- Mayor Lori Lightfoot spoke to the City Club on Tuesday. On the eve of her first City Council meeting, Lightfoot discussed priorities for her first 100 days and how the dozens of shootings that happened over Memorial Day weekend highlight the city's need to get a handle on violence.
While dealing with violence remains a top concern, Lightfoot also announced a new push for accountability for police officers and aldermen alike.
How many layers of accountability are there already? Department supervision, Internal Affairs, COPA, the Police Board, hostile courts (edit - and the Inspector General). Better add another layer!
- "It's long overdue that the City Council act swiftly in the first 100 days to pass the ordinance proposed by the Grass Roots Alliance for Police Accountability, or GAPA, to create civilian oversight of the Chicago Police Department."
And that should be the death knell for any form of proactive police work. You are a paid observer and recorder of criminal acts. Nothing more.

More excuses being made for criminals committing crimes and more blame for the police department. Does she realize that the police department does practically nothing anymore??? Broken families are caused by drugs, like the crack epidemic foiseted on cities by the CIA. Drugs that helped put fathers in prison.

Just guessing here, so someone prove me wrong - these communities see a larger wealth transfer into them (public money) than wealthy neighborhoods see. That is, the disadvantaged neighborhoods suck the wealthy (tax paying) neighborhoods dry with services which pretty much fill the place of knowing how to survive (maybe even thrive) in a modern, legit economy. Add it all up. Welfare programs, money spent on caring for gunshot victims, policing and housing convicts, etc. “Disadvantaged” neighborhoods suck the wealth out of governments and every extra dollar spent is just throwing good money after bad.
Why doesn’t private investment happen? That’s even more simple - 9 out of 10 private investors agree that given the choice, they’d rather not live next to assholes.

This will work - with a certain segment of the voters - until chaos reigns and the voters remove her.

That mom getting blasted is a crime of poverty because if she wasn’t in that poverty stricken area, she wouldn’t have been blasted. No one wants to admit a statistical truth: poor people behave poorly. That’s not to say rich people don’t also behave poorly, but it’s a different kind of poor behavior. Wealthier (or at least not impoverished) people behave poorly by cheating on their spouses. Poor people don’t have spouses - they are financially rewarded to have children out of wedlock, and more children = more $. Those who are better off behave poorly by cheating on their taxes. Poor people don’t pay ANY taxes - and in fact they are also rewarded with guaranteed returns thanks to Obama. In poor neighborhoods, garbage litters every park, sidewalk, storefront, yard, and alley. They have the same garbage collection service as non-poor areas of the city. The same number of garbage and recycling cans per-capita. They choose not to use them. I see them throw their chip bags out of the windows of their hoopties. I see the kids unwrap a fruitee and throw the wrapper on the ground right outside their school, and I see that the teacher sees that and does nothing. You see they’re poor, so that behavior is acceptable. I certainly don’t pack my garbage into my car, drive to Jackson Park, and throw it out the window. Nor do I chop a baby into pieces and throw it into the lagoon. That’s poor people behavior. Yes there are well-to-do serial killers and rapists, and many are white. I get it. But over 500 black people killed other black people in Chicago last year. How many financially stable white people killed each other in Chicago’s few remaining financially stable neighborhoods? And lastly and to the point: in financially stable neighborhoods (which tend to be white, which poor people will equate with racism but it’s truly a byproduct of work ethic and self-responsibility) no one is blasting a mother in the face in the early morning hours. When is the last time you heard of someone doing that in Mount Greenwood, Beverly, or Garfield Ridge? Never. They might not be rich in those neighborhoods, but they aren’t poor. And they’re not committing crimes of violence at the statistical rate that those in poor communities do.
Poor people behave poorly for a few reasons: 1. It’s easier and more convenient than behaving properly. 2. It’s financially rewarded. 3. Their culture says that doing anything else is “acting white” or “selling out” 4. There are no consequences for their poor behavior, not in their households and not in the court system. 5. They will always be bailed out and never be so poor as to actually suffer the way poor people do in other countries; that is, they will never be turned away from an ER regardless of their ability or unwillingness to pay, they will never go hungry, and they will always have shelter.
So, I understand your outrage. They are crimes of poverty. But I don’t think in the way Lori is trying to sell them.

Chicago sure could use the services of someone skilled in the practice of root cause analysis. Basically you pose a question, like "Why is there so much black-on-black crime in Chicago?" and someone suggests an answer. Like "Poverty." And then challenge that answer by simply asking "Why?" Why does poverty cause crime? "Because blah blah blah" bullshit is a typical answer. And challenge that again, why? Before long you realize that "poverty" doesn't cause crime. It begins to look like something else does. So you challenge the something else by asking "Why?" And so on until you've finally peeled the onion back to what really causes crime. Ultimately, it most likely won't be mistrust of CPD, or lack of jobs, or businesses leaving neighborhoods. These are symptoms, not causes. Until this is done, all Lori is doing is throwing darts and wasting money on useless social programs.
Eventually, the root cause will probably be shown to be the destruction of the Black family structure, the seeds of which were sown by Democrat social programs begun in the '60s and which is now out of control. "Generational dysfunction" probably comes close. Blacks did not cause the problem; Democrat social programs did. The notion of fixing this by expecting the gov to throw more money at it is foolish and will only perpetuate it. The fact that Lori doesn't realize this should alarm everyone.

Poor people don’t pay ANY taxes - and in fact they are also rewarded with guaranteed returns thanks to Obama. In poor neighborhoods, garbage litters every park, sidewalk, storefront, yard, and alley. They have the same garbage collection service as non-poor areas of the city. The same number of garbage and recycling cans per-capita. They choose not to use them. I see them throw their chip bags out of the windows of their hoopties. I see the kids unwrap a fruitee and throw the wrapper on the ground right outside their school, and I see that the teacher sees that and does nothing. You see they’re poor, so that behavior is acceptable. I certainly don’t pack my garbage into my car, drive to Jackson Park, and throw it out the window. Nor do I chop a baby into pieces and throw it into the lagoon. That’s poor people behavior. Yes there are well-to-do serial killers and rapists, and many are white. I get it. But over 500 black people killed other black people in Chicago last year. How many financially stable white people killed each other in Chicago’s few remaining financially stable neighborhoods? And lastly and to the point: in financially stable neighborhoods (which tend to be white, which poor people will equate with racism but it’s truly a byproduct of work ethic and self-responsibility) no one is blasting a mother in the face in the early morning hours. When is the last time you heard of someone doing that in Mount Greenwood, Beverly, or Garfield Ridge? Never. They might not be rich in those neighborhoods, but they aren’t poor. And they’re not committing crimes of violence at the statistical rate that those in poor communities do.
Poor people behave poorly for a few reasons: 1. It’s easier and more convenient than behaving properly. 2. It’s financially rewarded. 3. Their culture says that doing anything else is “acting white” or “selling out” 4. There are no consequences for their poor behavior, not in their households and not in the court system. 5. They will always be bailed out and never be so poor as to actually suffer the way poor people do in other countries; that is, they will never be turned away from an ER regardless of their ability or unwillingness to pay, they will never go hungry, and they will always have shelter.
So, I understand your outrage. They are crimes of poverty. But I don’t think in the way Lori is trying to sell them.
Every notice there are always “help wanted” signs in the ghetto but they cry about unemployment? The crime of poverty is the criminal lifestyle and criminal mentality it has fostered and encouraged for generations.

The problem isn't that there isn't accountability for the police. The problem is a lack of accountability for the criminals. Currently our courts, prosecutors, and politicians are far more concerned with protecting violent criminals from the consequences of their actions than they are in protecting law abiding citizens from the actions of violent criminals.
