- Former Ald. Willie Cochran was contrite in a federal courtroom Monday, saying he felt “awkward and ashamed” to be facing sentencing for a public corruption conviction.
“Quite a day, quite a day,” Cochran said quietly, shaking his head as he read from a sheet of paper. “Quite a time period, going through all of this. I never thought I’d be making a statement like this under these circumstances. ... I’m better than this."
But minutes later after he was sentenced to a year in prison, Cochran struck a far different tone as he left the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse, accusing federal prosecutors of lying and exaggerating allegations of misconduct against him. He said he made a mistake by pleading guilty.
“There’s no justice in this,” a defiant Cochran told reporters. “I’m not happy about it, my family is not happy about it. But you know the fact of the matter is it’s never gonna be right. Not under these circumstances. And everybody should be concerned. ... The Justice Department is allowing their prosecutors to tell lies and hide evidence.”
In the end, however, Cochran said he has no plans to file an appeal, meaning his case will end the way so many others have before it — with a convicted Chicago alderman headed to prison.

Disappointed he only got a year. Should have been at least 5 years. Stealing from seniors and children is the bottom of the barrel. A law should be passed barring convicted felons from being employed in any city, county or state jobs or working for any outside contractors that do business with them. Of course, that will significantly raise our unemployment numbers but it would sure put a dent in the budget deficits.

In the past, if a convicted elected official or very high ranking public official, was convicted and sent to federal prison ( No crook politician ever goes to state prison here),and they kept their mouth shut, their wives were given jobs and a job was awaiting them at McCormick Place as an electrician or drapery hanger at 100 grand a year. Not sure if things have changed.

Cochran used the stolen funds to pay for fancy dinners, Mercedes-Benz accessories, his daughter’s college tuition and a gambling habit that involved frequent trips to Indiana casinos.
According to a court filing made public June 13, Cochran in 2012 allegedly met with a church pastor on the roof of an abandoned motel in his ward to ask for a loan to pay his daughter’s tuition. By that time, Cochran had left the charity’s account with a balance of just $7.21.

The judge in this should get him back to the courtroom and explain his statements. I dont know if a judge can reevaluate sentencing after the fact but it would be fun to see him get upgraded to 5yrs for being an asshole.
