Rogers Park Execution

  • The gunman was dressed in black and wearing a ski mask as he walked through Rogers Park on a sunny fall Sunday morning.

He passed a car, glanced inside and kept walking in the 1400 block of West Sherwin Avenue around 10 a.m., a witness told police. Minutes later, a single shot rang out down the street.

The witness got out of his car and saw Willard D. Watts, 73, lying on the sidewalk with a wound to his head, according to police.
73-year-old man shot over what? He still had his phone. He was walking his dog. Is this the same District that had the graduate student in town for less than a day getting killed recently?

Anyone here old enough to remember when Rogers Park was a nice quiet neighborhood?

Yes SCC Rogers Park was a nice neighborhood about 50 years ago. I lived there and spent over 30 years working the lakefront areas on the job. This is a RP story. So I read in the news where on 26 Sep 1715 hrs. at 1200 W Albion a Loyola student is the victim of an attempt armed robbery where 2 men displayed a firearm.

In the second robbery at Devon & Lakewood on 29 Sep 1145pm a female student was the victim who was hit over the head, her cell phone and purse were taken. There were 3 bad guys one described as 5'7, glasses, wearing a red jacket.

So now I am wondering in incident #2 if she saw glasses & red jacket didn't she see the race, hair & color, mustache & beard, shirt, pants etc. I am also wondering in incident # 1 if the student saw a firearm why isn't there a description of the offenders.

The Loyola newspaper, the Phoenix, said that students were raising questions as to why they were not notified of the robberies. Incident 1 is across the street from the campus, incident 2 is a short 2 blocks from campus. The Loyola police chief cited the "Clery Act" a Federal law that requires when an incident will be reported on or near campus." He said it wasn't eligible for an alert. Gotta follow the book!

If you go to the Loyola Campus Safety website the incidents are listed with no real information that is useful. But they do have this information, "If a student is seeking resources related to an act of violence you can contact the wellness center or community coalition on gender based violence website. Yea right! So why no information on the offenders? Is it political correctness, "whatever" privilege, whitewashing crime or restorative justice? What is iconic is that Loyola has undergraduate and post graduate programs in criminal justice and the school of law to boot!

The Loyola campus was always ripe with victims of CSA and robberies thats why the predators seek the area. What ruined Rogers Park was the abundance of apartment buildings available to the scumbags, the left wing liberal thought that our City government and Loyola University exudes. Oh, and I think that it being on the lakefront it is affected by the "lake effect", you may have thought that was a weather pattern but it really affects peoples political leanings. And there are more nuts in the lakefront districts than in any part of the city. Just look at the other districts, 20, 23/19, 18. Get the picture? Also the demise started in the "Juneway/Jonquil Jungle."

Sorry but I am now retired.

I recall plenty of deaths from shooting along with several officers involved and shot by offenders.
The area of the Jungle has always been a hot bed. The prior area south of Devon on Winthrop and Kenmore was another area. Until Loyola bought all the area up.

Plenty of death and dismemberment too. Bodies in dumpsters, children in plastic bags even one wife or girlfriend sealed up in the walls of an apartment. Shots fired plenty of times at police or by police.

When I left 024 was a sad day since every day was like going to work at the United Nations of crime.
Promotion are great but bitter too.

I toured in 015 moved to 014 then 025. But 024 was a great time. It was a place where life was stranger than fiction.

Rogers Park was nice into the 70's and that was when it started to turn southside. Another area that was okay was out Devon from Sheridan. It always amazed me that Jews and Arabs could live among each other there but killed each other in the Middle East. I have always been amazed at that fact. I think the Sherwin killing was a hit of some kind. We have about a two in ten chance of finding out what happened and that is what is also distressing.

Both DOAs were walking dogs. Second shooting sounds very similar to your story.

BySun-Times Wire email

A man was shot and killed Monday night at the lakefront in Rogers Park on the North Side.

At 10:20 p.m., Eliyahu Moscowicz, 24, was walking on the Loyola Park bike path near Lunt Avenue when someone opened fire, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. He lived in West Rogers Park.
No one was in custody early Tuesday as detectives conducted a homicide investigation.

On Sunday, a 73-year-old man was found shot to death several blocks north on Sherwin Avenue.

The man was walking his dog when the shooting happened. Police said he may have been robbed.

The Cleary Act was created because a female student was murdered at an expensive college, and the school failed to alert students of the threat. The victim's parents were powerful lobbyists, and the Cleary Act became federal law, and is named after the victim Jeanne Cleary. Yet an earlier post raises an interesting point. Federal Law requires that any school receiving federal monies Must List all crimes on campus. And some off campus, if they involves students. SO IS LOYOLA FAILING TO COMPLY BY FAILING TO GIVE FULL DESCRIPTIONS OF THE OFFENDERS? In this age of Political Correctness, nobody wants to paint any minority member, including violent criminals, in a bad light. Yet, one has to wonder if protecting the "Image" of minority criminals, in fact violates the federal law. Students have a right, and should know for basic survival, the Race and Full Description of predators, who prey upon them. Students should not be sacrificed on the altar of PC. Stay Safe. Baby "G"

I lived in RP in my early 20's. My RE agent told me RP was an Up and Coming Neighborhood, and I bought it. What a joke! I saw live gunfire from my condo balcony several times. I soon realized there was more section 8 there than I ever thought existed. The corners were an open air drug market. Buildings were being rehabbed and would immediately go section 8 due to the terms of the cheap loan the owner got for rehabbing. I soon saw that RP was going to be a bad neighborhood for a very long time.

It wasn't safe to walk around at night. Period. I sold and moved to a safer neighborhood. I did make a decent profit on my sale, so only the prices were up and coming. I wouldn't live in that area again for free.

I have never looked back.

Man was shot on Loyola Beach this morning on Lunt Avenue.

I lived in Rogers Park in the early 70s, and recall Lackey's Steak House on Lunt next to the El. One could walk anywhere at any hour with no fear. It was a quiet, mostly Jewish area. Mostly older residents, with the exception of the Loyola students.

Loyola, which I attended, had no security back then, as there was nothing to worry about. No one locked a door. Saw Blazing Saddles about 5 times at the Granada Theatre, and often ate at Little Kings. Now Loyola is surrounded by bad areas, just as is Marquette in Milwaukee.

For decades now, "diversity" has wrecked Rogers Park.

Rogers Park started going to shit in '78...

Bangers started moving in, en masse. Had my family stayed in the neighborhood, I'd have had my pick of two demilitarized zones to attend High School: Sullivan or Senn.

So we packed up our stuff, said good bye to ole Hayt School, and moved out of the City. It was rough being a city kid and getting transplanted to the 'burbs. But we adapted, and in hindsight I thank my parents for what they did to get us the hell out of the Shitty.

back then the whole place was pretty nice with the exception of Juneway Terrace that was a shit hole... Now the whole place is a shit hole and that's really sad.

I remember Rogers Park being about the same in the 80's as today, and looking then like it'd been that way for a while. It's always been up and coming, never arrives. The area east of Sheridan is mostly very stable, same with first block west of Sheridan, and many individual blocks further west are also great. My guess is many of the childhood memories are coming from people who remember the immediate area of their homes.

Somebody ought to triangulate the surveillance photo. Should be able to get an exact height. He looks tall and quite lean to me. Reports at CWB say 5'8" to 5'10" and 170 lbs, but that doesn't look right to me.

10:00 am on a Sunday morning. In a ski mask. That's truly weird stuff. He had to know the neighborhood reasonably well in order to get away quickly. CWB says witnesses saw him "running southbound near a set of train tracks" still in his mask.

If I understand, the 2nd murder took place well off Sheridan into the park, not right along the street. Again seems to be a sign of someone familiar with the neighborhood, literally getting off the beaten path. An outsider driving through looking for random white victims would probably just step out of a car, shoot and jump back in.

Single shot to the head. Weird. Very weird. I thought serial killing had gone out of style, that crazies all wanted to be celebrities today. This is like 1980 all over. More Son of Sam than JW Gacy.

The Clark theatre / Flukys, the Granada, 1997-1981 lived there, then made enough money to move on. Nice buildings/bad residents

Yes, I remember attending family parties there in the 1970s and 1980s. I have a few family members still living there on Arthur.

Call in the FBI Behavior Science Unit from Quantico for profiling. The B.S. Unit will blame Hannibal Lecter.

Maybe B.J. Pritzker has the $olution. "Reparations"?

Yet another Rogers Park murder late last night.

Eliyahu Moscowitz, M/W/24, was shot and killed along the bicycle path in Loyola Park. Motive and shooter unknown.

Can Area North detectives rule out interracial serial "thrill" murders? Ballistics?

Note that the CTA Red Line has three stops north of Devon Ave.

We frequented the Oasis Bar on the east side of Sheridan Road in the early 1970s.

I see by a google search it's still there.
