And It Begins....

  • Dozens of potential jurors are scheduled to show up at the Leighton Criminal Court Building on Wednesday as the long-awaited trial of Chicago police Officer Jason Van Dyke gets underway, at least in a preliminary way.

Protesters may be out in force outside the courthouse at 26th Street and California Avenue for what could be an anticlimactic first day as the only scheduled business involves the potential jurors filling out a questionnaire in private in advance of jury selection starting up Monday in earnest.

No one knows for sure, but jury selection could take at least a week, perhaps far longer. Judge Vincent Gaughan plans to interview each potential juror individually.
MLB Playoffs start 02 October, and guess who's in the thick of it again? Even two weeks of jury selection pushes the trial right into the middle of it. If it lasts three-to-five weeks, it bumps up against the end of the Championship Series and the beginning of the World Series. Has any of this been taken into consideration? Because we haven't seen word one on a plan.

Twas the night before Chaos

And all thru the city

The parts not so nice

And the ones oh so pretty

Where the critters be lurking

And the snobs all be smirking

As the moment draws near

With a bit of the fear

Of what might be the worst

With a bang and a burst

Yet, when morning arrives

Most will still be alive

And the streets will remain

As they are just the same

And to the idiots that say our city will fall by the wayside without Rahm tying up power, and everyone falling in line. Have you witnessed the tragedy of what our city has become over the last 7 years? Get your head out of your ass.

It’s a new day in Chicago. Just don’t let Arne Duncan, Luis G or any one of the morons Rahm is tied to be elected.

Fuck you, Rahm.

Jury selection will be lucky to be finished in 3 weeks.

Talk about being spread thin-

3 sides to the city:
North Side- World Series
West Side- Rioting
South Side- Rioting

Anyone who was around for the last World Series knows that we had all hands on deck for that thing- even the districts were on extended shifts and days off cancelled.
I can’t even imagine the kind of fuckery this city would pull if there is civil unrest in 2/3 of the city at the same time as a World Series.
God help us.

In thinking about how the whole JVD thing went down— Rham would not had even been in this situation if he would had tossed JVD under the bus as soon as he could— but he did not have the right people with balls leading the police department... a bunch of yes men who would pass the torch on to people to make a decision. But in the end he set that up, and made his bed. I would love to hear what Escalante would say... but he is busy policing college kids, making sure the did the their homework. McBooze is too drunk to have an opinion. And Kidney Bean was setting up a surgery to remove his balls and insert a fresh kidney. Who can soundly say these fools know how to lead a police department?

Reality maybe, this JVD thing could only occur under a knuckle head like Rham. Given the way CPD is, there is another incident waiting to explode. They next mayor should look for a person who is a sound leader... no yes men.

By the way, I bet my right kidney that Baby Bean goes to a unit, the gets promoted first chance he gets— to the day of his ability to get promoted

Ah yes. Jury selection. Retired now, but was summoned for jury duty several years back, and couldn’t talk my way out of it. Got as far into the process as the questioning of potential jurors before Judge Nicholas Ford at 26 th & cal. Case involved felony UUW arrest by Tact Officers from a south side district. I had testified several times before him, so he was aware of who I was. I also knew several of the assigned ASA’s. Questioning progressed to the potential juror seated to my left who proclaimed she hated the police who put a gun on her brother. I was the next potential juror up and Judge Ford looked at me and with a straight face said well Mr. K, tell us about your self and whether you are familiar with anyone in this courtroom, and whether you can be unbiased in this case. I tried not to laugh as I said my name, identified myself as a police lieutenant, and admitted I knew him, the first chair, and one of the police officers. He kept a straight face and asked the state if they had any objections to my being on the jury, and they said no. Surprisingly the defense didn’t agree, and rules me out for some strange reason, even though I promised to be impartial. Unfortunately, in the present political climate, an active duty supervisor would never get that far into the process, especially ina heater case.

Does anyone find it strange that there has been no preparation for the upcoming trial starting tomorrow? Best we get is an email informing us that we were trained in field force tactics 5 years ago and to have our gear ready, what gear? helmet and baton is all we have.
No pepperball or anything like that, certs have expired as well as the equipment, rumor has it Swat was asleep at the switch again and have no capability to dispense pepper spray. Hell they even ran out of targets as none of the guys trying out can get any to practice on.
If we were trained in field force 5 years ago how does the new order and use of force apply when in these situations? We are so unprepared it is beyond a joke.

No: Denied: Stall tactic? They can go through the process of jury selection then request a bench trial. I'm also thinking that by interviewing the jury it will show that everyone has heard about the trail and it might help another plea for change of venue.

I too, am a retired police officer, spent some time in homicide and retired a lieutenant. I was called for jury selection on a murder case. The judge was a former ASA and recognized me for sure, but said nothing. The prosecution wanted me on the jury, but the defense objected. You would think it would be the other way around, but cops can see through the defense smoke screen. I pray for Van Dyke, not only for his soul, but for his physical and mental well being.

The city is preparing they have told all units in OCD not to expect a day off until after the election. Tact teams, sat,Gina and gang teams are getting days off cancelled and all had to have an “inspection” of riot control equipment. There was a test run to mobilize the incident cars in all districts. It’s better than nothing but they have a small force that could be assembled in 2 hrs notice

I'm not sure jury selection will be entirely legit. Someone I know showed up for jury duty yesterday at 26th and Cal. They were told it would about a month sequestered at a local hotel. She is a suburban white girl in her early 20's. According to her, she was asked her date of birth, address and then released to go home. She said while she was there, every other white person was also released. Could it be that there was some "pre-screening" of the jury pool?

“Activists” have vowed to be present at courthouse “demanding” “justice”.
The media, politicians and these activists groups have put such their spin on this case that it’ll almost be impossible for VanDyke to get a fair, impartial trial.

That being said I see virtually no chance he’s convicted of First Degtee Murder...... that charge was political to try and placate “the community”.

You didn’t miss anything. A month ago judge Gaughan stated he wouldn’t rule on the change of venue motion until the jury selection began. Well it’s about to begin and why interview jurors in Cook County in the change of venue is granted and the trial moved outside of Cook County. My guess is the judge is going to deny the change of venue because he is picking a jury
If he was going to grant it, he would have ruled yesterday and there would be no need for a jury selection
Agree with you about the jury trial. Apparently he has already requested a jury trial or they wouldn’t be picking jurors. Only reasons I can see for a jury request is the lawyer is hoping for at least one juror holding out and refusing to convict and the second reason being lawyer doesn’t believe all 12 jurors will agree on a guilty verdict. A hung jury wouldn’t be the worse

Look at the last murder trial of on-duty CPD officers - the death occurred in July, 1980, the three cops involved were indicted for murder in late July, but the trial was delayed until December, 1981. One cop was acquitted, two were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, and there was no riot.

If VanDyke is going with a jury, he better spend plenty of money on an expert that aids in the selection of the jury.
