Beck sent out a Dept wide email and the media reported this before everyone in the family was notified. Real classy!

Prayers to the family, so sorry for your loss.

Deepest condolences to her family and our family in blue. I don't know why,I'm sure she felt she had her reasons that I and everyone else will never understand.

Please seek help. Try to remember that whatever pain, anger, sadness, shame, etc. is only temporary and that there are people who care about you and want you in this life! Godspeed and much love to all-

When will this Dept realize that what they are doing - depressing streaming videos, brochures and adding people to the dept run EAP isn’t working.

Not sure how dark you have to slip to consider this option and God knows how bad this Department has become...but don’t let the bastards win. Remember your life has worth and people around you are better off with you being around. Prayers to the detective’s family.

Really sad. Nice person, hard worker, funny. It’s a tragic loss. Some of us have had those dark thoughts, it’s not easy to find your way out when you get there. Sadly, when one thing goes wrong in your life, everything else seems to follow. And that’s when depression makes its way in. It sneaks up on you and it can be literally physically daunting to pull yourself out of it. Anyone depressed or having thoughts, find a doctor or call EAP. You won’t get psyched for merely seeing someone. But once there, you need to do some heavy lifting and be honest. If you truly are having suicidal thoughts. You can’t reverse the finality of it. Forget the mindless assholes who might shame you if you get psyched. Anyone that would is purely stupid or a sociopath. This job isn’t as forward thinking as they want to convince us, but the best thing out of it, is time off to find your way if you need it. If you are struggling with the possibility of getting psyched, find a reason to get on the medical but still go see a psychiatrist and/or therapist. Please!

So sad. The question we should be asking is why is suicide so high among Chicago LE. Rest in peace. I'm sure most are suffering from post traumatic stress.sad part is leadership in most cities don't care about the cops.

Old Retired Guy Here, Again !!! So terribly sad.I did not know this person or any of the circumstances. I just wanted to chime in with this. The CPD can be a brutal and demeaning place. You do one thing wrong, and it will never be forgotten. The hundred things you do correctly, will never even be noticed. Try not to ever let yourself be the target of some of your "Bully Boy" co-workers. Be a good person, and stay true to a good moral code. Find a couple of like minded guys and girls that feel the same, and stay close to them. I have been retired now, twenty years. The people who carried so much weight on the job, are either really messed up, and lonely, or dead.
I stayed away from the tavern crowd. Enjoyed my family. I tried to exercise a lot. It worked for me.
Best Wishes, Always !

Worked same watch with her in Area 1. Was a “work friend” of mine. Lost touch when she went to financial crimes. Nice girl and a hard worker. RIP Patty. Nobody knows why this happens, but it’s not the Department’s fault. We get roll calls, emails, flyers posted on bulliten boards about EAP and how “You are not alone”. These incidents are personal, relationship, or financial problems. We can ask, call, text, visit someone we are worried about. Encourage them to call EAP, but in the end we are powerless if they are in such a dark place. About the only thing that impresses me about the Dept is the outreach they have from EAP and the Chaplains Unit. There is help out there. Please take it.

Something this drastic, is not something that just happened. It's been brewing for a long time. The upbringing, and much more. People try to blame relationship problems, or a financial situation, but for a level headed person this is not the end all. This is much deeper, and anyone close has felt the brew. I pray for the ones left behind that have been dealing with that brew and now have to deal with the guilt that they shouldn't have to. Mental health issues are worse than most diseases, because it kills people around them.

the department does a great job of making a working copper feel empty, frustrated and impotent. The repeated barrage of EAP materials is so half hearted that it does more harm than good. The working copper knows only the day to day crap heaved at them especially from inside the organization. The street being crap is expected but the consistent lack of support from inside is disheartening. The lack of support thick as mud

While I agree with some of your thoughts about this, the guilt those left behind may struggle with- you seem a bit to quick to blame her & others who end their lives. I’ve been in her shoes, so close & yet, somehow by some grace, it didn’t happen. When you are in that place, believe it or not many do very covertly reach out for help. I had a friend, whom I comforted many times, literally not answer her door or phone when I was reaching for help. She was too busy with a new romance to be bothered. It was the hardest thing to do, ask for help and as much as people like to say they will be there for you- they aren’t. Despite what many think, most don’t commit or attempt suicide as revenge or to punish others. Mostly, you feel alone and for some of us, you may actually not have family . You are usually so physically depressed that you are in pain and want it to end. So many around you make you feel like it’s a choice. It’s not. Depression usually is the result of not weakness or being able to handle one disappointment. It’s usually the result of multiple losses, stressors and other factors. You have no idea of the amount of strength many of these people have while performing the balancing act to get up every day and appear normal. More times than not, these are the people who are constantly doing for others, being there for others, absorbing everyone else’s problems and emptied out at the end of it all.

Do seek help but do not let the medical section know. Unfortunately you’ll have to do it on your own time. If you go on the medical, there’s a good chance the department will put you on a mandatory psych and strip you pending results even if your doc clears you. What a way to help a person in a dark state.

EAP and the Chaplains Ministry was supposed to come to Central Investigations Monday morning for those that may need someone to talk to. I find it very sad that neither one showed up. There are people in this unit that are visibly distraught, it would have been very helpful to the members if one, if not both, of these groups had showed up as everyone expected them too.

A full year ago, I seriously contemplated killing myself. Im retired for almost 5 years and suffice it to say financial, health, and a purpose to want to be alive were the factors involved. Thank God there were people on the job, off the job, and never even on the job that heard me and intervened. I wont say who, you ALL know who you are and I am. Don't do it. PLEASE don't do it. There ARE people who give a shit even if you cant see them or don't know them. Don't quit. The pain WILL and CAN be alleviated without going to black...I KNOW.

Please seek help, but do not let the medical section know. Do it on your own. I personally believe that as long as the EAP is comprised of sworn members of this department , many will hurt in silence. If the job is my stress, I might not want to sit down with someone from the job and tell them that I’m contemplating killing myself? The goal would be to find outside outlets. I can imagine that some are reluctant to talk to EAP because most of the counselors are sworn members and the Sergeant of EAP sits at Personnel? .... and that’s where Fitness for duty recommendations are from. I jthink that supervisors need to have more training on recognizing when there is a problem, and addressing employee issues. The problem with that is some don’t intervene because some don’t know how to be leaders, some are apart of the problem and some are problem employees themselves. In the past five months, the department signed me up for four mandatory Use of Force related trainings and 0 stress management trainings. With the number of CPD suicides, Stress Management Trainings should be mandatory for all employees just like Use of Force. However, the Stress Management Sessions are only held annually and they are voluntary and have limited spaces. This department has to get in front of this. RIP Patty

Friend of the family here. Her children were notified two hours after the email. The family was frantic. She wasn't depressed and no one missed anything. Her wife's a doctor. Officer suicides are more complex. Have compassion - you never know who will read your comments.
