Interesting Move by a Daley

  • John Daley on Thursday became the first Cook County commissioner to publicly switch sides on the contentious issue of the county’s tax on sweetened beverages, telling the Chicago Sun-Times he now thinks the penny-per-ounce tax should be repealed.

Daley had been one of eight commissioners who voted for the tax when the county board approved it last year. The commissioners deadlocked on the issue, but board President Toni Preckwinkle cast the tie-breaking vote in favor of the tax.

Daley, a South Side Democrat, said public opinion swayed his vote.

“I heard from my district, and I think we’re elected to represent our district,” he said. “I heard overwhelming opposition.”
So for the first time in living memory, a Daley listened to his constituents and reversed course on a tax hike. It must be the End of Days approaching.

More likely this is an example of giving Peewrinkle enough rope......

Were the reaction to this asinine tax not so undeniably huge and vehement, little johnny dimplebutt would remain deaf, dumb and blind, as usual.....

Daley is one of a handful of behind the curtain democrats ,calling the shots in Chicago ,Crook County
If the final vote turns out to be 10-7 for repeal, with Queen Sugar vetoing the repeal ..you will know Daley's action all circus

(Cue the piano outro from "Layla")

This wasn't Daley listening to his constituents. He was the voice of the machine commanding the way things are gonna go. Daley will never, ever lose his seat. However, plenty of the other commissioners are now vulnerable because of this ridiculous tax. The machine will gladly sacrifice the tax rather than lose any of its seats to anyone willing to run and topple the weaker machine seat holders. It's also a sign that they've had it with Prickwrinkle and his gross mismanagement of a spot that should really run itself and never cause the machine any trouble.

This is two incompetent fuckups in a row that have held the spot. Old Man Stoger may have been a machine hack, but he was sharp enough to keep his mouth shut and let things run themselves. Neither Todd the Clod nor Madame Goiter will be getting a hospital named after themselves anytime soon, or in the future.

Prickwrinkle is a dead woman walking. She just don't know it yet. After the Machine gets done with her, its gonna take them two days to thaw her out to perform the autopsy.

After the Machine gets done with her.....come on people- the Machine put her there and she does their bidding. The tax was not her brainchild---the machine (which is much bigger than Cook County--note the out of state support ads from BillDeBlobbio) wanted to bring in more dollars by more taxes - the machine never has anything to lose--they rule cook government, city government and every city department...and once they gut the FOP contract (and then the PBPA contracts- cause they will roll claiming "we would lose those benefits too- so we decided to make concessions we wanted") all will be quiet

It's all a political scam. Don't believe any of it. He did hear from his constituents and is now and was probably given permission to take some political cover. Now he comes across as listening. They have been saying that since day one. Look for one more commissioner to do the same
Problem is ifDaley would have voted against it originally, it would not have passed. Now they need 2 more votes to override Preckwinkles veto. It all a plan and she and Daley both know there won't be two more votes. They think we are fools and Daley can say during the next election that he listened to his constituents and changed his vote
He should have done that on the first vote and we wouldn't be in this position

They will not have the necessary votes, but he will be the hero and get reelection

True enough, SCC, although it was little mayor Richie's failure to raise taxes and pay into the pension funds -- when the debt was still manageable -- that led Chicago into the financial sinkhole in which the even littler man now so cutely dances.
