Near Darwin Award

  • An 18-year-old man was critically injured Friday night after he stuck his head out of a moving CTA Red Line train and hit a pole on the South Side.

The man was on a southbound train at 9:37 p.m. when he hit his head on a pole near the Sox-35th stop at 142 W. 35th St., according to Chicago Police.

Paramedics took him to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was being treated for a fractured skull, police said. He was in critical condition.
Any bets on whether someone sues the CTA for having unattended conductor windows?

They used to have two CTA employees on a train. The guy in the booth, and the one who took care of the doors. Didn’t the super high tech cameras deter this rocket scientist from doing something so wrong?

LOL... I swear if this crap hadn't happened, no one would believe it could. Fucking ridiculous.... Better have those assault poles removed. Maybe ban them for good measure.

That’s sure to leave a mark.

They’ll sue the CTA for having a post in the way when some oxygen thief sticks their head out the window.

So, he'd be a 'teen' if shot by the police, but he's a 'man' when he sticks his own head out of a moving train?

How could this of happened seeing the trains that run on the red line are the 5000 series built without conductor windows;there are seats and regular windows there. Was he between the cars? Was he in the hobo corner where there is a small window for the train operator? That window is supposed to be locked.Stupid is as Stupid does.

He is 18 years old he has a so-called man stupid man Albeit But still a so-called man I want to what his arrest record was or is hopefully this helps him to rethink any type of criminal past this may have cure him of his criminal intentions!

Probably just an Amish "yute" coming into the City and wanting to smell the fresh air. At least on a positive note, the CTA will save some time and money by not having to scrape the pole next time they need to repaint it.

The founding fathers only deemed these poles to be necessary for a "well-regulated militia" and nothing more. It's the lobbying by the National Pole Association that allows for the rampant spread of these dangerous poles.

It’s called the turnstile jump Holla-Back syndrome... a shout-out last word to someone, likely a foe, left standing behind.
I think a similar event happened before on the south side couple years ago with a thug trying to drive by shoot.

Opening a window in traffic, mmm-mm-mmm.
CTA used to have little stickers, then metal plates affixed warning not to do so, as does the festive Six Flags Great America.
Interesting enough, they put braile warning and info plaques on buses, trains and stations and never a blind person had any problems.

Wonder if CPS will be party to the Lowvey & Lowvey Personal Injury Division summons.
Can’t blame it fully on the sparse MTU...yet.

Old Retired Guy Here. I would like to comment on this issue. To the best of my understanding, this is what CTA Policy once was. One conductor per every three cars. The conductor would collect fares for passengers that boarded at locations that where unattended by fare takers. I understand that current tech has make the fare taking process obsolete. Why can't every train have one conductor assigned 24/7? The conductor would be equipped with a radio, that he/she could instantly notify Police/Fire of an emergency. The Police/Fire could respond to the next stop. The conductor's duties would be to walk the train cars and monitor issues. Too simple?
Hey, Bottom Line Is: Nobody Care's

Look for a 6 figure payout because there was no warning that you could get hurt if you stick your head out of a train. Idiots.
