And Just Like That....

  • A 5-year-old boy was bitten by a coyote in the city's Lincoln Park neighborhood.

According to the Chicago Fire Department, the boy was bitten Wednesday around 4 p.m. and taken to Lurie Children's Hospital with lacerations to the right side of his head.

The child was stabilized at the hospital.
Probably a family member angry that their parent or sibling didn't come home from the lakefront the other day, saw the news footage and decided to attack a small human as payback.

Dangerous pests.

#2 The attacking animal was probably just upset that the relative didn't get RWOC in this county

Coyotes get a bad rap.

I found a newborn puppy about five years ago in Lincoln Park. I brought him home and he became a beloved member of the family. I later learned that he was a coyote pup who matured into a wonderful gentle pet who socializes with my golden retriever and my tabby cat. I did have the coyote neutered.

My cousin, who lives near Anchorage, Alaska, has a pet grizzly bear. My sister-in-law has a pet squirrel.

Generally, I prefer the company of animals over some people who are consumate assholes.

We,humans, killed most of the predators that threatend our weakest in the late 1800's... seemed like a good idea at the time.
Back in the 1990's some people thought that it would be a good idea to bring the predators back. Bears, wolves, bobcats, coyotes and mountain lions are regaining their foothold in North America. In addition to their regular diet, small and weak humans go back on the menu.

I never seen one as a kid and I was always playing in the woods and train yards around Chicago but sometime in the last decade I started seeing them all over the place even in the parking lot at Belmont and Western. I was told by someone that they were being released into the city to control the rodent population but I don't know if that's true or not. Anyone know for sure?

Coyotes generally avoid contact with humans. They are wild, and instinctively stalk and eat prey that is pretty much limited to rodents birds and small animals, but unless cornered they do not attack humans. They are skittish and are occasionally perceived as scared dogs. That is what prompts human contact, and it is usually prompted by human beavior. Don't try to chase them, catch them or pet them and they won't bite you. I can see one POSSIBLY attacking a very small toddler left crawling on the ground after perceiving it to be a small animal, but children, adolescents and adults are most likely the aggressor in a coyote encounter. Leave them alone, they do great things to control the 4-legged rat infestations this City has, and also help control the opossum and squirrel populations as well. Now if we could just train them to control the two-legged rat population also.

Many coyote in the Chicago area are part of a study being done by the University of Chicago. Alot of them are chipped and are being tracked regarding territorial boundries, travel habits etc. I doubt the study has kept up with chipping the pups, but they were being monitored since the 1990s.

Nothing new, the coyote (Canis latrans) have been frequenting Lincoln’s Park for over 10 years and obviously have found the habitat quite satisfying hence the overpopulation and the ignorance of city officials.
All this just blocks from the zoo.
Anyone do a bed check?
I did see Animal Control had placed an anvil on top of the LSD overpass at Fullerton and then paint a fake tunnel on the side of the wall with a big red arrow pointing to it. This should work if nobody complains.

To wit; Lakefront liberals will be up in arms if (when) CPD is eventually dispatched to eradicate the problem that the mismanaged Animal Control won’t do. I’ll bet plenty of morons are feeding these creatures too, aside from the usual discarded litter.
Getting CPD to absorb the criticism by engaging the use of firearms, it’s all part of Groot’s Plan.

It took $33,000 and Alligator Bob to snag and ship out a non-endangered reptile out of a pond.
How, when and at what cost will LightLoafer respond to this nature crisis?

Sorry to hear this 5 year old boy was bitten. But, I'm generally very pro Coyote in Chicago's public parks especially Jackson Park and Washington Park here here Hyde Park SS.

Our local parks are infested by tens of thousands of Canadian Geese - they're pooping everywhere. They don't even fly south for the winter. No other place in North America puts up with this Geese infestation.

Coyotes are a natural predator to these Canadian Geese.

coyotes generally are not aggressive unless they are cornered, hungry or have rabies. They go after small farm animals, domestic cats, rodents and what have you. The city would be better off if they’d bring in mountain lions and bears and let them roam the streets. Sure would keep the scumbags off the streets.
