Trib Attempts to Absolve Who?
- There was a moment when it appeared 11-year-old Robert “Yummy” Sandifer might escape with his life.
Standing just 4-foot-6 and weighing only 68 pounds, he was an unlikely triggerman for the Black Disciples street gang and was on the run after killing his 14-year-old neighbor Shavon Dean days earlier. On this hot last night of August in 1994, Yummy spotted a police car rolling through his Roseland neighborhood and ducked out of sight.
He finally ended up at the home of a neighbor and said he wanted to reach his grandmother, one of the few people he trusted to be with him when he surrendered to police — a troubling prospect for the leaders of his Black Disciples gang, police theorized.
How about the people this budding psychopath shot or killed? They get a passing mention, but the bulk of the article is spent making excuses.

I vaguely recall the press trying to vilify the detectives on this case. I can't remember why, and I didn't find any mention of it in this re-writing of history. It is tragic that there are many kids just like him, you'd see them on your jobs; there in the background filling the apartment along with the broken furniture and garbage all over the floor. And, you KNEW they never had a chance! Saddest thing is, it ain't never gonna change.....
Didn’t this POS have something like 25-30 arrests, most of which, were felonies? He was a blight on the community, and he’d have never made it to age 18. While I don’t doubt this kid’s upbringing (or lack of) contributed to his life’s path, by the time he was killed, he was too far gone to be saved. Call it calloused, but society was better off on Sept 1, 1994. Hard to believe that was 25yrs ago.

Sad story of violent people using violence on other criminals and regular people. Look at them talking about the criminal rap sheet. Is anyone surprised that some people would end up dead. Gangs and their members are just neighborhood terrorists. Hell bent on criminal control and crime.
The criminals in this story helped destroy the community and had terrorized everyone they victimized. The sad part is the good people who suffered from all the crimes these people committed before they killed each other and or went to jail.
The liberals who want criminal justice reform should read the words of the survivors of the victims. Letting people who do those sorts of things out early is not justice or reform rather giving them another chance to hurt others.

Yummy's murder death age was 11, not 14 and not 9. He was not a baby. He was an evil child, a pre-teen.
Emmett Till and Shavon Dean, along with their families are the real victims, not Yummy and his mom.
