Fire Rescue
- A woman was screaming and holding three young children as she ran toward the Chicago police officers just after midnight on the West Side. “There’s a fire! There’s still family inside,” she yelled.
Harrison District police Officer Jason Fong and his partner ran into the burning home in the 3900 block of West Congress Parkway in the East Garfield Park neighborhood early on Monday. Two other officers about half a block away also went into the home to make sure no one else was trapped.
“The fire was intense,” said Fong, 37, recounting the experience at an early morning news conference Tuesday. “I could feel the flames. It was kind of like burning and irritating our faces. It was very hard to see.”
Officer Julio Ruiz, 45, said he was concerned more children could be inside. The first woman’s children appeared to be 5, 2 and 1 month. He chased after an older woman who was trying to run back inside to find relatives.
Two other Officers, Siler and Baretto, were also lauded as heroes.

Some good news to offset the shit storm that will break later today: Sgt and nearly his whole team of area central Gang/Sat morons led out of Homan Sq by the Feds and arrested for stealing $$$$$. They'll be indicted before the weekend. Stupid greedy assholes that think they're smarter than everyone else. Enjoy losing the job, the pension and maybe even your freedom. Jerkoffs. Area team and their sergeant outta Fillmore arrested for pocketing cash on a FBI sting. Search warrants done on all their homes. Great work officers! Word to the minions...fire is an unforgiving bitch, don't minimize the real risk they were exposed to. Having said that; I'm proud of CPD...... Retired, but still looking for that bus check....

Ive been in a few. Once I had to leave a kid in it cause I couldn't get to her despite crawling on my belly underneath it. A terrible thing, leaving a child. I'll never forget it.

Well done, officers, but as pointed out above, this is not something to make a habit of. By all means, do a 360 of the building and use the citywide band so Fire has a solid heads up of what's happening.
They're lucky to have made it through. No SCBA, no turnout gear, and wearing a bunch of synthetic material (jacket, uniform and vest) that will MELT onto your skin at a high enough ambient temperature isn't a good idea. You do NOT have to have direct contact with flame for this to happen.
Opening doors and busting out windows changes the ventilation profile of the building. More air entering the structure means more air is available for fire development.
A FLASHOVER (youtube is your friend here) is when every combustible item in an area ignites within the space of a couple seconds. Even an FF wearing the latest and greatest gear is going to be killed or severely burned unless they can escape within the first two seconds of a developing flashover - and that's with the proper PPE.
