Off Duty Mugged Downtown (UPDATE!)

  • An off-duty Chicago police officer was hit with a bottle and robbed in the Near North neighborhood this weekend. Not far away, a Loop resident was mugged as she entered her high-rise residential building. The incidents are the latest in a violent crime surge that shows no signs of slowing down in the two neighborhoods.

Around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, a group of at least three men approached a 24-year-old off-duty officer in the 600 block of North Wells. A bottle was thrown at the man's face and he was robbed of his phone and personal items, according to the police department. The department did not identify the man as an off-duty officer, but his position was confirmed by a police source. Descriptions of the offenders were not offered by the department.
No descriptions? How can that be? But here's the disturbing trend that blogs are covering, but not the Department:
  • Robberies in the Near North neighborhood are up 50% so far this year compared to the same time period in 2017. There were 45 hold-ups reported in the area through February 23 this year compared to 30 during the same timeframe last year and just 15 in 2014.

CWBChicago has been closely watching the Loop’s robbery rate since last winter.

So far this year, Loop muggings are up 106% compared to last year. Sixty-four robberies were reported through February 23, up from 31 during the same time period last year. Compared to 2014’s 13 muggings, incidents are up 80% in the Loop.
Even the police aren't immune to crime, so guess who might be even more vulnerable?

UPDATE from the BWC Blog authors:
  • We inaccurately wrote that "Compared to 2014’s 13 muggings, incidents are up 80% in the Loop." That's wrong. We have now corrected our story with the corrected version" Compared to 2014’s 13 muggings, incidents are up 392% in the Loop."
An almost 400% increase in Loop muggings - time for Special Ed to resign, and take the mayor with you.

So funny how the media always seems to post the race when it's a white cop and black offender (I mean "victim"). I still don't get the liberal agenda when it comes to race reporting. When is the police department going to adopt the same standards as the media?

The solution is, there is no solution, as long as these radical left wing democrats run this city. I miss going downtown to the restaurants, theater etc. Now I go to the northern suburbs, there is free parking and I don't have to lug the gun around if I don't want to. There are plenty of things to do up there.

Alderman Riley seems entirely disinterested in the quality-of-life issues in his ward that affect his residential constituents. I think he serves Northwestern's real estate operational demands, and that's it. The current crime-rate in Streeterville/North Michigan Avenue is inexcusable, and Riley largely absenting himself from actively seeking solutions. He allows retailers to play sidewalk music at all hours, even on predominantly-residential streets. He claims he was unable to prevent the issuance of a liquor-license for another high-volume big-crowd bar in North Pier, claiming his advocacy was "ignored" by Liquor Commissioner and City Hall. He's unresponsive to residents' complaints about routinely double-parked cars and trucks, blocked streets, clogged traffic, collapsed street pavement and pot-holes, poorly-maintained sidewalks, and restaurant-related trash problems.

I am a black man in Chicago, law abiding, working since 17. This is the way I describe the crime now. I consider myself streetwise and the several things I do, never let anyone use my cell phone, your ass is lost, contact the cops or go to the nearest station. If I see two or more young black men walking near me, I cross the street and attempt to enter a building. This is out of hand.

Nothing left to steal in the neighborhoods so the criminals and dope fiends have gone to the Near North, Loop, and Gold Coast. The city is already doomed. Would ask the last resident left to turn off the lights on the way out to somewhere else but the thieves will already have stolen those too. Sad.

I guess I am too old, but in the early 1970s I could walk by myself all around the near north side and Gold Coast after midnight or with friends and not even thinking it was dangerous.

Just want to share a few memories. I am 74 years old living in Montana. As a teenage I went to school in the loop. My father was a cop. I remember seeing undercover cops arrest bad guys on the trains and in the stations. I lived in Rogerspark and took the Howard train 5 days a week. These guys dressed like bums and were good actors. Why can't PD have decoys on the trains and stations anymore? It worked.

Afraid or don't know how to be the police, to the point now where coppers can't even walk around off duty in the best parts of the city unmolested. What kind of a half-assed police dept. has the CPD digressed down to these days?

Michael...my dear late father JD was one of the decoys you speak of. Yes it worked. And the decoys were always unarmed, relying on their backup crew to protect them. Civilians were relieved knowing the decoys were out there.

Yes, it did work. And, it could work again, but they are concerned about not getting 25% Caucasian offenders, 25% Black offenders, 25% Hispanic/Latino offenders and 25% Asian offenders. The numbers will be lopsided to one segment and the ACLU will scream there are not enough of the other three groups. Also, when an arrest does occur, the liberal State's Attorney and the liberal Cook County judges will just let the little felons go free to study for their ACT and/or SAT exams.

It is not just here. It is everywhere, but a little more in Chicago. The days of nonchalantly, mindlessly ambling along are way gone. Hardening your personal target(s) and having your head on a swivel without paranoia is the best way to decrease your chances of being victimized.

A senior citizen ,70 year old man, was beat and robbed downtown ,CTA property . All captured on camera . It looked like a hate crime to me , but no descriptions given . Vote rammie the commie and his cameras out in 2019 . Chicago deserves police protection , not videos of women getting groped , pushed down stairs , men beaten by these animals . Most are in crook county court system and now out on parole or probation . Ballerina brags about shot spotters , license plate readers . Hello ,no chase policy kids shot everyday , thank the lord some new technology r3vords that shot . Has one case report been completed or incident followed up by detectives regarding the shot spotter .
No , that would cause crimes being reported and crime going up . Release the number of shots fired everyday and what neighborhood the shots are being recorded . Jefferson Park doesn’t deserve a shot spotter , to the Mayor white lives don’t matter .

How come nothing about Illinois House Bill HB 1469

HB 1469 – Amendment 1 Bans the sale, purchase, transfer or possession of any gun magazine over 10 rounds and the use of body armor (applies to all gun owners; even retired law enforcement or military veterans). Use of body armor in the commission of a crime is already illegal. This bill criminalizes the lawful possession of body armor – used by Range Safety Officers, Security and Armored Car personnel, convenience store clerks who have a high expectation of robbery, EMT’s going into bad neighborhoods, and on and on. A ban on possession means confiscation of every >10 round magazine – rifle or pistol.

HB1469, grease on the slippery slope for outright confiscation. Democrats, if allowed, will pass laws requiring guns be turned in or confiscated.
I believe most Police Officers swear an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution, the state constitution and local laws and ordinances. The Police also know the pecking order, federal, state, local.
Now the democrats, (who started the War On Police), can pass their gun confiscation laws, but who do they think will enforce it?

Now there is the crux of it.

If, or when, enforcement of this blatantly, californian style tomfoolery is attempted, by any sworn to uphold our nation's Constitution, then we shall see the true nature of each individual sworn to protect.

Granted, there will be some to whom personal benefit clearly holds more value than the oath to protect and preserve our nation's Constitution.

It will be what those who value that oath do that will tell the tale.

As always, here within the belly of the beast, invisibility is most effective, with inaudibility as a presumed twin.

Be the Shadow.
