Ridiculous

  • The Chicago Police Department suspended an officer for three months for failing to register a handgun he used to open fire at a man killed in a racially ::cough cough bullshit!:: charged disturbance in 2016 on the Southwest Side.
The only "racial" aspect of this was the shithead at the funeral waving a gun around at residents who objected to his and others being assholes, endangering passersby. He had a previous record for waving guns around at people and the odds caught up to him running into someone else who was actually trained to use a gun. Good riddance.

We remember a time when such an administrative infraction was as low as a reprimand and as high as three days. If the shooting is good and lawful (as this one was - 100%) who cares how it got done? This is an outdated and onerous "rule" that only applies to CPD and ought to be changed.

Hopefully, he wins on appeal. In the meantime, be aware that COPA is looking to hand cops, even when they are acting completely within the law, but run afoul of an administrative rule that wouldn't apply to a Concealed Carrier who killed the same asshole.

This department has gone to SHIT !
I know a great cop, has made thousands of arrests through out the years being stripped and eventually fired for something that happened over 5 years ago and was looked at & approved twice prior by COPA.

Meanwhile, you have people living in their ivory towers pointing their fingers and shaking their heads because they were able to avoid the street and conflict most of their careers. Must be a nice, comfortable feeling to be taken care of and kept inside away from the risk of lawsuits and having to make split second decisions.

You can rise high and quickly in this organization if you just pass a couple tests and avoid the streets.
Like Lt Margolis who bragged about making Sgt but having to wait for not having enough time yet on the job !
Or Sgt Lopez who went from his cycles to the desk to secretary to detective to Sgt.
It's sad and pathetic that there is not required street time tied into this promotional system

It would also cover every moron who gets suspended for doing moronic things, thus emboldening the CPD mentality of cops doing whatever they want without consequence. Therein lies the problem. Would you want this fund to have covered certain officers with a history of molesting young men? How about cops suspended for domestic violence? If you cover one, you cover all. Unless you put a system in place requiring repayment if the suspension is sustained - and good luck with that - this fund would be abused by the idiots of this department. You know, the kind throwing themselves “200 arrest” parties at bars. I could see that guy posting a check from our fund on his Instagram after he catches a few days for one of his idiotic stunts.

Second amendment issues aside; following department directives regarding department or personal firearms and ammunition is considered a less serious transgression per Special Order S08-01-05 "Summary Punishment".

The requirement for registering firearms is under Uniform and Property U04-02 "DEPARTMENT APPROVED WEAPONS AND AMMUNITION"

The max penalty for this should be violation noted.

FOP should start challenging these “rules” that were found unconstitutional and the public doesn’t have to follow any more. Why should CPD have to “register” a firearm other then maybe a duty weapon. I know some coppers that might have a dozen weapons. It’s their right as a citizen and none of CPD’s business. This is a crock of shit. And is everyone who is found to have an unregistered gun going to take a 90 suspension from now on or just this guy because COPA didn’t like the shooting which was 100% legit. 90 days is at least a $20k hit.

I for one am sick and tired of all the restrictions we face as police officers; must live within the city, can not work security at a bar, can not own a bar, must register weapons, can’t assist Federal Agents who are enforcing the laws of the constitution, can’t smoke weed even though the state of Illinois says legal. Can alderman smoke weed? Can water department workers smoke weed? How about fireman? I mean if they think it’s ok for the general public then what’s the big deal right?

Another good example of "no good deed goes unpunished". This kind of heavy handed and overly delayed punishment by a Kangaroo COPA court sends the clear message for police to avoid any policing actions. Especially under similar circumstance. Theses types of punishments can and do create a delay in the officer's split second tactical decision making process. Taking actions to effectively and successfully mitigate similar tactical situations is more than just your survivability and threat neutralization.

To get involved is a personal and professional decision. Today's social justice environment presents a moral and ethical issue for the police. The duty rewards vs. exposure to current punishing and potential financial exposure will have an effect on services rendered. The Community sooner or later will realize the folly of social justice. If not, they will continue to contribute heavily to Chicago's body count.

Agreed. Registering firearms in Chicago has been ruled unconstitutional. This ruling needs to be fought as it’s an unlawful order. All my duty weapons are registered as I understand I have to qualify with those weapons but I have several that are not and I will never register them...especially with the far-left government we have in place in City Hall and the radicals we have in COPA. And I’m sure as hell ain’t gonna be kicking in doors of other officers or civilians (who have committed no crime otherwise) to confiscate theirs.

And yes...this job has become a sick joke. If you have less than 5 years it’s time to start looking at other departments or a different career. My old partner works in headquarters and you should see what Lightfoot has in store for us once a new superintendent (ie Mayor’s Stooge) is chosen for us in June. I can’t believe I’m saying this but it may be time to start burying some of my unregistered firearms and ammo in my backyard. I can only hope we survive a few more years...

Ok, the officer should have registered the gun. If you have a gun that you may use as a duty weapon, register it. Hunting rifle, maybe not.

As for the Department requiring Police Officers to register guns, they may have a legitimate reason. If an officer is served with an OOP and is to surrender all firearms, then the Department needs to know that they are accounted for. Because if they don't get all of them and something happens, the City and the Department could be on the hook for $millions. The weapons should be immediately returned on expiration of the order.

But a 90 day suspension absent any aggravating factors, like an OOP, is just ridiculous.

By recommending a 90 day suspension, COPA gets to fluff its stats. They can can say "We suspended X officers for XX days. So to the public COPA says "We are hammering those out of control police." The public never hears about the unreasonableness of suspension and the arbitrator overturns it.

What gets me is the candyassed bosses that sign off it.

Another question is:
When the State passed Concealed Carry, didn't it outlaw city gun registration lists? If the State did, you know damn well that the City didn't dump their lists.

****************************************************************

I'm not bragging. I've been at this for 19 years now and it's been a long, arduous haul. In the industry I work in I make chump change even down in Costa Rica now. It's all relative. I know guys who make what my company as a whole did and they are 5 years in business. I just SMFH. There are several guys who do better than I do. I never made Dt, Sgt or Lt either say nothing to brag about there either and I know of lot of guys who did get promoted.

(I included all my text BTW. Not understanding that comment.)

My point is to motivate you guys not to belittle anyone. There is enough pie out there for everyone to get a good slice but like 95% of you don't think outside the box. If I can do it so can anyone else. I had no business clout/help/loans and no college (AAS degree only). Most cops I worked with over 20 years were just lazy. Just saying facts. Not all but most. Most had no motivation and if the job is your life then so be it.

My old partner, Greg S. from 007 (1996), told me his goal was to be Lt by 20 years and he did it. God bless you Greg if you are reading. He had no clout either. He may now but he didn't in 1996. Another guy wanted make Lt and to be a Chief of police in a small town after 26 years CPD and he did it. They both worked the job. Kudos to them both.

As far as being a bad partner, I worked afternoons and by the time work rolled around 4 p.m. I was done with the day job. Sure I took a few calls after hours and did online stuff by typically my partner never had a clue what I was working on while he/she was complaining about the job, how they are stuck in the cold, shitty weather and stuck until their kid finishes college all while watching Netflix or playing video games. It used to aggravate me.

People would just laugh at me when I told them I'd be retired from CPD and be on the beach by age 50 while my kid was just a year old. They all laughed at me or rolled their eyes. I gave up trying to help partners at work who'd complain about the job but did NOTHING different each day. About the only one who took my advice was a Sgt who also got into the same business and I helped him all the way and he would be a direct competitor and still is to this day. You know how much it affected me? NONE. He is staying until 55 vs 63 for the insurance but I or a fact his kids will not be done with college. He's not letting anything stop him past 55, lol.

My point is to motivate you guys to say "Hey look there is a way out and you don't have to stay a cop, in a city that hates us, continuous FOP admins that give two shits about you and a corrupt testing system lead by incompetent bosses like ... Ron Watts for example. Oh and Ron it was great seeing your ass go to jail and lose your pension. He who laughs last...

Go to college guys. Get an advanced degree. Start a business. Do something online. There is no excuse to stay past 55 years of age on CPD (unless of course you want to) but you have to do something different each day. Ain't nobody going to hand it to you. Hey if you are comfortable in what you do then God bless you serving CPD and its citizens but cops should see the writing on the wall.

$1.1 million. Big Deal. If you are paying each of your 8 employees $75,000 per year then, with benefits, they are costing you about $110,000 each to employ. Probably a little more but I am being conservative. Now add your overhead, phones, website, call service, insurance, licensing fees, etc., you are at about $920,000. That leaves you $90,000. That doesn't include a pension or 401K plan, etc. So you aren't doing as well as if you had stayed as a police officer. Now don't come running back telling us you employees don't cost you that much. Because if you do then you are paying them shit wages and they should look elsewhere for a better paying job.

To 1/10/20 06:09 AM,

A lot of us would love to start speaking about residency but unfortunately the Crack pots on the Dept and in FOP keep towing the City line concerning residency; or, they keep spewing nonsense like "it will never happen, be careful what you wish for because your house in the City will lose money, you'll have higher property taxes and a longer commute in the suburbs, Dude and Section 8 is everywhere anyway so why leave," etc., etc.

Bunch of dummies I say. All they're interested in is selling out their current contractual protections and benefits bit by bit for a goddam retro check to do God knows what with.

Never mind though, every other major city police dept in the U.S. doesn't have residency yet we are still stuck with it because our membership won't force our Fraternal Order to fight it. It shouldn't even a question of "negotiating" the issue in our contract, just fight it in court or in the state legislature.

Officers in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, and Cicero f*cking Illinois seemed to have figured it out, maybe we will some day.

What officers in all those cities you mentioned have, has no bearing on our residency. Fighting res in deb the has been tried before and we lost. If the city won’t negotiate it, then how do you change it. The legislature isn’t going to give it to us and you can be sure the courts won’t. The Illinois Supreme Court would stop that
How do you suggest winning residency?

I can’t believe I’m saying this but it may be time to start burying some of my unregistered firearms and ammo in my backyard. I can only hope we survive a few more years...

If you feel the need to have to bury them, it’s probably about time to start using them.

The Second Amendment is a GOD given right, not a privilege bestowed upon us by the government. The Second Amendment is not about having firearms for hunting purposes, but to allow us to protect ourselves from an off the rails, tyrannical government.

The possible CPD nexus is this: Was CPD issue ammunition and/or CPDissue magazine ( assuming pistol and notbtevolver) used? I did not see this angle of the story addressed

unfounded; suspended on the ramifications. That probably doesn't ring a bell unless you were on the job about before the union. But it used to be commonplace

@1/10/2020 05:32:00 AM "And I am NOT bragging. Just telling facts. My business grossed over $1.1M and employs 8 and I now do home inspections in Costa Rica as well".

Yes you are bragging, at least admit that much. It's plain to see, "facts" or not. If you just wanted to be helpful you would have left 75 percent of your text off. Okay so you have a great life, make good money and you want to rub it in a little to those feeling stuck and frustrated in Chicago. You must have been a real joy to have as a partner.

He may or may not have been good to work with , let's face it, many people like that in the job, and it always has been. But for what he said, I think we do have other job or career options, and it does not hurt to think about that. I am considering taking computer classes or classes to get into another field. I have volunteered for other organizations, read job blogs, talk to people about their careers. It's not bad to consider other options. The dept and many supervisors would like you to believe you will not do well anywhere else. , But is is possible. There is life after and away from CPD. And it would not hurt to let the bosses and Dept. To remember that.

And you think his comments changed any of them. He even said he got tired of nobody listening to him. So he comes on the blog and continues. Believe me I’m retired and know plenty of retirees who are successful and living the life. All of who could move to Costa RICO if they chose.
