at the firehouse.

Maybe that's getting back to someone, but I doubt it.

Wellness? It has to be a mindset and education can help. When I worked in 006 I brought a salad to work for lunch or some homemade soup to reheat. The desk crew ate jerk chicken or ribs everyday as they sat around. I recall the corned beef truck making a stop once a week. You can't keep eating like that and expect a long healthy life. No smoking, eat somewhat healthy, get some exercise 2-3 times a week . The exercise will help reduce your stress level. Way too many of my friends passed away before they were 65. It will catch up with you. I can tell you the police job is probably the most unhealthy job a person can take, mentally, physically and emotionally.

wellness programs have proven track record of having positive impact on employees (not all of them- just those who take help to hear if needed)....EXCEPT when done in the typical half ass city way which was a waste of time and money

I go to my doctor for check-ups, I don't need or want "play doctors" who are obviously kicking back to elected to keep this easy dream contract advising me. If you don't know you have to eat correctly, work out, as Hulk Hogan says "take your vitamins" watch your blood pressure no 1 can tell you anymore! Stay healthy collect at least as many pension checks as you did paychecks, saying that to say this. paychecks are twice a month pension checks are once a month collect the same amount.

Speaking of healthcare......how are the negotiations with the great hospitals in the area going? You promised to negotiate to get the Advocate systems and Northwestern in the tier 1 Mr. Angelo......we are two months away from open enrollment. Remember folks, we have a big change in the contract with healthcare in 2017. Don't get blindsided!!!!

Rahm we will do what we need to do. You can keep pandering to the know nothing about policing crowd. The real police will survive. We ain't afraid.

How's those ISR's working out?

You are 110% correct. Watching some fellow officers fat, drunk, and stupid:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkoPq5AOCOA

Not a cruel comment but reality, how about coppers doing the "rooster" both hands inside vest as they spread their wings, or the hands in pocket talking to thug copper! get in shape, eat correctly, was at Christ the other day getting stress test all OK, was told that 1 hour before me a cpd copper was in there had a heart attack, but should be OK. You want to retire with health, because plain and simple "health is #1 priority" without it you fade and fade quickly! If your working with a partner that eats and looks unhealthy he/she may get mad but at least try to advise them. What is it with so many female officers getting "saddle ass" come on the job is stressful enough take care of yourself!!

You guys are lucky if the rumor is true. I work for one of the departments that were stuck with it. I can tell you hardly anyone did anything to improve themselves. I watched people answer all the computer crap for others. I refused to participate, they took my 50.00 a month. I don't need anyone contradicting what my docs say. Our union holds a health fair, that was good enough to get our labs done at technically no cost to us. It was a huge mistake. This company had been sued over and over violating hippa laws. Kudos to you guys. Stay safe out there!!!

Regarding your insurance with the hospitals it's a whole city issue with the down grading of hospitals and doctors. I lost all my docs out of northwestern I've been going to for 25 plus years. You guys will end up in the tier system. The best hospitals and docs you have to pay up front ( at the docs office) for the whole bill and then you submit to your insurance. Per one of my docs he was telling me Bc/bs is making a deal with advocate hospitals so hopefully they will start accepting our insurance. The blue cross blue options you loose most of your docs do pay attention when you get your benefit package otherwise you are in for an eye opener.

I remember a time when your health was your problem not your employers.

Yet someone is stealing cash again a company that calls you and give your very basic test.

No free gym membership
No discount in delivered health foods
No discount on gym equipment
NO discount on vitamins
No time given while working to use the gyms at HQ (i KNOW!!! only clouted)

Great health plan...

Get on a Bike.

Ride a Bike 7 hours a day for patrol.
Duck into Building for 1 and a Half Hours a Shift for breaks and lunch.

Record 7 hours of High Intensity bike riding : 420 minutes or so.

Do it 12 times a quarter. 1 phone call a year, and a blood test.

Thats what we are doing at Finance to help stick the city with no added$$$ for our benefits coverage.

Or heres a Little Secret.

Take an Unpaid Day off. The System isn't set up to recognize lost time from your payroll and you are bumped out until the next year. Then they have to eat it and you don't got to worry about it.

I have been battling cancer for over twenty years. I had several surgeries and biopsys. The type of cancer I have can best be detected with an MRI. The people at telegin said that I had too many MRIs. The Heath coaches called and said that they can help with my health. I asked them if they can find a cure for cancer and they said that they could if I sign up with them. Before I hung up, I told them that even the expert doctors that have been keeping me from taking a dirt nap aren't sure what caused my cancer.
