The Future?

Suggested many times before if the Department actually wanted experienced help:
  • The retirees who contributed to the Dallas Police Department's staffing shortage may soon help plug the hole they left behind.

The department is looking to hire as many as 40 retirees as temporary civilian workers to fill vacancies in investigations, administration and field support.

The hiring program, which is expected to cost $1.8 million, would be beneficial to both retirees and the department, Deputy Chief Scott Walton told the City Council's public safety and criminal justice committee on Monday.
One of the hangups with civilians is there are certain sensitive parts of police work that require sworn personnel. Hiring retirees fulfills that (with some form of refresher course) and exploits literally hundreds of years police/investigative knowledge. But that might actually make sense and contribute to more efficient Department operations.

Tuesday evening in 004 near the Ford plant an unmarked squad from 620 was rear ended by a drunk driver. The vehicle fled the scene but was quickly stopped by a Sergeant in 004. The driver of the vehicle was drinking at a "private club" and had open alcohol in the vehicle. The drive of the vehicle was charged with DUI, leaving the scene and open alcohol. The kicker is he is a member of CFD. aka a firefighter/chili cooker. And to top it off has a previous IR#.

Maybe inspector ferguson should look at this one.

If I get hired as a retiree I will require special accommodations:
1) Days only preferably the desk
2) I need to duck early especially on the days I arrive late
3) I need an unmarked squad to go shopping
4) A uniform allowance
5) An hour and half lunch and 2 personals.
6) I might have to go on the medical a few times a year.
Thanks I'm a little flexible on the uniform allowance. ♠️

For some reason, Rahm has turned down this idea before. If you remember about 5 years ago, they were looking into this, but suddenly stopped with no explanation. Rahm is more interested in contracts with connected people than public safety.

Except you will have some goofs come back and think they are still the police, and that they still have seniority, and that they don’t have to do shit for someone with 20 years less OTJ. They also won’t be happy making significantly less money. It’s cheaper to hire a civilian and do a proper background investigation. For tasks that require sworn personnel to handle them, that’s who should handle them. Not a retired babbling on about “when I was OTJ....”

It’s not a good idea for a lot of reasons. It would be a disaster in Chicago. I can see the Aviation security staff applying, and telling everyone they have been absorbed by CPD and are now police officers.

Hiring back police retirees makes to much sense! the city could have coppers with actual street experience inside, could work part time, saving the city millions and putting so many more able bodied coppers back on the beat! The going rate for retired coppers is thousands less than active. 35th street could be finally cleaned out, the parking lot with all the new squads for the desk dollies could be cleared and the vehicles given to patrol where they belong! Brother works at fleet and they are planning to have unmarked "undercover" cars for units that need them. The detective division will be all driving marked cars to increase viability and help to easily locate the vehicles, to assign to in progress calls so the detectives can respond lights and sirens and will prevent the hiding!

I'm retiring soon and the last thing I'm thinking about is getting another job, especially working for a police department. If you did not figure out how to retire without going back to work, then you did not plan for your retirement. It's not only the pension and deferred, its getting rid of your bills, mortgage, car payment and credit card payments. I was fortunate, I stayed married and have seen divorces kill your finances and plans. I don't want to preach, but to the new guys and gals, start right now planning your great escape. Try to factor in not working if you don't have to, have fun while your young. Exception to the rule of not working, running you own business, which is different then working and the stresses involved.

".....you would have to be crazy to stick around the Chi while being retired."

Did you ever hear about the grass not always being greener on the other side? "I am out of here the minute I retire" has been written a thousand times and a thousand different ways in the SCC comments over the years. People say, "Why are you still living in Chicago? You are no longer required to live there with the crime, taxes and graft?"

Yes, there are a lot of unpleasant things in Chicago like crime, high taxes, graft, 9.5, Madislicksters X 2, Prickwrinkle, SloJoe Ferguson, SpecialEd and a host of bad merit bosses, but when is the last time in Chicago we had a terrorist attack, a mass shooting, a devastating earthquake, an all consuming forest fire, a killer seiche, a horrific hurricane, a lengthy drought or a massive flood?

I think I will continue to stay put, at least for the time being. If we can rid ourselves of the democRATS and no longer unnecessarily restrain our law enforcement professionals, I might never leave.

hire retirees 1-2 days per week maximum 6 hours a day for hourly salary of a recruit
mailmen , front door , back door headquarters , human square
records division , news affairs , 4 shifts a day 6 hours a shift
a win , win for CPD and retirees
why are supervisors assigned to clerical duty as supervisors of a few sworn and most civilian employees
total waste of money

Right. That was the problem last time they considered it for Detective CMO's. The retirees didn't want to work five days a week and bitched that they only wanted one or two days not a full week. They would be useless and violate the residency requirement. Hey if they get caught it's only a part time gig right? It would be clouted retirees. From the 1-2 day comment, I take it you would be one of the select few?

Hire retired CPDs to do a full time job if they can handle it.Presumably their experience will allow for the better assignment of limited first responses. If you want an easy part-time gig, forget it. Nobody handling those responses should coast! One hopes that the professionalism of the CPD retirees in that position will provide for the best use of manpower. But that's coming from one who works in private industry and is not beholden to the arcane rules of the City, when it comes to finding the best job candidates & hiring them....

Hiring retired Police Officers to take over civilian jobs does make a lot of sense, but it won't work in some cities where the first response to almost anything, is to throw the Police under the bus.
It will not work when the retiree has to work with a bunch of idiots that can remember test answers but have no clue what they're supposed to be doing when they get promoted. It won't work where the Police Officer's highest goal is to retire and GTFO of town A/S/A/P!

Last time they were going to hire retired coppers to work the desk, the day of their orientation, the City tells them that their pay was several dollars less per hour than they were told when hired. They all walked out of the orientation.

A friend of mine asked if I was going to apply for it. I told him, "They'd need a court order to make me come back to work for the Department."
