Houston Death

An officer drowned trying to get to work in order to assist the citizens of his ravaged city:
  • Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner on Tuesday confirmed the death of a police officer Sunday when he was trapped in flooded patrol car.

The Houston Chronicle has reported that Sgt. Steve Perez, 30, was heading to work Sunday when he became trapped in high water on Interstate 45 in north Harris County and then couldn’t get himself out of his car.
We have no idea the amount of pain and exhaustion that must be the constant companion to not only the first responders, but all he citizens affected by the hurricane. May they remain in everyone's thoughts and prayers.

He was 60 years of age, just days shy of his 61st birthday, with 30+ years on the HPD.

Very sad and just a minor correction: He was going to be 61. He had 30 years on the force.

Houston/ Harvey is humbling many people down there.

It would be nice if in all that tragedy, everyone in DIFFERENT cities would start to see and appreciate what goes on in police departments (and fire departments) faced with difficult challenges, sometimes almost impossible ones.

Leadership in Chicago must also look at this and ask itself, how would we react? Really, how WOULD Chicago react to a huge crisis?

We have seen Boston Strong. Texas Strong. What would Chicago be in a big crisis?

Chicago Feeble?

Chicago Clouted? (only certain people/ neighborhoods getting rescue boats and shelter- while others "just wait" - like the cleaning of snow off streets?)

Or, as some like to approach many issues here - Chicago Fetal?

Think about that.

I think many, in their hearts, would step up. (at least the rank-and-file, probably not the Command (too much clout-laden doofuses)

I hope I am right about the majority. 30-40 years ago, I KNOW I would be right about 100% stepping up.

Today? I just don't see it.

Or, has this toxic environment burnt out so many that most would retreat to their "summer homes" in WI, MI, and IN and just say, "Hey,I got mine."??

Mayor said there was no reason to evacuate any of Houston.
I knew since Last Wednesday that Houston was going to get 30-40" of rain.
Meteorologists were predicting that rain. Not a Hurricane, just a shitload of RAIN.
About a quarter of Houston floods every time they get 12" of rain, like they did TWICE last year.
Like they flooded a dozen times since 2000.
But the "local experts" saw no reason to evacuate any of those areas.
Not the entire fucking city, just evacuate the areas that flood.
Most of them could evacuate to high ground INSIDE Houston.

Surprise! Surprise! Houston actually got 40-50" of rain.
Now it is flooding, and people are trapped.
And the Police, Fire Department, and ordinary citizens are out there trying to save these poor, trapped people.
Trapped in neighborhoods that flooded twice last year, and trapped in neighborhoods that don't normally flood too.
And people are dying, even the police.

Why didn't the Democrat Mayor want to evacuate any of the city?
The Republican Governor recommended evacuation.
Pawns. The citizens of Houston were pawns.
Pawns in a Political Pissing Match.

Think Rahm an Rauner will be any better?

Hopefully it will stop raining tomorrow.

Five Days of Rain. Not five hours, five DAYS.

A third of Houston and the surrounding counties has been destroyed.

Pray for the People of Texas.

Prayers to all of Texas and Louisiana; and to all our Brothers and Sisters bravely serving the People. Though, part of me is waiting to see who gets stuck with the 'paper,' and who has to fill out all the 'NIMS 211's.' But, on a serious note, what is the Illinois and Chicago contribution? The lesson learned here is; if you want to 'mess' with Texas, you better be a never-seen-before giant Hurricane, or Texas will put the 'mess' on you!

Condolences to the sergeants family and loved ones......a dedicated officer, with many years on the job, still rushing in to his beloved city
to help out wherever he could, putting his life on the line, leaving his own family behind to fend for themselves, because THAT WAS HIS JOB......
That is what real police officers DO.....

I find it so very disheartening to see this state and city doing NOTHING, sending NO ONE to help out in Texas......we are surrounded by states that have all sent help, supplies, manpower, fire crews, electric crews, etc etc.....and I can not help but wonder how this state would survive in the event of a major catastrophe......our elected officials have no clue how to run a state, or a city, or a county......in GOOD times, let alone in the midst of a tragedy......sad, sad, sad, and scary beyond belief.......

Dedicated his life to serving the people of Houston for over 30 years.
I hope the folks never that the democrat mayor of Houston refused to call for an evacuation and people who lagged behind were trapped by the floods requiring even more emergency assistance than the HPD could prepare for.

Not much time for blame yet?
The mayor only had reassurance to the illegal immigrants that they will not be deported due to the flooding.

The twisted, immoral Fake News and various other liberal outlets spent more time pointing out what shoes the First Lady was wearing than honoring all the relief efforts by First Responders.

Hope the free ride is over soon for the welfare stoop sitting never employed drunks and junkies.
Yes, people are feed up and the shit is coming to roost. People are tired working two jobs while the stoop sitter' cry for more freebie's. Hope Trump cuts every social program ever enacted for slugs.
Rahm and that hole Madigan wants a federal judge to monitor CPD, LOL. The fed' need the bureau guys to hit city hall and cook county offices to dig up where billions had been stolen for decades. Rahm can teach dance moves in a Max federal joint.
The country was blessed with the election of Trump.

Even sadder your Arizona Brethren in Blue stop these Mexican American Officers and question their immigration status.

Before you call bullshit, my Mexican American Brother in law was stopped in AZ last year for no other reason than his skin color.
Once he identified himself as a LEO the backpedalling sorry we're just doing our job shit began. So save it.

Your had me in the beginning, but you're doing the same thing the liberals are doing. I work in an all black district, but if I stop a couple of blacks, I'm racial profiling. Let's take this to another level, what if coming across the border were white Russians illegals. So now I'm looking for illegals who are white and stopping whites in my search for illegals. Then an American Russian law enforcement officers is stopped and they apologize or like you sad start backpedalling and saying they were just doing their job shit. I'm using your words, but most of the time when I use this example, its shot down as being somehow racist thinking. I guest if your white it's OK to stop those bad white people without any racial profiling label being applied. My wife is Mex, and she was stopped in AZ, but she thanked the Border Patrol for keeping this Country safe from all the invaders.

I'm fifth generation Mexican American, Dad and Uncles fought in World War Two and I would not in the least be offended by AZ officers stopping me. I can understand, its the nature of the problem looking for illegals and being questioned. It's not offensive to me, and you my friend are demonstrating an ethnicity chip on your shoulder. If I had to do the Border Patrol job I would be stopping Hispanics, and inquiring about their status. It's extremely important to have secure borders, and almost any argument against it makes you look like a fool. Our security is number one, and if your relative had his/her feelings hurt, so be it. I'm a proud Mexican American and all of family are also. I hear it all the time, Mexicans wanting the US to be just like a second Mexico. That's right, I'll tell you all, that's part of their plan; behind all of this BS about racial profiling, is to take over the US with their kind of folks. So who is the racist, I love this Country and would fight to prevent a second Mexico with speaking Spanish as being part of the takeover plot. God Bless America and the President

The way Chicago and Illinois respond( or don't respond) to help is disheartening. But private organization s are helping, and I donate and help them as much as I can I think it's all up to the people to help. They will need help for a long time to come. If you go, bring some gas, during Katrina, to ere we're issues with gas. Also bring plenty of water and other rsupllies.
