Lollapalooza Targeted?

  • Stephen Paddock, the gunman who perched himself in a Las Vegas hotel room and used a litany of guns to kill 58 people attending a concert below, booked rooms at a Michigan Avenue hotel overlooking Grant Park during Lollapalooza, but never showed up, the Chicago Sun-Times has confirmed.

Paddock booked two rooms at The Blackstone Hotel, 636 S. Michigan Ave., one from Aug. 1 through Aug. 6 and the other during the duration of the fest, Aug. 3 through Aug. 6, according to a report from TMZ. A source with direct knowledge of the matter confirmed to the Sun-Times that Paddock booked the rooms at the hotel that weekend.
No truth to the rumor that he didn't show up because he didn't want to be outgunned.

This has, of course, triggered a lot of questions for Rahm, who immediately had his people start spinning yarns:
  • CPD will have heavy undercover presence at this #ChicagoMarathon Well over 1,000 additional officers have been added to our deployment.
We've seen the deployment order. There aren't 1,000 officers listed in it. And do you know why you won't see anything close to 1,000 officers deployed at the Marathon?
  • Rahm hasn't hired them yet
  • They don't actually exist
  • They're invisible
It's a good thing the sponsors are paying the overtime for this event. Ferguson was burning up his calculator trying to figure it out.

Googleme or whatever his name is, is lying about the 1,000 officers. Someone else was on WBBM 780 this afternoon talking about how CPD always secured high rises around outdoor events, and the media ate it up like it was actually true. The fact is unless the President is in town, no one from the CPD is doing anything like a security lock-down of high rises. This was a complete surprise (as most terror attacks are) that is going to require a complete re-write of the manuals....which CPD will never buy, read or operate under.

Those new invisible officers will make great undercover officers!
They will blend right in to any scene, Uptown, Downtown, Englewood, anywhere.
The criminals will never see them.
The local residents will not be offended by their presence.
Their OT costs will be minimal, so Joe Ferguson will be happy.
Just don't count on them for backup!

If the city had 20,000 well trained officers and this guy was in his room at the Bismarck, the same thing would have happened. It took place in 9 minutes, not enough time to locate and eliminate him. If they arrived 2 or 3 minutes earlier so maybe 40 to 50 would have died. Most were killed within the first few minutes when the weren't aware of what was happening and didn't have time to find cover

It's at times like this that one must remember Rahm's famous quote from the days when he was Bill Clinton's Lil "Tough Guy" : "Never let a crisis go to waste." Before I even heard about the Lollapalooza threat, I had thought, where is the Mayor of Las Vegas? In almost all of the news coverage pertaining to the Las Vegas massacre, we see competent and articulate law enforcement officials confronting the Media. And I thought, if that would happen here, Rahm would be on T.V. non-stop! Rahm in his treacherous and hypocritical style, would exploit the crisis beyond anyone's imagination! A tragedy of the Las Vegas magnitude, would afford Rahm stature similar to Mayor Giuliani during the 9/11 Attacks. And make no mistake about it, if something ever were to happen here, God Forbid; CPD would be hard pressed to respond. Morale hit another low, with the recent accusations from IG Ferguson. His report virtually accused Chicago Police of Fraud. And Rahm"s Baghdad Bob Googleme had no response in defense of the Police Department. Because to do so would be an admission that Rahm has mismanaged the Chicago Police Department from the hiring of McCarthy, to the selection of Bighead Ed. The effect of the Mass Exodus of experienced bosses under McCarthy, and the Large number of retirees is taking effect on the Department. Yes, they are trying to turn out recruits, but will these recruits stay and will they make up for the attrition? In addition, the condescending and accusatory nature of the Ferguson report has left many officers angry and apprehensive about working over-time. Sure, there will always be over-time whores; but they too are getting tired. Personally, I know of several officers who have turned down over-time for the Marathon and Cubs. The City is less safe today, than anyone is willing to admit. Be Careful, Rahm has your backs. Baby "G"

The only useful insight I've seen out of this whole mess thus far--or likely will--was an op-ed on one of the alt news sites suggesting that these big venues need to majorly rethink how they do site selection and private on-site security. The cops won't save you, since when seconds count they're only minutes away, and gun control won't save you, since the US government can't even make drugs go away and rising violence in gun-grabby Europe and Latin America are a good indicator of how it would play out. While it's never going to be possible to eliminate all risk, in 2017 it's probably not sufficient for event organizers to say that anything more than bouncing drunks is someone else's problem. I would add to that, here as I did in their comment section, that this parallels how digital security operates. When someone like Equifax gets totally pwned--another of those "this happens more than it should" kind of things--nobody looks to the NSA to protect them from the big scary hackers or to Congress to Just Pass Common Sense Regulation(tm) banning open source software utilities like nmap (for the non-techies in the room, open-source basically means that anyone can download the source code and create the software themselves, and it's typically maintained by a decentralized network of enthusiasts rather than a single company like Microsoft). They look at Equifax, and ask why their security was not commensurate with the level of risk they were taking on by putting so much data in one place, and look at other companies like them and ask if they're getting their security up to snuff.

Yeah, this was a complete surprise like 9-11 was a surprise.
But was it, really?

Lost of us said that Arafat was playing a game, coaxing people into the idea that hijacking plane then getting them on the ground and negotiating was just a ploy, a set up, a path, not a endgame, not a destination.

But we were just called tin foil hat wearers and conspiracy theory nuts....and dismissed. Then when the lull was deep enough, when nobody thought anything beyond, "negotiate it out", the planes were used as guided missiles.Imagine that.

Sorry if it is just a bit off, a bit offensive, to see folks say this kind of thing is a surprise, because it isn't a surprise at all to us "tin foil" crowd. We indeed did tell yall so.

Folks see this threat when the President is around, but suddenly don't anymore when its just, well, people? C'mon now.

So here is a future I told you so. OK? Right now ISIS claims attacks (whether they did it or not isn't germane to this point being made). The RESPONSE the WORLD is seeing TO Americans attacked this way is what? Oh yeah, BI PARTISAN UNITY in .....wait for it......MORE GUN CONTROL on AMERICANS.

Gee, that will sure deter muslim zealots from attacking that same way, huh?
Has the American population been so dumbed down that nobody SEES the buffoonery in this "bumpstock" ridiculousness??

Well we can only hope law enforcement learns the hard lessons from Vegas and applies them to save lives later on (I purposely didn't say the CPD because we are a dysfunctional joke at this point). First, LEMART (first aid training), tourniquets and Quick-Clot save lives (watch the Las Vegas MPD body cam footage). Second, patrol rifles with red-dots were a good start but now its time to have designated marksmen's rifles with magnified optics that can reach out 300-400 yards if need be (it's over 300 yards from the Blackstone Hotel to Grant Park). Finally, the courts need to allow police to use drones for protective surveillance. They're cheap, practical, cover a large area and FLIR cameras can detect muzzle blasts and record the criminal or terrorist without them knowing. The modern criminal/terrorist/anarchist has changed their playbook...so should we.

Plan for Barrel Bombs out of hijacked helicopters, or a crowd dousing spray of radioactive plant water from a beat up old crop duster. You just can't plan ahead for every possibility. Living a life is a calculated risk in a complex world.

Seriously, everything I've seen the last few days indicated drone attacks. Couldn't be simpler. Just had some real estate asshole buzzing drones all over the neighborhood. I assume getting aerial shots of the property. I hope.

I am on the SWAT team. I want you to know that the entire team felt terrible about that mistake. We know our job is to make the scene secure so our fellow officers can go into a location and search w/o having to worry if the site is secure. We failed that night/morning. There are no excuses. The SWAT team has been a full time team since 2005. In that time we have served hundreds of warrants for our fellow officers who put in time and effort to work up those warrants. Often there are people going in the location after us that are former coworkers, friends, and sometimes even family. We strive to do our best. The last thing we would ever want is to see someone get hurt from our mistake. We are also human. From time to time we will make a mistake. If you are a police officer and you don't get that then you are as bad as those who want to second guess and criticize everything police officers do. If you are a troll so be it. But if you are a fellow officer it must drive you crazy being so perfect while being surrounded by imperfect coworkers.

He also rented rooms overlooking a Rap Concert in Las Vegas. Can you imagine what would have happened if some old white guy shot fifty black men, women and teens? An endless cycle of atrocity and revenge. He just might have started a disaster with people seeking "vengeance" for the shooting. And you know who would have been some of the first people shot up? That blue uniformed guy trying to keep the peace.

You sir are wrong on this one, there would be riots for about a week or so, but as usual it would have been confined to Black communities. Then all of the Rev's would come out of the wood work and they would be bought off. Then it would have evolved into the black community going into the forgiving mode. They would be crazy to attack a community outside their own due the unknown factor of others with guns. That's another reason the 2nd amendment is so important.

Spot on.

this event was absolutely a worse case type scenario. Even rifle/carbine fire from the ground would have been ineffective unless you really backed off and got the angle right, or took an adjacent position on another building.. Most first responders drive right into the scene.

Moral of the story: learn from this terrible event to better respond in the future.

Stay off the Blog Masters, Masters, Masters and that goes for your faithful sidekick Tonto "RAYBO" Hamilton.

Graded videos disappearing. Saw it with my own eyes. We passed up good quality candidates so a certain training SGT could bring on his Army and work out buddies. The ones that were passed were having accidental discharges and shooting no shoots. This caused a huge divide between the team that saw how unfair it was. It is now us vs the cheaters on the team. That's the truth.

Good suggestions, but none of this would have helped shooting stopped in 9 minutes, not enough time to locate the offender and neutralize him. Even SWAT with their take home cars couldn’t get there in 9 minutes LOL

Probably didn't show up in Chicago because he didn't want to pay his increased 'hotel' tax, gas tax or the just passed 'soda tax' for the 2 bottles of Pepsi he ordered in Vegas...

When is Rahm’s donors c3 who runs Lolla going to pay for the damage to grant park? I have a freedom of information response saying that there is no documentation available because c3 hired a private contractor. Total bs. Also why can’t c3 or Rahm’s brother’s company reimburse the taxpayers for the security. Rahm needs to be jailed.

he guy was a democrat. He live within drive distance from Vegas. There is no way to get all his crap here to do anything. This is just misdirection and playing victim. They said he went to anti trump rallies.

More Chicago BS.

10/06/2017 12:09:00 AM

How the hell did you know he was a Democrat????? Your assumption of partisanship is asenine. Let's see, he owned several weapons, he was a multimillionaire, and he was white living in a town known for wealth. Yup sounds like a Democrat to me. Making this tragedy about politics is fucking idiotic. 58 people die, hundreds injured and your worried about whether or not he is a Democrat. Fucking moron.

Totally agree with 10pm. "They said"? Who's they? The lying, fabricated news media.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok. You are human but what about the other times??? I personally used SWAT only to find a guy hiding in the basement of the target house basement. I guess that's acceptable because your human and from time to time you make mistakes. The problem is those "mistakes" could have gotten someone killed. Excuses are like a**holes.... everyone has one but most of us don't shit in our pants (quite a few times)

Some of the greatest people I know are on this dept. if shit goes south, you can count on me AND...I can count on you. Just packed my kit for tomorrow. Hopefully it’s just another day at the races. But if it isn’t, I think I’m good. Stay safe brothers and sisters, and God bless CPD.

This is Chicago PD so there is nothing, adsolutely NOTHING, that is legit. Swat included. Sorry green clad "operators" but I'm sure in your hearts you all realized that already. Swat = HBT version 2. Clout is still the #1 determining factor.

Everything on CPD has low standards including swat. It is driven by clout. Look at the names on the swat team. We had several of these hair gels in my district. They wanted to play pretend swat so daddy made a phone call. One of them, never even worked the streets. He was an admin bitch. How good can our swat team really be? Most of the Sgts are merit. Anytime they competed against other major swat teams they lost. Several years ago they missed a subject after they accidentally started a fire. They told the firemen it was clear. Surprise Surprise. The offender is caught, not by swat, but CFD. By the way he was armed. Battalion Fire Chief was pissed. Swat has had a long proud tradition of being fuck ups and clout babies.

Lets see Paddocks room reservation and cancellation printout from the hotel. Otherwise it's just a story created by some opportunist looking to capitalize on a situation. Some shifty weasel, .....like Rahm. I no longer believe anything the Media reports. Trump's right, they are Fake. No Evidence, No Believe . Even with some evidence, a good possibility it is faked.

Swat fucked up period. The problem with swat is they run around thinking they are in control of a scene and fail to utilize other personnel to accomplish their mission. The more eyes the better, so to the swat boys, think about using department resources, like PO's on the scene. And stop that single file thing, you look stupid.

10/07/2017 12:06:00 AM

We are in very bad shape. Many many will die. Won't surprise me if it will be because of SWAT's incompetency. SWAT has missed subjects several times. Don't let them fool you about it only happened once. As far as they felt bad? Then why did you contact the media whining like little bitches, about taking a day as punishment?

Wish it wasn't true, but it is. ML and the new training staff completely destroyed swat. I don't trust these new guys. They are terrible! They don't belong here! Lamb you better start taking control, or you will answer the Superintendent for a vote of no confidence. We are not kidding. The majority of the team is sick of this BS. You and a couple of the other Sgts need to leave. Try to pretend you are in charge. And you better get the team explosive breaching. It's about time you and overtime johnny earn your pay. We go through the door while your ass is in the TOC.

Signed,
