Second COVID-19 Death

  • Another Chicago Police Department member who tested positive for COVID-19 died on Friday, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The victim, a police supervisor, is the second department employee to lose his life to the coronavirus.

Sources said he was a sergeant in the Area Central detective division on the South Side, and he got sick from the disease last month. The department has not yet officially released his identity, but city records show he was 56 and started with the CPD in January 1995.
Arrangements pending.

RIP Sergeant.

Two men in their 50’s. This disease is not dangerous for 80 and 90 year olds. ANYTHING is dangerous for that age group. This disease is dangerous to 40 and 50 year olds. And higher percentage of men vs. women. Be careful. Take precautions. Nobody else is looking out for you so look out for yourself.

I can see that this is news and that people want to
know if it was line of duty acquired.
But let's not get into mass hysteria. It will NOT take the
entire force, just like it will not kill all the doctors and
nurses. Some cases are worse than others and even the
epidemologists don't fully understand THIS virus.
I hear media ads from big companies and small businesses
like nothing ever happened. We're going to come out the
other side here. It's just a matter of time.
What is wrong is Anthony Fauci dictating that the U.S.
should be entirely shut down because of hot pockets in
NYC (concentrated population).

City hall and CPD very dangerously playing with out lives.

The new Commander has addressed roll calls several times on days and each time he has said the same thing in so many words, “It’s tough now, look out for yourself, family & each other- there are too many people up on this floor at one time. We ain’t checking swiping, we ain’t looking for you on the floor. Do what you need to do and get off the floor. Take your department phone & work wherever you got to but not here. Just answer your phone when we call you.” He’s said it several times. If grown men & women are too stupid to figure it out for themselves than its on them. You have department phones. You can make calls on your cases from anywhere. You can type your narratives on a lap top from anywhere and transfer it to USB & then CHRIS when you come in. If you can’t get it done at home, because kids are home then sit in your car in the parking lot and do it! Unless you have someone in custody or are waiting for interviews, there’s no reason to be on the floor for more than a few hours at a time. I never knew the new Commander before he came to A/C, barely said two words to him since, but what I did notice is he’s said all of this as early as 2-3 weeks ago. Yet, all you idiots hang around waiting to catch it. You stand around sharing food, just STUPID! Don’t put it on the Commander. He’s addressed the roll calls that existed as they did, but he’s said - “TOO MANY PEOPLE HERE!” GO!

In your car. Not necessary to congregate in a roll call room

We have two people gone. Many that were exposed

No sanitizing properly if the districts

Just read that. FOP. Did testing. Thursday and Friday
At FOP
Who got tested. Not my husband not my daughter

Who who who.

If they were able to set that up. Then they need to do it
For all. Not just those. 100

So set it up there. So everyone. I mean everyone. Can come and get tested
Find the money to do it
This is duty related. Step up FOP.

“He worked his way forward to become one of the most respected detectives in the Chicago Police Department,” Beck said at the news conference.

Deputy Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan called Martin an “excellent detective” who “cleared a lot of murders.”

He sent his children a “police tip of the day” about how to handle different assignments on the job, Deenihan said. He was also a dedicated teacher for detectives in his division, he said.

“He just wanted to teach his detectives,” Deenihan said.

Keep Superintendent ,First Deputy and Area Chiefs
Many qualified Lieutenants can run District and Units , perk a city , car , adjustable hours and a yearly bonus , based on performance.
Do you really want future Sergeants that scored under 70% , suoervisising Police Officers ?
You seem smart and would want qualified SUPERVISORS ON CPD.

We have to expect that any and all have been exposed to the virus. Therefore anyone in a high risk group should be furloughed. Police and first responders are not given PPE for viral contagions, and the department should be legally liable for exposing those with risk. For example, anyone with a CPAP machine is in a risk group, and we know plenty that use them. CPD cannot assume that a desk job equals a safe job, as if it ever has. This virus is nothing in the microbial scheme of things. The FOP needs to use this panic to move for proper PPE and clean working conditions throughout the department. Working in an office with mold issues, asbestos and inadequately maintained HVACs is a hazardous working environment, and needs to be addressed as such. Remember Legionnaire's disease? I'd expect that the HVAC systems are full of coronavirus, and whatever other microbes that are waiting till immune systems are compromised enough to allow development. Let us hope that this man's family is taken care of, if not they should sue the department for his being in an unsafe working condition resulting in death. Wrongful death lawsuits can cut both ways, and employees should use this option, after all, they Community will be suing should any of their members expire in lockup

It's Not the FOP job to even ensure that we have these items but because the City doesn't give a shit the FOP has stepped up to the plate. They even arranged to have Roseland hospital staff set up in front of the Union Hall for those who are having symptoms who want to get Tested. Maybe you should get involved and see what you can do instead of just holding your hand out

He will be missed. I had the good fortune to work in the office with him. He was always trying to teach new detectives and the nicest thing I liked about him was how he spoke about his children. He was proud of them. Proud they were on the job. He showed me photos of them and adoringly spoke about his daughter & all her interests. There was genuine love in his voice when he spoke of them, no complaining, just love.

You can mitigate close contacts risks pretty well with basic hygiene like hand washing and masks of some sort.

The hvac issue is more complicated. Based on the experience of the plague ships, it appears the circulating air in the hvac system might have caused viral particles to stay in the air longer than they might otherwise have.

It seems likely that this experience might force a rethink of tight building construction that has been forced on us in the name of energy conservation. I could see a decision to shut off the A/C for the summer in favor of using what fans they have to bring in fresh air. Could make for some warm buildings this summer.

EVERYONE SHOULD WALK OFF THE JOB , NO MASK OR PROTECTION FOR ANY OFFICER , SCREW The CITY , They haven't even mentioned anything about getting Masks for anyone , And again Where the HELL is the Damn Union on this. Time to have some BALLS and fight back

4/11/2020 06:21:00 PM

If you "walk off the job," you'll have balls but no job. They gave everyone in my district a mask. I suspect the same is true across the city. It's in your "PPE kit" that the recruits assembled for you.

Worked with Cliff back in our younger years in 005 on the 3rd watch. Cliff had a great sense of humor and knew how to talk to people. I believe he was a bus driver for CTA before becoming the police and he had a healthy work ethic and enjoyed helping people. When he became a detective in Area 2 he always had his face buried in his screen reading and typing away. It’s a shame he didn’t make it to retirement because he really was one of the good guys that come onto the job and man he deserved a better fate.

Any cop that has the age and time to pension out should be mentally evaluated if you still are showing up to work. Get out while the getting is good. Or at least hit the medical until this shit blows over.

A word to the wise: if anyone at Area Central, or anywhere else tested negative for Covid 19, and are still experiencing cold symptoms days later you should seek retesting, stat. New evidence out of Advocate Health Systems-Lutheran General, Christ, Illinois Masonic, etc. shows many “false negative” test results that subsequently show “positive” for the virus upon second tests days later.

Ok enough.
We want and need our own testing site
Mayor on national t v saying she is seeing that ppe is all out there and she is seeing that we are protected

Liar

All you news media. Who read this. Prove her wrong
No you can’t
If you want to report something. Go out get the numbers
Expose the mayor telling lies

Still not everyone has the ppe

District. Squads. Not sanitized.
It’s up to the individual to do the best to clean the car before they get in

FOP. Move your ass. Get the testing site running for all of us
Not the 100. You did last week
And by the way. Who were they
We’re they officers who were exposed?
Who tell us all

Stay safe and push for. Roll calls not inside the district
She cares solittle for police and fire

Supervisors are overpaid on this job!! Especially the commanders, chiefs , and superintendent! They are stealing money from our pension. Pensions should be capped at lts pay.

Ok that’s a common opinion. But why do you have to post that on this thread? You have no class. Idiot.

There is a reason that our more enlightened forebears built things, cooked and interacted in the days before antibiotics. High ceilings with fans and exterior access are much to inhabit than today's germ traps. Just like my grandmother would never consider eating raw spinach, as she knew how to grow it, we have enabled convenience and now fear. Kicking out felons because of their microbial rights? In that case vigilance committees will be just as warranted. EMS personnel need to be tested regularly because being involved with the 'public' means to be exposed to whatever the public might have. And buildings need to be evaluated on the same level. If we can't be back to 1890s architectural practicalities, then we need to have procedures in effect to mitigate the costs of 'progress', otherwise this will be a never-ending carousel of fear economic depression

Pay Differential:
You have a valid point there.
When I first started at the VA in the late 80s,
Front Line Supervisors were the same GS level as the
employees (i.e. same college degree). The only "benefit"
to being in "management" was they worked M-F, daylight
hours and were not eligible to work O.T. (example: they
could not instigate work back-ups then turn around and
get paid to reduce the backlog). They made the same
salary as the people they supervised. By and large, these
were lazy people who could not work a full day "on the
outside."
Then, a new hiring policy went into effect to attract more
line workers because the Govt. paid less than the private
sector. The rank and file got "locality pay" increases and the
supervisors got bumped up a notch on the GS scale.
So I know about the "differential for laziness" and the payoffs
of being in management.

Sorry about the loss. What really pisses me off is that the area central commander has a roll call with easily over 100 detectives. All on top of each other and thinks it’s fine. You fucking idiot. You endanger every cop and their families and think it’s ok. Since I’ve been on this shit job every moron supervisor says it’s about your family. But they keep providing it’s about making them look good. By the way, f you too Ozzie.

4/11/2020 06:36:00 AM

Most detectives were in the field so stop whining and man up. The commander is a great guy and he addressed all who were there, you had the option to leave the area long before the announcement and you should’ve been gone by then. You were a problem on each watch. Wear your mask, wash your hands and stfu. You have a cushy spot so what else do you want?

I'm glad a couple of people brought this out here.

Too tired to go back and find specific references right now, but there is a LARGE body of material dealing with hospitals, sanatoriums, nurseries for kids - there was a "Chicago Fresh-Air Hospital" once.

SUNLIGHT (UV) and FRESH AIR were always the way to go in life in general. How many apts., houses did I clean, working with chlorine bleach and hot water with all the windows open and 20 degrees outside. Icy wind blowing through the place, one end to the other. All the closet and cupboard doors and drawers open too, the under-sink cabinet, everything. I was moving too fast to get cold; by the time you got everything scrubbed, and started to wind down and feel a bit chilly, then you'd start closing again.

It seems to be a European/Germanic thing. The duvet, the down-filled quilt, was so that you could sleep in toasty warmth with a window cracked so the room was filled with cold, fresh air.

One very real problem in offices, factories, dwellings arises when you have a different predominant culture whose credo is "Too much A on me!" You will never be able to clean or air out; the concept is unknown, hated, and even five minutes of work like that will absolutely not be tolerated. People will act as if you intend to leave the thing open all winter.

Any open window will be slammed shut (even when it's over 80) with the cry, "I keepin' the musty out!"

I really did hear that.

Actually, you are keeping the musty IN...

Now, when fighting a really bad respiratory virus in, say, a nursing home - something that drifts around and infects like crazy - you often CANNOT get fresh air into the place. Even one window cracked on a soft, warm, lovely spring day literally brings five or six people running to demand that (someone else) close it up tight again.

Varies from place to place - but with a dominant workforce whose collective thermostats are set for 90 deg. and 90% humidity, you have to breathe lots of s__t, cockroach dander, oil vapor, copy machine fumes - varies according to the type of operation, but it's never healthy.

Mommy, where does asthma come from? *kaf*

...and now Covid-19.

Remember -our strength lies in our diversity.

*kaf*

Mills was a sergeant just about 6 years ago. Merit Lt., merit Capt. and now merit commander of a detective area. Oh and he spent a second in units in all those capacities. Places you and I will never ever be considered for. Who does this guy have dirt on??? He’s no god’s gift to police work or detective work, that’s for sure.

Perhaps he knows how to keep his mouth shut unlike you. He’s approachable and that’s half of the battle and it also sets him apart from many. Leave the hard work to his detectives.
