Dumb Idea

We know the commander of 007 is in over his head, but this is extremely not smart:
  • You wont believe what the bright headed commander of 7 is forcing officers to do. Take out personal vehicles on fixed posts. there arent enough cars and radios so hes telling the LTs to tell the first line of defense to take out their own cars and post them up on posts in the 7th district. so whose paying for gas or damages if one of these shitheads throw a brick at our windows? what happens if theres a 10-1 and we need to ride? none of this makes sense. did 35th st or uncle lori not figure any of this out? is there nothing we can do to fix this or stir a beef up? I cant imagine area south doesnt have pool cars for us to take. this is horseshit. time and time again, the white shirts dont mind abusing their backbone of the districts. Whats worse is this POs are actually taking their personal vehicles out. i refused too.
Aren't there rental vans? Aren't there CTA buses? If the boss wants you on post by a certain time, it better be via city transportation, insured and indemnified by the city. Anyone taking a personal car to a fixed post needs to be reminded exactly what's what by the FOP rep and FOP.

007 used to be a great place to work clientele aside. D. Robinson is over his head. Why should a certain watch work longer than other watches in the same district? You would never be able to find the old foot guys that had their own car on post. Call em on the radio and they were pissed they had to meet you. Great advice. One of the six know-nothing sergeants that works there will take a message. They will pass it on to the "merit" hired director who works maybe one day a week. She will then send the issue to the city law department where someone who may know what they are doing will decipher the problem and send the answer back to the director. She will then call you when she gets back in the office from a week of extended "contract negotiations". Expect an answer after the first of the year.

THere is also a legal concept that if you are employed by an entity and you are involved in a car accident with any car you are driving (personal or car belonging to the entity), the entity as well as you can be sued. In plain language, if you are engaged in your official duties as a policer officer for the city of Chicago and you are using your personal car as part of those official duties, you now assume liability as well as the city. No thanks. I would consider this an unlawful order on some level.

Dumb idea or police operations savant?
Save the Budget and use the carpool lane.
This isn’t the first time this concept was tried.
The w/c piled a bunch of us once into the back of a stank wagon, late summer for a ride downtown for anticipated traveling community uprising. many years ago.
The bosses reasoning: That’s how we did it back in his old days (‘70’s)
The new age 21st Century leaning never-on-the-street Merit Bosses can bark nonsensical orders all day long but it shouldn’t stop a PO to challenge these sort of dopey, unsafe directives. Can’t refuse an order but you can file grievances...big deal.

Shit details happen. Ain’t the first vehicle shortage, cut backs at MMD, parts suppliers ain’t getting paid, endless cycle.
And don’t forget...those stupid car chases that is destroying a good portion of the fleet.

Depending on the fixed post detail, (like Marathon, ball games, CTA Spec Emp) taking a personal car to a post isn’t always a bad thing.
But taking your car to war zone? That the bus Gus and some blinders.

Remember - You’re for Show not Productivity.
Back to chases in areas known for run of the mill negligent, impaired drivers.
Potential for 10-1 happens when over eager MeritBoss lackeys get over involved in Englewoods’ activities, which should be avoided altogether. A fixed post is a fixed post - you don’t not stray from a fixed post.

Now, should a there be a resurgence and the shit starts flying, hope to retreat at first opportunity...if you can.
This way the feral know your vehicle when you come back.
Oh, and send your claim to your insurance company along with that $500 deductible.

Don’t expect LightLoafer to buy more vehicles, FOP wont be able to get that onto the negotiations table either.
Anyone notify the Alderman?
Maybe he can send some discretionary funds y’all way.

Nobody, repeat nobody, can force you to take your personal car to an assignment while on duty. Once roll call starts or once you hit the start time you must be on public transit or city vehicles. In fact there is a G.O. prohibiting using your own vehicles while on duty. Work in pairs and take the bus if you have to. Remember, you get there when you get there. If any boss gives you a hard time simply say that you were required to take public transit to your post and you arrived there as soon as that entity delivered you there. Oh, and by the way, take your time.

If you take your own car you have to do the following.
You must get a rider on your auto insurance naming the city.
You will have to pay more for your auto insurance.
You may ask for mileage for your auto. ( good luck getting it)
In other words, you are screwed and if you get into an accident without a specific written order to use your own can, the city does not have to back you up.
So your screwed!!

Forget the gas or damage to the cars, that's nothing compared to the lawsuits that YOU will be responsible for when the ghetto lottery revs up its wheel.
By you I mean YOU, not your insurance company, as most policies have an exclusion for using your car for work. And just this posting, which is discoverable, will give "ammo" to the cop haters and their lawyers. Just like the old days when the old South State Street bus route had an accident with 5 passengers aboard and 15 showed up at the ER. Potentially there's more money, and less risk, in that idea than the usual dealing in women, drugs or weapons. An entire generation of people who wont have to, as opposed don't want to, work.

Living under a bridge will be you and your family's future if someone sues, and you just know....
I don't know who's the obama who came up with this but it has to be the most insane idea I have heard in my 65 years of living.
RonS

Every set of standard interrogatories for car crash claims includes questions on your trip, purpose, and you must provide a full itinerary for hours before and after the crash. This is fully legal to ask these questions as the normal rules of evidence do not apply to discovery. You can actually thank all of the gig economy workers such as uber, lift, ect for this. I saw case the other day where a Homeowners association director was taking a deposit to the bank and was hit by another car. The claim was denied since the policy did not have business rider included on the policy and the trial court ruled the car was being used for business purpose. So stop and think about this. Running to get evidence while on the clock, using your car at the parks, or even using it for a base during a fixed post. I doubt the city will indemnify your damages, and even if they do it would be significant hassle. What about a mileage reimbursement? I bet finance would deny that too.

My God, what a bunch of sniveling bastards our profession has bred.
I guess that the sergeant will now be tasked to with dropping off and picking up the fixed post personnel, who will now be forced to remain on their feet for the vast majority of their workshifts? Be careful what you wish for...

Well, we're not "back in your day". If you were too much of a pussy to open up your mouth and stand up for yourself and/or too stupid to realize how fucked up taking your personal car to a fixed post in the hood is, then that's your shortcoming. Don't come down on coppers for not wanting to follow this unnecessary bullshit.

“School officers report to the district in the morning then take their personal cars out to the schools... if you don’t want to take your personal car that you can sit in then enjoy sitting out in the rain all night on your feet on the fixed post. Go out, sit in your car and make easy money.. stop complicating your life.”

And you’re the problem. We don’t drive personal cars at work, it’s not insured, that’s why we drive police cars. And do you really want shit birds knowing what car you drive in? Or mistake you for another shit head? Would you push a beat in your personal car? Get your head out of your ass, you’re the problem and the reason coppers can’t stick together. Get an order from a political hack that we shouldn’t be following for various reasons and your response is “shut up and do it, better than standing in the rain” you must be the commander who ordered this, fuck off.

Don’t you take your personal car when you’re on traffic duty at Wrigley Field or Guaranteed Rate Field?

Have done that in the past.

But it is one thing to take your personal vehicle to your post when you are working a low intensity(hopefully) detail like traffic control at an event.

Entirely different when you are basically on patrol, even tho it is at a fixed post.

Traffic control at a Cubs or Sox game? Maybe OK
Fixed post in 007 on a weekend? NO F'n WAY!!!

As far as foot guys back in the day taking their POVs to their post that is correct. However, they did it because they chose to not because they were told to. Foot guys could either have a squad pick em and drop em off or take the green limousine or the EL. Many chose to take their own vehicles while some did the other. They had their own thing going and didn’t want to anyone to know about it or interfere with it so many times it made sense for them to have their personal cars. However today I would not take my vehicle to my foot post unless I was getting a real good duck or had something else to do....

Hey ace, back in your day people didn’t go to police garages and vandalize and break into officers’ cars either. They didn’t follow cops home and gun them down either. You can go ahead and say “it happened back in the day.” It DID NOT happen with the regularity that it does today. The job has changed. Turn on the fucking news once in a while. So while I’m sure you were a real tough guy without a vest and doling out wood shampoos and taking a $20 from a driver instead of handing him a ticket and going home 2 hours early every day, or playing grab-ass with the dispatchers behind your wife’s back, those days are done. So maybe ease up on the ball busting of the guys currently working the job, because while you may have known it all in 1980, you clearly don’t know shit about today.
