- The Chicago Police Department advised officers not to cooperate with the Department of Homeland Security, particularly in situations involving immigration arrests, according to an internal department memo obtained by Fox News.
Instead of assisting DHS upon request, officers are instructed to wait for their supervisor to arrive, the memo said. Once the supervisor arrives, “if the request is to assist with an immigration arrest or detention, CPD personnel will leave the scene as directed by the CPD supervisor,” according to the memo.
CPD confirmed the memo came from an internal superior but would not say if the directive came from the mayor. The mayor’s office has not responded to requests for comment from Fox News.

I hope no ICE Agent or any other Federal LE gets hurt because of politicians. The ones they are going after have warrants. And are the real bad guys you want off the Chicago Streets.
Why don't police officers and the union sue lightfoot, the city, the department for ordering the police to violate their oath of office to preserve the law and uphold the constitution. The mayor and any official that tells an officer to disregard their oath and the law should be removed from office. We need to start standing up to these hypocrites and continue to do the job we are paid to do. This certainly has to be grounds to remove these people from office. So what happens if an officer decides not to charge someone with a crime against a gay because the officer doesn't like the law? I bet lori would be screaming about that. Maybe the feds should start charging them with obstruction of a federal official. I hope the feds remember this when lori and her minions come to the feds demanding federal action for the crime and gun violations. Just tell her your are a sanctuary city so we figure you didn't want any action from us.

I am a retired Chicago Police Officer and was disgusted when I heard about this internal memo ~ when I was on the job, we assisted any law enforcement agency, including the FBI who I could not stand, that needed & called for help. If I were still on the job today and ICE needed assistance, I would be there to help them ~ any police officer that has to call for a supervisor to ask permission should quit right now!

This is just as bad as the new law that commie deblasio passed in NY city that prohibits anyone from using words like "illegal alien" telling someone to speak english, or reporting someone to ICE by threatening an insane fine of 250K. Now we have this troll who demands we obstruct and refuse to cooperate with a federal law enforcement agency. If they were rounding Swedes or Norwegians to send back this wouldn't even be news. Kind of like the genocide of white South African farmers that has never made headlines anywhere.
We in CPD never put our hands on any prisoner of ICE or any federal agency when we are called to assist. We never guard their prisoner, we never help make an arrest, we never make entry with ICE. When we are called to assist a federal agency, it's to let us know they are out there in the area - deconfliction, so to speak. And maybe to sit in our car out front to keep an eye on things, but that isn't even always necessary.
My point is that beat cars never did this type of activity in the past, so is this memo the mayor wrote being directed at specialized units such as fugitive apprehension or narcotics or gangs? Who are usually working with federal agencies as part of a joint task force being paid for with federal funds.
Back in the 70s, I ran the BOP's INS detention unit at the newly opened MCC. Every night INS and CPD officers brought in literally vanloads of detainees who were quickly processed (expedited hearings in those days) and sent back to Mexico. Many of them were sent via the "Interior Repatriation Program" that put them on a dedicated aircraft headed for somewhere way south in Mexico. So when I read about the shitstorm created by the arrest of just five illegals the other day, I just shake my head in dismay and disbelief.
Diligent CPD officers out there are in an unenviable position. And it sure seems like your Union is not doing much for you on this front -- as well as many others. Hang in there and stay safe.

It could be that there is a need for CPD personnel to enforce state and local laws that might be an issue in conjunction with such arrests though.

The first commandment of policing is to back up your brothers and sisters in law enforcement. With the issuance of this ridiculous missive, they have violated that sacred obligation. I would rather retire and have my integrity and self respect, than sign off on something as foul as that order and lose the respect of law enforcement officers throughout the country. Doing the correct thing, the right thing, the tough thing is liberating and the consequences are always positive. I just retired with 36 years on. To the best of my knowledge, no member of the CPD ever made an arrest for a violation of an immigration policy. We were much too busy handling the every-day nonsense that occurs in Chicago. We wouldn't normally accompany any Federal Law Enforcement agency on an arrest unless they asked us for assistance. That is the point my fellow officers are making here. If another Law Enforcement officer (Federal, State, County or Municipality) is asking for assistance, we go. We are NOT the ARRESTING officers, we are assisting another Law Enforcement official.
If you're a big exempt boss, there is a difference between being responsible to a mayor and being beholden to a mayor. This directive is irresponsible and so is being beholden to a mayor.

I don't know what actually happened in this case but if an employee of an entity is given a lawful directive not to do something and they choose to disobey that directive, it seems quite fair that they would have to accept the personal consequences of such a decision.
I am not sure there is any substantial difference in "assisting" some federal LE agency in making arrests and making the arrests one's self. Being there to enforce state and local laws is something else.
In any case, right or wrong, the city is well within its authority to determine how its employees will be used.

the devil is in the details. How do you define " helping?" If a federal agent calls for " help", I would show up and see what help he needs. If it is to help him when he is attacked that is one thing. If it is to help him capture illegal immigrants, well, that is something else. It seems that the democrats like to pick and choose what laws they like to obey, even state laws. Lisa Madigan never saw a crooked politician in her 15 hears in office.

I believe it prohibits cooperating on civil matters NOT criminal arrests and warrants. ICE is the one federal agency you should be careful with. After 8 years in Organized Crime I can say I have a great deal of respect for ATF and DEA, real federal agents doing real criminal investigations. FBI - really depends on agents and what they are working or who they are targeting. They mean well for the most part but mostly recruited straight out of college and have no real street smarts. ICE - most incompetent federal agency I ever worked with. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. That says it all, they should confine their activities to the border and airports. On the street they are totally clueless. Absolutely you need to be careful with them! Very careful! Anyone else in Organized Crime agree?
