More 12s?

At some point, are the "unions" going to say, "Enough!"?
  • Labor Day is my 16th consecutive day with RDO cancelled and I know that a lot of officers are doing the same....aren't there any labor laws??? How can this be legal? What's our Union doing?? And now I'm hearing this next weekend might be day off cancelled again...so am I going to have to work 26 consecutive days? This is clearly abuse, Mayor, and you should have at least that much intellect to realize it. I didn't sign up for this!
Supposedly, there was a draft order that kept the Department on 12s but gave everyone their days off....you know, treating us like actual human beings.

Carter said, "No" because (A) he's a moron (B) Groot said no and (C) everyone is afraid of getting caught short again instead of actually planning to have a quick response force available in the form of Tact teams and those Units who choose to volunteer to live outside of the Contract.

12s for what? For a protest of 5 people. This shit department and incompetent leaders who have never worked a real day in their life need to get this clown show under control. Enough is enough already. We have families too. I hope to see more people leave this department and glad to see people retire. F this city and job. And hey Groot FUCK YOU and brownstain too!

The Reasons for 12s into end of Year? FU lori lighthead screwed up beyond repair.
Hotel occupancy ,downtown area in the 20s % last week ..break even needs at least 50%
Crain's offers this frightening info ..downtown apartment rentals drop to lowest level Since 2002.... b/c of riots/looting.
Surge in supply of Homes listed for sale in downtown area ,after looting, now at 15 months sales supply..River North Area has 12 month supply of homes for sale....Rest of Chicago has 3.1 month supply of home for sale. Chicago is the Detroit

People have to realize this is as good as it's going to get. The best and brightest that run this department have no clue what they're doing. Therefore all they can do is throw manpower and money at the problem with no real plan in place. Think about it. Forcing everyone to work 12 hours with no days off made sense when looting and rioting was occurring. But to have this as the game plan week after week is ridiculous.
Can we please get someone with military expertise who can devise troop management and institute an actual, working plan

If you have an issue

exhaustion is a medical type issue specially for older officers.

GO ON THE MEDICAL

keep in mind the city has been giving checks for a lot of years called duty availability. yes i do know they were just a raise that is not pensionable but they added alot of wording in the contract like notification by phone etc etc.

Again you have to take care of yourself first if you think the FOP gonna come in and save you it AINT happening the contract got us by the balls.

strange HOW you said you work all those day yet took none of your own time off.
take those weekdays off and come back on the weekend and hit the cash box.

Stress is also a medical condition but you may need a doctors note I know its to hard to get one.

Quit answering your phone on your off time. Unless you in one of those special unit and fear a good dumping.

I think OSHA should be contacted. They’re all about the health and safety of workers. They’ll probably also force the city to furnish outhouses and washing stations at fixed post As well as shade and seating. There’s laws that govern this stuff and a few phone calls from the concerned troops is over due.. hell, truck drivers and pilots are limited on how many hours They can work in a day.. Even pilots who fly firefighting planes are limited and they’re battling actual deadly disasters are limited.

Don’t wait til somebody dies due to exhaustion or makes a deadly mistake.. pick up the phone and make that call.. you’re the only thing between life or death.

Speaking of Abuse... officers in 011 treated worst then shit this weekend. The rdo canceled and 3rd watch people were on foot patrol the entire tour, on side streets. The commander had strip No Parking paper signs put up on residential streets. All which happened to be around the property he owns. He ordered that ALL officers of foot have a parker and anov book, and had the LT’s driving around with a box of parking tickets passing them out. The next day at roll call there was an inspection, to make sure everyone had their ticket books. Lt, captain and commander were driving around ordering officers to write these tickets. Needless to say This resulted several Confrontations, near 10-1’s. So No RDO, 12 hour shifts and they put officers in dangerous situations, yell at them to write tickets, clear corners, block streets. And Not once did he say thank you to single person, or even drop off a single bottle of water to any officer.

One Day Rest in Seven (ODRISA)

Illinois state law requires that employers give employees at least 24 hours of rest in every calendar week starting Sunday and ending the following Saturday. This rest requirement does not apply to certain types of workers, including: FLSA white collar exempt employees, state and federal government workers, part time employees who work 20 or fewer hours per week, agricultural and mining employees, seasonal employees engaged in agricultural canning, and watchmen and security guards.

How about that for a load of crap.

You guys should bring in OSHA or lawyer up and then go on strike due to working conditions. Add in a (true) claim that your bosses are creating an unsafe work environment. Yeah, ‘no-strike’ law, there’s also a no-abuse-employees law.

It won’t happen. Too bad: if you went out for 2 weeks (and negotiated behind the scenes to prevent the Guard from getting activated until the last day or 2) you’d give the city a great choice: Finish self-immolation so things can change (maybe), or pinch themselves and decide that they want law not anarchy.

“They want someone to snap.” Shame if that was the Mayor’s and also AG’s security details.

If this continues into next weekend and beyond then the FOP/PBPA need to step up as unions and start doing something. I appreciate the fact that J.C. wants to see Trump re-elected but this guy needs to start doing the job he was elected to do and stop worrying about the presidential election. Other than the mass violence/riots/looting from the 4 or so days at the end of May and start of June, there has been no emergency. I have never seen so many officers at the mental breaking point as I've seen lately. Officers are absolutely exhausted and the family/personal lives of many are in shambles. Not to mention the absolute waste of taxpayer money to have all of us sitting around in front of closed businesses week after week doing nothing. There has been no f#$@g emergency going on to keep continuing with this crap. FOP, PLEASE DO something!

Here is a suggestion from the retired ranks. Work all that OT they throw your way. It won't be available forever, soon there will be almost no OT . Take that money and max out your deferred comp., see a financial advisor and identify other places you can stash that money.

Normally I advise young cops to buy back their military time, but I don't think investing in your retirement system is such a good idea.

Don't buy a new truck, or that vacation house. Take the money you can't shelter and follow Warren Buffetts advice for people like us and put it into index funds.

Sounds like your city pension is not going to be what you expected. Does anyone really think that gambling and dope sales are going to fund a pension fund? The profit from the dope sales will be plowed back into rehab programs for the new gambling and dope addicts.

The democrats don't need your voting block and so they hate you. They are not going to raise taxes give you a gold plated retirement when so many of "the community" have no retirement at all. (Of course, if you don't work, why would expect a retirement? Ghetto privilege I guess.) We are going back to the old days when retired cops were expected to get a night watchman job to survive.

Take this gift and do something with it.

You need to take care of yourself on and off the streets.

Aches and pains need treatment, you should be wise enough to figure how to deal with that beyond a tub soak in eucalyptus.

If FOP doesn’t already have a labor attorney on this matter I’d be surprised, even if it’s for additional compensation above the Contract manipulation by Larri’s Sanctuary City law department.
If the City allows and encourages disorder, they’re allowed to extend working hours on “what-ifs” and then judge YOU for lack of probable cause, compassion or tolerance?

Maybe you need to re-evaluate your life and your family situation. Are you willing to give up your marriage, family, mental health and possessions to remain at a job that treats you like shit? Your future and health is at risk already. If you’re willing to let this job cause a divorce, you’re a selfish fool. You need to look for other employment opportunities..

There’s lots of federal law enforcement jobs around the country. US Border Patrol is always hiring and the pay and benefits are good.. Chicago is getting flushed so why stick around?

This is once in a career overtime because the city made a mistake. Labor Day overtime cost them roughly 6-8 million in overtime and that’s for one day of OT. If your sick stay home !

Welcome to 003, this is always the case.

011 is a complete joke. We are spread all over the district without washroom or even water. Commander and captain have zero people skills and all they do is walk by you and give you dirty look. They are incapable to relate simplest thing to the blue shirts; all they do is wishper to each other ears then jump on LT to work people even more. Have mercy on 011 and Promote them already.

9/08/2020 03:38:00 AM

This is also why you have a 6th & 7th day provision in your contract.

Maybe I'm wrong but isn't duty availability for instances like NATO, 9/11, the recent riots, world series, super bowls, etc. Unique events where changes of shifts and or cancelled days off are needed to stop or prevent specific articulable circumstances where officers' change in shifts are, for a limited time, needed?
It seems as if the city/dept. is violating the contract by implementing a work schedule that disregards our agreed upon 4-2 (9 hr) schedule. They are mandating 12 hour shifts on random weekends, and days off being cancelled for those day off groups affected each weekend where no identifiable unique events have been articulated.
One more thing, has Cantazara addressed this recently? He was very vocal about this initially, filing motions against the city but I haven't seen anything recently from him.

Cook County can come in and police Chicago. That is what Camden NJ did - they "defunded" and ended up with something like Monterey Security standards...fewer and lower-paid ofc. &c. There is a lot of info on this. Doesn't work too well. "Send them to pass out candy bars."

In other news, an association of left-wing organizations is currently planning out strategies for what they believe would be a political dogfight should Joe Biden win November's election by a small margin.

The group, comprised of more than 50 groups, including MoveOn, Color of Change and the American Federation of Teachers, calls itself the Fight Back Table and recently launched their Democracy Defense Nerve Center.

Expect more 12 hour days in future. Note the American Federation of Teachers in there to stir it up. And how just how much of ones property tax goes to the rotten school system in this city.

'Maybe I'm wrong but isn't duty availability for instances like NATO, 9/11, the recent riots, world series, super bowls, etc.'

Your wrong. Duty availability was a shift differential. It turned into to a non-pensionable and not used in non-flsa overtime calculation pay raise for everyone. The city gave everyone a raise without increasing ot costs and pension costs (city has to contribute if pensionable).

I know duty availability is now pensionable, but this was "bargained for" in contract negotiations or arbitration. The inspector general and elected officials can "change" the narrative as much as they want, us old-timers learned the truth from old-timers when we started.

You're waking up and your intuition is correct. IMO, Larri 2 Leftfeet is taking her orders from her fellow socialist-communist comrades in power in Washington, DC and the demoncrat-socialist-communist handlers that control DC, (the money guys). The agenda has multiple goals, one of which is to directly and indirectly allow anarchy and chaos prompting passive defunding of the police through attrition. She isn't intelligent enough to make the agenda, but she is competent enough to enact the anti-American policies within Chicago her political masters are demanding.

Sixth and Seventh workday is basically worthless in these recent situations because they’re only canceling weekends. May and June plenty of people made out with it, but not much recently. Seems great at first glance, but when they’re already paying you time and a half, There no benefit.

In the long run and if this keeps going on, yes, there will be some of that. But, if your spouse divorces you because you worked too many hours this Summer, then there are greater problems going on within your marriage than you care to admit.

Absolutely correct in your analysis. Seems to be quite a few posting who don't have an awareness that many police officers in other jurisdictions have it 1000% more difficult, Portland being a good example as well as DC.

Hit the medical for 3 days. Do it during the week between these silly ass 12 hour days. It’s a legit reason to be tired, just don’t be stupid during that time off. Give this department zero reasons to fuck with you. Stay home, sleep, order a nice dinner in with the family...don’t Care if you have to do it once every month until these bosses knock it off. Time to talk her language: Our argument lies in the legal/contractual definition of “ Emergency” . Without the elements of an emergency, this Overtime needs to be voluntary or part of a pre-determined job requirement on a detail/specialized unit. (as in, previously spelled out in the nojo)!

As for the rest of us, regular Patrol Officers-on a watch-in rough districts, we are getting fucked!!! We are seeing more than 12 hours most days. Its been an operational/logistical disaster eliminating 3rd watch in cars.. it wasnt spelled out in a nojo and We don't have our weekends and nice spots waiting for us on the flip side ., FOP MAKE IT VOLUNTARY ONLY, ASAP !!

If anyone can get documentation to the union that the department is planning on continuing this nonsense, it will be tremendously helpful in negotiations and in the effort to show that this is not a emergency mobilization, but a routine schedule.

This is also why you have a 6th & 7th day provision in your contract.

No, you only have this provision because it was bargained for - the benefit of the bargain.

No this wasn't bargained, there was a lawsuit filed by the FOP Lawyers, so that is why we have the 6th and 7th day provision in the contract. But, we still lose if the 6th and 7th day lands on your RDO's. You will only get time and a half, even though the 6th and 7th day is your RDO's cancelled. So, the city still wins. The city never bargained with the FOP regarding the 6th and 7th day, they had to be told by a Judge during the lawsuit. The city has not bargained fairly with the FOP since the Daley era and that wasn't even very fare bargaining during the Daley era either. Rahm and Lori just do not even try to be fair. We are in serious trouble with Lori, she is a pure hater.
