SWAT Standoff
- A five-hour long standoff with a distraught young man standing on the CTA train tracks brandishing a knife has ended with the man being taken into custody on Saturday night.
The emegency [sic], which began shortly after 3 p.m., and ended just after 8 p.m., caused "major'' delays to Red Line service and snarled traffic on the Dan Ryan Expressway as first responders worked to resolve the issue.
We saw a bunch of early footage with traffic rushing by the scene, blowing horns and flipping off either the responding cops or the individual. But it was all resolved peaceably and professionally, without loss of life as nearly every one of these situations is. Good job all around, though you'll probably never hear it from anyone except other cops.
UPDATE: Now being reported that he died of blood loss following a number of self inflected stab wounds.

Good point. What would have seemed like rougher and crueler action may well have saved the poor fellow's life.
Maybe he would have been doomed later on anyway, but the fact is there can be real truth (not the BS "my truth" variety) in the adage "cruel to be kind."

Does anyone notice a stand off pattern building the past few weeks? Couldn’t possibly have anything to do with this ridiculous lockdown? Not saying that in this incident or the Edens truck driver incident that those people weren’t already unstable, but you actually add more pressure & further destabilize already vulnerable people’s lives by omitting just daily choices from their lives. I have a brother for whom Church is his lifeline. And no online church or 10 people only to a mass isn’t going to work for him. His church is about the only thing that keeps him even remotely stable as a person - that and his cats. He already takes medications for his bipolar, but for him just the loss of his Sunday mass has had a huge impact on his life in a very negative way. He was almost unconsolable the other day after one of his cats passed away at home and he had to wait 3 hours just to drop it with vet for cremation.
For anyone with the privilege (e.g. Gov. Fat Fuck) to send his wife & kids off to Florida, they wouldn’t understand the toll their politically motivated orders are taking on people nor do they care. Those lives don’t matter because you can’t add them to the COVID death toll. Pritzker has to be the worst Governor Illinois has had and that’s not saying much when we’ve sent 4 to jail since the 1960s.
I can see the criticism that will be coming to the CPD for not rushing in and saving this man from bleeding to death. On one hand, a five hour standoff for a man with a knife is a bit too long, but on the other hand that is what the progressives have demanded over the years, " Deescalation". Think of all of the time, money, and resources wasted on this clown! More importantly, it sets a dangerous precedent for those looking for their 15 minutes of fame. They need new command staff in SWAT...The Lt in that unit is way over his head. No leadership, no training for his guys..The Unit is already looking at 15 lawsuits..it's time for me to go..10 Glocks missing,1 fully auto rifle missing and a 40 mm launcher...no reports,cr's and weapons still missing..what a joke
The unit is so messed up that bosses are putting there people in place.We have one officer with 3 years on the job put in the WarRoom that has no idea of what he's doing and another with 6 years same deal..The SWAT Lt is afraid to tell these bosses NO because in the back hishis mind he thinks that these guys are going to make him..The Unit is really bad right now..no training and lack of leadership

Cops did the best they could in a professional way. The guy was determined to die and in the end he got what he wanted.

I'm siding with the "they should have just rushed in" camp. If the only one being held hostage is the mental, go get him. The only safety you should worry about is ours.
