Near Darwin Award
- An 18-year-old man was critically injured Friday night after he stuck his head out of a moving CTA Red Line train and hit a pole on the South Side.
The man was on a southbound train at 9:37 p.m. when he hit his head on a pole near the Sox-35th stop at 142 W. 35th St., according to Chicago Police.
Paramedics took him to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was being treated for a fractured skull, police said. He was in critical condition.
Any bets on whether someone sues the CTA for having unattended conductor windows?

They used to have two CTA employees on a train. The guy in the booth, and the one who took care of the doors. Didn’t the super high tech cameras deter this rocket scientist from doing something so wrong?
Is the pole OK?
LOL... I swear if this crap hadn't happened, no one would believe it could. Fucking ridiculous.... Better have those assault poles removed. Maybe ban them for good measure.
That’s sure to leave a mark.
They’ll sue the CTA for having a post in the way when some oxygen thief sticks their head out the window.
So, he'd be a 'teen' if shot by the police, but he's a 'man' when he sticks his own head out of a moving train?
I seen the same going on over in India quite a bit.. however the Indians are not about dropping 200k in medical bills for a useless person who will back to doing this later on
Hahahaha........
Maybe he thought he was a dog.
Now, kees me you fool!!!!
Any way to add more windows that open?
Was his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth like my dog does hanging his head out the window?????
How could this of happened seeing the trains that run on the red line are the 5000 series built without conductor windows;there are seats and regular windows there. Was he between the cars? Was he in the hobo corner where there is a small window for the train operator? That window is supposed to be locked.Stupid is as Stupid does.

BAN ALL LIGHT POLES
Someone should’ve gave him the heads up.
is the lightpole ok?
he was only practicing for the next gangbanger funeral.
There has to be a video of this if anybody inside can post that that would be hilarious Just shows the stupidity of some people as the old saying goes you can’t fix stupid or this guy was stuck on stupid why would he take him to the Children’s Hospital? He is 18 years old he has a so-called man stupid man Albeit But still a so-called man I want to what his arrest record was or is hopefully this helps him to rethink any type of criminal past this may have cure him of his criminal intentions!
Damn, only 18 and already working on his 'Bucket List.'
----- #10; Stick my head out of a speeding El Train Window. (lol)
btw, I wonder which made the louder noise? His hollow head or the hollow pole? Boing!
(rotflmao)
Probably just an Amish "yute" coming into the City and wanting to smell the fresh air. At least on a positive note, the CTA will save some time and money by not having to scrape the pole next time they need to repaint it.
I feel sorry for the CTA employe who had to wash down the pole
They should release the video as a training video for these nit wits.
The founding fathers only deemed these poles to be necessary for a "well-regulated militia" and nothing more. It's the lobbying by the National Pole Association that allows for the rampant spread of these dangerous poles.
He certainly needs to be in the running for the Darwin Award.
I’ll bet he has one helluva headache about now.
It’s called the turnstile jump Holla-Back syndrome... a shout-out last word to someone, likely a foe, left standing behind.
I think a similar event happened before on the south side couple years ago with a thug trying to drive by shoot.
Opening a window in traffic, mmm-mm-mmm.
CTA used to have little stickers, then metal plates affixed warning not to do so, as does the festive Six Flags Great America.
Interesting enough, they put braile warning and info plaques on buses, trains and stations and never a blind person had any problems.
Wonder if CPS will be party to the Lowvey & Lowvey Personal Injury Division summons.
Can’t blame it fully on the sparse MTU...yet.
Old Retired Guy Here. I would like to comment on this issue. To the best of my understanding, this is what CTA Policy once was. One conductor per every three cars. The conductor would collect fares for passengers that boarded at locations that where unattended by fare takers. I understand that current tech has make the fare taking process obsolete. Why can't every train have one conductor assigned 24/7? The conductor would be equipped with a radio, that he/she could instantly notify Police/Fire of an emergency. The Police/Fire could respond to the next stop. The conductor's duties would be to walk the train cars and monitor issues. Too simple?
Hey, Bottom Line Is: Nobody Care's
Is it wrong to savor what it might have sounded like?
Thank you for posting this story here. Otherwise, I would not have seen it. I needed a chuckle today.
Look for a 6 figure payout because there was no warning that you could get hurt if you stick your head out of a train. Idiots.

This is good to see COPA slapped down.
Probably a Sox fan
Was there any damage to the pole?
He was trying to turn his life around! He started with his head.
One of my former CPS student no doubt.
Ex-teacher
Clearly the time has come for sensible pole reform.
Sadly, this isn’t fake news.
Is this from the Onion ? Are you sure it was a Pole and not a Lithuanian ? Did he lose all his teef ?
Just axin
Probably will also sue the Public School System for his inability to read the CTA sign which we all have seen and understood, "DO NOT STICK HEAD OR ARMS OUT OF THE WINDOWS".
Well, there are accidents and then, there's this accident.
Probably no high school graduation picture available, is there?
J.J.
I've seen shitheads open those conductor windows and smoke cigarettes, holding it outside and blowing the smoke out of the window. It still stinks up there entire train car.
The article says he was in critical condition. Was he critical before or after the incident?
He'll be fine. There are no vital organs above the shoulders.
Was he making like a train horn at that moment?
...WOOONK! WOOONK! WOOONK! OOOUCH!
So the CTA is liable?...
The pole will sue the little shit cause it got hit by that little shits nugget and caused PTSD ( Pole Terminal Shock Disorder ) due to the lil nuggets infliction of damage.
