That Pesky Weather Thing Again

  • Only two people were shot in Chicago over a 24-hour period Saturday, marking a second day of a significant drop in daily gun violence as cooler temperatures moved through the area.

The day before, on Friday, there was a 22-hour span when no one was wounded or killed by gunfire. That day was bookended by shootings in the Austin and Lawndale neighborhoods on the West Side.
Seems simple. We've known about it for decades. So have the people who taught us. Sp will the people who we've taught. But some New York carpetbagger came in. Since he was from New York, when he told politicians and media types that weather had no effect on crime, they ran with it for years....until he backtracked last week.

Perhaps if people left police work to the police? And listen to the people who have actually done police work? But that might make sense. Quick! Promote another girlfriend, family member, dope user!

Hey scc,
015 was told that us “troops” will be staying in 015 and be placed in teams of four officers with one radio at “hot” spots in the district. So we’ll be guarding dope spots on Madison or other narcotics locations, out numbered significantly, making sure we stop drug sales. We were also told no lunches we’ll be taken and that if we want to eat we have to bring food with and keep it on us for 12+ hours CATO IS A JOKE!!!

There was a university study years ago that argued if the public housing high rises in Chicago had air conditioning installed, the crime rate would have been significantly lower. The residents would not have had to hang out in the gangways, courtyards and lake front in hot weather.

The good news is with the current global warming conditions and a target rich environment the number of bodies stacking up will lead to less available “ victims “ ! In about twenty years police will hardly have to leave their stations.

Just watched Riccio on channele 5 news, telling us that murder rate is down, shooting rate is down, and overall crime is down. When asked how this was achieved he said, part of it is that “ we have more officers on the street then ever before”, am I missing something? How long are we going to continue with this false narrative. 2 dead in shooting outside a major downtown hotel, a 73 year old man walking his two dogs in Rogers park, shot and killed, a woman found shot in the head on Montrose Beach, robberies, carjackings, seriously, Who are we kidding.

as a retired CPD I have to agree with you. The crooked democrats that have run Chicago have run the department into the ground. I liked McCarthy and thought he did a lot of good for CPD and would have done more if given the time. What NYPD has that we have always lacked are the numbers. The NYPD can put thousands of cops into any situation. When I look at todays CPD on the street, they look like slobs with a mishmash of uniforms and bad hair styles, beards, dreadlocks, women wearing earrings and carrying purses. Professionalism is gone in Chicago.

Just a note, years ago while working old Area #6 Homicide a Latin King hit guy told us he liked working in bad weather. He added, not many people on the street to get in his way of taking someone out. He was responsible for eight killings that we knew of in 14th dist. From the interview he was using bad weather to achieve his hits and not get ID'd. I know this is an exception to the weather rule, but it makes perfect sense. Lastly, Halloween is just around the corner, and this is one of the best times of the year to take care of business without being identified, whatever kind of weather.

Chicago is a geographical oddity.
Gmac is too, institutionally speaking.

Entomological FunFact:
Cockaroaches don’t like the cold. It’s why they huddle up behind the water heater.
When it’s dark, a bit warmer and they hongry...they scurry about.
When there’s a lot, they get squarshed.

Ok, I give up:
Where is there a cold spot, opposed to a hot spot, in 015?
Where’s Special Aid and why is Lil Antney doing Specials fluff bit?

If the city goes up, there won’t be many restaurants in 015 serving lunch and dinners. Maybe the CPD should negotiate a truce with the rioters while you take lunch. That’s the way it usually works

SCC - It's pretty much a guarantee that whenever the media runs a "hasn't been a shooting for " story, the next 24-48 hours will see a spike in order to make up for the void left by the 'quiet' period.

- Friday, 2 shot
- Saturday, 2 shot
- Run story
- Sunday, 17 shot, 6 fatally (not including the Montrose Beach incident, yet).

Sunday was the 4th day this year with 6 homicides (maybe 7). Only the 50 shot shitshow of Aug 5th had more with 8.

Nail. On. The. Head.

And that in turn points directly at a failure of leadership that runs all the way to the mayor's office. Couldn't be any more clear.

Stands to reason. A well-run organization will excel at developing leadership from within the ranks. Emphasis on "developing." CPD is not exactly a shining example of "well-run," hence the problem.

The problem with bringing in outside talent is obvious. They're an "outsider." The problem with promoting from within is also obvious. They'll have roots in a defective and flawed system.

My two cents? Get a good outsider and get over it. Emphasis on "good." But before that can happen you need a good mayor. Bottom line is, you're probably fucked.

The pros have studied this phenomena for years. In fact, in the late 70s and early 80s the San Diego police were basically forced to change their entire image because we had such a dramatic spike in officer shootings . . . that is to say POLICE OFFICERS being shot and killed.

Officers back then were neat and clean, but they didn't project an image that commanded respect. The uniforms were all tan (like Naval personnel) and the patrol vehicles were all white . . . perfect for a beach town until cops started to get killed. The new chief painted the cars black and white and the uniforms were dark. We got our PR24s and we used 'em.

How do you exert "command presence" when you look just like the jamoke you're trying to arrest?
