So the Department is cutting back on summer furloughs?
- OT- Annual watch furlough order is usually issued by now but delay is because: Furlough picks will be 8.75% (1,2,3,4,5,11,12 and 13th periods) and 6% (6,7,8,9,10).
Under these percentages, a lot of people who had summer furloughs aren't getting them any more. This will be sure to raise morale!

So let me get this straight. I get a sat/Sun off together about every 7th week. I never get 3 day weekends unless Im allowed to burn a day. Even if I am lucky enough for memorial day/4th of July/labor day to fall on my rdo, they will likely be cancelled. Now it will be much more difficult to get a summer furlo.
So much for having a personal life.
When I came on we had two 3 day weekends back to back and getting time due was no problem. I can't imagine being a young person coming on the job today, you might as well join the army.
Won't the additional 1000 officer even that out? Having more officers with less seniority will allow senior officer to keep same furloughs as last year

Thanks, CPD, so instead of the projected 7% on Furlough during the Summer, we will have another 15%-20% on Medical or IOD. This will bring the entire force down around 30% every day. Good Luck getting any CU this summer.
This should be met with a bunch of activity. Each car on all shifts should produce numbers, but only on their exempt's first day of furlough, then maybe every third day after that. Parkers outside of the aldershit's office, anything outside of the rev's money making schemes, anything that would have everybody "in the know" or have access, to call that department issued crackberry to register outrage. Either the calls go unanswered, and enrage the privileged ones, or the exempt has zero vacation while he is putting out fires. ALL activity to stop on their first day back.

Leroy Martin tried this back when he was Supt....he wanted to reverse the percentages, less in summer, more in winter....the union grieved it and won, the arbitrator said you can't do this. FOP, check back in your files!!!!!

They did this in 024. The eliminated a couple of spots for summer for furloughs this summer. All these years I've been waiting and slowly moving and getting closer to summer furloughs. Now I'm being pushed back and by the time I get to them , my kids will have graduated from high school.

Sitting at the firehouse kitchen table and talking about your job the other day. We're there for you, and hope you're there for us, but the consensus was we can't for the life of us believe why would ever get out of you cars except to back each other up.

Summer is a great time to get that knee or shoulder surgery you've been putting off. Take care of yourself.
The good news is that more people might be able to use their time to take a day or two off during the summer. The problem with the furloughs are the extensions, which get priority over all other time requests. For the non-police people - say an officer takes their furlough over the forth of July (7B). Each segment is two weeks but the officer can extend the furlough on the front and back, to his regular days off. So if you have 8% of your officers taking 7B and 8% of your officers taking 8A you will have about two weeks where 16% of your officers are on furlough. Take the rest of the officers that are regular day off, on the medical, or detailed to every city event on weekends and you can see how no one can get off during the summer.
If the Commander changes anyone's furlough after the picks, your union representative should file a grievance. The problem is that most District union reps do not have the balls to do anything and most officers just don't care. That also goes for the Commander putting his people on days when there are bid spots open and he chooses not to open them.

Our contract sucks as far as the City's right to cancel RDO'S and work the manpower angle. Last few years have been brutal. It's like a Chinese sweatshop. On the bright side, Ald O'Shea is doing street cleaning (blowing leaves around) on my street for the 7,000th time this year hoping to catch some midnight officer, the elderly or a working mother from moving their car to put money in his Master Rahm's piggy bank. I can't believe what a scam this is. People in the neighborhood pick up on their own. How about using some of that money on sewers, alleys, and sidewalks. Would someone please run against this clown!

In my district the CAPS and Admin people simply switch their furlo to one that they couldn’t get seniority wise but one that they feel “entitled” to.
If taking away the summer vacations is good for the community then so be it. Cops have to sacrifice to help improve crime conditions. How selfish of you cops to only think of yourselves and your families. Just kidding.
Sucks to be the new guys! What's even better is all the new bosses get promoted so early in their careers that they never know what it's like to have a good furlo pic. Just able to stretch out to obtain a late February or early March furlo when BAMM! Now your a Sgt. Back to zero seniority. Then just when they make two years in grade (still not knowing the job) BAMM! Now a new LT. Depending on who their boyfriend/girlfriend is, that may be short lived. They don't care what a seasoned officer gets for furlo. They never had the good ones themselves.

As a matter of fact, the contract states that the department has total control over when you take your furlough subject to the department’s needs. They are only required to grant you a furlough and must grant them according to seniority. If they wanted to, they could completely block June, July, and August but then they would have a bigger shortage of manpower the remaining months. If you really think the contract says something else, I challenge you to find it and point it out.

This is the start of the demands on street officers. They consider furloughs a bonus, so accept what you are allowed to take. Summer furloughs are a luxury that the city cannot afford. Can you imagine the plans they have for the next contract? It will be a full attack by the city, communities and media to take all of the rights away that we fought for over the last ten years. I hope FOP is up and prepared for the challenge.

I remember squabs getting stuck with 1st & 2nd Period furlos (and Midnights) during their first 10+ years.
Not sure what changed, but always one or two were lucky to get a 3, 4 or 10th Period.
You guys really are getting shit upon every day by StupidIntended Jugghead and his Posse. It's too bad he gets to change the seasonal manpower needs as he sees fit. No hires means bodies or those additional needed bodies are sitting behind cubicles at HQ.
But please, for the upper managements sake, keep up with the ISR activity.
This job just gets better and better. I have had my last furlough on this job so it would not effect me either way. My next furlough will be in the form of a check from the city.

Could someone explain to me why I am a certified and fully trained Police Officer on the Aviation Police Dept, and I can't carry my weapon and now have all my uniforms stripped of the word Police? I seem to nail it as a part timer in a busy suburb and make TONS of arrests yet I walk in and have to hide everyday instead of locking up the numerous bad dudes that end up at O'Hare and the Clouted Dinosaurs on CPD can't seem to ever find.

So now we have a quota of videos to meet each month, and another method of punishment for officers that are targeted by vindictive and power drunk management.
Remember keep making arrests you will go far!!!!

Because you were really hired as an aviation security officer. Is that not your title? I understand that you are trained and certified but that is because of various requirements not because you really are a police officer. The videos are being synced with your assignments. If you go on 10 jobs, it's hard to justify only having one video. Nothing's really changed. Supervisors have always had to monitor them.
