Continuing Corruption
This has to be the worst deal ever concocted by a Chicago pol, bar none (this is an archived DNAInfo.com link - DNAInfo is now out of business):
- The city will pay $20 million in 2018 to the private firm that leases the city's parking meters — in addition to all of the revenue from the meters — under the terms of the much-loathed 2008 deal, officials said.
The city must make "true-up" payments to Chicago Parking Meters to compensate the firm for lost revenue when meters are removed, temporarily taken out of commission with the city's permission or used by motorists with disabled parking permits, according to the terms of the deal.
Despite changes made by Mayor Rahm Emanuel in 2013 designed to make the deal better for city taxpayers, the 2018 "true-up" payment wil rise 16.3 percent from last year, said Molly Poppe, a spokeswoman for Emanuel's budget office.
And Shortshanks spent just about every dime from a 75-year lease within three(?) years - all of $1.2 billion. And which law firm was it representing the parking meter people? Who got hired by them?

Morgan Stanley finagled that sweet deal...then quickly sold off the lease again, a Vanecko-Daley Jr. broker commission wouldn't be a shock.
Seems odd doesn't it, the City is agreeing to install more metered spaces and increase hours of operation when they only get a small portion of the revenue. All this time the City could have been raising the parking rates and collecting 100% of the revenue.
Either they crafted the inclusion of the right if way in the deal or they're stupid by not using the rights to the public way as a way to wiggle out of that disasterous deal.
Rahm this month approved some 600 additional metered spaces, that revenue should cover all the bills.
Chicago Parking Meter LLC (yes, it's a global offshore ownership conglomerate) is taking in over $130 mil a year and the City is still paying THEM millions in "lost revenue".
Unfrickinbelievable.
And mighty joe ferguson is complaining about PO overtime.
Lots of people are making a ton of money and nobody is going to interrupt that meter deal cash cow.
Look at the bright side, your grandkids and great grandkids will see the lease expire sometime around 2083, if Chicago is any bit solvent by then.
Whole deal was bust. They also used areas like social security offices as examples of how much revenue they lost to disability Parker’s. Of course those areas had a much larger percentage of disabled placards because the parkers were visiting the SS offices
Let's look at the math--- 1.2 billion for a 75 year lease comes 16 million a year not considering inflation. So if Chicago is going to pay 20 million, well shit-- this company is coming out ahead for the year. In other words don't let a drunk Irishmen conduct a business deal for you. Anyone wanna let Daley refinance your house on your behalf-- I heard you will be in 75 year mortgage

So, I'm no mathmagician, but 20 million a year for the next 66 years of the contract equals roughly 1.3 billion. In other words, the city will actually end up PAYING this firm to take all the parking revenue. Brilliant!

The question I have ,is there anyone checking those numbers that are presented or do they just bend over ( further) and pay what they are told? Seems to me you could pay a full time city hack about $100k a year and I'm sure they could find flaws in the math. That is, if they wanted to.

Both suggestions are excellent, but there is one request. Might a pole with a parking meter on it be substituted for the rail?

It's only news if it's different or unusual. Corruption in Chicago is expected and accepted based on voting patterns. You keep electing same crooks so your getting what you desired. Keep up good work as city is continuing long flush down big white bowl.
The big question, with taxes and other city service charges raising 4 times faster then your wages how long can you last. Water, garbage, gas tax, bag tax, sales tax, phone tax and of course real estate taxes raises this year alone. Better ask the boss for a 15% raise just to stay even.
