Paid "Volunteers"?
No idea how this "study" could have anything resembling academic "credibility:"
- Have you had an experience with police violence in the city of Chicago? If yes, please contact us if you would like to participate in a PAID interview!
Dr. Laurence Ralph from Harvard University is conducting a study along with NORC at the University of Chicago. The study is about police-community relations in the city of Chicago. We are looking for people who have experienced violence from the Chicago Police to take part in an in-person interview.
The discussion will last about 60 minutes and we are offering $40 upon completion of the interview of the interview as a token of our appreciation.
Yet another fishing expedition.

I might as well sign up for this for the $40. Fuck em.
The key words here is "get paid"!
Is this a joke ? Its not April yet.
Flawed study. Paying for "yes" answers.
And just how exactly are they going to verify
the claims. Inspired by the #MeToo movement.
I was minding my own business when I was struck in the head by the billy club of a CPD officer. I was not engaged in any unlawful conduct and it happened right in the station. I have a photo taken right after the incident to prove it. No paperwork was filed or arrest report done and the officer still works without any punishment. Ok, I was pulling my stick out and popped myself in the head, where is my $40?
"Yeah, my partner punched me in the arm at roll call. Now where is my $40?"
“We are looking for people who have experienced violence from the Chicago Police...huh? Do you mean your looking for Chicago Police officers who have experienced violence? Well, sign me up, libtard!
Can they make shit up for a whole hour. Of course they can.
I don't think I ever experienced violence from CPD, but once I smiled and nodded at an officer and she didn't reciprocate. I forever became fearful of the police after that. Does that count? I'm retired and could use 40 bucks.
40.00 an hour? I make $400.00 selling drugs on the corner while waving back to the CPD who wave on there way by.
I could use 40 bucks and I could lie just as good as they can were do I sign up
As a old retired guy I have an idea. Anyone who is retired should sign up for the interview. You could go in, take up an hour up their time and put $40 in your pocket. Tell them all the stories of how you used to have to fight with druggies, pissed off husbands, and gang bangers. Then take the 40 bucks and go out for dinner.
For $40 I can make I can spin some wonderful yarns. Of course these stories will be viewed as the 100% true when related to the medias outlets. The CPD is under attack and has very little defense. No one at city hall will stand up for them, no one at CPD HQ will stand up for them and neither will the FOP. This will be fodder for a number of COPA investigations. Look out there are gunning for you. Stay extra fetal.
I was standing on a corner at 3:00am police car went by and cop made a finger gun and pointed it at me. Have been able to get a good nights sleep since then. Keep waking up with that gun pointed my way. O need something for my pain and suffering.
University of Chicago what did you expect? Liberal bastion of snowflakes and social justice warriors. Answer all Hyde Park calls following all posted traffic regs.
A Lake sunami sweeping over entire campus when class is in session would be a good start.
Every working copper has experienced some sort of violence as the victim. I would strongly suggest they sign up for the interview. It would be really interesting to see how they respond.
A new twist to the old shuck and jive. Why not? Where else can you go and make $40 an hour?
Do these “academics “ believe every story told to them by the “community”? Is there no fact checking?
It make’s me giggle every time I think of half of Austin & Fillmore lined up outside for the interview. Everyone in law enforcement knows what some people would do for $40.
Is the $40 per person government grant money?
Garbage in and garbage out.
I signed up! Hopefully they call me. I'll tell them a little story and get my 40 bucks
No interviews of officers who have been victims of violence while lawfully performing their duties?
No bias there.
Liberal scum.
Once the Hood gets wind of this, they'll be lines around the block with people telling BULLSCHIT stories. I wonder how much $$$$ they have to give out...
One time the captain hurt my feelings. Does that qualify as violence?
Talk about slanted. They should be asking for anybody that has had interaction with the Police......good or bad.
I hope the ivory tower ass hole experiences some shithead hospitality around his hotel.
as a cop and a psychology college degree holder , this is not an ethical and academically sound way to interview without bias. It's common sense this is not how studies are to be initiated , anyone without a degree can see how the data is skewed and biased. But when it comes to crime or racial issues and police, this entire study will be the Chicago police hates black and brown people and blah blah blah . The lead professors and lead researches already made up Their mind what the results they want, police are bar and criminals are good
Someone could write volumes about all the good things CPD officers do. Not only would it be better reading but it would be truthful as well.
The cpd boxing team can sign up for this.
Here is his info from: https://aaas.fas.harvard.edu/people/laurence-ralph
Paragraph one: " Associate Professor" -read not much money.
Paragraph two: "His scholarly work explores how the historical circumstances of police abuse..."
Let us see - do a study, encourage (carrot & stick) with ca$h and get the results YOU want. Sounds fair, huh?
NOT ILLINOIS. NOT LAW.
Just let like the 'Compliment an Officer" tab on the COPA website. Straight to their spam folder. They do not give a fuck. Has anyone ever been in receipt of a positive review from COPA? {Crickets}
Looking for people who have experienced police violence? I'm a police officer. I've been struck, kicked, bitten, spit on, and had cars accelerate in my direction. Oh, oh, wait, and I've been called every name you can imagine, and some that you can't. $40/hour? Not a bad return on some time. Sure, sign me up. I swear we should all go in and sign up.
The key question here is " where is the money coming from for this". Is it federal grant money, state grant money, private funds from some rich liberal? Someone is paying for this and paying the professor ( I use that term lightly) to do this. When a college professor gets a grant he must submit the application to the government agency with his needs, what he wants to do and his goals. I wonder if a FOIA request could discover this grant application?
It is not uncommon to pay participants in a study a small stipend or reward card for taking part in a study. Remember Bill Murray in Ghost Busters shocking the shit out of the guy who finally left and said it wasn't worth the 20 bucks or whatever. It is accepted practice. I would hope in this case however someone would look at the possibility that people might make up somethings just to get an easy $40 dollars. It is not the payment that should really be questioned, but how they are verifying the respondents stories. Or, are they taking them at face value without any further inquiries. That is where the skepticism should come in.
Sign me up! For $40 I'll make up some stories! They'd all start with "And this one time..." or "Well you see, what happened was..." and then end with "...and that's why I won't ride a Divvy in my neighborhood anymore."
You know, to keep with the popular narrative.
Speaking of money ,, 19th Ward O' shea gave $400,000 dollars of taxpayer money in 2015 , to help a Company build a fast food restaurant on 107th and Western, in Beverly
The payback for Chicago taxpayers ? restaurant has a Chicago menu that charges 10 % more than the Oak Lawn or any other company suburb restaurant ....5 miles away from Beverly ,is Oak Lawn
The Chicago Way again..... It never stops
Yeah, when I was 17 I had a smart mouth and got tuned up pretty good. Best thing that ever happened to me. Been polite law abiding citizen ever since. Can I get 40 bucks for something that happened 40 years ago and my my fault?
I say we all sign up for this bullshit and get our forty american!
Is Billionaire J. B. Pritzker is funding the project?
Actually you guys are on to something. If every copper and/or family, friends sign up with "a story" it'll make his pool of candidates so large that it'll be unmanageable, humming up the works. Delay his "study" so much it will become yesterday's news.
Well shit...
JUST...
In time for
"Black History Month."
>Pause<
Fuck you, Rahm.
FORTY DOLLAS ???
Aw com’on now, help a brother out, how much can I get for a 10 minute interview?
I’ll bet this professor was the inspiration for the tv character, Oswald Bates:

Laurence Ralph is John L. Loeb Associate Professor of the Social Sciences in the Departments of Anthropology and African and African American Studies at Harvard University (all scholarship, never paid a dime).
Google his Curriculum Vitae, you’ll be amused.
Harvard Community College.
Mmmm-mmm-mm.

I can talk about police violence. Violence against the police but I don't think they want to hear that from me. Years ago a study was done about police violence as I recall the bottom line is that the greatest predictor of police use of force was violence used against the police. Who would have thought that.
In 1962 an Old Irish cop kicked me in the ass and told me to get off the corner. Am I eligible for the $40. ♠️
University of Chicago Crime Lab? Bwaaahhhh hahhhh hahhhh hahhhh hahhhhh.
It's Not Unusual to pay for this kind of thing. Otherwise there is not much incentive for people to participate.
That's amusing, 40 bucks. That's what democrats considered real money in Americans pockets. Thousand dollar bonuses and a pay raise are just crumbs. F.U. Nancy!

"Well, yeah. I have experienced Police brutality in Chicago, and theft by the Police. This one time I was robbing a 7/11 and this cop knocked me down and took my gun away. Never did get it back.
(SARCASM).

I was not raised in the city, but I am a son of a (now retired) police officer in the south suburbs. If I may, I would like to recount some of my experiences with Chicago PD:
1) I was having trouble with a ticket machine (and getting impatient) in Randolph Station and a police officer kindly assisted me by showing me how to process my payment correctly.
2) I could not find the entry way to the Orange Line at Midway and an officer took a few moments to give me directions.
3) An officer on horseback was patrolling near the Shed Aquarium and offered my then three-year old daughter a ride on the horse around the lot. She still remembers.
4) Same daughter (now 21) is at UIC and commutes with another man for Army Reserve duty in the north suburbs. He does not charge her much at all for gasoline. Care to guess his profession and the city he works for?
I am one of millions who come in and out the city and these have been just some of my experiences. Whenever I find myself in line behind one of you at a sandwich shop and or a food mart, I always try to offer to buy lunch just to express my appreciation for the many unnoticed (but not insignificant) things you do for people like me.
Stay safe and healthy!
(OT) another reason to never vote democratic:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5340391/Democrat-played-CANDY-CRUSH-State-Union.html
State of the union world watching and this moron playing children's game, no wonder every democratic run city state county is bankrupt and crime ridden!
every police officer that has been assaulted or battered should call
Fat head Ed is gone but is sick he has FEDHEIMERS!
Welcome to the gym was pretty rough, does that count?
Are those our tax dollars at use. Who authorizes thus bull shit.
$40 for an hour of stories of CPD violence? They'll scream "RACISM!" and demand, and get, $100. LOL
Welllll, I'm 30 years old and I remember one time, VERY clearly, when Lt. Jon Burge put his cell phone battery against my bare testicle and called his partner. I was so terrified I copped to the murder right there. I've had to suffer with this bracelet on my ankle since waiting for a settlement so I could use a little pocket change.
I needs me a benjamin to tell you whats you wants to hear.
Can police officers take part? I have had some rough encounters where luckily officers were present.
$40 bucks, Screw you! My daughter had the officers in 020 recover her property before she even reliazed it was stolen from her vehicle. CPS computer, who cares, but all her handwritten notes for the children with special needs she works with were priceless. She asked me what to do. I told her it's up to her. She made a donation to the CPD Chaplains fund. She said these are the people that help the people on the street. She got a handwritten thank you note from some priest and a holy card for St. Micheal(remember those old Catholic school days). There is still some hope. Retired, but stay safe!!!!!
Make up a bullshit story and collect the $40.00.
Instead of 40 acres and a mule, 40 dollars and some bull
Funny how you can't pay a witness $40 to come to court to testify.
There was a wagon team in the seventies in the 014th District. Both of them played violins professionally.
The only way this study could be given a morsel of creditability would be to state that each interview will be given while connected to a polygraph with a certified polygraph examiner.
