- A hearing on a request for a special prosecutor in the Jussie Smollett case quickly switched its focus Thursday from the “Empire” actor to the judge on the bench.
The proceedings grew unexpectedly heated when Sheila O’Brien, a retired appellate judge pushing for the special prosecutor, filed last-minute paperwork suggesting that Cook County Judge LeRoy Martin Jr. recuse himself from deciding the issue because his son has worked as a county prosecutor since last year.
O’Brien contended that would put Martin in a precarious position if State’s Attorney Kim Foxx was called as a witness in the proceedings.
Perhaps Martin Jr can "recuse" himself, but not really do it....like Crimesha?

The issue is not whether Judge Martin’s son is an ASA. Frankly, he is junior in the office and not involved in this case. The real issue is what role his father the judge played in his hire. Sheila O’Brien should ask Judge Martin the following question: “Your Honor, what role, if any, did you play in your son being hired by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office? Did you ever personally, or through anyone else, communicate with Kim Foxx or anyone else at the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office in an effort to help your son get a job there?”
I’ll bet a lot of money that Judge Martin called in a favor for his son and Kim Foxx delivered the favor. The issue is the appearance of a quid pro quo between Judge Martin and Kim Foxx.
This thing just gets more bizarre. Kim Foxx claims she welcomes an independent and non-political investigation but then turns around and chooses the person to investigate her, that person being tied to her mentor and protector Toni Preckwinkle in a very political way. Then, if it’s true that Judge Martin called in a favor to get his son hired, pretends to be offended that someone would question his ability to be unbiased.

IMHO I can't see how 'Judge' Leroy Martin's kid being a prosecutor in Kiddie Court is a conflict or reason for the judge to recuse himself from deciding on a Special Prosecutor for the Lil Kimmy kerfuffle.
But one thing's for sure, a lot of familiar Family Names keep popping up in Chicago and Illinois politics -- and the news -- every generation, and the Judge's was just the latest. I recognized the name 'Leroy Martin' right off the bat but I couldn't place it from where at first.
And in ten years or so we'll likely be hearing of Leroy Martin III in the news. Hopefully for something good.

If Jussie was not so well known, and so outspoken in his views, then , yes, the entire matter might well have faded away. I have not forgotten the incident with the nephew of the Mayor killing a young man on Rush street and getting away with it for years. The police department, to include some detectives who worked on the case, the CCSA, did their best to bury that matter and very nearly, and for all practical purposes did bury the matter. The penalty to the nephew and to the lying witnesses was minimal.

As I recall martin was the Area 4 Deputy Chief. There were others involved in that, a few commanders and a Chief, as I recall. The undercover DEA agent testified but nothing happened. I used to see Rick Miller standing outside the hotel on jackson Blvd. He was a lying, corrupt cop. When some detectives wanted his revolver to compare to murder bullets, Miller claimed he was robbed of his gun. Lots of scandal and scum back then.There was more, much more on Martin, but the system covered it all up.
I’ll say one thing Leroy Martin Sr. was the Police and done well for his family.

Some may remember the "traveling deputy shows" of the late 80s early 90s. This is where the superintendent and the top deputies would travel to the districts and address the district supervisory staff. During Martin's reign he came to our district. One the things he addressed was, if the police officers don't do the job they should at least look good. He cited an example of a female police officer, that he personally saw, who was assigned to a baseball game who had two buttons of her uniform shirt unbuttoned. He then exclaimed, "I could see her t---ies." There were female supervisors in the audience. I think everbody just wanted to crawl under their seats during his speech. I had heard stories about him previously but I could not believe the things he said at the meeting and how uncouth and vacuous he sounded.
Good for Judge Shelia O'Brien to call this out. It takes a lot of courage to do what she did considering your life could be destroyed by the Dems. in this town. Thank you Judge.

That was Ronnie Martin, another son of Superintendent LeRoy Martin.
Write what you will, but Ronnie and his Father were both good by me.
Ron Martin came on the job and worked in002 for Captain Fruin. When he was a sergeant he ended up in IAD. His father never interceded to get him promoted to lieutenant. He retired and is currently a minister.
