Ruiz Park

Friday dedication:
  • On Friday morning, a boy bolted up a lime green slide in a small park tucked away on a corner of the Southwest Side. Two others pumped their legs back and forth on swings, flying up into the air and holding on as tight as all the yellow-spotted leaves still clinging to their branches. A young girl smiled and ran past a newly minted sign: Irma C. Ruiz Park.

Thirty years ago, Ruiz, a Chicago police officer who “took care of everyone,” became one of the first female officers to be killed in the line of duty when a gunman entered a Near West Side school and shot at Ruiz, instantly ending the life of the beloved wife, mother of four and police partner.

A Chicago park in the Archer Heights neighborhood was officially renamed in her honor on Friday. More than a hundred friends, family, fellow officers — even the horse named after Ruiz — gathered for the dedication. And before and after the ceremony, Ruiz’s grandchildren played in her park.
RIP

Way overdue.

My heart tinged every time I drive past that school on South Ashland.

I hope there is a plaque in the entrance way as a permanent memorial to the officer that died and the Detective that stopped the bad guy and was wounded.

Hey, they named a park/playlot after the wife (Parson) of one of the Haymarket bombers in 017. Over by Belmont and Kilpatrick.

"On Friday morning, a boy bolted up a lime green slide..."

With the way they build slides now, that was all of a two foot bolt.

I remember this day well as a citizen reader and very nice tribute to a very nice woman. I hope her family is doing well; she is not forgotten in the hearts of many nor are they. RIP Irma.

God speed Office.

I am expecting in 20 or 30 years an SJW turned alderscum does not dedicate a street or park after the shooter— claiming society was at fault for the reason he did this... prolly get a packed stadium of white democrats (leftist mob) cheering it on.

There is, indeed, a plaque in the school (I've seen it).

That' nice. However, I remember exactly how that incident happened. Ruiz turned the corner in the hall and was then shot. She never knew there was a threat around the corner of that hall. There was a man who then took the guy out. He should also be hailed as a hero. It was his action that prevented any further loss of life that day. He should not be overlooked and there should be some type of acknowledgment for what he did.
