Retiree Age/Time

A reader was kind enough to re-create the statistics we had in graph form:

Looks like many are bailing out as close to the 25 year step raise and as near to 55 as they can.

If you look back further before 2007. Go back to 1990's the trend would be all downhill. I came on in the 90's and there was a lot of people with 35 and 40 years. Just about everyone would stay until they were in their 60's. Most people didn't have college and were happy to be the Police. It was a different job and now the job has become unrealistic. Now no one likes the police. I too will be gone in June.

Definitely tracks what I’m seeing among coppers in their 50s that I know. Even some younger guys who had kids in their early 20s are planning to bail as soon as the kids graduate from college.

"Looks like many are bailing out as close to the 25 year step raise and as near to 55 as they can."

This should come as no surprise. Once the city offered health care at 55, more people had incentive to leave.

That was part of a bigger plan to rid CPD of old timers & install young, dumb robots.

Not sure what the rest of the plan is.

Hahaha! I remember when I came on the job in OCT 95. Man every swinging dick stayed 30+ years. 63 and out. Dt division especially. I was smart. I saw the writing on the wall within three years of being hired. I saw two guys about to be fired and they had no plan B; this was it for them and they were in a panic. They stayed on job and are both still working today. I made it a point to start a home inspection business and work it to death. Now I have 8 employees and retired with 20 yrs before age 50. I currently live in Costa Rica and watch the circus from abroad. I don't have any idea why anyone would stay longer than they have to.

Just some math guys and basic math BTW. Once you hit 20 years you now start working for 1/2 price so to speak. Once you max out you moreless work for peanuts. I just don't get why anyone in today's world would stay on the job past 29 and a day. I often heard guys say "I'd get bored and start drinking heavily. I'll have nothing to do all day." Guys, I'm 49 and will be 50 in June and have been living in Costa Rica for 6 months and let me tell you with your house paid for, no debt, car paid for, you can live here on your pension of 25 years as a P.O.. If you made SGT it's even easier. There is like zero crime where I live and it's 85 degrees almost everyday. I know, I get it. You love your snowblower and designer boots and leather gloves compared to my sloppy tank tops and flip flops.

I never hear gun shots or hear of robberies here. Sure there are petty thefts but zero car jackings, no police chases and no burglaries, no rapes or murders. I lived in Beverly for 15 years; cops everywhere and still heard shootings from east end all the time. I worked in 022. No thanks. Never happens here. No mass shootings anywhere, lol.

I'm never bored and I don't drink at all, lol. I'm busy everyday and I do mean everyday. There is so much to do here. At first I thought I made a mistake but after two months, there is zero chance of me coming back. In June I will formally file for my pension. I'm not bragging about it, just conveying facts. I try to motivate others to think outside the box. I'm just telling those of you who are on the fence that you can quit the job and have a life after CPD at a young age, lol.

Sure my business made things easier but aside from that I could still live on my pension if I did not live in the development I live in now. It's high end and it's like living on vacation but I could swing a smaller place nearby and not pay what I am paying now. My biz may be in the crapper tomorrow so I have a plan B! If your home is paid for and you can sell it for $200K or more you can live like a king here on your pension.

Most of you guys don't plan for tomorrow. I'd speak with a lot of coppers and ask about planning, future, investments, etc and it was like speaking in VooDoo. Complete taboo talking about tomorrow. I learned to stop trying to motivate guys as it was pointless and quite frankly probably still is. So many think 1st and 15th and age 63.

New guys: plan for a plan B. Start a side business. Do something productive post CPD.
Retirees: If you have the time then go. So tired of hearing the "grandkid" story already. Guess what? They have airplanes! Amazing machines! I fly on them and can fly back to Chicago when ever I want. Life is too short and you don't need to waste it on the job and living in Chicago.

They have medical and dental here too!

I did 33 and got out at 59yo. I should have gotten out earlier but a unit with unlimited OT kept me in. To be honest it wasn't worth it but at least I saved the money instead of rolling in a new Cadillac. Anyway I'll take 78yo with my blood pressure. But one thing Ive noticed is nowadays more cops marry other cops, and thats great. You can retire early and get two pensions coming in. Look at Ed Head, he'll get that BIG pension and some sweet gig where you dummies raise HIM his salary so he can show up at a few events and look smart.

So he's at $300 k and by then Momma will be a Deputy at least bringing home that pension.

Shit if I was a young guy on the job I'd hook up with one of the Lovely Ladies we have coming on and marry her. By 55yo you'll be sailing the Caribbean and if one of you are juiced in you'll own the yacht.

I know they made some pension changes for new hires already I believe it’s minimum age to retire 55 minimum years 25. If they were smart they would encourage older guys to leave “buyout” and bring in more younger guys. They should do 20 years and 50 % salary max. It would mean less disgruntled officers less lawsuits less problems all the way around. Also it would mean less pension obligation. Allow officers to test with five years on for Sergeant or Detective. Rank in order of score. (No study groups no merit). Determine minimum numbers for each position. When people leave ie retire, quit, injury or death then promote more from same list. Once you take a promotion you’re required to stay in position for five years minimum. Detectives test for Detective Sergeant. Patrol Seargeants tests for Lieutenant of patrol. Captains of every district and area. Chiefs where needed otherwise get rid of all the Deputy Chiefs, Assistant Deputy Chifes etc. Streamline line management. It’s extremely redundant. I digress, this is Chicago and Chicago ain’t ready for reform!!!

55 and out...Is the New 29 and a day! The Goal is to get more years out of the pension then the years you put into this Career. Your closer to the end then you think. When you are laying there on your Death Bed do you think that you are going to be saying to your Family bring me my Bank statements, my Deferred Comp Statements and my T&A card to see how many hours I have the books, NO you are going to wish you had created more MEMORIES with the people you LOVE. Your FAMILY appreciates you and needs you more then what this Job does. ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT YOU WORK TO LIVE! NOT LIVE TO WORK!

I left at 58 and if I had stayed to 60, I would have been eligible for my health insurance to be paid, I believe in full or at 55 %, until I ht Medicare age. I opted to leave without that benefit because one only has one life to live. Two years of not being a cop was worth the sacrifice. Retire as SOON as you can and be FETAL until that day.

Ahh yes retirement, but what, what is this now?

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-met-chicago-cop-decades-old-rape-allegations-20180202-story.html

Excerpt:
Then Trina “Kim” Townsend, 50, walked to the microphone and asked permission to read her statement into the record. In a steady voice, she publicly shared details of a secret she said she had closely guarded for the most part for three decades.

As the hushed crowd of about 50 residents and police officers looked on, Townsend accused a now-retired Chicago cop by name of repeatedly raping her over several years after she had turned to him for help because she was already being molested by a family member.

He “sexually assaulted me on a near monthly basis,” she said. “He was always on duty. He was always in the patrol car. Always in uniform. And he always took me to the same area.”
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Sorry 30 years ago the money-train ghetto lottery has passed!

Then "googleme" throws this 1 in:
As a result of Townsend’s public accusations, the Police Department’s Bureau of Internal Affairs has launched a criminal investigation, said spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, though any legal avenues would seem closed because of the passage of time and the statute of limitations.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

now IAD is launching criminal investigations where they have zero authority? The legal avenues are closed right googleme? Statue of limitations, this girl waited 30 years? who coached her? was it true or not,and if true was it consensual? You retire and they

"Looks like many are bailing out as close to the 25 year step raise..."

Too bad it does them little to no good if their intention is to boost their pension payment. Best 4 of the last 10 years. Which means they'd have to stay for 29 years to reap a barely noticeable increase. Those that had enough foresight to plan and save for life post-CPD will be coming to work for pennies on the dollar staying past age 55.

The ONLY reason to stay past max time OTJ is the (as for now) 2% healthcare premium. And hopefully FLOP has their eyes on the prize regarding this huge issue. Take a look at your pension statement to see just how little sense it makes to stay past the age of 55**.

** WARNING! May NOT apply to the following nincompoops:

- degenerate gamblers
- shopaholics
- poor savers
- those with babies with multiple Baby Mamas
- those twice or thrice divorced
- those who treated their home equity like a piggy bank
- those who rely on Special Emp & OT to live check-to-check
- those whose car payments eclipse their rent or mortgage nuts

Hell yeah- everyone is getting the fuck out asap. And it is no coincidence in this era of the anti-police bullshit and the shyster politicians that gladly join the chorus of joyful haters. The city will soon only have 3 types of candidates to choose from in the very near future : the desperate, the connected, and the criminal. They are quickly eliminating the fourth type of candidate, the diligently competent, as most of the people that fall into this category serve no political or optical agenda. Even now, half the roll call can barely speak/write the English language at the 8th grade level, one quarter nobody wants to work with because they are unsafe/unkempt/unreliable, and the last quarter is split between those texting their chinamen during roll call and those looking to steal their phones.

Right now I’m looking forward to turning 50 so I can get the hell out of here.

Chicago and Cook County has become unlivable for decent middle class people. Illinois has some beautiful areas outside the metro area; however, Chicago corruption has affected taxes and ruined this state. Many people like me are just trying to get to 20 years to get the minimum pension, then look for another job to make up the difference. CPD was definitely a job I thought I would stay 30 years with, but it has just become such a miserable place to work. The corruption (merit) in the department, and working day after day in the ghetto has taken a toll on myself and many fellow officers I talk to every day. The high taxes and high crime moving to the last of the decent neighborhoods is driving people out. Rarely do I ever hear anyone talking anymore about sticking around on this job and in this city into their 60's. Law and order is not the priority of our SJW Sheriff and S.A. The mayor and exempts will throw anyone under the bus in a heartbeat to help themselves (make no mistake about that!) Thank you Democrats for literally destroying this county and city, and taking the rest of the state down with you!

Mr Costa Rica:
If you are telling the truth good for you but you must not have any kids or be close to them at any rate and my guess is you never really enjoyed this job to begin with. You have got to be kidding when you say take an airplane to visit your grandkids. I retired at 56 with 30 years on. We babysit one one grandchild 4 days a week and I help my son coach his son in football the same way I coached my son. Life is good here cold weather, crime and all. We've talked about going to Arizona for a month or two in the winter but that's about it. You can go live by yourself in Costa Rica.

Dumb statement. Not everyone wants out

Actually kid, anyone with a brain and more than 2 min on this god forsaken job wants out. You have no idea how fun it was when we actually were allowed to be the police. There were under 400 murders a year and people respected us for the most part. I know your only idea of police work is what you see on “live pd” with the outside vests and khaki pants and every single move you make is on camera. THATS NOT POLICE WORK. The kids on tac in today’s world think skinny jeans and a backwards hat along with a molle vest cover is what constitutes “plain clothes”. Kids, you don’t have to copy everything you see on “live pd” and “Chicago pd”. Oh well, they’ll never get it. Just like the fact that they will never know real Chicago police work.

depends on how many years on the job you have.
if you're maxed out & hitting deferred comp pretty hard, you're losing money coming to work

And if you subtract YOJ from Retirement Age along the years covered, you'll find that the average age of a recruit increases from ~28 to ~30. Discuss.

Under 400 murders a year. You mean like in 1974 when there were 970 or 1994 when there were 937. Could c go on for a few decades where you did your “police work” and were the real police. Over 900 murders and most of the years were over 800 and others over 700.
You have no idea what you are talking about.

I hope this is a joke.I feel sad when i hear coppers pass away a year into retirement because they went to 63 with 30+. You suffered all those years otj and you will be letting the city off the hook for a measly year of pension checks.Doesnt seem fair like the city is getting off easy. But i guess thats more money for me when i dip out at 20-25 years otj.The ultimate payback is 20 or 30 years of pension checks.

Then get used to the idea of staying till 60. If you think that they won't raise the percentage then you are the fool. Question now is, do you want to retire and pay 2% or gamble and wait and pay 3%, 4%, 5%...........?

If there are financial incentives to stick around to a certain age and/or years of service, it would make a lot of sense that employees would tend to meet just those criteria before retiring. Maybe an unintentional side effect of the retirement system. These days retirees have a lot more knowledge of what is in their own best financial interest than what they once did.

Once you max out you moreless work for peanuts.

Not true.

While it's true that we max out at 75%, if you stay you will still get pay raises.

So let's say at 29 and a day you are making $95,000. You would get a $71,250 pension.

If you stayed 1 more year and in that year you were eligible for a 1% raise ($95,950) your pension would be $71,962.50. That's an increase of $712.50 a year.

The longer you stay, the more money you get. You just have to ask yourself if it would be worth it.

A story thousands of time of coppers in all PDs staying on well past time to pull the pin, and dying not long after either being forced out or unable to just get up and move. It is usually those coppers that are afraid of life without the star, and never planning for a future outside the womb. In any event agencies love that it is less money paid out in pensions.

Sure that is based on people with normal jobs. We have crazy hours, eat shit food , carry 20 pounds of equipment while sitting in a car for hours. Deal with more people with diseases then a hospital and see shit that will screw up ur mind. Hey bartender, give me another shot...

You forget that when you retire you automatically get a 4.95% raise because your pension is not subject to Illinois state income tax. Plus you are no longer paying into the pension. And if you qualify for the free medical you are no longer paying for that.

Very true but you forgot to mention the pension is based on the average of the last four years. For every year you stay you take off the4th year and add the new year of hire pay. Officer I worked with stayed 2 more years than me (we were both maxed out) and when he retired made quite a bit more initionally but now that we are both getting COLA he gets a larger COLA every year so the pension gap gets wider every year

2/08/2018 12:53:00 AM

You are right about most people not having college, but now the ones coming on have degrees in criminal justice, communications , general studies literature, political science. If you have a good degree as engineering, business even a lawyer your degree loses its value every year you are on the CPD. Take business for example. Who wants to hire a 45 or 50 year old with no experience in the business world. Those 25 years were when you made contacts, got promotes, rose theu the ranks and networked. You might be able to get an entert level job. Same for engineering those 25 years were when you gained experience, built your portfolio got promotions. You think at 50 you are going to get involved in a building project after not doing one in over 25 years. Dream on

Don’t get carried away with yourself and the job. I want to give you some cheese with your whine. First work crazy hours we work steady shifts and when you get older and get seniority you can work days Hospital employees, building engineers , cab drivers, hotel workers, the list goes on of people that work on three different shifts for less money. Eat shit food? Who’s fault is that. There are restaurant and I know if you work in a bad district no restaurants to eat in, but with seniority you don’t have to be in a shit district that’s your choice or bring your lunch like a lot of people in private industry. Sitting in a car for hours , you mean like cross country drivers that do it 16 hours a day and work shitty hours. Carry 20 lbs maybe if you are a scuba diver on the marine unit and you diving a few times a month and your last one is ridiculous Deal with more diseased people than hospitals. So everyone you deal with is diseased because that is the case for hospital employees
And see things that will screw you up like DCFS workers who see abused children EVERY DAY or coroners investigators or drug counselors or orderlies that work with psychos or junkies
Whine to your neighbors who believe the stuff you are telling them

Listen to his bullshit and the look on our pension website. The guy is making excuses and living in the past. We have like 4 retirees in their 100’s. A group in their 90’s, hundreds and hundreds in their 80’s and 70’s

I’ll settle the argument of age of CPD retirees. FACTS taken from page 42 of Chicago police pension fund report. Even with the shit food, sitting in cars all day, dealing with diseased people, bad hours and seeing bad things we have approx 2,000 that’s right 2,000 men and women CPD retirees 80 years and older. Probably. 4000 in their 70’’s.

You forget having the 2 years of freedom between your retirement date and his retirement date.

Yes, the 2 years are done and gone and are easy to forget.

But, what value would you place on those 2 years?

By using your yardstick, we know the yearly dollar value by subtracting your pension from his pension and it will add up year after year while you are both alive. You may never know the exact total dollar amount he gained by staying versus your income, but it is not all about the skins. If you both were to die on the same day, you had two more years, while he had a bit more in the monthly check. It depends on which of the two you assign more value.

It is very, very important to stay active when you retire in your 50s. Sadly, many coppers look no further into what they will do in retirement than their next paycheck.

Is the thought of looming retirement and availability of Social Security killing you? Two researchers say yes.

Maria D. Fitzpatrick of Cornell University and Timothy J. Moore of the University of Melbourne said they analyzed the mortality rates in the U.S. and noticed that many older Americans – but disproportionally men who retire at 62 – are affected by sudden increased rates of death.

“A lot happens in our early 60s. Some change jobs, scale back working hours or retire. Our health-care coverage may shift. We may have fewer financial resources, or we may begin collecting Social Security," Fitzpatrick told The Wall Street Journal. “About one-third of Americans immediately claim Social Security at 62. Ten percent of men retire in the month they turn 62.”

The numbers, according to the study, show that there is a two percent increase in male mortality at age 62 in the country. “Over the 34 years we studied, there were an additional 400 to 800 deaths per year beyond what we expected, or an additional 13,000 to 27,000 excess male deaths within 12 months of turning 62,” the professor said.
The researcher blames the increased mortality on the retirement as retirees tend to withdraw from life and no longer see the point in engaging.
“Retirement could have positive long-run benefits for your health because you’re taking better care of yourself. Or it could be that, in the long run, retirement has a negative effect. You can think of how a retiree slowly withdraws from the world because he no longer has any reason to engage,” she told the WSJ.
After all, the retirement brings new risks into life: “If you don’t go to work, you have more hours of the day to be driving around,” the professor said.
“Medical literature suggests when older men are more sedentary, they’re more likely to be at risk for infection. When they lose their jobs, they increase their smoking rate, linked to the types of deaths we see such as COPD [chronic obstructive pulmonary disease] or respiratory illness.”
The bottom line, says Fitzpatrick, is that the retirement “may be bad for the health of men, particularly for men who retire at the relatively early age of 62.”
While she is not advising people against not retiring, especially if their health is poor, people should take precautions and commit to fairly active yet stress-free lifestyle.
“Stay healthy, see a physician, don’t just sit on the couch, but don’t overdo it either. Be careful about driving. Just be careful. It is a tricky time,” she said.

Sorry to hear that they gave you such a hard time. I on the other hand found it easier the last few years and was treated well Most if not all the bosses respected seniority because they to were older. If a P.O. did his job they left you alone and I can honestly say and I am not a fan of most bosses but I have never seen them mess with a guy because of his age and never tried to force any out. But then again I didn’t really pay to much attention to it because they and I knew I was in the KMA and if things got bad and they harassed me I could go on medical for a year and then retire. All they would be doing is giving me an extra year of retirement at full pay and an extra 2% for the year on the nedical
