Officer Domagala Passes

Twenty-nine years is a long time:
  • The City of Chicago has lost a true hero. It is with a heavy heart that we report that Officer Bernie Domagala passed away after suffering for twenty-nine years from the devastating injuries he sustained when shot while he was on duty on July 14, 1988. Bernie was the father of three boys, Erik, Craig and Adam, and husband to Denise. Despite the many challenges his life held for him since being injured, he never lost his love for the two most important things in his life: his family and the Chicago Police Department.

Born and raised in Chicago, it was always Bernie’s professional dream to become a Chicago Police officer. Six years after taking the test, his dream came true, and in 1981 he proudly became PO Bernard W. Domagala, Star #8996. It was one of the two most important things in his life. The other was his family. He loved his job as he knew he would, and always said “every day is something different, a new challenge.” While on the job two challenges he enjoyed were being assigned to the Gang Crimes South Unit and becoming a member of the Hostage, Barricade, and Terrorist Unit (HBT).

Shortly before his shift was over on the afternoon of July 14th 1988, Bernie responded to a hostage situation at 7237 S. Stony Island Avenue. Officers surrounded the property, and Bernie had taken a defensive position at the corner of the garage. He looked around the corner at the house, and in that split second the offender shot his gun hitting Bernie above his eye in the forehead. He was transported to Michael Reese Hospital where he underwent 6 hours of surgery to remove a bullet from his brain. Bernie was 37 years old at the time, with a young family of three sons
RIP Officer.

UPDATE: St Jude's is at 1930 hours, not 1900 as has been posted elsewhere. We have this directly from the Chaplains themselves, so make a note please.

RIP Officer Domagala
- A very well written and deserved tribute to Officer Domagala's brave actions, that began with a very bad day.
If I remember correctly it began with the offender shooting a C.C. Sheriff serving a court action, then turning into a HBT incident. Bernie was shot by the offender from inside the house through a darkened glass storm door from about 50 feet away as Bernie was securing the perimeter in the alley while taking cover adjacent to the offender's garage.
Luckily we had EMT's on standby in advance a block away. EMT's did a commendable job while under fire without hesitation.
No worse feeling than helping to drag one of your own onto a stretcher.
Upon later entry, offender found to have several improvised explosive devices, and also fired at other officers in the alley during the incident.
My prayers to Officer Domagala's family and friends who were at his side for many years.

RIP, officer. Michael Reese Hosp was at that time the finest trauma center in the city. He certainly received the most expert care from the staff there.

Bernie was great guy, I was assigned to Gangs North at the time and was a member of the HBT team and responded to that job.we didn't have all the safety gear the SWAT teams have now and Bernie did nothing wrong just a wacked out guy and that's all it took. Bernie fought long and hard, had many complications and died a hero. We should all pay our respects to him in some way. My heart goes out to his family. A retired ranger.

Offender was a whacked out Vet (Tommy lee ?) who the neighbors said would come out at midnight, stand naked in the back yard and shoot a gun at the moon. He was evicted by V.A. and he tore the boards down and moved back in. The V.A. got another eviction order and the information of "armed, nuts and combative" was not passed on to the Sheriffs office. A one man eviction unit ( SOP back then) arrived and offender fired a shotgun thru the front door hitting one of the civilian movers. It turned in to an all day HBT incident and at one point the offender fired a .36 caliber black powder pistol while standing in the kitchen,it traveled through the window across the back yard and hit Domagala who was standing in the alley taking a quick peek from the neighbors garage.Shortly after Kennedy from HBT ordered gas to be fired in to the house and the asshole surrendered by exiting the front door with a white pair of boxer shorts tied to a broom stick. The Sheriffs Deputy at the eviction was John Knight who went to Chicago PD and was shot and killed in the line of duty a few years later on a stop in 022.John Knight was never the same after the incident and was always friendly but had that thousand yard stare whenever I saw him.Bad memories of a hot summer day 30 years ago when we were young and it was all in front of us.I will always remember the incident and both of you. Rest in peace my Brothers.

I am quite surprised of Eddie Burke, he was always a person who silently took care of copper.'. Rahm, The Almighty has a special place for parasite's !
Richie Daley will still sent a nice check to the family.

Bernie was one of the good guys. He always had a smile on his face and always had a good word to say. I meet his wife Denise, volunteering for the Police Memorial Foundation. We worked many events together. What a Classy Lady. She would volunteer to work events for the Foundation as her way of paying back for the help and support the Foundation gave her and her family. To Denise, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. May Bernie's soul and all the souls of all of the fallen Police Officers rest in peace Amen.
