Once Again, It's Over
Corp Counsel was never really your friend. We've been there many times and their first responsibility was ALWAYS to the City. Fine, we understood that going in. But now they are actively looking to stick it to cops:
- I'm at Corp Council, been here a few hours. No stranger to how things operate there, unfortunately. Been going there for many years.
So, imagine my great surprise when the lawyer handed me a document, specifically, asking me if I WANTED them to represent me. And, I was also given the option to hire my own attorney, at my expense. Then, she goes on to explain that Corp Council, is NOW divided into 2 parts: 1 group of lawyers represent US, the Police and another group of lawyers, specifically and purposely represents the City ONLY, on the same case. Wow, what a shocker.
It gets worse.
You can't even talk to a City lawyer, on the same case, without your assigned lawyer present. So, what does this mean? It now seems, as soon as the City lawyers, can get the City off the hook for a case, they will throw us under the bus. It appears, this is a legal move to make it easier for juries and judges, to punish Officers with punitive damages and other penalties. Wow, I'm glad I'm leaving soon. This is NOT good. Pass this along, to your troops and forewarn them. Damn.
Between this and the post directly below, if you stop anyone proactively, you are taking your continued financial well-doing into your own hands. We don't care if you follow the new rule book to the letter. If you give a lawyer enough money, they will sue anyone for anything, including cops doing everything by the book:
- We repeat - you are taking your continued financial well-doing into your own hands
Watch your asses.

Separate lawyers for the city/p.o's has been going on for years now.
Think of yourself and family first and stop making stops, arrests or in any way interfering with criminals! That is what the city wants. How difficult is it to understand?
Chicago is a radioisotope. It's constantly decaying,
getting weaker. Why stand in the way?
Preserve your health, wealth, and well being.
Don't get involved. They will start to beg the cops only
when this invades City Hall. Trump knows your hands

hell bent on bullshit impeachment. Come Nov. 2020
Trump gets a 2nd term.
I’m in the same boat. Been like this since very early this year (February-Ish)
City off the hook for a case, they will throw us under the bus.

Trump did a similar move with the federal government and EEOC cases.. if an asshole supervisor or employee has been trained— after he or she or Shem has been trained and goes out of their way to do something dumb— the government is off the hook, go after the individual

Legend has it that Soylent Green is PEOPLE!!!!
Current events now prove that Soylent Green is DEMOCRATS!!!
It has always been that way. They just never informed you of the 2 separate City Attorneys. The initial speech was always informing you of the option to hire your own attorney and the listing of your assets for potential Punitive Damages and their expectation of your full cooperation and testifying in the way that they wanted you to if it came down to a trial. Was down there often enough to catch on that the Corporation Council and the Private Attorneys that were filing the law suits were very friendly with each other socially and in many cases attended the same Law Schools.Being single and renting/leasing everything enabled me to be direct and to the point with these wonderful people.Listened to their threatening speech exactly 1 time.Informed the Corporation Council very politely that you will be my Attorneys until you inform me that the case is going to trial. At that point you are fired and i will be represented by my own attorney.Over 34 years on the job and lots of law suits never had to obtain my own attorney.Of course it was a much different Police Department during my years.SCC advice is obviously right on the money and should be followed.
Reign in the horses cowboy. Yes, city will bring in attorneys to represent the city. Corp Con represents you. Both entities want to know their liability in whatever matter is being questioned. Doesn’t mean the city is hanging you out to dry. That being said Corp Con “should” work only on our behalf, doesn’t mean they always don’t look out for their our best interest. Get it.
It does not change anything. The city cannot escape liability for actions of its employees taken within the scope of their employment. It makes no difference how many city lawyers are involved.
As for punitive damages, an employee cant escape them by not having a city attorney who is looking out solely for the interests of the employee.
For the life of me I do not understand people that still go out there looking for b.s.
And don't give me that whole this is a calling, I'm doing gods work crap. This is a terrible job, nothing more.
This new policy will be more incentive for greedy lawyers (People's Law Office, Loevy & Loevy, et. al) to routinely sue officers hoping to garner more funds. This is an issue that FOP should address during contract negotiations.
Retired .38 spl +P
Why would you talk to the city attorney ?? Your conversations are no longer privileged. Are they city attorneys going to depose the accused officer?
I'm at Corp Council, been here a few hours. No stranger to how things operate there, unfortunately. Been going there for many years.
——-
U r learning bro... keep at it. In the mean time. In the legal sense, the city lawyers are doing what is best for their client— the City.
If I was going to divorce my wife, I want my lawyer looking out for me and me only
Union needs to step here during contract negotiations.
Sure sounds like a conflict of interest having lawyers in the Corporation Counsel having opposing goals. Furthermore if you retain a Corporation Counsel to represent you how can you trust them when their co-counsels will be working against you. Trust no one, do nothing to place yourself in this position.
Someone needs to get off the ledge. The City has had separate lawyers for YEARS. If you are accused of wrongdoing the City may also be sued based on the policies of the City. A Monell claim it’s called. The City, by law, cannot pay punitive damages levied against you. It must however, and again by law, pay any compensatory award against you.
As to throwing people under the bus you must understand that generally it’s to the benefit of the City to stand behind you and contend that your conduct didn’t violate Muttley’s rights. Why you ask? Because the City cannot be held liable under a Monell policy claim unless it is first established that you committed a constitutional violation.
It sounds like they’re just tightening up some procedures that already should have been in place. Yes you can hire your own lawyer at your own expense and you shouldn’t be talking to other lawyers without your lawyer present. Nothing to see here.
To say its over is an understatement. I just found out that the Officer living in the 16th District that took police action a few years back and tried to apprehend the catalytic converter thieves, was just handed a 180 day suspension. They don't want you protecting the neighborhood anymore. I live in the neighborhood and know that the Officer was run over by the fleeing vehicle and sustained injuries. He had an accidental discharge when he was struck, and fired a few rounds at the fleeing vehicle. I know there were no converter thefts for about a month after that. They want to give that guy 180 days? I think they should give him a medal. 180 days is way overboard for no one being hit and no complainant.
As a lawyer who handles Public Entity Liability insurance coverage issues, take my advice: never consider your employer's lawyer to be your lawyer. Sometimes, when your interests align, they will do a good job for you. But as soon as there's a conflict, they're working against you.
Years ago when I was a patrolman I had a case in traffic court with a prominent Chicagoan where he caused an accident resulting in an injury to me and damage to the squad car. Prior to the trial call I advised the sitting Traffic Court Corp. Counsel of the facts. So when the case was called he conveniently stepped out of the court room and the lawyer for the defendant was standing next to his client. The judge asked are we ready, and I said no because the Corp. Counsel just stepped out. The judge said we will proceed. I gave my testimony the other side said nothing and the judge said, not guilty. So I watched after my case the Corp. Counsel returned for other cases. You can’t beat the Democrats in this city they have everything fixed. Never trust the Corp. Counsel or the judge they are all on the same side, their side!
Wow. This is huge. So as police, we are no longer agents/representatives of the city? This is why I come in with zeros. It amazes me how with all the changes over the last few years, some coppers are out there doing proactive work.
SCC, could you please do a review of all the changes that have taken place in the last few years that scream to police officers to DON'T do proactive police work? And put it all on one post. We need more coppers to wake up.
Shakespeare was right.
Better get a Lawyer and PUT your Home and Cars and such in "TRUST" SO That NO ONE can take them from you !

So many will be chewed up and spit out for simply doing their job.

Keep your job, money, freedom, family stay FETAL! If some clouted gold star goof pushes proactively stay “ok” then look laugh leave, get coffee Netflix wave at people/ folks. God bless the police amen!
I have 10 yrs. I runned and gunned my first 5, did what the bosses asked the next 4, and now im done. Self preservation is the most important thing you can do for yourselves, fuck proactive nonsense. False plates, hand to hands, holding his waste... just stop it, who fucking cares. Answer your calls, and go home.
Word of the day is Fetal then you don't need the lawyer snakes.
I've been trying to figure out their end game for a few years. Are they trying to make the decent people of the south and west sides leave, why would you stay. You can't let your children out of your sight for even a few seconds, your parents can't go for a walk. Is some white lady from Lincoln Park bitching about the cops gonna help you in the end. There is a plan and its not good for the good people. Don't stop anybody.
They are working for the city because they couldn't get a better job anywhere. What does that tell you about their skill set. Couple that with they are being paid by the city to let you collect a lot of money from their employer. Do I have that right? If I have that right all I can say is Good Luck because your screwed. Think twice before depending on these guys being on your side. They have a very vested interested in seeing you fail.
his is why lawyers are hated. Lowlife money grubbers willing to sell all principle for money.
Can anyone from Finance, HR or ISD explain why the system is now billing officers for 9.5hrs when they take CU? The hours of working are correct minus the half hour unpaid lunch.
Lol yet guys keep signing up for this job. Guys keep zooming to calls and signing up for tact. Doing ISRs, traffic stops, etc. People will never learn. They could tell you that you have to eat a shit sandwich everyday at roll call and people would still sign to be CPD.
That is the way it has always been. People just don't listen.
this came out of Rahm and Lori's accountability Task Force. Those people wanted to differentiate the City liability and the officer's. Read it there for their blue print. It should not surprise you all in the future when the City completely cuts you off. Then you WILL have to get your own attorney at your own expense.
The good news is they busted a 15 year old for shooting the 7 year old on Halloween. Bad news is he will be given year of home mongering so as not to ruin his life. That's the New Chicago where criminals have Sanctuary Status.
Fucking Doomsday Machine.
Wait till the Fucking Two Year Wonders hit the wringer.
You know why there are so many fucking merits and
leaches? They want to avoid the vortex around the
bathtub drain. No way they could fight this themselves.
Be a leach, be connected, avoid it all together. It's like
this everywhere. Only so many 'slots' for asskissers.
You couldn't get in if you tried. As said here before,
the discrepancy in the application of regulations and
rules is what drives the discourse here day in and day out.
The City will drive the Force into the ground and only the
house mice, college educated 'I can't touch that; I can't
work shifts' miscreants will be left. In their zeal to get to
the top of the pyramid they forget it's a sharp point. It can
only hold so many unproductive people. The fucking FBI
has a permanent outpost here. Not a regional office, a
fixed battlefield entrenchment.
Why anyone would take this job is beyond me. “They” are winning. Let them.
It’s been that way for 30 years kid.

I am thinking they are doing this not because they want to , but out of necessity. With officers being sued individually, for punitive damages, and the city being sued, isn't it a necessity for the separation of lawyers, with some attorneys to represent the officers, some to represent the city?
I have always believed that it was wrong to have Corp Counsel represent officers because it was a conflict of interest. Their primary goal is to protect the City and not the officer. Additionally, Corp Counsel has been bleeding lawyers from their office for several years now. You are getting represented by lawyers that have limited experience. They have limited knowledge of our general orders and the Use of Force. When you have to explain to your Corp Counsel lawyers several times why it was a lawful stop and why a certain use of force was applied, you are doomed.
OT Austin leaving them in the dust. Go Tigers make us old Tigers proud.
Yawn
This is nothing new. You should have stopped doing anything years ago anyway. But the allure of the backwards hat and the jeans at work is too much for some. Idiots.
Everyone should htink about getting liability insurance.
Once again fake news. Its obvious you dont really pay attention or havent actaully been to Corp counsel before.
I've never been a cop or a lawyer, but I'm pretty sure it's illegal for the City to do this.
Where have you all been hiding under a rock? Officers responded to a call from another Officers call for help bad guy is charged etc. The bad guy sued and everyone pays punitive damages and the city allows it. So be carful responding to an officers 10-1 that could cost you $$$
To say its over is an understatement. They want to give that guy 180 days? I think they should give him a medal. 180 days is way overboard for no one being hit and no complainant.
Guy was trying to do the right thing and CPD should have supported him. That being said times are changing and if you fire at a fleeing car, things are not going to turn out good
Don’t agree with it, but times are changing.
Corp Counsel is a sham, they work for them.....its all BS.
From not a LEO, just a city worker:
Hire your own attorney. It will cost you less in the long run. From my experience with the corporation counsel, they will try to get you to admit fault or blame a co worker to exonerate the City. Then you will be sued and bankrupted.
They tried to get me to admit fault or
pin it on another cityworker why the streetlights were out. I calmly reminded them the city bosses took bribes and bought defective streetlights. I was dropped from the witness list. The city does not you as a witness. It wants to shift blame onto you and make you the defendant.
Mike the cityworker
How many times do you say to yourself: " Wow, that doesn't seem right/legal//fair/kosher." and you move on, until again you come across something else that doesn't jive with reason. You go through the day encountering these disconnects. Justifying to yourself each time that this 'civilization' is much better than being off raising chickens and growing wheat on a small plot in kansas.
Until one day, you are standing there mouth half open, drooling and swaying side-to-side; looking like an Illinois politician.
As the illustrious unprepared DrRev Jugghaid SpecialEd PhD once said, “Duly noted”.
Guess it would be too much to ask what specifically gets one in for a deposition at CC these days. Unlawful Arrest has been the mainstay for at least 15 years now, as excessive force for 25.
“ Wow, I'm glad I'm leaving soon.” is a clear example of someone having done something, too much and too late for a rotten sanctuary City and a corrupt merit-run Department.
Just trudging through rush hour traffic and paying for parking to a CC lawyers office should be enough to keep ones pro-activity desires in check.
Corp Council has apparently went the way of HMO like health groups did for insurance companies.
CC was never filled with the best and like CCSAO, it’s filled with lots of beginners usually until they gain enough props to go private.
You may even find yourself ‘splaining your case to a paralegal beforehand without even knowing it.
Expectations of professional ethics from a Groot Administration???
Police work and attempts to interact positively in ghetto affairs can be expensive.
No multi-merit boss man is ethics worthy so therefore No CB# is worth a car payment, a mortgage payment or a month of tuition.
William Calloway is looking for civil rights charges against VanDyke... https://www.chicagoreporter.com/laquan-mcdonald-activists-want-federal-civil-rights-charges-filed-against-jason-van-dyke-and-other-officers/
So what is our screwed up police unions doing about this, especially FOP who represents the front line troops. I bet they are totally confused, better get Dan Herbert back, yeah right. All this looks like to me is a dues hike coming so Chubbs Graham can wine and dine with his crew.out there in the northern burbs where he lives. Throw a tracking device on his car IAD, just because its true.
OT sort of: coming soon to shitcago. Disgusting. Let the animals rot in their self cleaning ovens.

Going to Corp counsel isn’t cool, how many times can you get in some kind of shit where a shithead sues you or the dept because of something you were involved in. In my 13 years on the job as the working police I can say I have only been sent down there on 3 occasions.
This is great info and all but quite frankly the city is the one with deep pockets not an individual officer. City can afford millions in damages no officer will ever be found to have to pay more then 30k in punitive because it’s just absurd for one person to have that. Disagree with me ok, if the court finds me liable and I have to pay a million I am “judgement proof” which means the plaintiff gets ZERO.
About 7yrs ago I had frivolous litigation (my opinion) brought against me as a Patrolman.
I, along with the city, were defended by the following Corp. Council Attorneys.
Brian Kolb
Jessica Griff
Mary Ann Spillane
These people were fantastic, they were honest, and they trusted me.
I believed they were truly on my side and I developed an admiration and friendship with them which I will honor for the rest of my days. I cant always say this about my fellow Officers, especially when you are being sued. You find out who your friends are real fast.
There is good and bad in every profession, some more so than others. Sometimes this job can make you feel like nobody, other than your co-workers and family, are on your side.
Remember this Officers, we dont like getting painted with a broad brush either.
It has been this way for 30 years. The first time that I went down there, my city attorney said that they had just passed the bar and this was their first case with the city and that they would representing me and my partner. Then two older gentlemen in thousand dollar suits came in said that they were representing the city in the case. That's a big pucker factor right there. Luckily everything turned out OK. After that, I put everything in my wife's name or in a trust. The city has never had your back. Try to hang on and retire and move to another state. Let Chicago and Illinois tax themselves to death.
let the community rot in their own stew. Slow roll to all calls no light or sirens ever. Never chase in car or especially on foot. If they don't want them caught you shouldn't either. Try that for the next six months and see what the outcome is. Community policing is DEAD over and done with. Fetal is the standing order of the day. If you get jammed up it will be your own fault for not listening and NOONE will have your back, city, FOP or fellow officers. So stay off the limbs with a saw. You have been duly warned. Now it is up you to survive in the community jungle. Be smart. Point, Laugh and Leave or PLL.
Poster 11/2/19 444AM is correct, this has been going on a some time now. I was sued for 24 million dollars 10 years ago and was told that I three CC were representing me and that there were going to be separate CC's representing the city in case I was found guilty of any of the charges filed against me. If my memory is correct every time I went down for a conference there were always several attorneys present. This stopped when the City hired outside attorneys to represent me and my partner.
I have 20 years on and my first time going to corp counsel I had maybe 2yrs. Older coppers told me back then that the city lawyers were never on our side no matter how they would try to paint it. I was always told to be careful with any attorney who wasn't specifically and exclusively representing me. That's how you should all act. Be careful on the streets and the courts
All those words to say the City now offers you an attorney? I guess the implication is that the city-offered attorney is not really representing you, but it representing the city. No example given about how the city threw this copper under the bus though. Sorry, just being overly critical of the post. How about an example of how the city threw this copper under the bus?
And just an aside. If that City-appointed attorney throws you under the bus they can have big problems with the whole attorney-client privilege thing. I know, the sarcasm will reign supreme in the following posts but that lawyer jeopardizes their law license now on each and every case for what? $80k per year? Ya, sorry, I'm calling BS.
This is really nothing new. Each party involved gets an attorney. The city, you, the other POs involved. There have always been separate attorneys assigned. And the form is to waive the conflict of interest in having the CC represent you while their office is also representing the city.
The City of Chicago Gov't is a Whore, and a Whore never loves you..The Whore only views you as something to use to get what it wants..
Last one to leave turn off the lights
When I was sued as a PO, a legal aid in Corp. Counsel secretly told me they have to represent to their fullest capabilities. If not, you along with the help of legal counsel from FOP can sue city-corp, counsel for malpractice!!!!!!! If they offer and do represent you in legal proceedings, and are worthless, sue for Malpractice, they will settle!!!
Wait wait did you really believe a lawyer paid for by the city would have your best interest at heart. You got be kidding or really wet behind the ears or not paying attention the The Chicago Way and Chicago Values being exhibited on SCC for the last several years. Grow up Dorothy this is not Kansas.
Don't feel bad for the new people on the department they are all millennials and have been taught SJW is the right way to police. They are on board lock stock and barrel.
Listen guys, several of my family members are cpd,but I get it,you guys are laying low.I have plenty of firepower,if dude decides to kick in one of my doors,he will be greeted by a hail of oo buckshot for starters, and maybe a couple of 10 mm jhp,s for desert.serious guys,if you get a good address, please give it a little gas.??
Like others have said this is old news. This has always been the City policy. Separate interests = separate lawyers. Years ago I was part of a settlement agreement over a lawsuit where a partner was involved in misconduct. I being his partner was told I was equally accountable for his actions because I didn’t report said conduct. The City began extorting money from me not as punitive damages but as part of the settlement. I withstood my ground as long as I could as my CC continued to badger me into handing over money to avoid greater monetary damages. When I requested to speak with City lawyer and told him I don’t buy the BS they would not still settle the case without my contribution he looked me in the eye and said he’d do one better. He would settle on behalf of the City and let my case play out in front of a jury and “good luck paying the 6 figure punitive damage amount”. Ultimately I caved and paid the $1000 if only to avoid the added stress. But yes this is how the City operates and protects its interests.
I got sued a number of years ago. The City hired an outside firm to do the work. The guy was top notch.
Maybe the FLOP lawyers should step up
Yeah, just like the 'BETO' lawn signs thrown in a pile
on the ground with the caption "not needed now"
So sad to see the young lad go. He had such much
energy. Beto burned out early, like so many Millennials.
I don't want to do this anymore. I want to do something
else. But Beto, what about your claim 'I was born to do
this?' BETO: "I'm going to swear now, so turn off those
microphones. I'm tired, I'm hungry, and I'm keeping the
campaign money because I earned it. This is hard work,
faking it everyday."
Saturation officers last night at A5 took an arrestee into 025 men’s lockup on video and ordered him to take off all his clothes (Yes. ALL his clothes.).
Yes, you’re right...there’s no audio.
But then why are they standing there waiting for him to take off piece after piece of clothing including his drawas to show his junk in the lockup? Esplain me that!
All in pursuit of the ever famous all important one dime bag of weed pinches.
COPA couldn’t get there fast enough in the a.m. to download that video.
It’s no use trying to teach stupid people. They’ll always just be stupid people who say “Yes.” and “I understand.” and go and do some really stupid shit anyways.
so that bag of cash i found is free and clear? no need to process that as evidence
"Wow, what a shocker."
It should not have been. Insurance companies do it all the time. The public defender does it all the time, with defendants' on the same case. Why? Well, the City should have been doing it all the time. But why? They have been since the 2000's. Your individual interests and the City might and probably will diverge or could. Hence, the lawyer for each client on the same matter. Check the Modern Rules of Professional Conduct, specifically Rules 1.8, 1.9, and 4.2.
"Relax Francis"
I would also like to add something very dangerous going on. I was in court last week and a lawyer who represents the City and Officers I’m various lawsuits said that the States Attorney's office isn’t even contesting certificate of innocence from Not Guilty verdicts. So now, anyone who is found not guilty is suing and the States Attorneys office is helping by giving these people certificates. Not guilty , doesn’t mean innocent. The States Attrorney is very dangerous.
I know the officer personally from that incident in 16, and I know he is an honest man who would help anyone. That is why he tried to stop the thieves. I know he does not like being in the spotlight, and after the news coverage of this incident, and all the attention he got, and then the “COPA investigation” that kept him in limbo for 3 1/2 years, it caused him and his family a lot of stress. His family moved out of state 4 years ago and was waiting for him to retire in April and move out there with them. Unfortunately now, COPA has turned 6 lives upside down, because his retirement is on hold until all this is taken care of. If it took 3 1/2 yrs to decide on the suspension, how long is it going to take to fight it? Absolutely disgusting. He should have received a commendation, instead he’s made to look like a criminal. He could use all the support he can get right now from his brothers in blue.
It’s always been that way.
4:49 A.M. whay f%$#_n joke! It keeps getting 5x worse every years. What is it going to be a couple years from now?
Civilian here.
11/02/2019 04:44:00 AM is exactly correct. In the 1980s, when I worked as an Assistant Corporation Counsel under Nicholas Trovato representing police officers exclusively, the ACCs who represented the City of Chicago occupied offices on a separate floor from us. We were forbidden from discussing the theories of our defense with the City's attorneys and vice-versa. We kept the confidences of our clients' as Mr. Trovato ran a tight ship when it came to conflicts of interests. We did not engage in the crap that is being suggested by so many commentators. If we did, we'd lose our jobs.
And, by the way, we took on the People's Law Office (PLO) and the Loevys' of that day, took cases to trial, and won most of them. When we settled, we did so for nuisance value or those that were dead-bang losers, thus saving our clients from possible punitive damage recoveries.
OT just read that City has 10 high schools and 2 grade schools with less than 100 students. If that is right what is justification for these schools to be open. Can anyone make ant sense it this? Now we have to pay for a Liberian, a Nurse and a social worker for these schools on top of all the teachers and aides and janitors and kitchen staff in theses under populated schools. Why someone needs to explain why this money is being wasted. Willing to bet these are all community schools with big mouthed mothers whaling about not being fair to close the neighborhood school. To her I say A big FU not keeping it open anymore. Sorry Charlenealingle you lose.
IT AINT new.
its been a procedure for decade now.
It is highly likely that one of your co workers or a report you completed is CONTRARY to someone else's statement.
YOU are now the odd man out.
You will be deposed last
Your case will likely be settled due to this problem.

Can you get some kind of Umbrella policy to cover punitive damages? Union needs to negotiate some kind of protections here.
It’s been over.
If you need any further proof there it is.

Can anyone confirm that Lightfoot cancelled the Carter Harrison award and that monthly City Council Hero Resolutions for police and fire?
If true, she really does hate us.
Look at the quick reaction of this guy as he stops a scumbag from robbing him in his own driveway. Slowing down the video it would appear he hits him at least a couple times. Don't let your guard down even in your own driveway. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73-EN1T81Nw
This incident happened in South Africa but we all know this has and will continue to happen in the Dem shithole cities. They are rife with violent crime despite what their cooked figures say. Why would anyone want to be a cop today, anywhere. If a clout baby, well we know why but for the average folks, I'd never recommend it to anyone. Wait till the Groot hires a replacement for FBI (fat, bald and ignorant) Eddie. Wow, I can only imagine what Lori/LarryLBXYZQSP will hire. Think things are bad now, lazy and incompetent will seem a dream come true compared to the next one. "Remember when that lazy oaf Eddie was sup? Ya, the good old days". It can and will get worse. Do nothing, give the liberals what they asked for.
You could just as easily substitute police in these two quotes by James McEachin and it will still be true. "Next time we need to send troops, let's don't send our soldiers, let's send Hollywood". "No veterans, no democracy, no democracy, no America".
Have you private attorney file a motion and then question you about things the city is known for, code of silence with the other attorneys etc.. that shit will stop quickly.
It’s always been that way . apparently you haven’t been sued much in your capacity as a P.O. . which is a good thing.
This is going on with CFD. They have this Petrillo doctrine. Any law suits against the city where our crews are witness’s they can not speak to them regarding the case. They send our people notices to appear, they are not subpoenas. Our medics are getting pissed off. We try to explain to the city that we have CBA’s to abide by. We provide them with dates to appear for our guys. Then they turn around and say we can use them on these dates. They are not giving subpoenas. Start requesting subpoenas by the city.
The city stuck it to the medics in the LeGeier case. Our medics hired their own attorneys.
The city can suck balls.
One month after retiring, get notified by city attorney of federal lawsuit because my name was on a report . After almost two years of continuations and ME reaching out to city attorneys to check status monthly, I call and I’m told by original Attorney, “oh “ , I’m not in that division any more, didn’t any one call you and tell you the case was dismissed? I was stunned. Two years of worrying about bullshit and no one calls. Jag offs. Fuck this city and the c#%t Democrats . Go Trump!
Putting your stuff in "Trust" is a myth, a trust does not protect you from punitive damages, if you are married and everything is joint property then you are protected by tenacity by the entirety law.... many people believe that a Trust protects their assets....that's a myth...speak to a lawyer....been sued 7 times.....and by the way....GLAD to be retired!!!
Corporation Counsels were always clout ridden new attorneys that could barely do a house closing. On big cases they lost to Clout ridden firms like Montgomery and Murphy etc. Everyone got promoted, rich, or judge. Except for the copper who had to pay for parking.
I think it’s called indemnification and it has been in the past a priority in the FOP contract. You always had to pay punitive damages yourself. Usually the mutt suing you will get advise that punitive damages come in dribbles like 10% of you check and that turns them off and they want more from the regular settlement. Now a days they want to punish you so they ask for punitive damages just to stick it in your ass.
It’s always been that way. The city will represent itself and it’s always been up to you if you want to hire your own attorney to represent you.
Can anyone from Finance, HR or ISD explain why the system is now billing officers for 9.5hrs when they take CU? The hours of working are correct minus the half hour unpaid lunch.
11/02/2019 07:48:00 AM
huh, can you elaborate?
All tact teams and gang teams should request to be returned back to the watch. You want us to swipe? No more tact.
Any takers?

Where have you all been hiding under a rock? Officers responded to a call from another Officers call for help bad guy is charged etc. The bad guy sued and everyone pays punitive damages and the city allows it. So be carful responding to an officers 10-1 that could cost you $$$
You’re an idiot ! Tell us who you are so I know not to go to any of your 10-1s . Go back to handing out radios

It really is old trashing the FBI, they do not lurk around all corners looking to charge a copper. The bureau guys saved many a copper's jobs by taking their time investigating coppers when corruption is involved or shear tuning thugs up for shit.
Copper' seen in the federal system are total crooks and belong in the joint. They are not perfect and sandbagging a copy is not in their game plan.
Been retired for 10 years and was a seasoned copper that really seen it all. Also, the U.S Attorney' really love sending the real crooks in this state to the joint, the mutt elected official. If stupidity and sub-IQ' and was in violations of federal codes, the brass of the CPD would never see the light of day. What the minion drunk pulled off on POTUS, was a total embarrassment on the city and to the nation. He still holds his office after he tells the mayor he was drunk as a skunk. The investigation is in progress !! LOL. Being color blind by the CPD brass and city is far from the norm.
God bless the CPD and all LE officers in out country.

As a lawyer who handles Public Entity Liability insurance coverage issues, take my advice: never consider your employer's lawyer to be your lawyer. Sometimes, when your interests align, they will do a good job for you. But as soon as there's a conflict, they're working against you.
You can’t tell me that they are not sharing all the information gained even with the Garrity rule!
No matter what they’re breaking the rules to violate the crap out of our rights!

To her I say A big FU not keeping it open

Each of those schools with less than 100 students will be staffed with a full time nurse and social worker ..in new ctu contract lmao...sjw clown mayor lightweight

Going to Corp counsel isn’t cool, how many times can you get in some kind of shit where a shithead sues you or the dept because of something you were involved in. In my 13 years on the job as the working police I can say I have only been sent down there on 3 occasions.

Sounds cool, but what’s a “working police?”
Shit Corp
Round cardboard business cards
Recently retired NYPD here. If you are doing more than taking reports or making referrals, Shane on you. You’re doing it wrong and get everything coming to you.
Stay fetal boys and girls in Blue. Normal law abiding citizens love you (even when we get a speeding ticket. Though we may not show it at the time)
You weren’t issued a speeding ticket by a chicago copper. I can guarantee you that.

Maybe on LSD. The Lidar's in the Districts are sitting in the closet. Nobody's been trained on them for years.
Loris corporation counsel Flessner has been made aware of a serious case of filing a false police report by a high ranking member of loris staff and subsequent harassment of an innocent disabled citizen. He did nothing, watch the fireworks as it’s being investigated by iAd . Anything to protect the inside Rahm appointed scum. Too bad the fbi or Lausch will respond.
About CC attorneys. Of course they are young! The shop runs on the backs of law clerks, making about $13.50/hr. And now two year teachers will make more than the average ACC. Anyone with skills and a brain who isn't in coasting distance from a pension is heading for the door.
Not a lawyer, Not CPD family is 4th generation CPD.
Here is a plan for SCC and FOP to push:
Effective immediately the city should not settle complaints against first responders.
All must go to trial. This will result in a huge reduction of frivolous complaints against city and first responders. The current backlog of for a civil lawsuit to go to trial is probably 8-10 years. Adding these cases to the backlog will increase it considerably. The community and their respective lawyers will not pursue the cases because they wont get the quick payoff. The cases will be heard in open court for the world to see vs fast settlements/quick payouts behind the curtain. An additional step would be to REDUCE staff and lawyers in Corp Counsels office. Fewer lawyers means less time available time for motions, depositions etc and also lengthens time to trial because all the necessary investigations cant be completed in a timely manner, If the community wishes to file suit- so be it, The Courthouse and Clerks office is on Dearborn, the line will stretch to Western Ave. The multi million dollar settlements for silence would stop immediately. Settling their contract before ours which ended 2 1/2 years ago will not help in our negotiations. Paper said the mayor doesn’t know where the money will come from for the teachers contract, where will she find money for ours?

Can you get some kind of Umbrella policy to cover punitive damages? Union needs to negotiate some kind of protections here.
No. All an umbrella policy does is increase the amount of financial coverage on the policy you have. If you policy doesn’t cover the claim or if it is a punitive damage your umbrella doesn’t cover it.

Van Dyke hasn’t filed an appeal yet These are a few paragraphs from an article after the Supreme Court ruling.
“She had the same concerns that we had, she’s just relieved,” Herbert said. “She wants this case over and I think probably everyone wants to move on from this case.”
Van Dyke filed a notice of his intent to appeal his convictions, but he only did so in response to the mandamus request and the possibility of a longer sentence.
Blagg said the court’s decision Tuesday will “likely” affect Van Dyke’s decision to proceed on that front, but added she would have to speak with her client before any decision is made. Herbert believes an appeal could still happen

A couple of hundred a month for the next couple of years does not mean much compared to a couple of thousand now to these people. However it is now (financialization) possible to sell structured settlements for lump sum cash. If a lawyer puts in the work to get a judgement against the city then adding a settlement against the individual is not much extra work. It is what it is. Getting a personal liability insurance policy will get another lawyer working your side. Adding a personal lawyer to an insurance lawyer to the union lawyer (if your union provides such) to the corporate provided one makes the payoff for the case much more problematic. Contingency lawyers want the most money for the least work. Judges want the least time spent per case. Walking in with a herd of lawyers against a single shylock gets a suit dropped in the sending letters phase a lot of times. A SWAT team is much more intimidating than a single guy with a badge.
CPD's motto:"BE THE CHANGE" Someone please tell me what exactly is this shit ?
Don't foot chase, don't car chase, dont stop anyone, and don't point your firearm. Don't do any ISR's for the ACLU. Arrest on signed complaints only, court sergeant to handle. Just answer your radio and go to your calls. Be safe and God Bless!
