I've known Hyland for years. He was a really great guy. He'd bend over backwards to help someone. Unfortunately, he didn't get any help himself. He had some personal issues, everyone does, but we lost a decent man here. But please, folks, talk to someone if you need to.
Thus ends the record of a just and upright mason.
Graham Hyland was all you could ask for in a coworker. During my time in Division 9 he had everyone's back and was always there when you needed him. He was as brave as they come and was a dedicated family man who worked tirelessly to provide for his family. Last time I saw him he was working a part time gig at Walmart at 47/Cottage and I wish I would've looked harder and listened more carefully so that I could've helped him. He encouraged me to come to CPD and I wish he would've come with me. God speed and I hope that whatever demons may have been haunting you were put to rest. I will miss you and I hope you're finally at peace with yourself. I'm very sorry for his family and my condolences to all his loved ones.

Condolences to the family and friends.
Please get help because this act destroys family members that are left behind.
Your life is to important to throw away. Just because the job is shit doesn't mean you are, its just 8 hours guys.
This break my heart. How many have we lost in the last year and now this?
Bereaved family...
Sorry for your loss.
We grieve for the loss of a brother as well.
A PO did that about 15 years ago across the street in Old Edgebrook. I inadvertently had the occasion to walk through his house afterward. It was disheveled and filthy. If you have a partner or friend who's home looks like that it's a warning that things are going south. Take a step back and consider intervening then any way you can, before it ends like this.
To those who are suffering and fighting their own devils: PLEASE GET HELP, it's available!
Sad.
Uh, that's "not" Forest Glen..
I am so sorry to hear of this tragic loss. My deepest condolences to his family and friends, and to the law enforcement community.

When you are a good man trapped inside the worst jail in America with evil and violent predators it can destroy you. Graham was a kind and hard worker who developed demons but sought help. Unless you’ve been exposed to this harsh reality you’ll never know. For the Tribune to immediately post the details, photo and home address is beyond comprehension. At this time in society the definition of good and evil has been flipped on its head and nothing is more apparent in this Anti-Police County and City. My heart is broken for his wife and 4 girls and it’s situations like this that highlight the need for Law Enforcement to think outside the box to DEMAND the respect we have earned. Rest In Peace Brother and prayers for the devastated family.
Graham was a biproduct and victim of an enterprise in Cook County that is fueled by a fervent Anti-Police Government. Working with him in the jail and Division 9 and later coming on CPD it was never more apparent that the inmates really do run the asylum in Chicago. Both the Sheriff and Supt pay lip service to the mental health crisis we all face as First Responders but 0 is done. The Cook County States Attorney and Sheriff profit handsomely from political contributions from a legal system that thrives on decriminalization of everything and a Sheriff who balances his budget of suspension time and layoffs of his most knowledgable officers. To spend your 40 hours in the violent pressure cooker that is the jail and not being expected to snap or develop psychological issues is unrealistic. My heart goes out to Kim and the girls he was so very proud of. It's time for Cook County Sheriffs and CPD to jointly use their sick days and let everything go until major changes are implemented. This is a easily correctable epidemic. RIP Brother.
In today’s society the policeman has to dwell in very dark places, the key is to find someway to be the light. Find friends, faith or a positive hobby, don’t let the bastards grind you down. Be there for each other and lean on someone. Prayers for family and friends.
The department absolutely did nothing to help him and let him down immensely. I hope he found PEACE.
Our job is bad enough but it’s hard to comprehend what the guards go thru during their shift everyday. We might see an incident or deal with an idiot once a day in busy districts. The guards it’s 8 hours everyday day. There is no break They are surrounded every minute of the day with the inmates that don’t get disciplined for messing with the guards
It's usually the people who are very honest, give the most, and think
someone will notice and reward them. It doesn't always turn out like
this, and being sensitive people, it breaks their hearts.
Anyone with very high standards and expectations: police, doctors,
dentists, nurses. Perfection is expected, but none of us are perfect.
It's counterproductive for management to use the evaluation system
to punish people, hold them back, frustrate them to leave. People
have had nervous breakdowns after "bad" (they expected MUCH
better) evaluations.
Resentment and frustration builds as management holds people
down, controls salaries, then benefits themselves because they
have held costs down. The officer does the work, but management
takes the credit. Not a healthy environment.

If anyone can help, Graham has a great family and great daughters whose lives were just turned upside down. Thank you for the kind words too.
May you Rest In Peace Dear Brother
Not only are our officers abused, but also the children/newborns, the elderly and innocent. There is also no respect for childhood and the innocent. Sick demented behavior against the good and innocent is being pushed as the norm.
Police officers are on the frontline of the demented, sick society we are living under.
May officer Hyland protect the innocent in heaven.
My prayers to the family and friends.
They won’t print the name if the scum employee who spat at Trump’s kid during a visit here, but gladly print a police officers home address. Media is disgusting.
RIP BROTHER IN BLUE !!!!!!!!!!!!
Please help his family, especially his beautiful daughters. Below is a link to a go fund me page set up by his friends and family.
