Chicago Teachers Union members who refused to return to classrooms Monday said they’re worried about losing their jobs, but they believe that reopening schools is a greater risk.
“We’re afraid for our lives. We don’t want to lose our jobs. The fear of losing our jobs is real. Many of us are the sole income earners in our homes,” Chicago Public Schools teacher Lori Torres said at a morning news conference. “But the fear of this virus is greater than that fear.”
About 5,800 teachers and other staff members who serve preschoolers and some special education students were expected to return to classrooms on Monday, with those students due to return on Jan. 11, which would mark the first in-person classes in CPS since the coronavirus prompted a statewide shutdown of schools in March.
CPS on Monday did not provide the number of teachers who showed up or who continued delivering lessons remotely, and has not directly responded to most questions about how the latter cases will be handled.
Of course they won't respond - because no one is holding the teachers or their reps responsible for anything. Groot won't butt heads with them because she's scared.

There should be 2 school systems in Chicago. 1-In school learning. 2-video/computer for those students who are disruptive and abusive in class. This way the disruptive won't bother those who want to be in class and those who want a chance. The teachers who don't want to go back wont have to. Both taught by CPS.

Back in April, the media was successful in scaring me about this illness (why do they keep calling it a “disease”??). But since then I know many, many people who have caught COVID-19 and....survived. Young, old and everything in between (except my neighbor’s 92 yo mother who’d been at death’s door since last February). One friend was briefly hospitalized, but he’s not in the greatest shape. The rest were sick for a couple days and recovered.
My point..the teachers cannot fool us anymore. It’s tiresome that they keep bleating they’re “scared” and “it’s not safe”!
Since April (and since being home from work) everyone COULD have quit smoking, lost 50# and made their bodies more resistant to this flu.

I live in Texas and have a friend who is a principal in one middle school, and a friend who is a teacher in another school in the same city and both schools have been opened since August, and guess what, both schools have reported ZERO coronavirus infections since starting classes back k in August. Sitting on the couch at home turning on a laptop at 0830, chit chat for 45 mins, head out for shopping, hair dids, etc, and logging off at 1530 shouldn’t be constituted as a full time compensated Work Day. Or splitting hairs, was the Contract purposely worded without using “classroom” attendance/instruction? The city has the tools to monitor computer activity of its employees but won’t challenge or even randomly audit this, considering they only react to social media posts...by members of other fraternal organizations.

The "teachers" and their union are full of shit. I have grandchildren in Wisconsin that are in school, and I have grandchildren in another IL county that are in school. My grands that are here, and in CPS are falling way behind their cousins. I even offered to pay for the chicago grands to transfer to catholic school, but (and I don't blame them) the kids don't want to leave their friends (or they are learning to be lazy slugs because of cps). ctu is detrimental to the kids and to my taxes!!!

When I hear these teachers talk about the danger of showing up to work, I always wonder where is the follow up question.... what about the Police , firefighters, hospital staff, teachers in Catholic schools and the people working at Jewel grocery stores for gods sake.
