RIP Jon Burge

A convenient Boogeyman for all sorts of crooked reporters, lawyers and professors.

Used to smear an entire Department, 99.9% of whom never worked for him.

May you find the peace that eluded you in life.

Only the defenders of unethical, wicked, evil, foul, unprincipled, unscrupulous, dishonorable, dishonest, unconscionable, iniquitous, disreputable, corrupt, depraved, vile, villainous, and nefarious behavior would have you believe he was the Boogeyman. He was a Saint a true Hero.. Be forever grateful he was on our side. RIP Commander

Commander Jon Graham Burge was an excellent, dedicated police officer and a Vietnam War veteran who was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, two Army Commendation Medals and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He was treated very unfairly when discharged by the City of Chicago. Also, he was used as a poster child by those with an agenda for a lawless society, by politicians trying to secure their positions, by a vengeful U.S. Attorney and by the rabid media who will destroy anything and everything for a story. Despite their collective efforts to destroy him, Commander Burge prevailed and is highly respected by many people. He will be missed. May you rest in peace Commander Jon G. Burge and thank you for your dedication, mentorship and service.

I worked with Burge during the 70's and 80's. First in 004, then at the old Area 2.
He kicked ass and took names. He would be the first though the door and last one to go home. The man had a personality that would light up a room. And when some sidewalk expert would come up to him with a bullshit complaint, he'd say, in his big raspy voice " My name is B.U.R.G.E, and don't misspell it when you beef !.

I'd work with him any day of the week.

Jon Burge was the scum lawyers scapegoat. All they had to do was just mention his name and then the absolute guilt of their 'client' was then transferred to Jon in, "Guilt by Inference.'
All those years of alleged brutality and the hundreds of alleged victims, witnesses, B.S. artists et al and yet he was never found guilty of any one of those brutality and torture allegations.
Webb came out with his own personal guilty verdict from his overpriced investigation but couldn't 'prove' anything either. He blamed his inability on the statute of limitations. Pffft.
They wouldn't leave Jon alone dragging him into countless interviews and depositions.
The best they could do was find that testimony from one of the many depositions did not correspond exactly with one prior. What did they then have?
A classic, pimpy perjury charge. That ranked right up there with fibbin to the feebs.
The media were equally to blame for this ongoing sham.
What about the 'dozens' of inmates who likewise filed charges vs. Burge claiming they were 'victims' of his torture and despite an overwhelming finding of their guilt through witness testimony, evidence etc. wanted their case thrown out just because they mentioned Jon Burge. But when it was determined that it was impossible in most of those cases as he was RDO, out of town or even 'retired' when they made those 'Burge Beat Me' allegations... NONE of them were prosecuted for perjury or lying to the FBI.
So then they reverted to the tactic that everyone in the Area that Jon Burge worked (past, present & even future) were all likewise guilty because they knew, worked with or in the same Area as Jon Burge so it didn't make a difference if he was even in town, the scumbags sued, the Shitty settled.
Rest in Peace Jon, you fought a hard fight in a rigged contest.

I made this statement before and would like to repeat it. I knew Jon in a professional capacity and always considered him the "Policeman's Policeman". He was loyal to the Chicago Police Department and I always felt he had best interests of the Chicago community and fellow Officers at heart. He conducted himself in accordance with highest standards of the Chicago Police Department. He was a gentleman and was known in the Police Community as an Officer who would always stand with his Officers.

If my soul was on the way to Heaven and Satan made one last attempt for my soul, Jon Burge would be the person I would want covering my back. So long friend. RIP Andy Christophersen, Retired Detective, Area Three Violent Crimes

Jon Burge was a decorated Vietnam Veteran, wounded in combat and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was Mission Focused, at a time when you were Expected to begin the narrative of your report with: "While on Aggressive Patrol, we observed". All of the Commander's actions were reviewed by attorneys at Felony Review, and the State's Attorney at the time was "Mumbles" Lil Dick Daley. If Jon Burge did anything wrong, it was done with the full approval and cooperation of attorneys, some of whom went on to be judges in Cook County. I never had the privilege of working for Commander Burge, but the few times I met him, he was always a gentleman, and never arrogant or pretentious about his rank. He stood by his subordinates, and never betrayed them, or rolled on anyone. He was an outstanding Chicago Police Officer, and his Crew, flushed many pieces of shit down the toilet. May he Rest in Peace, he was a Great Cop and Leader of Police. Baby "G"

A short version of the Jon legacy and just one example of the dedication of his detectives: ....a police officer left his house to go to a nearby gas station...did not return for several hours. Unusual for him. His brother a police officer reported it. No leads, no clues..No cameras in those days..nothing to go on. The brother P.O. reached out to Jon's detectives. The incident was completely out of their area.. detectives voluntarily responded ASAP. The officer was murdered and found in a burnt out van. Within hours...offenders in custody...remember...no leads, no clues..no nothing.....just working the streets......

Forgotten IS:...the thousands of victims and their families who were routinely helped by Jon and his detectives, day in, day out. No mention in the media of the victims of violence, and their families who these detectives helped on a daily basis....for many years...not to mention dealing with the most violent "worst of the worst" criminals on the streets.

Troll reader: Jon Burge reminded me in a way of the character Dirty Harry. He earned his job and was charged with fighting crime in lawless areas of this city. When he was successful people disapproved of his methods. They called him old fashioned and out of step and all kinds of names. But he got results and for that I as a citizen, will always remember that fact. Burge and his so called Midnight Crew by morose journalists and crummy lawyers in this city who also made money with staggering crime rates can STFU. I remember him as being instrumental in bringing the vicious and notorious criminals to justice despite the efforts of some of the community and was happy to see justice prevailed. The liberal media enjoyed slandering him and the liberal prosecutors enjoyed charging him, but nothing was said of the hundreds of criminals he put behind bars and made the city safer. The lives he saved by putting the scourge behind bars. The only interviews was from criminals and we all know they aren’t liars, because the media believes a criminal over a policeman, makes for great sensationalism. Were there techniques used to get the scourge to confess probably, but maybe not too different than the government uses on terrorists. He saved innocent people from brutal criminals which their acts are like terrorism. Ponder this, does the media believe a life long criminal only commits a single crime as opposed to only getting caught for one?
RIP, your career wasn’t in vain because I’m sure ever boss was proud at that time when police could actually accomplish a mission. A mission of cleaning up the streets as opposed to today.

Fahey and O'Brien thank you Commander for getting the Wilson brothers put away for 20 + years.I worked with both officers in Area 1 SOG and then again 15 years later he was my Watch Commander in 012 District and was a GREAT BOSS. One on only a FEW bosses with BALLS who backed up the officers under his command, R.I.P. Commander , You were the REAL POLICE

The last 10 years of cpd detectives are terrible. I have a guy that wont leave area 002 if wind is blowing or rain, it will mess his hair up. Another guy is taking his kids to school, picking up dry cleaners, cooking dinner, cutting grass, etc.
John we need more detectives like you, just give me one like you.

I want to thank everyone who took the time to share all the kind words and memories regarding my brother, Jon Burge. Because he was five years younger than me I regarded him in the early years as my “little brother”. In time, however, he became, and will always be, MY HERO. Thanks again, Jeff Burge

I refuse to allow the last utterly disrespectful comment to be the final send off to my dear brother-in-law, Jon.

Savoring the comments and knowing Jon was so highly regarded and respected, provided Jeff and me with a peace and respite from the circus of the last six days and for that I thank you.

I will miss your heart, your head and your spirit dear Jon. God speed!
