Lieutenant Escapes Injury
- Someone shot at an off-duty Chicago Police lieutenant on the Near West Side on Sunday night.
Eddie Winters, a veteran police lieutenant and former state representative, was in his car near Hoyne Avenue and Madison Street about 8 p.m. Sunday when someone fired 23 shots at him, according to Ald. Walter Burnett Jr. (27th) and police. Officers said Winters' vehicle was damaged in the attack, but no one was injured.
The shooting happened near the Chicago Public Library's Manning branch and just two blocks west of the United Center, 1901 W. Madison St.
Twenty-three shots is either an extended magazine type weapon or multiple weapons. An arrest was quickly made, but.....
- Police responding to a call of "shots fired" chased accused gunman Bruce Burns, 25, to his home in the 1800 block of West Monroe Street, where he was arrested about 8:15 p.m., according to police and prosecutors.
When police found a loaded .38 caliber handgun with six live rounds during a patdown, records show, Burns reportedly said, "I have a gun, but you know how it is. It's dangerous out here. I'm not on no bulls---. I'm just a regular guy."
A fully loaded revolver? We're guessing this might not be your primary suspect. In the meantime, the lieutenat is getting a lot of praise from the community as a stand-up citizen and a go-to guy. Hopefully, he wasn't targeted as some have suggested. That would be very bad on many levels.

I am glad this "Lt" was not injured (if it actually happen like he said) I would never wish such a horrible event on anybody.

Funny thing is no copper I have talked to believes this version of events-many unanswered questions. I find it concerning.
The community says he is a great guy, he reflects the community. Double merit, family and friends who can only be described as people and folks. Career house mouse, I don't think he ever made any arrests. Always inside, always had the community drop his name when we were interacting positively with certain corners or tips. The typical boss now in cpd.
That building is filled with nothing but s**the ads. It should be torn down and everyone shipped elsewhere.

I have worked for Winters and if you take the time to listen to him, he is extremely intelligent. It must be hard to earn your rank and because of the color of your skin have people automatically assume you cheated on a test. Sorry but he is slow to speak because he measures the weight of his words. I worked for him for a year with an open mind and no pre judgement and learned a few things. Im glad your okay Lt. Stay safe.

When was last time you drove through the area around the United Center? It's far from a shit hole. The condos are expensive as hell. Oh let me guess, you're clueless. Well, I'm glad the Lt. wasn't injured.

If I generalized like you, and the ACLU, I would classify all cops as racist killers, but I know it's not true. 65% of the bosses are NOT black. Just query CLEAR. And yes, I passed 3. Detective, Sgt., and Lt. It does not mean anything because there are merit guys of all races that were better cops than me. I did sacrifice and it paid off. You could be promoted too if you properly directed your anger.

Because Burnett is his whack. And as far as the poster that says he speaks slowly because he weighs his words? Get off his nutz. The REAL police know what time it is. I hope they catch the shooters only so we can find out who the chick in the car with him was and the REAL story when the offenders start tricking on one another. Hint: the REAL police know what's what. You just keep telling yourself he's a good guy that earned his spot.

Exactly, bash Merit if you like but take a good look around these days; some merit work harder then some of those who scored. You wouldn't know they were Merit unless you were told. Then there are some that slip through the cracks.
