Take it All!

  • Chicago Teachers Union members lodged their first demands for a new contract Tuesday — including pay hikes and a host of topics state law bars the labor group from striking over — months before negotiations will likely accelerate with a new administration.

[...] “Where will the money come from? Rich people,” CTU Vice President Stacy Davis Gates said Tuesday, as she repeated the union’s call for Illinois to tax its wealthiest residents at higher rates and pointed to revenue-generating ideas that need support from Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

“We have a governor who has committed to legalizing recreational marijuana and putting a tax on it, we can take that as well,” Davis Gates said. “They are also talking about sports betting. We can take that. They’re talking about opening a new casino here in the city of Chicago. We can take that.”
Notice everything that the teachers union says they can "take." Nothing about reducing costs, making classrooms more efficient, cutting out bloated management, maybe contributing what every other civil servant contributes to the dwindling pension funds. No, just "take, take, take."

Rich people have an out though - they're rich enough to move, declare a different primary residence, shift money overseas, create tax shelters, remove all the toilets from their houses, etc. The exodus of millionaires from Illinois will dwarf that from other high tax states.

And that will leave you-know-who holding the bag. Again.

Hey, two of my close friends are millionaires— they live in a very well to do area on the north side— guess what— they are about to get out of Illinois and head to warmer states. Their main complaint was too much property taxes and no return on investment. Why pay so much property taxes and get shit on in the end. Plus this whole Burke thing really pissed both of them off. One was super pissed at an aldermen who intentionally saw it that he was denied TIFs for a restaurant he opened up. Do for I alone have counted about 15 people who got the fuck out Illinois, all of them have advanced degrees and well paying jobs. I believe my wife knows a welfare leech who left her daughter and moved to AZ and is a homeless their after her BF had enough. She is prolly working a truck stop. But all in all, dirtbags are not leaving, tax payers are

I love the greedy, "We can take that" I heard repeatedly from this Union person. Nice, and they wonder why people are opting out of public schools and going private. I would to if I had the money and children. If I had the money, at this point I would leave the great socialist paradise that Illinois is rapidly becoming. Then again, I may just have to leave anyways. It's getting bad and becoming worse.

IL Dems will be pretty upset with this article. Not the fact that everyone is leaving but the fact that IL is only #2 for people leaving. A few more taxes, fees and programs designed to "take money from rich people" will move IL to the top of the list. Hopefully, the IL politicians and labor leaders will qualify as "rich people" but I have a feeling there will be plenty of exemptions to the "rich people" list.

Lets just raise those living wages for teachers already. Lets do it for the children.

One way to generate revenue for the schools are automatic deductions for the children's breakfast, lunch and after school snacks. Let those L.I.N.K. Cards be used like debit cards to help solve those funding crises. Just like those automated deductions for electronic billing or electronic transfer for the everyday people. It sounds cruel to take poor people's money to feed their own children but it is time to give back which the didn't earn (to steal a quote from president Obama.)

The only problem one can foresee is that newly arrived parents living in the shadows are not eligible for government assistance. Maybe there is some way to get democrat leader sponsored relief or American taxpayer funded assistance or even municipal identification cards accepted for use for generous entitlements. The children-Our future scientists, doctors and community activists are counting on the wealthy to pay their fair share. Lets back the teachers and make that highly educated workforce of tomorrow a reality!

As a teacher I demand to be able to work 12 months out of the year despite only working nine months out of the year with summers off. Not fair. Summer is the best time to educate students as evidenced by summer school programs for the disadvantaged. Its unjust to be laid off in the summer months despite being paid an annual salary.

How does one expect students to graduate at a sixth grade level during cap and gown picture time unless teachers are required to work throughout the year? Don't even mention grading papers at home during those grueling nine months out of a 12 month calendar year. Fellow teachers need to get busy and just get a part time and get paid during the summer months. The extra cash money can help pay your children's tuition, pay off your credic cards or those summer months vacation cruises.

To those who might know the answer:
How many children are enrolled in this city's schools?
What are the demographics of CPS school population?
What is the total size / cost of the CPS budget?
How much does that equate to per child?

A university course is roughly $26 to $30 grand per year.......are we paying more than that per year, per child for the sub-standard education
that CPS is giving the "children" here? Just asking.......because these "children" are leaving school unable to decently read, add, subtract,
speak clearly and enunciate, leaving these "children" totally incapable of entering this 21st century workforce......

We have a Gov Prisser who's first act in office is to increase the salaries of state workers, despite the budget crisis, despite the insolvency crisis, despite the credit-worthiness crisis. Nope, first act apparently must be "reward the minions; let the "Rich People" pay". What defines "rich people"? CPS salaries, for a long-term teacher, will likely qualify their own union-members are aforementioned "rich people". There are only so many millionaires in Chicago; most of the population are blue-collar wage-earners living in multi-generational households trying to make it week-by-week. Maybe CPS union-leaders need to comprehend that 70% of US households live paycheck-to-paycheck, with less than $500 in savings. Maybe CPS union-leaders need to realize that furloughed Federal employees here in Chicago are resorting to food-banks and hand-outs after only three weeks without a paycheck.

OT- I haven't heard any mayoral candidates talk about the TIF funds. How about a complete independent audit? I know according to state(or is it federal) law that it cannot be used for daily expenses. Can it be used for alderman's local capital improvements. That would free up 50 million( hopefully soon 23 million) for the pension funds. Bike lanes could be included. I am sure that there are many creative ways to use those funds to free up the city budget to make pension payments. Does anyone have some incite?

Wealthy people pay most of the income taxes in this country, both state and national. The top 1% of earners pay 1/3 of all federal income taxes. Priztker has refused to release his income taxes and is suspected of paying little or no state income tax as his investment trust is out of the country. The Chicago Board of Education is a patronage haven for democrats. Chicago teachers should come into the real world and realize that the system is teetering on bankruptcy as massive pension payments are coming due and most likely cannot be made. The liberal democratic way, " tax the rich, make them pay their fair share", when no one can define what fair share actually means and ignoring the fact that the upper income people pay most of the taxes as it is. What the teachers union knows and does not want to say is they are coming after you, the middle income earner for the money because that is where the money is.

The left's plan is to bleed the middle class dry with high taxes, expensive healthcare, ect, while the their voting base (poor blacks and illegal aliens) get free everything on our hard work. (You machine flunkies pay for that too, keep voting democrat).
Remember, the government doesn't produce anything, they take from us. Ultimately, we will be drained of the fruits of our labors, and wake up one day to the reality that we are under a socialistic government. We are on the verge of that right now. The Orange One is just a speed bump in the left's way.
What occurred under the Jugears administration? Cash for clunkers, Obamacare, GM (government motors) subsidies with government having a hand in who ran GM. There is more. Before Barry, Clinton/Bush (globalist) meddled in private sector by forcing banks to make bad loans to unqualified buyers on threat of sanctions with Jimmy Carter's "Community Reinvestment Act".
The lefts end game is to drain the middle class, and the country's industry, then the big takeover occurs, and we turn communist. What do those sucking off the government teat find appealing about chains?

I will be pressing the gas pedal all the way to floor until I see the sign welcoming me to Texas.

Remember how the lottery was going to solve all of the Illinois education woes? Didn't happen. What about the gaming machines in taverns, etc, not much for the state there. Anyone who thinks the casinos will be the savior of pension funds had better look at the numbers. The vendors, contractors, employees, regulation costs, etc will get their end first. How much will be left for the pensions?

This is one of the reasons why one should never subject their kids under the poisonous brainwashing of these commie pseudo-educators...

Entitlement is the core value these selfish quasi-tutors...

Every year, these whiners never miss the opportunity to broadcast their need for more pay, benefits, and recognition...

After all, "its for the kids", right?

Wasn't the proposed casino profits to be used to shore up Police and Fire pensions? How about the greedy and lazy teachers contribute more than two percent to their pensions?

Teachers have a union, not the moose club with guns. Their union negotiated the amount that they would pay into their pension. Our infernal organization negotiated a no strike clause, the shift dif and the uniform allowance instead of additional pay. Do not knock a real union.

I thought maybe there would be a coming to the senses moment. Doesn't look like that's forthcoming. There's a lot of wisdom in the concept that you "can't fix a problem using the same thinking that got you into the problem". In other words, the greedy, bloated teacher's union, etc. etc., thinks they can just keep going to the golden goose without any repercussions. [as birth rates go DOWN and we get less and less of what we're paying for]

We're seeing the invisible hand of that sort of thinking now in the Illinois exodus, and it's only just begun. The worse it gets [more greed, smaller tax base] the greater numbers of people who will realize that they can move somewhere else, make half the income, and STILL have more money in their pocket.

The more expensive the home, the harder it's going to be to sell into a shrinking market. If you can't leave yet, at least downsize. Your taxes will go down, you'll be able to save up a little money, and you'll have a more marketable property when you finally decide to leave. Do NOT just assume that things are going to continue the way they are now, as bad as that is. They're going to get much worse. Want proof? Pritzker. See you on the other side of the border.

I'm a CPS teacher and I'm appalled by the our union's leadership and their public statements regarding the new contract. The Union's leadership, if you can call it that, makes a great reason for people to not be compelled to join the union.

Wasn’t there just a court ruling that stated you are not required to join a union or pay a fair share. Sounds like the teachers have an option to get out

“ free shit” can be quite expensive. I’m gonna say it. This country will be a socialist shithole in 20 years. All major cities will be a mess. Maybe in the open spaces out west ,will be habitable. Maybe. Also, half the jobs in the future will be eliminated by automation. That degree in art will be worth less than toilet paper.

Classic..."Tax the Rich". In any graduated tax rate system raising the higher end has a ripple effect through the entire tax base. You can bet that anyone who actually works for a living will see their taxes increased. As soon as my youngest leaves for college I am out. Let's see what they can take when there is no one left to take from.

And finally...FUCK CPS teachers and the system itself.

Couple of points:

1. Someone above asked about CPS demographics: poor and largely minority
2. Exception to point above.."selective enrollment schools" which were constituted so that liberal politicians could send their kids there..not have to deal with the ghetto kids and they could still say they sent their kids to public. Also so their wealthy white liberal donors could send their kids there.
3. CPS teachers will admit on the QT that their school is little more than housing to give these kids somewhere to go and keep the older ones off the street.
4. I will throw CPS teachers one bone: Many kids are so ill equipped and prepared to learn anything due to their home life. Uneducated undisciplined parents (if there are in fact 2 involved) who don't care about education make for a poor situation that no level of teaching can overcome.
5. FUCK CPS teachers. I have had to send my kids to private school due to the shitty schools and the predators that go there. Now you want to tax me more for a system that is so bad I couldn't even use it. Suck it!

i have been in a trade union for 50 years. in that time i have had to produce 100% every day. dangerous work, be careful, but hurry up. all that time ive been told im grossly over paid for a simple tradesman. productivety always going up. accidents not allowed, bad for business. now look at the teachers union. virtually all grossly over weight. most can barely speak english, either broken spanish or ebonics. and their product.............? by most accounts at least 50% defective with another 25 % substandard. in most business you have to strive for 100% to stay in business. can you imagine 50% of skyscrapers collapsing shortly after being built? i find the ctu a bunch of disgusting over paid kommie slobs, many of whom are probably illegals and as someone stated people who hate unions hate them because of scum like the ctu. they funnel millions into the toni campaign so they can steal more of our tax dollars. AND wtf is with the color red for teachers unions? the universal color of communism ! i see the l.a. teachers strike are all dressed in the kommie red. and these scum indoctrinate YOUR children!

Damn, it's nice to see our teachers union has more than enough money ($1.82 million+)in their coffers to hand out the following small pittance for a mayoral candidate:
$23.00 every minute
$1,379.35 every hour
$33,104.50 every day . . . for the 55 days between 11/21/18 to 1/14/19

Why all this hate for the CTU? Many of you don't seem to understand just how bad we in the middle class are getting fleeced by the wealthy in this city. Ask any cop working in the schools what it is like for a teacher. CPS has done some ignorant things when it comes to handling money, and the misinformation on here is appauling. For instance, Teachrrs don't contribute to the pension because CPS offered to pay it instead of giving teachers a raise. Now you want teachers to pay that back? Ok... how much more will be taxed if that money is converted into giving teachers the raises they earned! CPS scores are way up through the district, but it is the same Bill Bennett bullshit from 40 yrs ago. CPS never said "F the police"...it was Paige May, who works at a private school. That wasn't even a CTU event...it was a labor event. Oh, and btw, Charter schools are now unionized by the CTU, so more charter schools means more CTU membership.

Don't be upset that the FOP doesn't know how to negotiate for you. I'm sure the CTU can give them some pointers. Many of you seem jealous that some people have power in this city... you have your nose pushed against the store front window, and blame teachers when the real enemy is people like Bruce Rauner and Ken Griffin. Ken Griffin got $19M back on his Illinois state income tax check...did you? Bruce Rauner invested in companies that bought CPS bonds at an inflated interest rate after he threatened bankruptcy...did you? They are making $$$ off of your taxes, and you have your verbal guns pointed at teachers...smdh
