This Sounds Odd
- Two men have died after their vehicle crashed and burst into flames on Lake Shore Drive near Oak Street early Sunday, police said.
Their car was traveling northbound on the 1000 block of North Lake Shore when it crashed on the S-curve. Police said in a statement the driver lost control and the car “hit a gas line which caused the car to catch fire.”
A witness reported seeing the car traveling at a high speed, rake along a concrete barrier, and burst into flames. A trail of burning fuel followed behind the car atop the barrier, he said.
Can someone tell us where there's a gas line (natural or liquid?) that crosses Lake Shore Drive on the surface any point?

Our best guess is that since it was Lake Shore Drive - and everyone knows there are guns all over the place there - the weapon was tossed from another vehicle and the deceased swerved to avoid the obstruction in the middle of the road, crashing into the retaining wall and bursting into flame.

Hmm, no.
The gas line is under the car and was worn through as the car dragged a portion of the unibody along the top of the concrete barrier. Modern cars have high-pressure fuel injection systems running at about 40PSI thru high-pressure hoses and metal lines as the fuel travels from the in-tank pump to the fuel manifold on the engine.
What kind of vehicle?
The first thing that came to my mind was a Jeep with a jerry can on the back.
Any word of it being stolen or a rental?
I’m guessing by gas line they meant the cars fuel line. Not surprising that the media wouldn’t be more astute in their writing so as not to cause confusion. They just don’t have it in them to tell a clear story.
While we were milling around our corner on Michigan Avenue (just an hour or so b4 that crash happened), I could not believe what a circus and dump downtown had become. Fools riding around on Divvy bikes, a certain portion of the population riding them on sidewalks, not obeying any road safety laws (worst thing ever for the city those fucking bikes), all the not street legal motor bikes, skateboards everywhere, nearly mowing over pedestrians, ATVs (yes the things meant to be ridden in dirt), again just acting like fools, weaving in & out of traffic, numerous motorcycles & muscle cars all revving their engines at surely noise deafening & obnoxious levels...mini sprints of drag racing etc. The finale of the night was the black Dodge Charger with an alleged gun in it that hit about 100 mph down Michigan Avenue...absolutely not a place decent people are going to want to be. Someone better wake up and start backing the police (giving us a certain amount of immunity in performing our jobs), before this city goes entirely down the shitter forever.
Or could it be that they were chasing another vehicle and Mr Krispy had his gun hand outside the car window ready to take a shot when they lost control and hit the barrier. I also suspect that whoever said gas line meant gasoline line in the vehicle. Maybe I’m wrong and if I am the city or some utility company will have a lot of explaining to do in court. Those barriers have more skid marks on them than my tighty whities and you would have to be some sort of moron to approve any type of gas line near them. But then again this is the city where anything can get approved with an envelope of cash or a few premium seats at your favorite venue.

In typical incompetent "journalist" fashion, they probably managed to confuse damage to the car's own gas line with something else. A vehicle scraping along the top of a concrete crash barrier is definitely a situation where anything running along the floor pan is vulnerable.

since the papers write at a 4 th grade level let me interpert. there are no gas lines exposed in that area. period. i believe old boy travelling at the posted limit of 120 ended up on top of the wall and tore open his gas tank and the sparks turned him into a crispy critter. simple.
As soon as I read this I suspected what every Chicago cop did. These are a couple of youths enjoying the freedom to commit all manner of crime, mahem and atrocities with complete immunity,under the Lightfoot-Crimesha, socialist regime. Likely a couple assholes who stole a luxury sports car at gunpoint to use for smoking weed, drive by shootings, more carjackings and even a smash and loot. They know they can criss-cross the city and suburbs with very little risk of an officer initiating a stop and search of the vehicle and even less of a pursuit, If the police did. If they have exceptionally bad luck and are arrested, they face very low risk of meaningful prosecution and none if they are our precious youth. I like to think they were in my neighbor's BMW Z5 that was just stolen, listening to the 70s Lake Shore Drive song, high and carefree, when they crashed and charred themselves. For those two there was some justice finally served. P.S. It hasn't been the S Curve since the early 1980s.

I wasnt there for this crash, but have been for others at that location. The car's fuel line was probably ripped off from the debris field from other wrecks or exposed rebar from the wall itself. It's also possible the gas tank was ruptured in the slide across the wall.
Think fuel line - on the vehicle - and not gas line. But yes, not much els about this adds up.
There is a gas line under the vehicle. It goes from the fuel tank to the cylinders.

Christmas came early for the law abiding citizens: 2 less ghetto lottery winner announcements and no excuse to riot, no police or emts harmed or slapoed with unfair jail sentence during this mess.

One of the "victims" from the car that went up in flames was out in the neighborhood the following day with like 100 other gang bangers just north of Howard attending a vigil where they had a 10-1. All one the pos that died in the crash. Just more kids funnin I guess.
