Macy’s is closing its flagship store in Water Tower Place, creating a huge vacancy on the Magnificent Mile during an already challenging time for retail landlords.
The 170,000-square-foot store in the North Michigan Avenue vertical mall will close after a clearance sale that starts this month and will run for 8 to 12 weeks, Macy’s said Tuesday.
“After careful consideration, Macy’s has decided to close our Water Tower Place location,” Macy’s said in a statement. “This closure is part of the company’s strategy to right-size its store fleet, announced in early 2020. The decision to close a store is always a difficult one, and Macy’s Water Tower Place has been honored to serve its customers on the Magnificent Mile for 45 years.”

As someone who has sold to every department store chain over a period from the mid 1970's to the mid 2010's, I can say that Macy's, and that location specifically, has been on life support for years. Even without looting, riots, or pandemic Macy's would have closed that location. They just announced this morning that 41 other Macy's will be closing soon too. Groot, Foxx, Preckwinkle, and (Deer in headlights) Hopkins and Reilly haven't helped and may have even sped up the process but brick and mortar retail locations all over the country have been failing and in a downward spiral for the past 20 years...name a THRIVING suburban retail mall...they are few and far between.

I’m enjoying shopping at my just opened Target, Ross, and 5 Below at Foster and Cicero. I can walk there and not see any plywood. I am aware of a carjacking there, but I am always armed and wear my body armor when shopping in the city. If These stores don’t have what I need, dWalmart is 10 minutes away on Touhy with some other not boarded up stores. Haven’t been downtown in years. Have no plans to go there ever again.

First of all, who rewrote history? Macy’s didn’t occupy Water Tower for 45 years. Marshall Field’s became Macy’s in 2006. It was Marshall Field’s before then. I used to go downtown in the 60s. I would go to Shoppers World and look at the cheap discounted shit. I would eat at Ronnie's Steak House. I would hang out in the pawn shops, magazine stands and see a porn movie. That was my day. Maybe in a few years I will be able to go downtown and do it all over again.

I posted about this Macy's during the summer. I can't stand LL, but this Macy's hadn't done well in years, sadly. It might have done okay--if that in 2013 and 2014; probably not after that. Although the store is quite large, it seemed understocked in items like home goods, everyday things that people who live in Near North might need. Something about both sides of Michigan that people might not realize is how little foot traffic some streets had, even long before the riots/looting this past summer. There is more retail infrastructure than I think this area can support.
Water Tower Place is going to be the new Forman Mills selling the finest in Gangbanger Chic!
Heard that Northwestern Medical Center is leasing Macy's floors 2-6 and converting them to office space, leaving floor 1 alone, (presumably for future retail).
