More Blame to go Around?

  • Hours after a night of social media-fueled looting ravaged the Magnificent Mile and other retail corridors on August 10, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Police Supt. David Brown spoke with the media. “Criminals took to the streets with confidence that there’ll be no consequences for their actions,” Brown said, laying blame at the feet of Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx.

Lightfoot echoed Brown’s theme, which focused on alleged weak prosecution of looters and rioters during another crime wave in late May and early June. “We can’t continue to allow this to happen,” Lightfoot said. “for people to believe that there is no accountability through our criminal justice system…We need the prosecution and we need the courts to step up and do their part.”

Less than 24 hours later, attorney’s from the city’s own law department dropped charges against a man who was arrested inside a looted Foot Locker on May 31.

Since then, city attorneys — who report to Lightfoot, not to Foxx — have dropped charges against scores of people that police arrested during riots and looting between May 30 and June 1, according to court records.
People often forget - and the media studiously ignores - the fact there are two sets of prosecutors at court most days:
  • States Attorneys (for misdemeanors and felonies)
  • Corporation Counsel (for Ordinance violations)
And as CWB notes, Corp Counsel has been dropping charges at what appears to be a higher-than-normal rate, contributing to the "no prosecution = no consequences" that is fueling the disregard for the law, and refusing to answer for it:
  • Despite Brown’s and Lightfoot’s calls for vigorous prosecution of looting and riot offenders, city attorneys have tossed uprising-related charges for at least 50 defendants since the August looting outbreak, according to court records reviewed by CWBChicago.

But the city doesn’t want to talk about it.

Reached for information about the dismissals and internal policies, a city spokesperson said, “the Law Department does not comment on its prosecutorial decisions.”
Don't get us wrong. Crimesha is still about as useful as an inflatable dart board and should answer to voters in November, but Groot's Corp Counsel has a bunch to answer for also.

When Juveniles are arrested on City Charges they cannot be sent to Juvenile Court because there are no city attorneys there. Lock up a Juv on a MCC and it's a waste of time.

The three most responsible for crime rise is Foxx, Dart, and Preckwinkle. No matter how much they spin Preckwinkle and Dart shut down more then half jail and Dart even pushed for no cash bail in 2014 before Foxx was even in picture adding to the damage.

I hope Pat O'Brien defeats Foxx and fires every assistant state's attorney in the office.

On a related note, Friday 006 had something like 8-10 gun arrests. Of those, 3 were on bond for gun charges, including one arrested for a gun on August 15, and one was on parole for a gun. That's just one day.

For those who remember, we used to charge gun arrests for "failure to register" their handguns.

Out of all those arrests, over all of those years we did that, I don't remember a single instance of the City attorney prosecuting for failing to register a handgun.....

It's as if they knew that said municipal code was unconstitutional.....

The City attorney at misdemeanor court had to be the easiest job. I hardly remember them prosecuting anything, and if they did, the punishment was a fine usually paid on the spot.

As far as I can recall and know, there never has been any consequences for being convicted of a city criminal ordinance, not even a fine. They are routinely dismissed in court. Most of the time the officer who wrote the citation or signed the complaint does not appear. The real problem here is why were these rioters charged with a city ordinance in the first place?

All these assholes looting charged with “unlawful gathering” ordinance violations seem like a mass lawsuit waiting to happen. The narratives avoided the looting portion of why they were actually locked up. Some shit heads looting at the CVS in MTG could spin that into constitutional rights being violated. Override any felony approval at the detective level and stick them with the class 2 felony-let the court figure it out. Everyone knows they’ll drop charges but at least they’re covered on the city level an can shift blame to kim

It's not unusual in cases of mass arrests like this for judges to find people not guilty if there is even a hint of a problem in the case. Maybe the city just decided it wasn't worth the effort in these cases and decided to drop the charges to avoid having the judges do it for them.

Standard answer by a CC spokesman, FakeNews Media will let this fizzle out and besides Lyin’Larri Larri won’t answer.

Someone needs a civics lesson in Larri’s Law Department, despite what code of silence orders they’re under.
The government works for the taxpayer. They not only a moral obligation but a duty to answer for their failures in public safety, not limited to the CPD having to release without charging when politicians intercede.

No comment means they are hiding internal memos.
Any whistleblower forthcoming?

Now where is Looting in the City Code, Title 8 anyway? Were Trespassing, Inciting Riots, Disorderly the standard violations? Was the destitute City worried about having to collect a few dollars in fines or having to incarcerate for not less than 10 days?
And Who - ordered ordinance complaints over State statutes ?

Any downtown merchant or association should be furious as well as their insurance company.

Back in the 90s we had a good Corp Counsel at branch 29. We would write city charges over state where possible because she would get them fined and the judge would hold them to it. Went back to business as usual when she was transferred.

Problem appears to be Fox, Preckwinkle, Evans and Dart...Anyone who has lived in chicago for the past 40 years can tell you it is democ"RATS" who are the cancer that has, is and continues
to destroy the city, county and state!

Regarding arrests that are dropped, an independent investigation, possibly the US justice department could take a look at these arrests and find corruption such as collusion, bribery or conspiracy...hell maybe even a RICO violation involving POLITICIANS and GANGS!!!

Regarding lawlessness in the city, county and state...A good defense would be to NEVER ELECTZ ANOTHER democ"RAT"!!! Especially starting with Cook County States Attorney!!!

A big part of the city non suiting cases is that the department is seeking felony charges and the city charge must be dismissed before that can happen.

You ever thought those attorneys were in MISDEMEANOR court because they were at the top of the law school class?

Do you think a real prosecutor would work in the CITY for decades for peanuts and a pension if they actually worked?

Does the media have the stats of cases The city attorneys actually prosecute? (IM hearing lay offs next year if they aint doing nothing)

city lawyers can not dismiss a looting charge as that is a state charge. They’re dismissing the disorderly MCC charges. These are not going to make a difference anyway. It’s mostly a fine and or community service to satisfy.

Just for your review and reminder of how things work in Murder City under the Reform Murder mayor and the Marxist running it:

Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals - their/her bible:

As noted by Alinsky, rules to use to foment mob action and Community anger, distrust, violence and perceived suspicion regarding the Department and other law enforcement agencies.

Pick a target (the police or other law enforcement agencies eg., DHS, ICE).
Freeze them in place - key incidents eg, police confrontations/shootings.
Polarize the target (all cops are bigots and racists ).
Attack them (using the main stream media as attack dogs & other institutions - SJW like SAO/judiciary)

In Shitty City this works like a charm.
Sustain the effort and fully exploit it.

No mystery here. Given the right political hacks and Marxist in charge, Socialism marches on.

Tighten up the seat belts its gonna be a long and rough ride.

I was being sarcastic. The kid doesn't work for the corporation counsel. He hasn't even gone to college. At this point, even clown college would be a step in the right direction. Our 50-story Streeterville condo building is near-empty of residents, and it's not COVID that's caused the outflux. People are scared. Not everyone is a flaming SJW or nincompoop liberal here. We're mostly seniors, middle-aged folks, diverse crowd. Our most outspoken conservative resident willing to speak-out is a hispanic businessman. We're like prisoners in our tower, periodically in full lockdown mode due to riots or protests nearby, suffering through nights of revving motors of motorcycle gangs cruising streets well past midnight, sirens headed to Northwestern, random gunshots and fireworks, and drunk curbside car-parties. Michigan Avenue looks like it's ready for a hurricane, given all the plywood and barriers, and night-time strolls are strictly verboten, given "wilding" and mugging frequencies, given "just teens" roaming streets looking for trouble/targets, given absence of other nonthreatening pedestrians and street-life norms we had enjoyed pre-2020.

The exodus is real. Look at 60611 MLS real estate listings, 1200+ listings and less than 100 under-contract. The fire-sale hasn't begun, but we're just one more looting episode, one more riot event, several more news-stories about old ladies being mugged mid-day, for the prices to drop, and the panic to ensue. Recent Trib article about "Gold Coast residents worried" sugar-coated situation. You've a lot of old people in 60610 and 60611 who aren't equipped to manage a hostile neighborhood where physical danger is real and present, both night and day, should they exit their doorman-filtered secured-door camera-monitored residential buildings providing a gloss of home security. And we pay for that protection, in our real estate taxes, in our high utility costs, in our even higher monthly assessments.

Lightfoot's staff reads your blog, there's no doubt about it. Hope they read the comments from the non-CPD readers too, note the frustration and exasperation, see that Chicago is in serious jeopardy.
