On Duty Suicide

For the second time this year, an on duty member has taken his own life:
  • A Chicago police sergeant found unresponsive in his squad car Monday afternoon in the West Loop apparently killed himself, police said.

The officer, a sergeant who was a supervisor in the mass transit unit, was found about 3:15 p.m. in the first block of North Desplaines Street, near Madison Street, according to police.
The numbers to EAP are in the right hand column of the blog under the Police Chaplains heading. We can't say enough good things about these people and the assistance they can provide.....if you make the call or someone makes it for you.

Prayers for the deceased, his family, friends and co-workers.

SCC, you hit the nail right on the head. Your health and well-being are far more important than anything this job can give you.

With that being said- there is at least 1 CPD who needed help, reached out, and got stripped because of it.
Obviously he/she was in a position and needed help, and it’s commendable recognizing that and reaching out to get it.
But now imagine dealing with whatever issues were already on the table, and now facing the financial hardship of being stripped, the stigma from your peers, and all the additional problems.
I know a lot of cops are nervous or afraid to ask for help, but it should definitely be a situation where they should never feel afraid to ask for the help they need. Something needs to be done about that, the potential cost is too great to make people afraid to reach out.

My condolences to all in his life. My prayers are with you in this unspeakable time.

Rahm and Ed made a climate where the Chicago Police has the highest suicides by cop in the nation. They talk about all the help when someone is thinking about taking their own life. But how about what got them there. Many people have problems outside of work but it doesn’t help when you are treated like shit by your employer. They are pissing on us and selling as it’s raining. I so hate this place. I can’t wait to get far from this shit hole. This job turned into shit.

There is a suicide epidemic in the Sheriff's office. Many linked to getting harrased by Dart and his cronies. There has been over 10 in last 7 yrs. Very sad complied with work stress and evil sadistic people running the departments.

The department disgusts me. I’ll read emails from the Superintendant regarding his “heavy heart,” and condolences, yet he obviously isn’t showing his regard for the mental health of his officers by cancelling their days off all summer. It has taken a HUGE emotional toll on my coworkers.

I’m not suggesting it contributed to this Sgt’s suicide, but consider this — our suicide rates far exceed the national average for the profession. There’s obviously something about working here for this city that is contributing to the problem. Can we not reasonably assume cancelling days off ,at best, is an inconvenience and at worst is inacting a tremendous burden on officers already physcologically broken.

I know there’s little sympathy for the clouted units where nearly every rdo is cancelled on SSC. Don’t they deserve time off? I’m also witnessing anger among the members of patrol who can’t even plan a fucking weekend around a holiday out of fear of being cancelled. It NEVER used to be like this.

Don’t forget too there’s the JVD trial and the Cubs in the playoffs. Another set of events to further strain officers and their families.

When you think things are so bad, and the best ay to ease the pain is to no longer be alive to deal with it......? You may be wrong.
The pain is very temporary, and what might seem insurmountable today, will be insignificant, looking back.
Short of a terminal illness that will cause much physical pain, nothing is worth ending it.
Your children, family and friends will be dealing with the enormous void and devastation left behind.

We all go through ups and downs.

No woman/man, money, age, or job is worth it.

Make a call.

Looking at your problems from a different t perspective can be the turning point.

How many of these cases involve a Chancery Court designed to humiliate and destroy men? The Job is stressful enough, but the pressures on your personal life are far, far less obvious, but just as bad or worse! Police Suicide rates, especially in an Agency and City as dysfunctional as Chicago are rising at an alarming rate. Do you think Rahm Cares? And as for the Court System; they let felons walk for Robbery in criminal court, and in Chancery Court, Judges readily take whatever you spent your whole life working two or three jobs to earn. It seems that every Chicago Copper and Cook County Deputy, may not know someone killed in the line of duty; but WE all know a colleague who took his or her own life. Stay Safe and Strong. Don't be afraid to ASK for HELP. Baby "G"

SCC, repost the section of the DOJ report that covered officer wellness. Take a look at the ratio of employee/psychologist and the comparisons with other departments. It’s a disgrace and continues to be. Then this idiot in charge of the department sends his message out that they are/have added a member (clinician, psychologist, or another wonderful and devoted officer) to EAP. He doesn’t get it and never will. Time to shift funding to EAP today. FOP step up, make noise, go block an expressway. We again are leading a nation in numbers that we want to stop it. FOP you can actually make a big difference with this, go after the clowns until the department is properly staffed with clinicians, psychologists, therapists etc. use the DOJ report as your guide.
God bless the officer and all the others we have lost. We can’t grow numb to this brothers and sisters.

FACT: The Chicago Police Department has an officer suicide rate 60 percent higher than the national average.

HELP: GOING THROUGH A TOUGH TIME? CALL EAP!
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a FREE and CONFIDENTIAL unit of the Chicago Police Department supporting all officers, their friends, and family members who may be in need. The professional counseling service offers assistance with depression, drugs, alcohol, or plain day-to-day issues we face doing our jobs. Many of our friends and family members suffer feelings of anxiety and loneliness. If someone you know needs help, please refer them to EAP where therapists are on call 24 hours a day. If they are contemplating suicide, don't keep it a secret, call: EAP - 312-743-0378.

FINALLY: IF you are feeling stress or are undergoing some tough times please know that you are not alone. Take advantage of our local help organizations that understand these challenges and have the dedication and ability to help you. While your friends, family and peers may not thoroughly understand what you are personally going through, know this...

Seriously, bretheren, if you are feeling that suicide might be the only option, Please reach out, and KNOW that there ARE other options. Police have a problem asking for help. Don't let that hold you back. Talk to your partner, wife, or call EAP. Don't leave a mess behind with no answers. Nothing on this job is so bad, that you need to take your life over.

It's a national disgrace how police officers have been vilified. The public needs to understand that PTSD is real and is not just something that the military suffer from. The police deal with violence, incompetent 'leadership', all the horrors that man can inflict on one another on a daily basis. They stand between us and chaos, yet the loony leftists and certain communities and their 'activists' are never satisfied. My heart goes out to this officer, his family, and all law enforcement. Chicago and Illinois, being so corrupt affect all of us negatively. Even if you try to be legit the evil seeps into your bones in subtle ways effecting health and relationships. Without knowing, we violate what we know to be right and our nature recoils upon itself. Strong effort daily to recognize and remain faithful to what we know is right is mandatory or the stress eats your body and brain like a cancer. Anything to kill the pain, sex, alcohol, drugs, power abuse.... and things get worse. Spiritual and psyschological grounding saves the sanity.

Nothing is being done to address this because
Policemen are being/have been so thoroughly
defamed, dehumanized, demeaned and demoralized.

Did anyone pay attention to the fall-out behind the
JVD interview?

The joyful haters are beside themselves over the
interview because they see it as "an attempt to
humanize" JVD prior to trial...

Multiple count, violent, community-sourced, gun using,
mass murdering "African Americans" are afforded the
same pre-trial "humanization" with nary a peep from
the usual joyously hateful radical racialists with an
agenda...

"That's DIFFERENT and you're a RACIST for pointing
out OUR RACISM, HATRED and HYPOCRISY!
Gonna get a cee-arra-numba on yo' ass so you can
lose yo' job, yo' house an' yo' pension too!"

Remember... They're all about inflicting their pain
and misery upon everybody else because taking
positive steps to ease their own pain sounds like
too much work and actually having to confront the
DEVILRY in THEIR community and culture.

"We're a failed people/folkses/culture but it's easier
to shift blame onto you gullible guilt-addled Y/Ts
and the rest of whoever considers themselves to be
part of law abiding, upright and productive society
and demand that you give US 'more grants and
programs' if you want to keep US from gettin' mad
an' shit..."

You cannot satisfy the unsatisfiable.

Their perpetual grievance is their
security blanket against reality.

Their grudge against and hatred of all
who dare enjoy the fruits of civilized society
is indeed their reward by their own hands.

Prayers for The Police Family...

May God rest his soul. And as one who has suffered from depression, do something about it. Don’t be ashamed or kick yourself in the ass and try to fix it yourself. If you broke ur arm, you would get it fixed. If you couldn’t read clearly, you would get glasses. See somebody and get the depression fixed, it’s possible. I’m not a cop but in this city, and with Rahm and the community running everything, I’m sure depression is common. Get help, you owe it to yourself.

Why is it that the good guys, who are rare, are the ones that decide to end it while the selfish and corrupt assholes wrecking things for everybody are still greedily drawing oxygen?

If anybody reading this is finding things tough to handle, please reach out for help. You're not alone and there are lots of good people who would like to help in whatever way you need.

Dont wanna hear this nonsense about how people are stressed from getting days off canceled. You signed up to work those units. Guys and girls trip over themselves to work any kind of special employment. People on the watch are complaining that we aren't getting enough overtime.

STFU moron. Some of us dont want to get divorced or die a day after retiring.

The criminals view the police as non persons and as opponents. The police department brass and mayor don’t support the police and through their calculated ways of disempowering the police authority on the streets, puts real people who happen to be police between a rock and a hard place with no way out.If you do your job,you can lose your job.Empowerment of criminals is no different then a parent giving the authority to run their own home to their children. When community activists are given the authority to take over a expressway under the guise of they are just exercising their first amendment rights, you are giving power to the people in a wrong way.The last real mayor was Richard j.Daley.He had the backs of all his public servants. They were empowered to do their jobs.Todays politicians have no backbone. They only want the power that they won’t give you. There is a reason the mayor has a security detail.Where is the security “details”for the police officers? The vast majority are good people. Can’t say the same for politicians like black panther rush, faln Luis, and others.

Simple. There are only a few counselors and they can’t spend all their time going to roll calls at all the districts and units on all three watches

Too many suicides in a short span of time took its toll on me but I sought help. I preferred seeing a private practitioner over EAP just to separate the two entities in my mind. Nothing against EAP at all. I was there once for sleep deprivation from one of the suicides (which happened to be on my post and turned out to be a friend). I couldn't function properly for a sec. They wrote a note for the med section requesting that I take a few days off to recover. Easy peasy. This job's difficulties are compounded by that insufferable prick of a mayor, and a superintendent who favor public opinion instead of listening to us. Here's another somber thought: there are degenerates and liberals who are actually cheering and laughing at this recent suicide.

There are ways out of this dead end job. Go back to school but go for something that ends with skills that land jobs.
It breaks my heart to hear so many old co workers tell me they are trapped. It will be hard at first but make a change.
Leaving CPD improved my mental health, took a pay cut at first for another department but had more time to finish school.

There are answers.

Too many are trapped, trapped by mortgages, tuitions, family obligations, and trapped by having few skills which translate to a similar-paying job in the private sector. The more you possess, the more you're possessed. If you need out, be brave and get out. This job is a dead end but there is chance for a better life out there.

9/04/2018 10:13:00 AM

I've looked into to it lets see I can either be a truck driver or salesman with no pension plus most trades won't take older apprentices or need juice to get in? I'm trapped in this nightmare now!

Look at other jobs if necessary, put the word out, make civilian friends, ask around. I do think one should wait 20 years if possible, but if not, nothing wrong with changing jobs. I am looking.

With that being said- there is at least 1 CPD who needed help, reached out, and got stripped because of it.

I hope that this is untrue. Can anyone debunk that statement?

9/04/2018 02:40:00 PM"""

Without question they will strip you if they find out about it. I wouldn't trust anyone in this Dept. as far as I could spit. But Jesus people get your own Doctor and anything is better then killing yourself in your own squad car. Your life is worth more then that.

Yeah Rauner signed the bill. Now all you have to do is pull your gun out and some Judge can put you on the rubber gun squad. "Clouted need not ever worry".

This job really does not care about you. W by en working you may be the best and your co workers come to your retirement party etc. But after that you ride off into the sunset like you never existed. I was a sergeant in a specialized unit and took REAL good care of my guys. Been retired almost 5 years now and only 2 stay in contact. I guess all them X mas dinners and burned slips etc really didnt matter. This department needs to start a retirement club where retired or disabled coppers get an e mail or call once a month to make sure they are OK. We give up alot to be the police. Never forgotten is not true.

On a post about an officer taking his own life, there are STILL people leaving comments bashing each other. It makes me so sick. I realize that this blog isn't closed off to the general public, however you can usually tell when it's a po that leaves a comment. GROW UP PEOPLE. We have so much stress in our lives and are losing the lives of our brothers and sisters because of it. Stop acting like the bully on the playground. We only have each other and our families.

SCC whether you realize it or not, YOU are doing a GREAT service to each and everyone of us out here who turns here when these things happen. You are "therapy" for every poster. Venting is what NONE OF US will do except with our closest friends/partners. This Sgt has AWESOME sons who I hope and pray can use this terrible time to help motivate them even more than they have been their whole lives. Your dad still, and ALWAYS will love you and be watching from above instead of in the stands. RIP!!

You are right. Back to school for what. You get a degree with no work experience and you are in your 40’s or 50’s and a job will be hard to find. Companies want younger people with or without experience who they can pay a lower wage. Plus they don’t want older employees and the health problems that come with them

What about attending one of those bi weekly or monthly meetings, luncheons or breakfasts? I too am retired but years ago my Sgt told me never to give up my childhood friends, school friends, neighbors etc and isolate myself with just police officers. Best advice I ever got on this job. Now during retirement I’m enjoying myself

Baby "G"
